John Kobik | Living with Purpose and Finding Your Chi16 Aug 202101:08:10
In this episode, Simon speaks with John Kobik — host of the Chi for Yourself Podcast. About John: For 47 of his 70 years, John Kobik has been connected to "the media." When he was 8 years old he knew what I wanted to do with his life. He began in radio, but he's also done on-camera work, including commercials, films, television, and industrials. Add to these a bit of teaching at junior colleges and lots of voice-over work.  At age 35 he hitched a ride from the East Coast of the US to Hollywood. He had no car, no job offers, and no contacts to rely on. After a couple of years in Hollywood, he moved south to the town of Laguna Beach, where he still lives. These days he's mostly working online, including hosting the show Chi For Yourself.  Listen to Chi for Yourself: http://chiforyourself.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/giohost?lang=en Get coaching with Simon: simonjedrew.com/coaching/ Support the podcast: patreon.com/coaching/ Learn more about your ad choices. I’ve been trying to see things for what they are, and not just for what they appear to be. And I say that I’m “trying” because one conclusion that I keep coming to is that no matter how hard I try, I will always simply be me, as I am, viewing this incredibly complex world through a lens that is limited in scope to say the least. It’s as if there’s an extravagant party happening in the mansion, and I’m trying to see what’s happening inside by looking through a keyhole on the kitchen door. I know there’s plenty of grand and exciting things happening, but for now all I can do is trust that with enough time I’ll be able to put a few pieces together.  I tend to have quite an obsessive personality, and I have definitely jumped around a lot in my life. From a young age my parents could see that if I was going to try something then I really wanted to try it. If I was riding horses then I wanted to be the cowboy! If I was playing music then I wanted to be on the stage becoming the best entertainer I could be! When I went to church I wanted to look the part, and when I wasn’t going to church I wanted to have all of the perfectly good reasons why I wasn’t. I’d like to say that this kind of “all in or nothing” attitude came down to a desire to give 100% to everything I was doing, but honestly in hindsight I can say that I wasn’t trying to go all in on anything. Rather, I think I was trying to give the appearance that I knew what life was all about when in reality I had absolutely no idea, and in trying to appear to be something, I now see that I was simply hiding the fact that I knew nothing. To me, the appearance of having the answers was more important than actually having any answers, and so I jumped around from one thing to another, always tasting but never being nourished.  Have you ever noticed that we all seem to think we have the answers? You only have to look as far back as your last family gathering to see that we all have a pretty unhealthy relationship with the words “I don’t know.” Just look around the world and see the division that is created simply because we can’t admit that we don’t have all the answers. Left vs right, religious vs atheist, woman vs man, black vs white. Every belief structure is the one true way, every ideology is the winner, every experience is the truth. But how could that be? How is it that there are so many ways, so many winners and so many truths? Well if you’ll let me, I’d like to invite you to look through the same keyhole that I’m looking through so that you might see what I see. Get comfortable, turn on your imagination, and meditate on the ideas to follow. How do humans perceive time? Well, it seems clear that we have an extremely narrow vision of time. This narrow vision is probably shown most clearly in our tendency to think only within the confines of our own lifetimes. We’re driven by all kinds of biological and psychological phenomena that help us to survive day to day, we Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

ARTICLE LINK: CLICK HERE PATREON: CLICK HERE COACHING: CLICK HERE WEBSITE: CLICK HERE YOUTUBE: CLICK HERE FACEBOOK: CLICK HERE INSTAGRAM: CLICK HERE LINKEDIN: CLICK HERE TWITTER: CLICK HERE REDDIT: CLICK HERE SHOW SCRIPT:  It’s now clear that we’re living in uncertain and unprecedented times. With the coronavirus stretching it’s reach around the world it’s becoming clearer with every new headline that the world we live in is undergoing a shift that will shape generations to come.  The great Stoic philosopher Epictetus once remarked that “Circumstances don't make the man, they only reveal him to himself.” In this same way it would be correct to say that global challenge reveals humanity to itself. The kind of global unrest seen at this time is of the sort that breaks down paradigms and reveals to us what’s real and what’s fake, what matters and what doesn’t, what’s worth pursuing and what we can leave aside. We’re living in a time where millions of people will be out of work soon if they aren’t already, governments are debating spending trillions of dollars to keep the economies of the world flowing, and collectively we are being forced into a position where we all need to ask ourselves how we should act in this specific situation and also how we should act moving forward into the rest of this decade which, I assure you, will hold a great deal more challenges than what we’ve seen so far in just the first three months. Ultimately what we’re seeing now is a global shift in consciousness far greater than any of us have seen in our lifetimes, and I think that possibly the most important question to ask at the moment is this: what’s been missing, and therefore what must be rediscovered?  For those who are philosophically inclined, these questions aren’t simply stored away for that rainy day or for that global pandemic. Rather, these questions are a part of everyday life. In fact, the Stoic philosopher Seneca once suggested that the budding student of philosophy should do for his mind what the soldier does for his body in times of peace, and that is to rehearse the very horror he hopes to be prepared for, to learn what makes him healthy and what makes him ill, and to exercise those things within his control so that when tragedy strikes he can confidently say, “I knew”. See, the serious student of philosophy may not be surprised by times like these, but rather he might be glad to find that his training has paid off. And this isn’t to say that he wouldn’t experience hardship or difficulties. He may have his fair share of troubles to deal with, but what he wouldn’t say is that he didn’t know. This knowledge brings strength.  One particular exercise that the student of philosophy might engage in is that of experiencing the world from an outsider's perspective, so that instead of being a mere player in the game, or being played by the game (whichever side you take on the free will debate), he can stand back and watch the game from afar with the hope that he might come back having learned some of the rules, because Learn more about your ad choices. The Core Ideas of Stoicism20 Feb 202000:27:41
About the Episode  In this episode Simon Drew gives a concise overview of the core ideas of Stoicism. He starts with the main goal of Stoicism, which is to align with nature. He then gives an overview of the way in which we can get to that goal, and then lays out some of the best "tools and tactics" of Stoicism that can help us to live a virtiuous and examined life.  Key Points:  1 - The goal of Stoicism is to "align with Nature". This means to understand that you are not separate from Nature. You are a part of it in the same way that a Lion is part of it, but you need to understand what your unique place within Nature is. To understand your unique place is also to understand your unique virtues as a human being. "Eudaimonia" is the phrase that Stoics used to describe our end goal, and this can be translated to "flourishing".  2 - If aligning with nature is the end goal, then virtue is our aim. To be virtuous is to be a good human, and to live a life that takes into account our own unique virtues as humans. Our most unique virtue is that of rationality and correct judgement, and the Stoics taught that we should use the faculty of reason to effectively judge how to be virtuous.  3 - The Stoics gave us a rundown of what they called the four "Cardinal Virtues". These are courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom. These are our aims, and when we can fully embody these virtues then we can move closer to achieving Eudaimonia.  4 - The Stoics had many great "tools and tactics" that we can use to help us to reason our way into a better state of being. Some include:  5 - The Dichotomy of Control. This basically means that there are some things within our control, and there are many more things that are outside our control. The most effective way to live life is to focus only on what we can control, and to forget the rest.  6 - The good, the bad and the indifferent. This is the Stoic idea that there are some things that are good (virtues), there are some that are bad (vices), and there are some things that simply aren't good or bad. For example, courage is good, it's opposite (cowardice) is bad, and something like money would be indifferent seeing as it can be used for good or bad.  7 - Amor Fati is a latin phrase that means "love your fate". This simply means that we need to learn how to accept and make use of everything that happens to us. Good and bad things will happen to you, and the most effective way to face these circumstances is to learn how to love whatever happens to you. In that way you'll be able to live as if life is happening for you, not too you.  8 - Memento Mori is another latin phrase that means "remember death." This is a mantra that the Stoics used so that they would always know that time is not guaranteed. We could die today, next week, next month, or 80 years from now, but the fact of life is that none of us make it out alive. When we understand this we are better prepared to make use of the time we do have, which is now.  9 - Rehearse poverty. This is the exercise of practicing the things that you're afraid of. For example, the Stoics, like Seneca, would set aside a time when they would live as if they had very little. By doing this they would come to see that poverty in itself is not scary or evil at all. This is aligned with our modern understanding of psychology in that the best way to overcome a fear is to voluntarily subject yourself to the thing you're afraid of.  10 - Negative visualisation is another technique for understanding your fears and anxieties. The basic idea is that there will always be terrible things that happen, but better the devil you know than the one you don't. So imagine all of the terrible things that could happen, and you'll come to one of a few possible conclusions. For one, the thing that might happen may not be scary at all, in which case you can stop worrying. Maybe the thi Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
A Brief History of Stoicism19 Feb 202000:15:11
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:  Stoicism began as one of the major schools of philosophy within the Hellenistic period in the mediterranean. For context, Hellenistic literally means “one who uses the Greek language”. This period is marked to have started around the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and some estimates suggest that it ended in 146 BC  following the invasion of the Greek heartlands by Rome. Most people agree that this period officially ended in 31 BC.  We talk about Hellenism as a period in time, but we can also talk about the “Hellenistic schools of thought”, or the “Hellenistic Philosophies”. This was the period when Greece gave rise to the first structures of Democracy, and places like Athens, where Stoicism began, were bustling with new inventions and ideas. It was a cultural expansion unlike any other time in History, and we have that to thank for much of our western culture that we enjoy today.  I have a great interview with Michael Tremblay where we discuss the ins and outs of the Hellenistic philosophies, but for now it’s important to know that this period in ancient Greece was marked by massive advancements and explorations into art, theatre, mathematics, sciences, music, literature and of course, philosophy, including schools of philosophy that you may have heard of, like the Cynics, the Skeptics, the Epicureans, and of course, Stoicism, which all belonged to the “Hellenistic” tradition.  And so that brings us to the birth of Stoicism.  Zeno of Citium was by all accounts the official founder of the Stoic school of philosophy. The story goes that Zeno was a wealthy merchant who was shipwrecked while traveling to Athens with a load full of purple dye. This was very expensive cargo as this die was extracted painstakingly from sea snails, and it was seen as a symbol of luxury and royalty to use such a colour. And as Donald Robertson puts it so eloquently, Zeno’s fortune came from and now returned to the sea.  So now Zeno is stuck in Athens. What does he do? Well the legend goes that Zeno did what any of us would have done; he traveled to the Oracle of Delphi to receive guidance from the God Apollo. There, the Oracle told him that he was to “dye himself with the colour, not of dead shellfish, but of dead men.”  Zeno interpreted this to mean that he should learn from the great thinkers of the past, and began at once to read about people like Socrates, which is very important to know as the Stoic philosophy is widely considered to be a derivative of the Socratic teachings, especially with its focus on virtue as the main good in life.  And so the legend continues that as Zeno was reading about Socrates, he asked the bookseller, “tell me where I can find a man like this?”. And because Athens was a town full of thinkers and philosophers the bookseller pointed out the window at a man called Crates of Thebes, a famous Cynic philosopher.  And so Zeno went on to study with Crates for a couple of decades before he started his own school of philosophy in around 300BC on the stairs of a painted porch in Athens called the Stoa Poikile, thus, Stoicism is created - a philosophy that was founded in the principle that a good life is one that is aimed first at virtue, and is lived in alignment with Nature.  We really don’t have many writings from the early Greek Stoics, and it’s not until Stoicism makes its way to Rome that we really start to get some great literature to sink our teeth into. It’s important to note that between Greece and Rome there were many notable philosophers who lead the Stoic school and added to the teachings of Zeno. Some of these include Cleanthes, the second head of the Stoic school, and Chrysippus, the third head. And we also have Diogenes of Babylon, who travelled to Rome in 155BC with other philosophers and spread these Greek ideas to the Roman Empire. And so here we are in Rome, an Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Stoicism, personal development, and the path of progress - that's what the Practical Stoic podcast was all about, and we retain this message now in The Walled Garden podcast and community. This episode is a re-release of an old podcast episode of the Practical Stoic Podcast (before rebranding to The Walled Garden). I have now made the choice to publish all pre-2020 episodes in order to give the complete view of my path through Stoicism, moving from the more practical personal-developmental ideas toward the deeper philosophical and theological understanding of Stoicism. The podcast is, of course, now called The Walled Garden. The Walled Garden came about in late 2021, and is a collaboration between myself, Sharon Lebell, and Kai Whiting. The Walled Garden is not just a podcast—it's a community of like-minded philosophers and seekers who are dedicated to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, virtue, and the divine. We hope you'll join us at thewalledgarden.com.
