182: Public Speaking Tips No One Ever Tells You05 Apr 202200:22:00

There is no quicker way to make an impact on your reputation than standing on stage in front of a room of people staring at you, listening to your every word.

Here are the lesser known tips on public speaking to help set you up for success. Tune in to hear a series of practical tips from an experienced speaker who isn’t afraid to dish out the inside scoop. Learn how to get the best out of your relationship with the tech team, how to cover your bases with a rehearsal run-through, and what to put on the monitor at your feet. Key Points:

•    A snippet from Molly’s introduction at a recent conference she spoke at.

•    How she felt while the host was setting the stage for her to speak.

•    What we will discuss during today’s conversation: public speaking tips nobody tells you about.

•    Tip number one: listen to the tech people’s advice, but don’t let them run your presentation.

•    This week’s indestructible tip: have a person in the crowd who is going to manage your reputation.

Tweetables:

“Wear a wardrobe or pick a wardrobe that has flexibility to it, that you feel comfortable in it and you won't have any malfunctions.” — @MollyMcPherson[0:19:50]

“For every talk, it helps to have a person. What I mean by that is a person who's going to help manage your reputation.” — @MollyMcPherson[0:20:42]

181: When Will Smith Slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in Real Time 05 Apr 202200:29:40

By now most people will be somewhat familiar with the controversial events of the 2022 Oscars. Apart from the awards and winners, the incident in which Will Smith hit Chris Rock after a joke aimed at Jada Pinkett Smith, has clearly stolen the headlines and overshadowed the entire night.

The situation provides a great opportunity to look at how a crisis unfolds in real-time in the contemporary climate and the role of social and digital media in the process of public response. One of the main questions that arise, especially through the lens of PR, is around the short- and long-term effects that this will have on both of the actors' careers.

Tuning into this episode, you can expect a brief look at what actually happened, why it might have happened in the way that it did, what this will mean for those involved, and some thoughts on the best ways that the PR teams can help their clients respond.

Key Points From This Episode:

•    The different strengths of TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram for posting content.

•    Some of the responses and comments online to Will Smith's actions.

•    Thoughts on the effects of the incident on Chris Rock's career and reputation.

•    What this means for Will Smith going forward for the rest of award season, and his career.

•    Putting the event in the context of the last two years and the Black Lives Matter movement.

•    The PR teams that will be helping both actors with their responses.

•    A theory on Will Smith's mindset going into the award show and how this played out.

•    Final thoughts on the aftermath of Oscar night for the two actors.

•    Today's Indestructible PR Tip: the dangers of out-of-control emotions, and the importance of accountability.

Tweetables:

“There's certainly a lot of commentary about the Oscars. But what happened with Will Smith and Chris Rock, it doesn't even matter who won.” — @MollyMcPherson [0:08:

The story of Alec Baldwin in the aftermath of the tragic shooting death of Halyana Hutchins on the set of the film "Rust" is worth following if you follow public relations and crisis communication.

From the first news stories from the Albequeque filmset to the "pop-up" press conference Baldwin held on a busy road in Vermont, we have been following Baldwin's media interactions over his involvement in the tragedy.

Baldwin's latest public relations strategies were revealed in his sitdown interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopolus on 20/20.

Jody Fisher, a veteran PR guy and former radio reporter, joins Molly on the epsiode. In addition to his over 20 years of experience as a publicist in NYC and national markets, Jody is the Vice President of Public Relations at Austin Williams.

269: The Fine Line Between Apology and Denial: A Case Study of Colleen Ballinger and Matt Rife28 Nov 202300:35:58

Apologies, denials, and online disasters. Molly is breaking down the Matt Rife and Colleen Ballinger PR crisis.

This episode is all about perception management. As soon as the backlash starts, every subsequent step needs to be calculated. Often, this fine line between apology and denial can alter reputations and determine careers' trajectory in a blink.

These three key takeaways:

1. Exploring the anatomy of an apology, and what happens when it's done wrong, using Colleen Ballinger as our case study. Molly discusses how her previous behavior led to a backlash, how she responded to it, and how effective (or not) her response was.

2. Looking at "Bro humor" with Matt Rife. Molly dissects how he handled the backlash towards a controversial joke he threw out there and the marketing tactics he's using to survive it.

3. Understanding the differences in their responses - from Ballinger's rebranding strategy to Rife's doubling down. Who’s approach will work in the long run? There are predictions to be made and lessons to be learned.

163: Is There Any Truth to the Saying, "All Publicity is Good Publicity?"30 Nov 202100:24:10

The actor Jake Gyllenhall knows all too well that bad publicity may not be the best publicity when your name is trending because you broke up with a girlfriend more than ten years ago.

Having this ex-girlfriend record a song about the breakup and then upload a 10-minute video to YouTube is the sort of negative publicity that will never disappear. Especially if the video has over 17 million views.

The Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde once said, "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."

In this episode, determining whether this statement is true and which factors determine when negative publicity is too much for a brand to handle.

161: The Biggest Media Interview Mistakes of the Month (and what we can learn from them).16 Nov 202100:33:54

A media interview could lead to one of three outcomes:

  1. You nail it.
  2. You get through it.
  3. Your poor performance creates its own crisis.

Knowing how to prepare for a media interview increases the likelihood of a positive outcome.

Listen to a few of the mistakes we found in recent media interviews and livestreams to learn how to succeed in your next media interview.

  • The guffaw that turned a serious message from a member of the U.S. Cabinet into a joke.
  • Don't call your own press conference on a whim on the side of the road, like Alec Baldwin.
  • Make sure the news you share on the Today Show is accurate and does not infringe on trademarks.

154: Why Social Media Sleuthing Can Bring it All Down Quickly28 Sep 202100:20:04

What happens when an army of people begins to dig to solve a mystery?

They quickly find answers.

The intense interest in the Gabby Petito missing case (now murder) also led to an intense interest in discovering why the case became such a sensational news story.

The answer: social media sleuthing

Young, social media-savvy women used TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to desperately get to the bottom of what happened to the 22-year-old who documented her travels to state and national parks with her boyfriend / fiancé Brian Laundrie for their YouTube channel and Instagram.

The same desire to help find the Gabby Petito killer is also used to investigate any wrongdoing by a company, organization or leadership.

In this episode, connecting true crime obsession to why communicators must be a little obsessed with the online digging of their customers.

And why social media sleuthing can bring it all down quickly if you have something to hide.

Three ways to mitigate and control the chaos when people decide to start digging around about your organization.

Is it time to cancel the cancel culture once and for all?

Not really.

But it might be time to rethink what the term actually means.

Many people know the online shaming that happens when a person's past actions, affiliations or offensive social media posts return to haunt the reputation, but many disagree on the reason for it.

Is it a mob of spiteful Twitter users or people who want certain names held responsible for problematic behavior?

USA Today reporter David Oliver discusses his recent article about the online phenomenon, from examining the true origin of the term "cancel culture" to the current offenders.

Here are a few...

1.  Where did the term 'cancel culture' originate? (5:05)
2.  Chrissy Teigen's behavior (7:35)
3.  How the political
used the term. (15:13)
