| Ep. 41: Is vaping causing your acne/dryness/dermatitis/premature ageing? | 24 Sep 2024 | 00:24:45 | |
Increasing volumes of reports, studies and anecdotal evidence lands vaping in hot water - not only for the deleterious effects it has on overall health, but for this issues it has potential for causing with your skin. Vaping has been linked to increased trans-epidermal water loss and dehydration, dryness, acne flare-ups, inflamed skin disorders like dermatitis, accelerated skin ageing and impaired healing ability. Therefore, it serves as an important line of questioning when consulting with clients and patients, especially if advanced treatment modalities and skincare infused with active ingredients is the proposed treatment avenue. And there's a high chance that a sector of your clients regularly vape! This episode of The Power of Protons will unveil how vaping affects the skin, why it can have this negative affect and what the latest regulations are here in Australia. | Ep. 31: The Secret Behind Controlling the Delivery of Acids in Skincare | 09 Jun 2024 | 00:15:53
Traditionally, free, unbuffered acids have been associated with some pretty negative side effects like irritation, inflammation, superficial burn and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Yet, the more you learn about the chemistry of acids, the more you learn about how acids truly work in the skin and why buffering significantly harnesses their ability to effectuate the regenerative effects we seek when correcting and managing undesired skin conditions. When it comes to ACIDS working effectively in skincare formulas and professional solutions, the holy grail is to maximise the potential yield of protons (so keeping the acids in their free form), yet carefully calibrate the formula to work with the most precise activity, ensuring negative side effects are minimised. This episode of The Power of Protons will take you on a behind the scenes tour of the engine powering pHformula, the PH-DVC™ and they key to controlling the delivery of acids into the skin.
| Ep. 30: The Power of Your Facial Muscles | 02 Jun 2024 | 00:29:11 | |
Our faces are a powerful communication tool. The expressions our face can make depict our love and admiration of something or someone, our dissatisfaction or anger, our fear, our frustration, our level of relaxation – basically, our mood at any given time. Whether we’re smiling, emphasising a point, or frowning, it’s our facial muscles that provide the face movement and govern the shapes in which our face can create. As skin specialists, we work alongside (or more specifically on top of) the facial muscular system, and we can enhance circulation and nutrient supply to the dermis and epidermis through facial massage. On today’s episode of the Power of Protons, we’re exploring the muscles that populate our face, the benefits of facial massage and how we can incorporate this manual technique into a pHformula controlled chemical skin resurfacing procedure.
| Ep. 29: What we learnt at the Art Club, Barcelona | 26 May 2024 | 00:22:12 | |
A couple of weeks ago we had the privilege to travel to the pHformula Art Club nestled in the heart of El Born, Barcelona. Accompanied by five enthusiastic skin therapists, we fully immersed ourselves in the culture, the science and the heart of pHformula where we learnt more about the skin, advanced resurfacing techniques, and elevating value that we can offer our communities. Just like our manifesto reads, here, there is no room for conventional. No room for complacency. There is only space for the experimental ones that want to learn, to teach, to play and (in the case of our family of skin specialists across the globe) to solve the skin of the world. There were countless take-homes that we gathered as a group, across our 5 days in Barcelona, 3 of which were at the Art Club. pHformula’s Internation Education Team took us on a journey filled with passion that really did reignite our sparks and shared wo many valuable tips and trips that will amplify the treatments we can perform and the way we ensure optimal outcomes from our homecare prescriptions. This episode is our Art Club Diary entry – with the top 7 takeaways that we want to share with this audience in the hope that they will not only educate but also inspire a little spark in you too.
| Ep. 28: Screen-face - the era of digital ageing | 19 May 2024 | 00:27:03 | |
Gone are the days when the only light source was the sun, and people could only connect in person! These days, our lives are heavily reliant on ubiquitous technology that empowers us to connect, communicate, and process. Technology is highly relied upon for us to do business, deliver education, launch new products, connect with friends and run seminars and conferences. But what effect does this heightened exposure to artificial energy (specifically, high energy blue light) have on the human mechanism and the function of our body's largest organ, the skin. The studies are in and there is some hard evidence that links excessive exposure to impaired barrier function, DNA damage, tissue breakdown and accelerated cutaneous ageing. Today we’re diving into blue light, reviewing some of the science that links exposure to skin dysfunction, how much is too much and what are the side effects, and exploring some practical steps that can assist in managing the side effects.

| Ep. 26: Behind the Scenes of pHformula's latest Clinical Study | 28 Apr 2024 | 00:31:16 | |
So often when we look at skincare formulas, we first read the impressive claims and see the shiny marketing images. And whilst most raw ingredients that are widely formulated with come with their own scientific evidence, what becomes of a finished product containing a cocktail of ingredients? This episode of The Power of Protons will take you on a behind the scenes tour of the most recent clinical study undertaken by pHformula. With Mariona Jimenez, pHformula's Head of R & D, as your guide, you will be amazed to learn what goes on behind the scenes of a clinical study, that 1+1 doesn’t always equal 2 in formulating terms and most importantly, what the results of our Chronic Redness Study were!
| Ep. 25: Avoiding Pigment Bounce Back | 21 Apr 2024 | 00:36:25 | |
As we make our way towards the cooler months here in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s likely that your clients will be looking to reverse some of the effects of summer – specifically new pigmentation and brown spots that have been stimulated to the surface. For decades, the professional beauty, dermal and aesthetics industry have approached the treatment of pigmentation with modalities like IPL and Laser, alongside chemical peels, microneedling and possibly microdermabrasion – procedures that aim to get rid of the old, over pigmented cells and stimulate the proliferation of new fresh daughter cells that hopefully find their way back up to the surface without the same over-population of melanin as their predecessors. Unfortunately, despite best intentions, we can overlook the fact that the hyper pigmentation has often been triggered by trauma, inflammation and possibly a hormonal influence in the case of melasma for example and that rehabilitating the temperamental melanocyte takes a very careful balance so as not to overstimulate him again and cause a rebounding pigment stream that comes back with a vengeance to better protect the new cells. So how do we best avoid pigment bounce back whilst still offering the measurable and long-lasting results that our clients are seeking? Listen up – this episode will explore the process of melanogenesis, treatments that hold risk to trigger pigment bounce back and prudent measures to reduce the risks in our treatment programs.
| Ep. 24: The Journey of a Baby Skin Cell | 14 Apr 2024 | 00:20:58 | |
In today’s episode we are travelling alongside a daughter keratinocyte in her journey from the mother cells in the stratum basale layer all the way up through the epidermis to our skin’s surface, the cells we see when we look in the mirror. This journey is perfectly orchestrated, complex and dependent on several reactions taking place to ensure our skin serves up a sophisticated barrier that protects us in our environment. At the very heart of the journey is a transformation – where our living keratinocytes originating in the stratum basale, fully differentiate into their anucleate corneocyte versions, equipped with strong protein that forms part of our protective barrier. As this journey takes place, the keratinocyte travels through the strata of the epidermis, through a gradient of pH, that is, different zones of acidity and is subject to influencing factors that clock on and clock off to support the transformation of these evolving cells. This episode will highlight the stages of skin cell lifecycle, from proliferation, early differentiation, terminal differentiation, cornification and eventually, desquamation. We'll highlight a handful of skin conditions linked to a dysfunctional journey and explore some prudent measures to consider when designing a topical skin care routine that supports this key process of skin regeneration and barrier health :-)
| Ep. 23: Professionalism - here's what I learnt at Pilates this week | 07 Apr 2024 | 00:19:17 | |
I went away from what would usually be a positive way to start my morning feeling icky and thinking "how unprofessional"! And so it got me thinking about professionalism - is it a subjective metric and how can we best deliver professional services within the skin management industry so as to elevate and champion our offering, rather than speaking negatively about someone else's? On this episode, I'll be sharing what went down at my last Pilates class, how we can define 'professionalism' in business and some pointers for navigating our patient communications when we're asked questions like "what do you think about this product" or "I'm thinking to have Treatment X, what do you think". Hope you enjoy x Danielle
| Ep. 22: Perioral Dermatitis - and what treatments have worked for me recently! | 31 Mar 2024 | 00:24:35 | |
Perioral dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can cause discomfort and frustration for those who suffer it. With a plethora of known triggers, the condition can become quite complex in knowing the causal factors and the most suitable line of treatment (which as I've come to learn personally, can vary in efficacy over the years). This episode of The Power of Protons will explore the symptoms of Perioral Dermatitis, documented triggers that can lead to or exacerbate an outbreak, mainstay treatment approaches PLUS the treatment approach that worked wonders for my last flare-up in 2023. | Ep. 39: it's time to redefine 'chemical peeling' | 25 Aug 2024 | 00:19:50
It’s time we redefine the meaning of a ‘chemical peel’, afterall, technology and techniques evolve and certainly in the case of chemical peels they’ve evolved in leaps and bounds since the 90s where they became mainstream treatments. Rewind 15 years and pHformula was (already) ahead of the times in developing a new generation of acid based treatments that offered the happy benefits associated with the concept of ‘peeling’ yet removed the sad side effects that would often result. At pHformula we have always taken the untraditional approach, redefining what has always been, challenging the status quo and offering our formulas exclusively to the professional skin specialist who can work with optimised precision to achieve the most beautiful results for their clients and patients. This episode will explore the philosophy of controlled chemical skin resurfacing and how it differs from traditional chemical peeling techniques. | Ep. 21: The key to delivering unbuffered acids without irritation - with Mariona Jimenez, Head of R&D at pHformula | 24 Mar 2024 | 00:37:03
Revealing the KEY to delivering unbuffered acids into the skin without the surface irritation or downtime you might expect when formulating with free acids. Mariona Jimenez, Head of Research and Development at pHformula, is back for another episode and this time we're diving into the innovative PH-DVC™ - a unique delivery vehicle complex that rapidly penetrates ingredients beyond the outermost layers of the skin, reduces surface irritation, assists in cellular regeneration processes, supports ingredient bioavailability and provides a soothing action. The PH-DVC™ powers pHformula and today, we're sharing this truly unique complex with you. If you're curious to learn about the power of protons and the secret to delivering unbuffered acids for the most powerful (yet controlled) resurfacing result, this episode has been made for you!
| Ep. 20: There's no room for complacency - it's time to level up the value we offer our patients | 17 Mar 2024 | 00:22:37 | |
'No room for complacency' It's one of my favourite lines from pHformula's manifesto - and it could not have more relevance to our industry today, for developing solutions to emerging challenges we face as opposed to just settling for the status quo, and what used to work. In an age where complacency and familiarity with our patients can quickly lead to decreased spend, cancelled appointments and no-shows, extra time between appointments and lower rebooking rates – there has never been a better time to level up our skills and knowledge base. To invest in ourselves and the value we can transfer into our unique value proposition to our patients. On this episode of The Power of Protons, I'm excited to share some of the key themes I delivered in my opening address at the Behind the Formulation event with Mariona Jimenez in Sydney 2 weeks ago. Content I hope will inspire you to reshape and redefine your clinical value exchange. If ever there was a time to level up your professional skills and treatment techniques, your knowledge base, your communication techniques, your unique value proposition, it’s today, right now. Enjoy what I hope will be a thought-provoking episode! D
| Ep. 19: A tour of the DERMIS | 10 Mar 2024 | 00:25:22 | |
Whilst our topical skincare products absorb into and target the epidermis, there are certain ingredients and treatment approaches that either directly or indirectly influence our dermis, with the ultimate goal being to stimulate the mighty fibroblast cells to produce new collagen, elastin and glycoaminoglycans. These key proteins and polysaccharides form the extra cellular matrix, key to skin strength, density and overall function. On this episode of The Power of Protons we're touring the Dermis, with our first stop being the basement membrane or dermal-epidermal junction that links our two zones of skin. We'll then highlight the two key regions of the dermis, prominent cell types and the overall role of this deep zone of skin. In a field where the holy grail of age management procedures rely on targeting and/or influencing the dermis and activating the wound healing cascade, there has never been a better time to revisit this region of skin and explore the cells in which we seek to stimulate to tighten, firm and resurface with new epithelial tissue.
| Ep. 18: Sleep your way to better skin | 25 Feb 2024 | 00:30:45 | |
There's a good reason we call it 'beauty sleep'! The link between quality sleep and high performing skin could not be stronger. Sleep also just happens to assist our body in naturally overcoming stress and elevated cortisol levels that could be triggering an inflammatory skin condition. In this episode we’re revealing some of the compelling studies that have been published over the past decade surrounding skin health and sleep and how we can elevate the outcomes achievable from skincare prescriptions and professional skin treatments by incorporating lifestyle upgrades (that often don't cost any money at all!) We will explore important conversation points that may inform a slightly different treatment course that initially determined to best manage the conditions present and minimise adverse skin responses.
| Ep. 16 : Is stress causing your skin to misbehave? | 11 Feb 2024 | 00:28:46 | |
Stress is a well-recognised and documented contributing factor to skin conditions ranging from atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, to acne and hyperpigmentation, to premature ageing and impaired epidermal barrier. And our modern world is no short of ‘stressors’ that can surpass our innate ability to cope - many of us are living in 'fight or flight' mode. The concept of ancient body-modern world could not be more relevant. This episode will explore the importance of discussing stress levels in detail with patients prior to embarking on an advanced course of treatments and homecare and discuss the mechanisms and biological responses that take course during high-stress times and chronic stress levels. We will share valuable insights about the brain-skin axis, the pros and cons of cortisol and common skin disorders that can trigger or exacerbate with stress. | Ep. 15: Influencer-led or evidenced-based - cutting through the online noise to determine what's actually right for your skin | 04 Feb 2024 | 00:27:08
The beauty industry is rife with new trends. With new products and techniques that we can try to achieve a new style of outcome. Now, trends are not always negative – there are trends that are well researched, well-rooted in science and often innovative in their approach. But how do you know which trend is right for you and your unique skin condition? From skin streaming to skin flooding, slugging to DIY peels and needling, ‘get ready with me’ snippets into the daily skincare routine of celebrities and influencers to achieving glass skin from product a, b and c – there’s no shortage of content designed to compel you to take control of your skin and try something new. What this content doesn’t often share is the risk associated with applying an unsuitable treatment, product or ingredient that isn't targeted to assist in managing your unique skin condition or what can go wrong if it's used incorrectly. When it comes to the skin, the body’s largest organ – why are so many taking the gamble? This episode explores the booming world of influencer-led beauty tips and tricks style ‘education’ versus evidence-based, scientifically sound treatments and guidance offered by qualified professionals who have spent years, even decades, perfecting the art of managing skin and offering well thought out treatment programs that minimise the risk of side effects and reactions – not to mention, potentially irreparable damage. It's time to opt-in to carefully selected ingredients within carefully calibrated formulations alongside science-backed modalities administered by professionals, over the mass-marketed, unspecific products, advice and treatment trends that we see popping in our feed. | Ep. 14 : Collaborative Intelligence and Building a Professional Referral Network | 28 Jan 2024 | 00:25:30
It’s what you know, it’s who you know, and it’s knowing what you don’t know. On this episode of The Power of Protons we’re exploring the power of collaboration, why you need collaborative intelligence when it comes to working with the ‘right’ people to elevate the outcomes achievable for your clients/patients, and how to build a referral network across multiple disciplines from dermatology to surgery to nutrition and other allied health practices. In 2023, every conference program seemed to focus on collaboration, and I feel this year, in 2024, it will be no different. Collaboration is key – but it can also go incredibly wrong with the potential to cause damage to your credibility and reputation if expectations, visions and structure are unclear or mis-aligned. This episode will explore the good and the bad and equip you with some practical steps for establishing a strong and aligned referral network build on trust and shared leadership. | Ep. 38: the P word | 11 Aug 2024 | 00:14:12
It’s time we get a firmer understanding of the bait before we click or act. The P-word is thrown around a lot in our industry – and it’s certainly used as a form of bait to sell everything from coaching courses to seminars, equipment to product. It’s also used frequently in our industry as a metric of success – the more profit, the healthier your business is. But it's not accounting profits that actually determine the true health and wealth (or sustainability) of your business! Today we’re exploring the world of profit, the types of profit that we can analyse and why profit is actually NOT as important as CASHFLOWS – money in, money out, and the timing of these cashflows. | Ep. 10: Skin cancer - what role can skin therapists play in early detection and prevention? | 31 Dec 2023 | 00:33:43
Dubbed the 'national cancer' in Australia (and New Zealand), at least 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime :-( Sadly, despite a record high volume of accessible education surrounding the importance of safe sun practice, the application of skin protection products and regular skin checks, incidences continue to increase as does the impact on the health system. Whilst treatment avenues have improved over time, skin cancer is serious and life threatening and according to the available reports, data and published peer review articles, can largely be prevented. This episode will explore the three most commonly diagnosed forms of skin cancer, symptoms to be aware of and the treatment avenues available. It will explore the evolving role of a beauty therapist, dermal therapist or dermal clinician in playing a far more active part in the early detection of what could be a life-threatening growth - after all, we will likely see our clients/patients much more frequently than their dermatologist. As we fast approach the Australian and New Zealand high summer, the time for revisiting this important topic could not be more relevant - enjoy! | Ep. 9: Dive into the EPIDERMIS | 24 Dec 2023 | 00:26:28
The EPIDERMIS is arguably the most important region of the skin for skin specialists – it’s what we target on a daily basis in our clinics. It’s what we apply topical formulas to and aim to stimulate to promote a healthy renewal of cells to the surface so that our skin looks fresh and ‘aesthetically’ pleasing. This episode will explore the key zones of the epidermis, from the deepest basale region to the outermost corneum. This tour explores the impressive transformation that our primary skin cells undergo on their way up to the surface and highlights the support crew responsible for ensuring that our skin maintains its ability to serve us optimally as an evolved organ of protection. | Ep. 8 : Is Informed Consent the Backbone of your Skin Treatments? | 17 Dec 2023 | 00:32:20
The worldwide non-invasive aesthetic treatment market was valued at US$61.2 billion in 2022, with a predicted compounding annual growth rate of 15.4% until 2030 (Grand Review Research). It’s no surprise then that there is an incredibly high demand for procedures that refresh, rejuvenate, recontour, reshape and ultimately reveal a more youthful appearance; in fact, skin rejuvenation treatments rank #2 among the fastest growing categories. With the evolution of skin rejuvenation treatments over the past decade, and the recent updates to regulations for the non-surgical market, as published by AHPRA, the time for taking consultation seriously couldn’t be more relevant. We’ll explore why this element of a treatment is the key to safe practice and clinic-business longevity as the industry continues to evolve in a fast paced, instant gratification culture, where scope may blur due to undefined parameters being in place. This podcast has been made possible with the support of pHformula Australia, the Australian and New Zealand distributor of pHformula, dermatological skin resurfacing. www.phformula.com.au

| Ep. 6 : Keratinocyte X Melanocyte - happy marriage or problems with communication? | 03 Dec 2023 | 00:32:10 | |
When we aim to treat pigment irregularities in the skin, we need to consider the relationship between the two most involved cells – the melanocyte (the cell producing the pigment) and the keratinocyte (the cell receiving the pigment). This relationship is fiercely debated, with a number of theories proposed dating back to the 1960s as to how this transfer of pigment actually takes place. However, one thing we do know is that these two cell types are married, in a relationship known as the epidermal-melanin unit, and this marriage requires a commitment to communication to ensure an overall happy, functional and good looking skin. This episode will explore some of the intricacies involved in maintaining a happy marriage between the keratinocyte and melanocyte, the importance of cell to cell and cytokine/enzyme to cell communication, as well as factors that can cause pigment misfire and dysfunctional melanin production. | Ep. 4: Cytokines - the ultimate conductors of your skin's health and appearance | 19 Nov 2023 | 00:24:04
Talking about the skin, cytokines are the ultimate conductors that we, as skin specialists, rely on during our advanced treatments and to achieve remarkable long-term results for our patients. They also just happen to be the culprits in many skin conditions that we seek to treat - from acne to hyperpigmentation, atopic dermatitis to rosacea, barrier impairment and ageing. For every action, whether environmental, intrinsic or topically applied, there is a cytokine reaction - and maintaining a level of balance amongst our cytokine population and the messages being transferred and communicated between skin cells is absolute KEY to consider when developing safe and effective treatment programs. | Ep. 3: Acids in skincare - looking beyond the % to determine the true strength and efficacy of a product | 12 Nov 2023 | 00:23:46
In the next episode of "The Power of Protons," we're diving deep into the world of acids – most specifically, how to calculate the TRUE strength of a skin care product or treatment that contains AHAs and BHAs! Forget concentration alone, or even the overall pH of the solution; it's time to decode the often-overlooked pKa values of the acids in the formula and their ability to release protons. We're demystifying the chemistry behind pH, pKa, and proton mobility, revealing how these factors shape the efficacy of your favorite skincare products and 'peeling' solutions and exploring what the process of 'buffering' does to the acids to unveil the most modern approach to controlled skin resurfacing. This episode will reshape your view towards working with acids on the skin and equip you with important resources that you probably didn't learn at college!

| Ep. 1: From Knowledge to Credibility - the leadership journey as a skin specialist | 26 Oct 2023 | 00:15:30 | |
In 1963 John F Kennedy presented the phrase, “A rising tide lifts all boats”, and this is a phrase that perfectly encapsulates the importance of leading the way with education to elevate our ever-evolving skin, dermal and aesthetics industry and establish a new consumer expectation of professionalism for our clinical treatments and product recommendations. This debut episode will provide a baseline for paying forward our commitment to education into our circle of influence, not only so that they too can benefit from our self-development, but that we leverage our credibility to become outstanding leaders in the skin management field.
| Ep. 37: N.I.C.E the sisterly trinity of skin | 04 Aug 2024 | 00:15:16 | |
Historically the skin has been treated in silo – it’s been beautified topically and managed for the symptoms that present at various stages of our lives. It's been regarded as no more than a barrier for our body and the important organs it houses, like our brain our heart and our lungs. Over the last couple of decades, the available research showcasing the skin as more than just a barrier has become overwhelming. The skin is an organ with neuro aspects, endocrine aspects and immune aspects – creating a trinity of sister systems that orchestrate its performance, its appearance and its ability to respond. And the magic is that this sisterly relationship is bidirectional – the skin provides feedback to its sisters at various stages with the ultimate goal being to maintain its dynamic state of balance, homeostasis. In episode 37 today we’re diving into skin science and exploring these relationships and how when we speak to the skin, we’re also speaking to the immune system, the nervous system and the endocrine system.

If you’re working within the professional beauty, dermal, aesthetic medicine or allied health sector, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you would know Chiza Westcarr. Chiza is a dynamic beauty therapist, dermal clinician, clinical nutritionist and is now embarking on a PhD that I know will reveal groundbreaking finding finds around the role of nutrition and exercise on cardiometabolic health in menopausal women. She is a wealth of knowledge and a born educator - and today is revealing everything you need to know to kick start your understanding of the role menopause plays in skin health. In Chiza’s words, “an ageing [female] skin is a menopausal skin”. In this thought-provoking podcast Chiza shares her passion for skin and nutrition with an added lens that highlights the significant impact that estrogen has on the skin and therefore the impact that peri-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal life phases has on the appearance and function of our body's largest organ, the skin. Beyond the skin symptoms associated with menopausal skin, we will discuss the fine line surrounding treatments that aim to stimulate new cells and new proteins in the hope that the skin will bounce back looking tighter and firmer versus what becomes a declining ability to naturally and optimally respond to such procedures as we age. I know you will love this discussion, that it will spark your curiosity, as it did for me, to learn more and to upgrade the education you can pay forward to your clients and patients who may be battling with the symptoms associated with this life phase.
