Death and Bereavement : Person centred support for relatives and friends30 May 202200:03:33

 Losing someone you love can be extremely traumatic. It can also be a huge relief depending on the circumstances. It is not the same for everyone, and we cannot predict how relatives or significant people to the person who has died may feel.

This isn’t about being a fully qualified bereavement practitioner. This isn’t about having all the answers. This is all about what you know - a person-centred response to human emotions.

A few tipis by our care expert, Abi Spence:

  • Treat the person with dignity and respect, create space and privacy for them. Let the person know where you are taking them, and what happens next
  • Never presume you know the person or how they feel. They may never have visited, you may have been told things by the person who has died, but this does not mean you know the relationship or how they feel
  • Observe what is happening - Observing sensitively enables you to gain a little insight into how that person may be experiencing their first emotions relating to death

 Any care home provider or care sector organisation that uses contractors has health and safety responsibilities. When selecting contractors, it is important to investigate them and make enquiries to ensure that you are not putting your residents, employees, and members of the public at risk.

In this episode, Neil Hughes-Hutchings, Senior Health and Safety Consultant at Napthens Health & Safety provides an overview of the importance of having a procurement procedure in place when bringing a contractor on board. In particular, the podcast covers:

  •  Risk assessment. Any organisation or individual should carry out a risk assessment for the activity they are undertaking. The significant findings of a risk assessment will usually be written unless there are fewer than five employees.
  •  A method statement details how a contractor intends to undertake a work activity and should summarise their approach to the job in hand
  • Insurance. Insurance is not a legal requirement, but it provides cover for the contractor if a member of the public or client of theirs claims because they have suffered injury or property damage as a result of the contractor’s activities.

Dementia is a condition that has touched so many of our lives. It affects 850,000 people in the UK. Astonishingly, according to the Alzheimer’s Society, 1 in 6 people over 80 have dementia, and 70 percent of people in care homes live with dementia, or have severe memory problems.

CQC - Key Lines of Enquiry and 2021 strategy28 Aug 202000:10:38

In this month's podcast, I’ll be talking with my colleague, Alison Lowerson about the Care Quality Commission’s Key Lines of Enquiry and its 2021 strategy.

As everyone listening today will no doubt be aware, the CQC was established in 2009 to regulate and inspect health and social care services in England. It refreshed the way it inspected practices in 2014.

We know, for example, that the CQC has focused largely on the WELL LED KLOE over the last couple of years. Why? Well, because it recognised that when a provider is ‘well led’, generally speaking  - everything else follows.

However, the COVID-crisis has inspired yet another sea-change in thinking in the CQC’s approach. While it remains a regulator and an inspector, it also wants to engage more closely with practices and to provide a supporting role.

In this podcast we'll discuss;

  • What does phase 3 include?
  • Why are they setting up COVID-19 Provider Collaboration Reviews (PCRS) and what are the objectives of this work?
  • What happens in phase 4?
  • What do we think may change for practices?
  • What would you recommend practices do now to be compliant and evidence the fact that they are safe?
  • What are inspectors expecting to see as evidence?
The 2020 Seasonal Flu Programme11 Aug 202000:17:24

As we're all aware, this year, health workers are facing the nightmare scenario of dealing with both flu and Coronavirus at the same time.

The government’s response has been to launch “the most comprehensive flu programme in UK history”.

It announced that it would offer flu vaccinations to 30 million people this winter.

The expanded programme will be available to:

  • people aged between 50 and 64;
  • households of those who are shielding, and;
  • children in their first year of secondary school.

What’s less clear is how such a large programme will actually be delivered on the ground.

There are many unanswered questions, which could create a number of unforeseen compliance challenges.

In this episode, Tracy Green, Head of Primary Care at QCS will be discussing some of these compliance challenges with QCS's GP Policy Lead Alison Lowerson.

How to Obtain, Evidence and Record Consent to Service User Personal Care/Support04 Mar 202400:05:26

Consent is a key part to bespoke, person–centred care delivery, without it, you simply aren’t providing a person-centred service. That said, consent is not always a straightforward process, there are other factors such as Mental Capacity to consider.

Evidencing consent

  • For our service users

  • What can providers do to monitor the evidence of consent?
