Anushka Purohit on Reducing Food Waste by Turning Bread into Beer13 Mar 202300:35:29

One third of the food we produce globally is wasted.  We are facing food shortages worldwide, but we actually produce enough calories to feed everyone on the planet.  If that's not reason enough to solve the food waste problem, think about this - 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food waste.  For context, the airline industry produced 2.5%

In this episode, I'm talking to Anushka Purohit, co-founder of Breer who is solving part of the food waste problem in Hong Kong by turning unused bread into beer.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Where the idea for Breer began;
  • Why Hong Kong bakeries were reluctant to give her bread they were going to throw away;
  • How Breer has raised 4 million Hong Kong dollars through grants and competitions;
  • The remote healthcare diagnostics tool she is working on;
  • How she knows when to give up and when to give a project "one last squeeze".

2022 Wrap Up - 5 Things I've Learned about Purpose-Driven Business15 Dec 202200:21:25

I started this podcast wanting to learn from women whose work was purposeful.  I believed that Purpose was something you found and when this happened, everything would fall into place.

 What I found was that Purpose is really more of a direction than a destination.  And this is actually part of the reason that it’s so powerful in our work lives.  It forces us to innovate and collaborate.  It forces us to think long term.  It encourages diverse thinking. And for all of these reasons, Purpose isn’t just good for solving problems.  It’s good for business.

 As I wind back over 2022, here are 5 lessons I’ve learned about purpose-driven business this year:

1. Purpose breeds innovation

2. Purpose drives diversity

3. Purpose forces you to think long term

4. Purpose fosters collaboration

5. Purpose is more about the direction than the destination

The Purpose Effect will be back in February 2023!  Until then, if you want to know more about purpose-driven business, sign up to my mailing list here

Christine Langdon on More Sustainable Gifting at The Good Registry28 Nov 202200:43:03

This year, it’s estimated that 8.3 billion dollars will be spent on unwanted gifts.  Households that celebrate Christmas produce 30% more waste at this time of year.  Millions and millions of portions of food are wasted including enough gravy to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool.

How can we gift better?  How can we gift more sustainably? More mindfully?  To find out, I spoke with Christine Langdon, co-founder and Chief of Good at The Good Registry

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How to better direct the money we are spending;
  • How 'sustainable gifts' stop being sustainable if you are getting more than one of them;
  • The amount of waste created at Christmas;
  • How online returns often end up in landfill;
  • Mindful gift ideas;
  • Educating our children (and re-educating ourselves) about what a good gift is.  It doesn't have to be 'new', it doesn't have to be a 'thing', it should be local and it should be as ethical and sustainable as possible;
  • Changing gifting habits.

I'll be publishing a good gift guide soon!  Look out for it on Instagram or on the website.

Tanya Rolfe on Bridging the Money Gap for Female Founders and Investors17 Oct 202200:44:43

For the last five years Tanya Rolfe has been on a mission to get more money into the hands of women.  This started with the Ladies Investment Club in Singapore and Her Capital; a seed venture fund investing in female founders in Southeast Asia.  Her current projects are Harriet; which supports female founders seeking to access capital and Sophia; a for-women by-women financial education platform.

In this episode we talk about:

  1. The opportunity that gender lens investing presents.
  2. Why we need more diverse fund managers, because despite data showing female founded businesses perform really well, VCs are risk averse and analyse businesses based on what has 'worked' in the past or products that they would use themselves.
  3. Data shows women gravitate more to impact investments and ESG investments.  This means that everybody benefits when women control more money.
  4. Women control a third of the world's wealth.  It's not enough (considering we represent 51% of the global population) but it's still $93 trillion.
  5. How to talk to children about money.  Did you know most of our money mindset is developed by the age of 7? (*welp*)

In a world crowded with "messaging" how do we tell engaging stories?  How do we convince our audience to come with us on a journey?

1. Multitasking and why the human brain is not designed to do this well;
2. Digital distractions and how they are designed to 'steal' our attention;
3. Learning to stay in the present;
4. Mindfulness for improved observation;
5. The importance of allowing our minds to wander.

Brittany Welsh on Manifesting the Life you Want28 Mar 202200:46:12

While the idea of creating your reality through the power of thought is nothing new, "manifesting" has gained a lot of momentum recently.  Google searches for ‘manifesting’ went up more than 600%.  On TikTok, views of manifestation content are surging past 9 billion.

So what’s going on?  When the world feels deeply unstable, it’s natural to look for ways to take back control over our realities.  While we can’t control a global pandemic, maybe we can control whether or not we become victims of our circumstances.

In this episode, I talk to manifestation coach Brittany Welsh about:

1. The fact that we unconsciously manifest all the time.  'Manifesting' is simply doing this consciously to create cognitive bias in favour of the life we want to lead;
2.  Our 'universal purpose' which is to grow and expand;
3. Manifesting money;
4. The power of affirmations.

1. How to make purpose agendas meaningful for your business;
2.  The impact of Covid on sustainability initiatives;
3. How hybrid / remote work impacts sustainability;
4. Responsible carbon offsetting and what to look for in tree-planting programmes;
5. Why business needs to work hand in hand with government and non profits to achieve the UNSDGs;

How to Be Better Than You with Shay Stone21 Feb 202200:51:07

When Shay Stone isn't animating projects like Encanto or Zootopia, she is helping people design the lives they want through the lessons in her new book Be Better Than You.

Shay has a unique and insightful perspective on how we can get the most out of our lives and ourselves.   For Shay, life is not a pursuit of happiness, or even necessarily finding your purpose.  It’s about finding yourself.  It’s about ‘becoming and overcoming’.  It’s about living from the inside out.

Shay and I talked about everything from the importance of being observant, what being proactive really means and what to do when fear paralyses you.

Abbey Pantano on Increasing Impact Through Partnerships17 Jul 202300:43:19

Abbey Pantano is a community architect and the founder of Impact Collab, a digital community for impact businesses based in Sydney / Gadigal Country.

Abbey started her journey into impact business because she wanted to be part of the solution for plastic waste. This led her to start The Raw Straw, a business that sold wheat stem drinking straws. The Raw Straw has been wound up, but Abbey talks candidly about the failures and learnings that led her to discover that social impact entrepreneurs were her people. And that she could help them by creating a community that would allow them to make more impact. So, Impact Collab was born.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The importance of community in business building;
  • Getting comfortable with failure and how to build up tolerance to failure;
  • How partnerships can help you grow faster, more cheaply. Partnerships are 25% less expensive than digital marketing;
  • The business case for partnerships;
  • Successful partnership case studies.

How to Stop in Order to Grow (Your Business) with Georgina J.S07 Feb 202200:34:16

When it comes to starting businesses, the popular narrative is that you need to move fast, scale quickly.  Hustle culture teaches us that slowing is counterintuitive at best and possibly a recipe for failure.

But what in order to grow, you actually needed to stop?  In this episode I talk to Georgina J.S.  A journalist turned publishing entrepreneur who now helps other women business owners navigate the hurdles which caused her frustration in her own business journey.

We talk about building a business that makes sense for you,  that is aligned to your purpose and your values.  But most importantly, we talk about how, not just slowing down, but actually stopping is the key to moving forward.

Special Episode - What 2021 Has Taught Us13 Dec 202100:39:28

To wrap up 2021, I wanted to reflect on some of the things we have learned this year.  So I asked some of the women who you’ve heard from on The Purpose Effect to share their lessons and what they are bringing forward into 2022.

These ‘pandemic years’ have been full of disruption, change and have been deeply unsettling.  But it has also made us more resilient.  We have learned to slow down.  To lean into uncertainty and to trust ourselves.

In this special episode we hear from past guests Nikola Hassan, Jasmine King, Adele Barlow and Tracy Minnoch-Nuku.  In a 'full circle' moment, I sit down with Kylie Denis in her new yoga space and learn about how the last two years have allowed her to build a more resilient business and a more exciting product.

We also have a sneak peak of what's in store for 2022 with Astrologer and tarot card reader,  Sarah May Low.

Modern Women and the Balancing Act - with Adele Barlow29 Nov 202100:44:26

Adele Barlow is the founder of Copy & Co, a boutique copywriting agency and the author of a number of books on finding purposeful work.  Her latest book, ‘Modern Woman’ is a collection of essays on the balancing act modern millennial women perform every day.

As Adele writes:  “the ideal worker is available 24/7, but so is the ideal mother.  Millennial women have been told to dream big, but in reality, there not only remains a glass ceiling, but also a glass wall and a glass cliff”.

We talk about why millennial women feel like they are never "getting it right", whether it is possible to “have it all” and if so, at what cost?

Why Are We So Anxious? With Agi Heale22 Nov 202100:44:48

Agi is the author of ‘Generation Panic’, an extremely helpful and relatable guide to managing anxiety for those within 'Generation Panic' (or GP'ers as she calls them) - who Agi describes as "strong, brilliant, ambitious people, but they often have a big dollop of insecurity that makes them wobble at certain moments of their lives."

Agi left a career in financial services recruitment after she started having panic attacks.  At first she thought she just had too much on her plate – work was fast paced and she was planning her wedding.  But upon returning to work after her honeymoon, those feelings hadn’t changed.  So she set off to figure out what would truly make her happy and found her purpose in coaching and by writing ‘Generation Panic’.  Agi is now a certified professional coach (CPCC & PCC qualified and a Certified NLP Practitioner) and the founder of Westbourne Associates.

The Professional Network for Creatives - with Cult Creative15 Nov 202100:43:29

Shermaine Wong, Manisha Jagan and Lina Esa are the founders of Cult Creative, a digital platform and networking app for the Malaysian creative community.

Like many great inventions, Cult Creative was born out of necessity.  The Covid pandemic not only dried up a lot of creative work, it also made it almost impossible for creatives to network, upskill, or find opportunities for when businesses opened up again.   So Shermaine, Manisha and Lina set to work building a community and app that would allow creatives to showcase their portfolios, find work and upskill.

We talk about how Cult Creative began, it's regional ambitions and why the future of work is for multi-hyphenates.

Belinda Ng on Gen Z and Sustainability10 Jul 202300:38:40

It's no surprise that Gen Z is the generation most engaged with climate issues. However, you might be surprised by the extent to which the climate is shaping the way Gen Z works. 59% of Gen Zs between the ages of 18 and 22 will stay longer with employers who are socially and environmentally responsible. And in Australia, young workers are leaving businesses which are not doing enough to respond to climate change.

In this episode, I'm speaking to recent university graduate, founder of the SustainaPod podcast and sustainable food advocate Belinda Ng about the ways in which climate change has shaped her career goals. In this episode, we talk about:

  • Eco Anxiety and what made her want sustainability to be part of her career trajectory;
  • Her sustainable food advocacy;
  • The goals behind the SustainaPod podcast;
  • What Gen Z expect from brands;
  • Dealing with burnout and long Covid;
  • How partnerships are key to shaping conversations.

Deborah Henry on Education and Access for Refugees25 Oct 202100:52:54

Deborah Henry is a T.V host, model and founder of Fugee Org – a not for profit organization that provides education and vocational opportunities for refugee children and youth in Malaysia.

In 2009,  Deborah co-founded the Fugee School to provide maths and English tuition to 4 refugee children.  Fugee Org now encompasses not only the school, but also Fugeelah – a social enterprise jewellery brand that funds the school; the Youth Academy, that provides training and other vocational opportunities and the recently launched Hi Ed Scholarship to enable refugee youth access to tertiary education.
