Season 4 Episode 137 Ross Dyke The Plant Pod ( Audio )12 Aug 202601:23:33

Sponsored by ECHO Tools www.echotools.ie

Ross Dyke is an emerging leader in sustainable horticulture and agri-technology, dedicated to combining hands-on expertise, forward-thinking research, and community outreach to shape the future of the industry. Based in Worcestershire, Ross is currently studying for a BSc (Hons) in Sustainable Horticulture & Agriculture Technology at Pershore College, part of WCG, with his final year due to conclude in 2026. His educational journey reflects both deep commitment and rapid progression, underpinned by strong apprenticeship and scholarship achievements.

Ross began his career in horticulture in 2015 at Webbs Garden Centres in Worcestershire and went on to do a Level 3 Crop Technician apprenticeship, which he successfully completed in 2023. This foundational training gave him real-world, practical experience in crop production, plant health, and hands-on techniques across a variety of horticultural systems. Building upon this, he enrolled in the BSc (Honours) programme in Sustainable Horticulture & Agriculture Technology at Pershore College, where he is currently in the final phase of his degree, finishing in 2026. The programme has equipped him with knowledge in sustainable practices, agri-tech innovations, environmental considerations, crop protection, and modern cultivation technologies.

Ross’s work and promise have been recognised by industry peers and institutions through several prestigious honours:

In 2024, Ross was awarded a The Colegrave Seabrook Foundation Smart Garden  Scholarship, recognising students in horticulture who show excellence and promise - colegraveseabrookfoundation.org.ukAlso in 2024, he was one of the winners of the IPPS Europe Six Packer Awards, placing among rising talents acknowledged by the International Plant Propagators’ Society in Europe. These accolades reflect Ross’s ability to combine academic success with applied skills and his leadership within the horticulture sector.

Beyond formal study, Ross is heavily involved in initiatives intended to share knowledge, inspire future generations, and strengthen the horticultural community.

One such project is Get Children Growing, a pilot scheme that delivered 10,000 free, eco-friendly sunflower grow kits to primary schools in the UK. This initiative is designed not just to teach children about plant growth and ecology, but to instil a sense of environmental stewardship and hands-on curiosity from an early age.

Ross also founded and runs The Plant Pod, a hub for horticultural content, podcasts, grants & bursaries, articles, videos, and more. Through The Plant Pod, he amplifies voices in the sector and supports cross-sector dialogue on sustainable horticulture and plant science.  In each episode of his podcast, he has a guest from within the horticulture industry; these guests range from managing directors, plant growers, horticulture therapists, and celebrity gardeners.

One of Ross’s major recent accomplishments was organising and hosting the inaugural “Helping You Grow a Better Future” horticulture conference at Pershore College on 12 February 2025.

This sold-out event brought together students from Levels 1, 2, 3, and the BSc programme, along with industry experts, thought leaders, and technology providers. About 150 - 160 attendees,  participated in a full day of talks and networking.

Speakers addressed a diverse array of topics: sustainable crop protection, drone technology in horticulture, emerging plant cultivars and trends, industry futures, air pruning technology, among others. Key organisations represented included Mr Plant Geek, The Boyd Partnership, ICL, Impact Aerial, Proptek UK, The Colegrave Seabrook Foundation, HTA,  and WCG.

Season 4 Episode 134 Better Plants Ireland ( Audio )22 Jul 202600:55:59

About Better Plants

https://betterplants.ie/

We source all our seaweed from Irish suppliers and ensure they are a 100% natural product. We have been using seaweed products in our garden for years and found that there were a lot of products that didn’t really do what they claimed to do. They contained chemicals and some were so watered down that the goodness was gone out of the seaweed.

A lot of plant food out there is exactly that, food for the plant. They do nothing for the soil. We set about looking for a product that was not only natural and feed the plant, but also feed the soil. Over-use of the same soil will result in poor crops resulting in the need to use chemical plant foods more often.

We have some really great suppliers around the west coast of Ireland who hand harvested seaweed called Ascophyllum Nodosum. This is a particular brown algae species living in “extreme” conditions. It had to adapt to 2 periods of emersion of 6 hours in any 24 hours of a full year which explains part of its specific natural composition. Better Plants is traceable right to the exact location and seaweed date of harvesting along the eastern Atlantic Irish shoreline. This cold water shoreline is particularly rich in minerals and remains unpolluted by heavy metalsMany commercial extracts contain a low amount of processed seaweeds but high levels of additives. Better Plants is based purely on 100% fresh seaweed. You can therefore properly assess the real benefits of the seaweed after regular applications based on low concentrations. The purity and the integrity are obvious by the characteristic odour of the fresh seaweed and the green-olive colour identical to raw seaweed. In addition, low temperatures do not alternate the general composition of the seaweed polysaccharides.

We also supply a range of natural and organic animal feed. These products are made from 100% organic seaweed.

We use this milled seaweed to feed the animals on our farm. We find that all of our animals are a lot healthier as a result. We find that more and more people are using Better Plants products because they are 100% natural, organic and have all the vitamins and minerals to keep your animals healthy.

Season 4 Episode 131 Kate Henning ( Audio ) 01 Jul 202600:59:33

www.katehenningplantingdesign.co.uk

My background

I was awarded full Membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists in 1994 and worked in private practice for 15 years on projects including railway station refurbishments for London Underground and the construction of  properties in London and the Home Counties for prestigious house builders and private clients.

In 2008 I took a career break and for a couple of years was a Foster Carer and had a great time introducing children to gardening, especially growing edibles. I was amazed to discover that some children are completely unaware of where and how fruit and vegetables grow.

In 2014 I started my own garden maintenance business which was very successful and then decided to use my design and drawing skills from my days in architecture and train to become a garden designer. After much consideration I studied for a Diploma in Planting Design with the London College of Garden Design at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. I loved every moment and was awarded the Diploma with Distinction. I then went on to take their Certificate in Plantsmanship, and passed with Distinction.

In 2026 I exhibited a show garden in the Balcony & Container Garden section of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with my friend and fellow designer Susie Kennedy. The garden was called 'Tales from the Riverbank' and was our first dive into the deep waters of show gardens. We were awarded a Gold Medal.

My Planting Design Studio is the result of all my knowledge of construction, planting design, botany and technical drawing, converging to create something really special to me. I love every minute of what I do and consider it a pleasure and a privilege to create beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces.

I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and I have an allotment where I love to spend stolen moments and grow for pure pleasure.

I look forward to meeting you.

Season 4 Episode 129 Emily Moorcroft Garden Designer ( Video )17 Jun 202600:47:20

About me

I’m Emily Moorcroft, a Dublin-based garden designer with a slightly unusual background. I spent over a decade as a detective in London, including several years investigating cyber crime, before taking a career break that gave me the space to rethink what I wanted from life.

I retrained, completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Garden Design, and realised how much joy I get from creating outdoor spaces that make people feel happy, calm and connected.

I now run Moorcroft Garden Design, where I focus on accessible, sensory-rich gardens that are shaped around the people who use them, not just how they look. My goal is simple: to create thoughtful gardens that genuinely improve everyday life.

In 2026, I was selected as one of the designers for RTÉ’s Super Garden, where I created Bear’s Wild Corner for Maria and Bear. The garden brought together playful planting, accessible design and practical family living, with a strong focus on creating a space that felt joyful, usable and full of life. It was a brilliant opportunity to show the kind of gardens I care about most: spaces that are beautiful, personal and genuinely make a difference.

Season 4 Episode 122 Edible Gardens Audio06 May 202601:02:46

https://www.edible-gardens.net/

We are a small family run fruit and nut tree nursery in the southeast of Ireland and are passionate about the propagation of fruit, nut and unusual edible plants.

Our fruit and nut tree nursery is situated on a 4.5 acre smallholding which has not been ploughed or  chemically sprayed in over 20 years and is host to diverse plant, insect and wildlife which includes the rare Tawny mining bee(Andrena Fulva).

All fruit and nut tree varieties we have for sale are planted at our nursery so in time we can give first hand advice on growing each tree.

We grow our fruit and nut trees without chemicals or artificial fertilizers.

If we need to fertilize our fruit and nut trees we use comfrey tea, seaweed or chicken manure pellets.

On the rare occasion where a fruit or nut tree becomes overwhelmed with pests we use a targeted approach and use Organic approved Pyrethrum daisy spray in the morning to avoid harming beneficial insects.

Our Bareroot fruit and nut trees are grown in beds without ploughing the soil. These beds need very little added medium each year and require less water than potted plants we believe this is the most sustainable way to produce fruit and nut trees.

The pots we use for berry plants and shrubs at our nursery are second hand which we collect from other nurseries. We use tall grow bags for our trees as we believe the tall bags provide the best growing environment for tree roots and avoid roots circling in the pot.

We are continually looking at ways in which we can improve the sustainability of our nursery and hope in the future to be Organically certified.

Anthony, Lola and Shayla.

Season 4 Episode 121 Charlotte The Gardener Audio05 May 202600:55:01

Hi, I’m Charlotte, a Garden Designer and award winning Horticulturalist with a passion for creating exquisite outdoor spaces that elevate the way you live. For me, garden design isn’t just about plants and pathways - it’s about you.

Since 2018, I’ve been transforming gardens across York and North Yorkshire, designing tailored landscapes that seamlessly blend beauty, functionality, and luxury.

Whether you dream of a serene retreat for quiet mornings, a breath-taking space for entertaining, or a natural haven that reflects your personality, I bring creativity, expertise, and a personal touch to every project.

Season 4 Episode 120 Leonie Cornelius Audio05 May 202600:52:09

Multi Award winning garden designerLeonie Cornelius

Her design philosophy is shaped by a richly multicultural upbringing. Raised in Germany and Ireland, and deeply influenced by time spent living on a Greek island as a child, Leonie draws from both the precision and structure of Northern European design and the sensual, seasonal rhythms of Mediterranean life. These diverse influences inform her love for blending strong architectural forms with wild, emotive planting — a language of contrast and harmony that runs through all her work.

After earning a degree in interior architecture at ATU Sligo and garden design at KLC School of Design in London, Leonie discovered her passion at the threshold between inside and out — where structured design meets wild nature. That intersection is where her work lives and breathes.

Her most recent show garden, Nourish, a Gold Medal winner at Bord Bia Bloom 2025, is a perfect example: a sensory apothecary courtyard designed to offer restoration and reconnection through scent, structure, and stillness. Through every project, Leonie explores how gardens — and our everyday environments — can support presence, wellbeing, and joy.

This ethos led to the creation of w|ė — Leonie’s design practice, dedicated to what she calls “wild-based living.” Through w|ė, Leonie brings together garden design, interior architecture, courses and creative collaborations — all rooted in the belief that beauty, nature and intentional design have the power to transform how we live.

As the world becomes faster and more digital, Leonie’s work reminds us to come back to what is real: soil, scent, season, breath. Her gardens are not just designed — they’re felt. And in that feeling, something important happens. We remember ourselves.

Your garden is more than an outdoor space - it’s an extension of your home, a reflection of your style, and a place to slow down and breathe. My design process is rooted in understanding how you want to feel in your garden. From elegant planting schemes to architectural structure, I create immersive landscapes that evolve beautifully with the seasons.

I work closely with discerning clients who appreciate fine craftsmanship, timeless design, and a stress-free experience. Whether it’s a country estate, a walled town garden, or a contemporary landscape, my approach is always personal, considered, and led by your vision.
