If you are a teacher who is not taking action due to fear and living in chaos, let me tell you - you are not alone. In this episode, I share a personal story about how my daughters had to switch schools just two weeks before the start of the school year and how this unexpected change brought up a lot of fear and anxiety—both for them and for me. We dive into how fear of the unknown can paralyze us as educcators leading to procrastination, overactivity, and eventually burnout. We explore the different fears teachers face daily—from fear of failure to fear of losing their jobs—and how these fears create chaos in our lives. I also give my super simple 2-step plan to help you move from chaos to calm. It's literally so simple that I wish it were more difficult.. Being a burned out teacher is hard but being a burned out teacher with a disability presents unique challenges to face every day. We all know that teachers give so much of themselves to their teaching so it’s especially important for teachers with disabilities to set and hold boundaries in order to take care of themselves. In this episode, we get to chat with Hayley Spira-Bauer about her experiences teaching with disabilities and how she navigated the two in tandem. She is sharing how she experienced burnout while teaching and the need for self-advocacy among teachers who often feel pressured to meet their students' needs while neglecting their own. We’re also looking at how teacher vacancies impact overall teacher well-being and how she is still making an impact on students and teachers through her current role. Hayley Spira-Bauer is the Chief Operating Officer of Fullmind as well as a New York State certified teacher. She spent the tenure of her teaching career in brick and mortar schools in New York City, working in a public school in the South Bronx and and then a charter school in Harlem for a decade. She has been with Fullmind for seven years doing equity-based work around the United States, supplying state-certified teachers to schools to solve various pain points and is currently the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Academic Officer. Hayley is very, very deeply committed to leaving this world a better way than when she came into it. | 6. The Game Changing Method of Healing Burnout with Inner Work with Ce'arra Richards | 19 Jul 2022 | 00:31:21
EPISODE 6 Are you still struggling to get a hang of this burnout recovery thing? Some people can implement some strategies and feel a little better, but often times one very important thing is missing. Inner work. Before you can bring your best self into your classroom, you need to ensure that you are regularly monitoring yourself for signs of destructive behavior that end up cycling in burnout. This is the last episode in the Summer Self-Care for Burnout Recovery Series and the perfect end to this specific series because without this, none of the rest will really matter. When it comes to recovering from burnout, there are lots of different methods for inner work and there are many reasons why it is important. We are covering all of that and more in today's episode and I brought on Ce'arra Richards to join in on the conversation. Ce’arra Richards is a First Grade Teacher who believes that teachers can Trojan Horse the archaic and failing education system from the inside out by taking rebellious and radical personal responsibility; using inner work to heal. Ce’arra believes that inner child work heals the teacher; therefore impacting the humanization of self and students. Ce’arra has spent eight years teaching first grade at a rural, Title 1, public school; as well as seven years combined as a paraprofessional educator, school secretary, and district grants manager/writer. Although Ce’arra experienced considerable adversity throughout her childhood, through extreme dedication and discipline, Ce’arra put herself through college to reach her dream of becoming a teacher. Ce’arra has also worked extensively to heal her trauma, including her inner child and is currently sharing with teachers how this healing directly affects teaching, reignites passion, prevents burnout, and will reform the failing education system from the inside out. | 99. Defiantly Hopeful: Navigating Teacher Burnout with Community, Humor, and Advocacy with Special Guest Andrea Forcum | 26 Mar 2024 | 00:37:10
Stress as a teacher is something you just can't get away from. It's bound to happen but in order to avoid burnout and sustain your career, we have to take steps to mitigate it in realtime. My friend, who you might know as Educator Andrea on Tiktok & Instagram, actually gained some social media notoriety for her hilarious classroom stories, but what you might not know is that she has her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. Her research and dissertation was all about factors that impact teacher attrition most. What might surprise you is that it was not the class size, it was not the grade level, but it was overwhelmingly one specific area, which we will talk all about in this episode. In this episode, we talk all about her journey from teacher to professor, her research and dissertation about what could help teachers sustain their careers as educators, and we also chat our experiences in the classroom to let you know you're not alone. | 97. From Student Apathy to Active Learning: Innovative Strategies for Reigniting Teacher Passion & Engaging Students with Special Guest Dr. Diondraya Taylor | 12 Mar 2024 | 00:26:18
One of the reasons that students are apathetic and disengaged is because they don’t see the point or value in learning. We’ve talked in this short mini-series about apathetic students and disengagement and some real strategies and mindset shifts we can make as educators to reduce the burnout from these types of behaviors. We need a way to reignite our passion but also to intrinsically motivate students to see the value in life-long learning. Last week we talked about adding productive struggle to our classrooms to support students in building the life skills necessary, but this week, I want us to get into the nitty gritty of taking this a step farther and implementing project-based learning strategies that can transform the way students see the value in their education. Where we shift from the traditional 'sit and get' method to a more hands-on, minds-on approach where students aren't just passive recipients but active participants. That’s why in today’s episode, we chat with Dr. Diondraya Taylor, who is the founder adn CEO of Mindset & Milestones - a social enterprise that helps schools and youth organizations create real-world learning programs using project-based learning. They provide a weekly project newsletter for teachers and program development services for admin who want to take their schools to the next level. Dr. Taylor fell in love with entrepreneurial thinking through her roles with different startups, and this is where she recognized that applying problem-solving to the real world is an amazing tool for educators to encourage innovation and ambition in their students. Dr. Taylor is also a triple Bruin having graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in psychobiology and entrepreneurship, a Master’s in Education, and a Ph.D. in Education and Organizational Change. Between her business and her research, she is committed to the preparation of youth for the future of work and transforming classrooms into spaces for real-world learning. | 96. Unlocking the Power of Productive Struggle: How to Transform Student Apathy into Active Learning with Special Guest Mona Iehl | 05 Mar 2024 | 00:37:43
If you've ever faced the challenge of staring at blank faces of your uninterested and disengaged students, you know how hard it is to spark their curiosity. Actually getting them to take action is a struggle in and of itself, but what if I told you there's a transformative approach that could flip the switch from apathy to engagement? That’s exactly what we're diving into in today’s episode, where we explore the game-changing strategy of teaching productive struggle. This isn’t just about getting students to just pay attention; it’s about empowering them to embrace the challenges of learning head-on. But how, you ask? How do we transform struggle into a force for engagement? How do we make our classrooms a place where mistakes are not just tolerated but celebrated as stepping stones to learning? That's exactly what my special guest, Mona Iehl from Mona Math, and I discuss today - what exactly productive struggle is, how it helps to bridge the gap between apathy & action, and practical steps that we can take to weave productive struggle into the fabric of our teaching, regardless of what subject we teach. Mona is a former math avoider, teacher & instructional coach in Chicago. Her passion for math came when she discovered how to engage every student in a subject she, too, disliked. Through intentionally changing her math class to help students BE mathematicians using a student centered approach math came alive for Mona and her students. Now Mona collaboratively coaches teachers in building a math culture through rigorous student centered math instruction. You can listen to Mona every Monday on her podcast, Honest Math Chat. | 94. How Losing Yourself in Teaching Fuels Burnout: 3 Ways to Detach Your Worth From Work and Find Balance | 20 Feb 2024 | 00:27:40
Have you ever felt like your job as a teacher isn't just a part of your life, but somehow, it's started to be your life? You're not alone. Many of us teachers have find ourselves caught in a cycle where the lines between professional and personal blur—a phenomenon psychologists call "enmeshment." It's like our work has slowly woven itself into every fiber of our being, dictating not just how we spend our hours but also shaping our identity and worth. While being passionate and dedicated is admirable, this enmeshment can steer us toward a dangerous cliff of exhaustion and burnout. It's a reality many of us face, yet struggle to navigate. The question then becomes, how do we untangle ourselves from this intricate web and reclaim our autonomy, ensuring our jobs enrich, not consume, our lives? In this episode, we talk about how identity loss is a byproduct of burnout, how preserving our personal life is protective, and the three things we can do today to detach our worth and find balance. The pressure to power through illness, the guilt of taking time off, and the overwhelming task of preparing detailed sub plans can leave educators feeling trapped in a toxic cycle of self-sacrifice. We explore the reasons why teachers often get sick at the most inconvenient times, such as before, during, and after breaks, and offer practical tips to manage this without adding extra stress. From understanding the impact of chronic stress on our immune systems to automating sub plans and empowering students to take responsibility for their learning, we delve into essential strategies for reducing the overwhelm around sick days. Join us as we challenge the narrative, provide actionable steps, and empower educators to prioritize their well-being in a system that often demands self-sacrifice. | 85. Breaking the Burnout Pattern: Cognitive Distortions in Teaching - All or Nothing Thinking and Over Generalization with Special Guest Kelsey Sorenson | 05 Dec 2023 | 00:24:45
Have you ever caught yourself thinking, 'If I can't do it perfectly, why bother doing it at all?' Maybe you've felt this way about your personal development as an educator, believing that you must always feel passionate and energized, and if you ever experience moments of doubt or fatigue, you’re somehow failing in your role. Or perhaps it’s in how you utilize resources in your classroom, thinking that you need to use every recommended teaching resource to its fullest, otherwise, you’re not making the most of the tools available to you. This black-and-white thinking can be a major roadblock in our teaching journey, making us feel like we're either superhero educators or just not cutting it. That mindset can be incredibly limiting, setting us up for unrealistic expectations and unnecessary stress. But here's the twist: What if there's a whole spectrum of success in between? In this episode, my friend Kelsey Sorenson from Wife Teacher Mommy is talking about two major cognitive distortions that could be limiting your mindset in the classroom - all or nothing thinking and overgeneralization. And if you like this episode, you will love the Winter Educate & Rejuvenate conference she is putting on in just a few weeks! You won’t want to miss out being a part of this as I am a keynote speaker chatting about how AI can save you time and energy to be the beat the burnout cycle once and for all. Did you know that 49% of adults self-identify as people-pleasers? If you're anything like most teachers, you may not even realize you are a people pleaser. I know I sure wouldn't have categorized myself as such. People-pleasing tendencies can often go unnoticed, especially when we're passionate about our work, like teaching. We might think that our dedication and willingness to go the extra mile for our students and colleagues are just part of being a dedicated educator. In this episode, Amy Schamberg dives deeper into her own burnout experience and shares valuable insights on how to identify if you are a people-pleaser and the importance of setting boundaries. She also discusses the power of self-awareness and self-compassion in overcoming burnout and finding fulfillment in your teaching journey. Amy Schamberg is a mental health and holistic wellness expert with over 13 years of dedicated experience. She is the driving force behind Amy Schamberg Wellness and holds various prominent roles including Licensed School Psychologist at the Ricks Center for Gifted Children at the University of Denver, Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, trainer, speaker, and creator of "The ME TIME Method." Are you a teacher who finds themselves burning the midnight oil, grading papers, and crafting lesson plans long after the school day officially ends? If so, rest assured, you're not alone. In the world of education, it's all too common to unintentionally become the teacher who takes work home, spending precious hours each night immersed in grading or planning. It wasn't in your initial career plans, was it? Recent statistics reveal a stark reality. It often leads to teachers becoming workaholics. That's why in this episode, we're here to explore why teachers often become workaholics, how to identify if you're one of them, and most importantly, the actionable steps you can take today to reclaim your work-life balance and reignite your passion for teaching, even amidst rising demands and responsibilities. | 73. Reignite Your Passion for Teaching with Autonomy & Kick Outdated PD to the Curb with PoppD | 26 Sep 2023 | 00:30:21
Did you know that a study by the National Center for Education Statistics found that teachers who reported having more autonomy in their classrooms tend to experience lower levels of burnout? Isn't it cool how having the freedom to choose your teaching methods and make decisions in your classroom can actually be a super effective way to fight off burnout? 📚✨ It's like your secret weapon for staying energized and excited on your teaching adventure! But we don't always have that freedom, do we? Many teachers, including myself, have been signed up for professional development that has nothing to do with what I want to learn or what area I want to grow in. The good news is, there are ways to navigate this too. We can seek out additional resources and opportunities for professional development that better fit our needs. | 71. Ignite Your Teaching Passion: How to Harness Your Least Favorite Subject to Rekindle Your Flame After Burnout with Special Guest Mona Iehl | 12 Sep 2023 | 00:37:34
Do you have that one subject that you just cannot stand? Does the mere thought of teaching it make you feel like you're trudging through mud? I get it; every educator has that one subject that seems to defy their teaching magic. But what if I told you that this very subject could be the secret ingredient to reignite your passion for teaching? That's exactly what we are talking about on today's episode with my good friend, Mona Iehl. She is your go to for everything math, but what you might not know about Mona is that she is a former math avoider. She is also a teacher and instructional coach in Chicago. Her passion for math came when she discovered how to engage every student in a subject she, too, disliked. But how? Through intentionally changing her math class to help students BE mathematicians. Exploration, real world problems, productive struggle, and math discussions made math come alive for Mona and her students. Now Mona shows teachers how to build math culture through rigorous student centered math instruction. While we'll dive deep into math because that's her specialty, I want you to know that everything we discuss in today's episode is entirely adaptable to any subject that doesn't exactly light your teaching fire. So, get ready to be inspired and empowered to reignite your passion for teaching, no matter the subject! | 69. How To Set Personal & Professional Learning Goals That Transform Teacher Burnout with Special Guest Melissa Steigerwald | 29 Aug 2023 | 00:41:21
Often we think of teacher learning goals as these things that include educational jargon like "rigor" or "learning gap." But if we aren't creating our own professional learning goals, then it's almost pointless. In this episode, we dive into how Melissa, a teacher just like you (not an influencer or social media teacher) used this podcast to set a professional learning goal to beat the teacher burnout cycle once and for all. As you listen to her story, I'm sure you'll feel a little sense of "Oh, I've been there too" and grab a few ideas to add to your plan to beat burnout this school year. It's a constant process and the process of setting these goals is what leads to reviving that passion for teaching again. Melissa is a veteran teacher with 20 years experience in the classroom. Out of college, she was hired to teach 4 year old kindergarten in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has been blessed to be able to stay in the same school, grade level and classroom for her entire career. She considers herself to be an ordinary classroom teacher as she does not have any teacher social media presence. Melissa tries to make a difference every day by bringing joy, playfulness and connection to our youngest learners.
