Priceless Ink: The Factors Behind Sky-High Autograph Prices06 Nov 202400:17:42

Ever wondered why some autographs carry eye-popping price tags? In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of autograph pricing and reveal why a signature from legends like Tom Brady or Shohei Ohtani can cost a fortune. It’s not as simple as just the athlete’s fame – the final price is often shaped by a mix of athlete contracts, signing demand, competition among memorabilia companies, and even event logistics.

We’ll uncover who really sets the price, and why it’s not usually the athlete deciding. Instead, companies negotiate huge contracts with top athletes, setting prices to balance demand, time, and exclusivity. We’ll also explore how some athletes, like Hall of Famers who sign more frequently, offer affordable options, while others command a premium because of their limited availability or post-championship timing.

Join us as we break down the hidden factors behind high autograph costs, including how the timing of a signing, public appearances, and even holiday gift-giving season all impact the price collectors pay. From high-demand names to practical limits on autograph sessions, discover why the most coveted autographs come with a hefty price tag – and why, even if prices dropped, the demand might be impossible to meet.

Priceless or Overpriced? Debating the $4.4 Million Tag on Ohtani's 50th Homer30 Oct 202400:21:39

In this episode, we dive deep into the wild world of sports memorabilia with a hot topic on everyone’s radar: Shohei Ohtani’s historic 50th home run ball. It’s been valued at an astonishing $4.4 million, but is it truly worth that? Join us as we explore the factors driving this massive price tag—from Ohtani’s iconic dual-threat status in MLB to the unprecedented demand for collectibles tied to his legacy. We’ll debate whether this home run ball deserves the "priceless" label or if it’s just an overhyped collectible in today’s booming sports market. Don’t miss this episode if you’re a fan of baseball, investing in sports memorabilia, or just love a good debate!

To Sign or Not to Sign: The Risks of Unlicensed Memorabilia23 Aug 202400:13:08

In this episode, Matt Powers dives deep into the controversial world of unlicensed sports memorabilia. Should you get it autographed, or are you better off steering clear? We'll explore the allure of unlicensed memorabilia—it's often cheaper and more readily available, making it a tempting option for collectors on a budget. But is it worth the risk?

Matt will discuss the potential downsides, including the legality issues that can arise, as well as concerns about the quality of the items. From faded logos to poor craftsmanship, unlicensed memorabilia can leave you with a collection that’s not only less valuable but also less authentic.

Tune in as we weigh the pros and cons, helping you make an informed decision before you get that unlicensed item signed. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting, this episode will arm you with the knowledge you need to navigate the world of sports memorabilia.

Learn the Secret How To CORRECTLY Prep Sports Cards for an Autograph Signing in Under 1 Minute21 Mar 202200:05:32

We all want to get the best possible autograph on our sports card.  Ever get a card back from a signing and think WTF  happened?   The ink looks like it didn't dry in the place it went onto the card or has holes in it.  Streaks everywhere.

I know we all want to blame the autograph promoter for the bad autograph, but often times, it has to do with the crappy surface of the card, especially with modern cards such as Prizm and Chrome and their glossy surface.

If a card’s surface doesn’t have anything for the ink to stick to, its hard to get a good quality autograph.

So how do we fix this?

That's today's topic.

He Lost His Most Important Sports Cards - 10 Tips To Protect Yourself When Sending Cards to PSA17 Feb 202200:12:25

We’ve all had or known someone who has had packages lost/stolen in the mail.  Seems to be a running joke with the post office.

Just saw a video on @nothinglike90scards Instagram that I shared last video of a FedEx employee stealing 5 of his most important cards en route to PSA.

With PSA re-opening up its economy service I am sure more and more people will be shipping cards out to them.  What are somethings you can do to protect yourself in case something like @nothinglike90scards happens to you?

Not all of this will protect you 100%, but you will feel better knowing you took some of these steps.

Let’s take a look at 10 things to do to protect yourself.

#1 Insurance

Obvious one here, but if you can’t self insure or the items you are sending are irreplaceable, I would add insurance.  It is fairly cheap.  Put it for the replacement value.

#2 Use correct size box

UPS and FedEx are sticklers for that 4” rule around the outside of the materials.

#3 Take a photo of your shipping label and the cards being sent to PSA before packaging them up.   Make this 1 image.  All together.

#4 Info on shipping label

I never ship anything from Powers Sports Memorabilia.  That makes me a target.  I use a different name on the ship from address.

If your business name is Joey’s Sports Cards, maybe just put your name on it and remove the sports cards.

#5 Use CHECK CONTENTS TAPE

This is the tape that tells you to check the contents if seal is broken.  A person opening your box would have to have same exact tape in order to seal it back up again.  Might deter someone.

#6 if shipping expensive items consider an AirTag

What do they do?  According to Apple, Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy.  Air tags cost about $30.

#7 Get a receipt

When dropping them off at FedEx or USPS for PSA shipments have them scan the package in front of you and give you a receipt.

Now you 100% know they have the package and your insurance is activated.  Nothing worse that just dropping it off and not seeing a scan for 2-3 days.

#8 Drop them off at PSA yourself.

Again, sending tens of thousands of dollars of cards to PSA you might consider dropping them off in person.

#9 Wait for the National

PSA is at the National every year and you can drop your cards off and get them back by the end of the weekend.  Of course, other grading companies are at other shows and offer similar service.

#10 Make your return address a business or PO Box

Nothing worse than having your cards graded and then someone steals it off your porch.  Get it delivered to a location where only you have access to it.  A UPS Store, PO box, or your place of business.

He had $1 MILLION in Sports Cards Stolen - 5 Tips To Protect Yourself, Watch Before It's Too Late11 Feb 202200:10:43

We’ve all heard about recent theft and break-ins in the hobby.   Explosion of the hobby and values going up, stores and collectors are becoming targets.

Just recently, Nat Turner, one of the owners at PSA, just had his car broken into in a locked residential garage overnight, stealing over 1 million in cards.

Fortunately for him,  he was able to recover all of the cards.

With all this craziness going on, what can you do as a collector to protect yourself?  Let’s talk about 5 things you MUST be doing.

What is Global Authentication (GAI) and Should You Be Scared of their COA?25 Dec 202100:06:08
Best Autograph Authentication in Sports? Why you NEED This COA in Your Collection25 Dec 202100:10:50

Why is MLB authentication the best in the baseball memorabilia industry?

5 reasons I believe this to be true.

#1. It is ran by one of the world’s best leagues. Anything associated with the MLB brand you better believe they will do anything and everything to ensure it’s authenticity and accuracy.

#2. It is a witness authentication hologram, meaning a representative from MLB was present for the autograph signing and witnessed the player signing your item.  MLB is not an autograph authentication company like JSA where you can send them items to authenticate. They strictly witness the signings.

#3. Their online database is easy to verify authenticity. Simply type in the code on your item and it will state the item and date it was signed.  While inaccuracies do occasionally occur, their database is very accurate.

#4. Their authentication isn’t available to everyone. Certain companies such as Fanatics have a license to use the authentication program. Makes it a bit more rare and sought after.

#5. They also authenticate game used items they witness at the ballpark. If you ever want to get your game used MLB authenticated item signed, you can have an athlete inscribe Game Used on it. Whereas, if you had an item without the authentication getting an athlete to write Game Used on it can be challenging.

Why Autographs of Current Players Make Horrible Long-Term Investments & What To Buy Instead14 Oct 202100:10:22

It might be a no-brainer to say, but in the autograph world, there are 2 huge categories everything can be broken down into. Items from players there are deceased or retired, and items from players that are still very active or even new.

Eventually, you'll even have to ask yourself, which category is better for my investing? What autographs are better to buy long-term? This can be a hard question to answer. While the new and current players feel so much more exciting and it can be so easy to get caught up in the hype and want to be a part of it.

The reality is this also makes current player items more volatile and unpredictable. For me, that just isn't the game I'm looking to play when it comes to my autographs. So today we're going to talk about why retired and deceased players might be the safer way to go.

Of course, these are just my thoughts and opinions, but it is a huge question that you need to answer for yourself if you're going to be comfortable in this hobby! I'll help you come to your own answer for this question today on the Power's Sports Memorabilia Show!

Best Pen For JERSEYS? Avoid This Pen Before You Get Your Next Item Signed!05 Oct 202100:11:07

I've been hitting on this topic for a few videos now, and I want to keep it going. This is such a minor thing in the grand scheme of collectibles, but when you start narrowing down on just the topic of sports autographs, it is suddenly is a HUGE DEAL!

Do you want your once-in-a-lifetime signed jersey to have a terrible looking signature on it?  Absolutely not.  But what do you do when you just don't know if the sharpie or paint pen you have will look good on that special jersey of yours? Well, I did exactly that! We are going to go through a list of sharpie and paint pen colors on a variety of jersey colors to see how they come out. So the next time you need an autograph put down on your jersey you will know exactly what pen to use! Lots of great information on today's Powers Sports Memorabilia Show!

The Biggest Sports Card Buy Ever. How Fanatics Deal Affects Upper Deck & Why You Must R-E-L-A-X20 Aug 202100:12:18

What an exciting time for the sports card hobby! I have got to say, there has just never been more action going on that in these recent months. Card values rising, the National Convention, companies going public, and now... Fanatics signing an absolutely insane and exclusive deal for rights to the MLB license!? I mean really?

Just wow, what a time for the hobby. After so many years in the hands of Topps, to be jumping to a new organization is just crazy, and I'm sure it will bring with it some very cool new items from Fanatics, but also maybe  help push the other big names to think outside the box and innovate even more. Time can only tell!

In the meantime, I will be discussing what this new deal means for Fanatics, Upper Deck, and the hobby in general. So if you're looking for some quick insights into this historical deal, then check out today's Powers Sports Memorabilia Show!

STOP Overpaying for MICHAEL JORDAN Cards! Watch Before You Buy Your Next One | PSM15 Jun 202100:09:48

Michael Jordan. What else do I need to say? He's one of the marvels of the NBA world, and no matter how hard you try, you just can't ignore what he brings to the sport and to the collectibles hobby! Still, when someone is as big a name as Jordan is, it becomes too easy to tunnel in on the expensive items. The jerseys, basketballs, autographed items. The 1986 Fleer card.  They are amazing items to have, but are they the only thing worth paying for in regards to this idle? I would argue, ABSOLUTELY NOT!  Especially with many of Michael Jordan's cards well over $1,000.

I've talked about it so much on this show. If you want to grow the value of your sports card collection, you can't just focus on the big-ticket items. There is so much more to it than that. I am a huge proponent of looking for those cheaper items, and in this case, cards, that will have huge increases in value once they are graded. Speaking from experience, it works! Plus, these Michael Jordan cards just look dang good.

So, what low-cost sports cards do I think you should go searching for that hold potential for huge value growth? Well, stick through the whole show and you'll learn my TOP 10 CHEAP JORDAN CARD PICKS, today on the Powers Sports Memorabilia Show!

Is PSA Grading Sports Cards Tougher in 2021? Watch Before You Ship Off Your Next Submission | PSM03 Jun 202100:10:48

Well, it finally happened the other day. I got some of my submitted cards back from PSA, and I have to say I was a bit shocked. By a significant amount, I had been graded more PSA 9s than 10s. Now I'm not saying I'm the master of grading cards, but from my overall track record, this was certainly surprising for a modern card submission such as a Lebron James 2018 Panini Revolution.

So this really begs the question. With all the recent PSA events in the 1st half of this year including the purchase of Genamint, has PSA cracked down on its grading standards? In other words, are they even harsher graders than they were in the past? To find out I dug a bit deeper and after talking with some reliable people in the hobby, it looks like this could really be a possibility.

To see what I mean, stick through today's video. I talk about some important PSA acquisitions recently, and also some numbers from my PSA submission group gemmint.com that are just too hard to argue with. Find out about it all on today's Powers Sports Memorabilia Show!

10 MISTAKES Buying Ungraded Sports Cards Collectors Should AVOID01 Jun 202100:11:55

In the sports card collecting hobby there is an obvious choice you have to make at the beginning of every purchase. Do you buy the ungraded card, or do you buy the already graded card? Of course, the graded cards cost more, but at least you know upfront the value and quality of that card!

However, if you're looking at making more profit off selling sports cards, buying the ungraded cards and taking the risk that they grade a 10 can sometimes pay off HUGE!

If you are right and they get those coveted grades, you just hit the jackpot.  Still, there are some major things you need to keep in mind if you're going to start buying ungraded sports cards.

Today, I talk about 10 things buyers should avoid when looking at the ungraded sports card market. From looking at the centering of the card, to choosing who you buy from, to understanding which sports card grading company you are choosing.  I could probably go on and give more than 10, but we have to start somewhere, and these are some big points, so find them all out today on the Powers Sports Memorabilia Show!
