This week I am joined by Justin Wegner of Backbone Swag. Just when Justin took the leap of faith in himself and went out on his own, life had other plans. Justin worked his way up to finally having some big contracts in the agency space just as COVID and 2020 punched everyone in the face. Every single project he was working on stopped or postponed. We are launching a men’s candle company. I have more ideas than time, some ideas are better than others I’ll admit. Ideas are actually pretty easy it’s deciding which ones to pursue, which ones are going to be dead ends that take a ton of intuition and skill.

I created this thing Rich Ideas Lab for a few reasons. 1) I love jamming about business ideas, making money, and how to have the lifestyle about as much as hunting. 2) It’s the best resource I can think of to help all of you who want to do the same.

From an early age I knew there was a version of life where I had freedom to go do what I wanted when I wanted. A version of life where if you want something expensive you figure out how to make that money.

I worked like hell to make that happen. Then I thought I could teach a course on how to do that. While I do think that will save you years of missteps, what you really need to do is surround yourself with people who are doing that.

In retrospect it’s obvious, I surrounded myself with people who pushed me. Who made me think bigger. The problem I had was that there was very few people like me. They all wanted to build businesses so they could drink umbrella drinks on a beach. I was trying to do it so I could work face off chasing elk in the mountains.

SO, what is the thing I can create that is going to push me to the next level as well as help people get what they want but do not yet know how to get? This is that thing. Here is a taste of what we are doing, but it’s going to be so much bigger.

Right after we recorded this I thought to myself; “We don’t do enough bear podcasts”. Bear hunting has been such a huge piece of hunting journey and honestly in retrospect I have more hunting memories with by buddies from hunting bears than probably any other hunts. It’s just fun!

This week I am joined by Joe Kondelis who would rather hunt bears than even elk and deer. A montana native that resides in Wyoming, Joe has hunted mountain black bears since before it was cool. Joe happens to also be the head of the Western Bear Foundation, a 501c3 for bears. We chat about bears and some of the many struggles that face the species across the west. We also talk about bear hunting and how most hunters think of bears as an after thought or a way to spend a little extra time in the spring.

We also dive into advice for new hunters and how to avoid getting frustrated with all of the pressure.

As Chairman, Mr.Ferguson is dealing with some of the big changes the Colorado Commission is working on for the 2022 season. With the death of an archery hunter this year during the muzzleloader overlap, the state is looking into options to reduce this risk. One of the options on the table is a new hunter orange requirement for archery season. The Bowhunters Association would love your feedback as hunters on this and is asking you to take a quick survey. This week I catch up with the man himself Ryan Lampers. Ryan is one of the best hunters I know and this year was nothing short of a banner year for Lampers. This week we catch up on the season and some of his highs and lows. Ryan drew a Nevada elk tag this year and in true Lampers fashion he put in a ton of time on that mountain. We chat about what he learned watching elk from pre rut through full rut. This is very interesting to hear outside of just being a very good hunting story. Most of us spend a a week or 10 days and we can always well here is what I think happened, but Lampers watched the whole picture from start to finish. In his attempt to see every bull in the unit before making a decision Lampers learned a ton about elk behavior.

We also talk about the weird phenomenon that multiple people have commented on of seeing more and more velvet bucks while rifle hunting. We talk about Montana mule deer, and Ryan gives some tips to hunting with the Hawkins for the late season.  All in all a really great conversation with such a good human.

This week Jaden and I catch up on his recent elk hunt and my run at Montana mule Deer. You could probably sum up both hunts with sunset photos. All jokes aside, we talk about the highs and lows of November and the struggles of late season hunting. We also talk about the upcoming heritage season that Montana started and we touch on some ideas for tips and tactics. Personally I was excited to go look for a late season bull elk but now that my tag is notched I only have a Mule deer tag for the late season.

New Muzzleloader Season Rules

• Hunters can use plain lead projectiles and a muzzleloading rifle that is charged with loose black powder, loose Pyrodex, or an equivalent loose black powder substitute and ignited by a flintlock, wheel lock, matchlock, or percussion mechanism using a percussion or musket cap.
• During the muzzleloader season, hunters may not use a muzzleloading rifle that requires insertion of a cap or primer into the open breach of the barrel (inline), is capable of being loaded from the breech, or is mounted with an optical magnification device.
• The muzzleloading rifle must be a minimum of .45 caliber and may not have more than two barrels.
• Use of preprepared paper or metallic cartridges, sabots, gas checks, or other similar power and range-enhancing manufactured loads that enclose the projectile from the rifling or bore of the firearm is also prohibited.
• A person may take a deer or elk with a license or permit that is still valid at the end of the general hunting season.

Man this podcast was good! Next year I am planning a trip to Kodiak. It has been a dream of mine for a long time, and you know what they say about dreams. This week Tyson Olson is back on the show. Tyson is one of the people I surround myself to push me to be better. Tyson has been on the show a few times and is just one of those people who achieves at an extremely high level. In the last episode Tyson and I touched on his processes for dream boarding, a system that he uses to dangle they proverbial carrot in front of himself. Tyson does this at such a high level and then has been able to complete that quest 3 times. This is so powerful! I think this is so important and today we dive into the dream board both for life but also for hunting. For me the dream hunts have been as much or more of a driver to push me toward success than any material things. Lucas and Alishia are probably the most hardcore hunting couple I have ever met. They both get after it and there is rarely a day off work that they aren’t both in the mountains. When they go pregnant last year my wife and I joked that the baby better hit the ground running or it was going to get left behind.

What’s up podcast listeners, this week Ben and I have our semi annual whiskey and catch up session to chat about how season has been going to include lessons learned. Ben and I actually linked up in the woods for 2-3 days and I actually go to watch ben put a stalk on a great bull that unfortunately did end with a dead elk.

For me season has been good, other than I hate hunting when it’s as hot as it has been all year. I intentionally set my Montana dates back this year to try and hit what seems to be a later rut with high temps. I still have had my best luck in Montana in the month of October. I took a few days off to catch up on work and hang out with the family but headed back out to the woods today to try to get lucky with this storm coming in.

E-Scouting Course 

I tasted my first flip flop deer leg at Total archery Challenge a few years back. It was like my brain didn’t know how to register how good it was with knowing what I was eating. I have had a lot of deer. I have also tasted some of the best BBQ in the world. While this is not BBQ I would put it up there with Franklin’s of Wild Game, it is that good!

This was probably one of the top 3 hunts I’ve done. I absolutely love the challenge of going to a new place and trying to figure it out. The Haul Rd is the ultimate DIY figure it out hunt. I had been planning to do a fly out caribou hunt, I was headed out solo and honestly I just wanted to go to Alaska and hunt. When my good buddy Craig Van Arsdale said hey I am headed to the Haul rd I thought you know that hunt has been on my list for a lot of years. I have spent most of my life hunting solo for one reason or another. three years ago Craig and I went on a hunt in Colorado and we hit it off. Not only can Craig and I shoot the shit about crypto and business but we pretty much know what the other one is going to do before he says a word. The only problem with Craig and I hunting together is that there is literally zero voice of reason saying maybe thats a bad idea. This has lead to some of the craziest pack outs I can think of. The craziest thing is that Craig and I have been 100% success on every hunt together and we have killed within 400 yards of each other every single time.

We went into the Haul rd hunt with lots of time, a willingness to figure it out, and zero safety net, aka a rifle. Craig txt me and said hey should I bring a rifle just in case? I instantly said no, I want to kill one with my bow and I don’t want to have an out. is bow or bust this trip.

For those who don’t know the “Haul Rd Caribou Hunt” is a road 500 miles long from Fairbanks to Deadhorse where within 5 miles of the road it is bow only. If you have the gumption you could hike out 5 miles and shoot one with a rifle but not many people hike 5 miles across the tundra. In this podcast we breakdown our epic hunt that had it’s challenges and ended up with yet another brutal pack out.

Hunting in bear country this year? Justin Rasmussen has spent his fair share of time around bears and teaches a good amount of bear safety. Mike aka @michaeltmerrill is one of the most upbeat happy dudes I follow on any social media. I don’t know if the guy has ever had a bad day or not but he probably wouldn’t show it if he did.

Mike is a runner, he wasn’t born a runner in fact he told me there was a time when he very openly said he wasn’t running unless he was chasing a guy with a ball, or someone was chasing him with a ball. Mike found running as a way to improve his hunting ability. A funny thing happened though, it make much more than that. This week I am joined by Tyler Boschma a badass mountain hunter who is definitely not afraid to push the limits and seek out adventure. Tyler actually go into mountain hunting later in life and of all things one of the early hunts that created the monster was striking out on a sheep hunt. While stationed in AK with the Air Force Tyler figured he should probably do some sheep hunting. He did find success and like a lot of us the absolute grind of a hunt is what brought him back for more.

This week I catch up with my good buddy Ty Leary. Ty is a great entrepreneur and a hell of a hunter. Ty is one of the people I look to help myself become a better entrepreneur and all around human. In this podcast we dive into work life balance, the ever evolving question for us as we are both very driven while also trying to be aware and present within life. Ty recently booked his dream hunt of an Alaskan Brown bear and we talk about his upcoming plans. My biggest takeaways from this conversation could seem at at odds with each other. On one hand you have to set your dreams in motion and work like a mad man to get them, but also don’t be in a hurry. Remember there is something to be learned and taken from in everything you do.

One of the most successful and hardest working hunters I know is Justin Shaffer. Retired army ranger and now full time director at Kuiu Justin has worked extremely hard to get where he is and really to have the success in the field that he has.

In this podcast we talk about what sets him apart from everyone else, (though he’s too humble to admit that he is in a league of his own). Years of discipline and honing his craft have allowed him to set very big personal goals and then crush those goals year after year. I love that Justin came from nothing and did this all on military salary. Justin is such a great example of how you can craft your life to be what you want it to be.
