Exactly What to Do - Inspiration with Ross "Memphis" Pambrun
24 sept. 2025
00:48:26
Spend ten seconds listening to this guy — and you’re gonna want to rip the doors off the place to change the world.
I met Ross “Memphis” Pambrun on a gig last month. It’s impossible not to get caught up in his energy, passion and sense of motivation.
The biggest challenge with bringing so much energy to the table?
Understanding how YOU can replicate it and apply it to your work and life.
Ross outlines all of that in this edition of Exactly What to Do.
Exactly What to Do - Storytelling with Brad Cochhrane
19 sept. 2025
00:45:40
“It’s easy to find me…I’m the guy walking around with a bicycle under his arm.”
If you are late to meet a storyteller, THAT is the text you want to receive.
Earlier this year, I was on the floor of the Northwest Event Show in Seattle, and I was trying to find Brad Cochrane.
Brad has something I wanted — a foolproof process to improve my storytelling ability. I run workshops on this stuff, and I’m always trying to find a competitive edge.
He’s got that edge.
He calls it the Story Wheel. It’s a cross section of all the best storytelling skillsets you’ve ever heard of, and he just shared it on The Playbook.
Oh — and he was serious. He was indeed walking around with a real, ridable bicycle tucked under his arm. He tells THAT story on the show too.
Exactly What to Do – E.J. Corporan on Networking
17 sept. 2025
00:45:57
Here’s something that’s kinda awful to admit.
I once dropped out of journalism school because I was terrified of networking.
During a radio production class, I had to go out onto the street and do interviews with passers by.
It was terrifying, and I vowed not to do that anymore.
I have a feeling my experience would have been different if I’d run into E.J. Corporan.
This guy makes Networking seem like breathing. Moments after I met him at MPI’s WEC, he was acting like we’d known each other for years.
I knew I neeeeeeeded him to talk about his secrets on the radio show.
So this week - Exactly What to Do tells you how to be like E.J. and win with networking.
And you don’t even have to drop out of journalism school to get it done.
Exactly What to Do - Rachelle Stone on Transitions
17 sept. 2025
00:46:44
This is the most uncomfortable you’ll ever be.
I’m talking about “transition” — the time between things.
I know. I’ve been moving through a few of those transitions over the past couple of years.
Whether it’s relationships, jobs, gigs or life stages — “transitions” run wild on your mental and physical health.
Luckily, Rachelle Stone is on the case.
She kicks off an all new Season 10 of the Playbook today at 3pm on Sauga 960 — and she’s got loads of great ideas on how to manage your own next transition. Rachelle’s a great coach, speaker and friend, and she’s here to help.
We’ve got a full season of “Exactly What to Do” episodes waiting for you this year on The Playbook. From networking to storytelling, you’ll learn the skills you need to compete and thrive in your professional career.
You'd be amazed by how you think differently, feel differently and act differently when you peel away the layers and ask that one question.
What's ACTUALLY going on?
Your awareness is most of the battle when it comes to work and life. Understanding what's beneath the superficial surface helps you navigate emotion, expectations, understanding, challenges and escalations.
This episode right here is designed to turn you into the Jason Bourne of awareness.
Segment 01 – Key rules.
Stoooooop with the judgment already. Instead, be truly curious and accept the insights.
Segment 02 – Be "self" aware.
Get ready to develop a Life List that includes values, what makes you feel better, and what triggers you to feel worse. Then, measure against that baseline.
Segment 03 – Be aware of others.
If you knew that someone was having a really, really difficult time, you'd be more empathetic and compassionate, right? Well...here's how you use that curiosity to understand what's going on around you.
Segment 04 – Be "situationally" aware.
Read the room. Here's how to look for everything from power dynamics to social cues.
Exactly What to Do - How to get motivated*
19 mars 2025
00:48:00
Motivation is a scam (how's that for a clickbait headline?).
If you've ever seen something that makes you feel like you can take on the world, only to watch it fizzle out an hour later...this is the show for you.
Things are tough out there right now, and it can be nearly impossible to keep your head up and move forward with confidence. Here's my Playbook for doing exactly that.
Segment 01 - Make the commitment.
What is motivation? How to create a purpose. How to establish an environment for yourself.
Segment 02 - Build discipline and habit.
"Don't rely on 'motivation' for anything. It's fleeting and unreliable. Discipline, however, is unyielding.'" How to establish Process/System/Habit. Why you should read Atomic Habits.
Segment 03 - Get moving.
The importance of visibility. How to make micro actions. The value of ritual. How to get soft accountability working for you.
Segment 04 - Bonus secrets.
Rest. Setbacks. And what the heck is D.O.S.E.?
Exactly What to Do - How to pitch more effectively
02 mars 2025
00:46:20
Pitching is about people.
Yes, yes, you've got a great product...and service...and value proposition.
But f you try to bring it to the people by telling everyone how great you are...you're not pitching. You're gambling.
Don't gamble. Looking to land a job, a client, a second date? Remember these four things...
Segment 01 – Remember that it's not a "moment."
You win most pitches when you understand that it's the exclamation point to a sentence, not the entire sentence. Build likability, trust and rapport FIRST.
Segment 02 – Understand how your audience "buys" and "rejects."
Your pitch isn't about you and your awesome product/service/idea. It's about your audience, and if you don't know them well enough...you won't win often enough.
Segment 03 – Frame your story to trigger your buyer.
What is your pitch about? Careful. Pick the wrong thing, and you can lose. Pick too many things, and you can lose. Much of your sale will come right here,
Segment 04 – Stop making these mistakes.
You're pitching to a real live person – and if you're not thinking about this stuff, you're creating a recipe for disaster.
Exactly What to Do - How to win in your first 100 days
19 févr. 2025
00:46:05
You got the job. Congratulations?
Now what?
Do you get out there and start making waves in your new gig, or sit back and take it in?
What you need...is a plan, and this week's episode gives you the exact plan you need to succeed in any new engagement...
Segment 01 – Get off of autopilot.
Win with four specific, and helpful skills.
Segment 02 – Your 4-step plan.
Listen. Win. Recommend. Execute.
Segment 03 – Network Better.
Make an Influence Map. Learn about great coffee. Go to all that social stuff you hate.
Segment 04 – Be known for something.
How are you MIRV? What can you recommend? What's your internal "cause?" Are you a "connector?"
Exactly What to Do - How to ace your job interview
08 févr. 2025
00:49:53
Job interviews are harder than they should be.
And a big reason for that is that we don't step back and think about what it takes to succeed with a job interview. Instead...we hyper focus on individual questions, and try to think about what they mean.
There is a better way, one that starts with not getting into the cattle call challenge for a job interview...and instead, building relationships beforehand. TO learn more about that, check out Episode 125, "How to look for a job."
What can you do to ace a job interview? Try these...
Segment 01 – Build a "personally moving" business case.
You aren't a person applying for a job. You are a brand making a connection. Here's how to do that by driving outcomes for the business and influencing the individual.
Segment 02 - Deliver smarter answers.
To deliver a better answer, look to media and presentation training. It's about what triggers you'r audience, understanding what they're really asking and delivering a MIRV answer.
Segment 03 - Try four secrets.
How well are you using gathering time, asking questions, being genuinely curious and following up? These can set you apart.
Segment 04 - Think of it as a performance.
Bring your best self to the table and learn how to project confidence and break into the brain of the interviewer.
Exactly What to Do – How to apply for a job (this one's about resumes)
29 janv. 2025
00:48:01
Resumes suck.
Not ALL of them, but way, way too many of them.
As someone who has worked as a professional CV writer in the past, I have a hunch as to why:
We don't actually THINK about our resume. We just sort of follow a template of telling people about us.
But here's the thing – many people don't care about us. They care about what we can do for them. And to that end, your resume isn't your story.
It's your print ad.
The "job" of a resume is to move a sales cycle forward, and get you an interview.
That's it.
And that's why you might want to re-think how you put that one pager together. On today's episode, I share The Playbook that once got a non-hockey executive interviews with actual NHL teams. Listen up...and make your resume (+ online presence) stand out.
Segment 01 – Get off of autopilot. Do the same thing, get the same result – and in this case, that's not a good thing.
Segment 02 – Write a better resume. Introducing the "matrix" approach to publishing your story.
Segment 03 – Write a better resume (continued). An idea so big, it's going to take two segments to cover it all.
Segment 04 – Little things. Cover letters. Humanity. And the importance of "asking for the business."
Exactly What to Do – How to look for a job
22 janv. 2025
00:46:20
“Exactly what to do.”
I’ve noticed a problem with too much of LinkedIn’s content. It tends to sit in the broader “strategic” layer of thinking. We give advice like “Go out there and network” and “Take care of your mental health.”
But the devil’s in the details. What do you actually do to network (stand where people hang out) and take care of your mental health (do 2-minute instant mindfulness exercises throughout the day)?
That’s the focus of my all-new Season of The Playbook. This time around, we’re describing Exactly What to Do (EWTODO).
This week – How to Look for a Job. I’m getting into the nuts and bolts of resumes and the like in future episodes. This one is simply the little things you need to do to find that dream gig, and it’s going to take a bit of legwork to get you there.
Segment 01 – Get off of autopilot Do the same things, get the same results. Here's a better way to look for a job.
Segment 02 – Think like a business What's your brand plan? Do what businesses do, even if you're an employee.
Segment 03 – Build an epic network Sure. You know you need a network. But do you know what you're doing?
Segment 04 – Create a presence A resume and a cover letter don't cut it these days. You need do be something...more.
Exactly What To Do - Presentations
08 janv. 2025
00:49:34
Everything you need to know about presentations in 46 minutes.
When The Playbook first began, the goal was to get past the “strategic layer” of thinking, and down to the very specific things you can do to succeed.
That’s what this BRAND NEW SEASON is all about. I’m calling it “Exactly What To Do.” Every week, I’m tackling one real world topic – How to get a job, How to build a brand, How to network – and telling you the specific things you should be doing to be successful.
This week – presentation skills (obvi). Starting Monday, I’m running the SUGR Instant Course with new content every day. The show’s live on Sauga 960 AM today at 3 – and available now to stream on your favourite platform, or from the speakupgetresults.com website. Come hang out. It’s like getting a killer keynote on what it takes to present.
Gamechangers – Life Surfer – Joleigh Sherwood
18 déc. 2024
00:45:24
There’s this great idea that just about anything can be transformed from a challenge into a gift and opportunity.
For Joleigh Sherwood, it’s not just an idea…it’s a way to attack and create every day.
It’s how she overcame tragedy. It’s how she started her own national Nanny-matching business, and it’s her ceaseless piece of advice for just about everyone.
On this week’s show, Joleigh gives the step-by-step to a life that’s jam packed with possibility.
Segment 01 — Brother’s Passing
Joleigh’s brother passed away too early — and she transformed the tragedy into a catalyst for success in her own life. If you’ve faced the trauma of a loved one’s passing, this is a powerful listen.
Segment 02 — Landmark Communications
Joleigh is a big fan of how the “Landmark” organization teaches and shares intentional communications. Lots of chat about commitment, listening, layers and understanding.
Segment 03 — “There is no such thing as common sense…”
Joleigh’s favourite professor hit her with this quote as a way to remind her that so much in life is learned and absorbed — it’s not innate. “People do things differently — we are in the world because of the way we were brought up.”
Segment 04 — Surfing
Sure, living in California has a lot of perks — but the ability to hit the beach at any given moment and meld with the water is Joleigh's perfect everyday opportunity.
But it should probably read, “I give great advice to anyone in transition.”
A couple of years back, Leanne decided to make some changes in her life, including taking the leap into a brand new business (for those of you in events, her colleagues call her “The Reg Queen.”).
If you’re starting your career, changing jobs or moving through any major transition in life…you want to listen to Leanne on The Playbook this week. She’s got some great advice for how to find the courage to take the leap — plus the one thing that you should do to your LinkedIn profile RIGHT NOW.
Segment 01 — Why Not Me, Why Not Now?
The one question Leanne asked herself to get out there and start a business — and why you should do it too.
Segment 02 — Change Your LinkedIn Headline to the Simplest Thing You Do
Leanne changed her LinkedIn profile headline on a whim — and then things got SERIOUSLY interesting.
Segment 03 — Permission Granted
Sometimes we all need the nudge of a little external validation to take the leap.
Segment 04 — Decide on Who You Want to Be
“I can’t keep milk in the house…” How being the worst at grocery shopping became a moment of empowerment.
Gamechangers – Boundary Setter – Jen Febel
10 déc. 2024
00:46:08
My pal Jen Febel just published a new book — it’s called: “How to set boundaries (without feeling like a dick).”
Awesome topic, great twist.
Jen joins The Playbook recently for one of the best conversations ever. Here’s what you’ll learn to apply to your own career:
Segment 01 — My Coach
“Coaching” is “how.” “Therapy” is “why.” Jen describes what a good coach can bring to your life.
Segment 02 — My Choir
Belonging to “something” is something we all know is important and gratifying — but here’s how you can connect with people to change your life.
Segment 03 — My (NewNewNew Book)
Jen says a boundary isn’t the inflexible wall you think it is — and talks about how you can set, reset and understand boundaries for everyone’s benefit. Then I derail her, and we start talking about all sorts of stuff.
Segment 04 — My Husband
What is a partnership for? How do you connect? What can you give one another for a better life.
Gamechangers – Superstars Debbie Garcia and Nelia Nunes

00:46:29

Marc Stevenson has the answer to that question — and more than a few stories about the world’s best musicians. This week, he shares his four Gamechangers to help you level up you career and take on the world.
Segment 01 — Expectations This one’s a bit of a jaw dropper — Marc and his family are expecting a big inheritance. The plot twist fuels an extraordinary career.
Segment 02 — Beyoncé Yes, there is a real Beyoncé story in this story, but it’s how Marc put himself in the position to hang with her that’s important.

If you know the name Cynthia Richards, you know this is going to an Oprah-level episode (seriously, she gives me so many glow ups, it's nutty).
Cynthia is a powerhouse of inspiration, who co-founded the events agency Event Spectrum (Hi Zora!). Here, she shows how some of the indelible ideas of connection are STILL essential in our media drenched universe. LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE!
Segment 01 - Likeability Are you truly, honestly likeable? Why? How? Be conscious of this simple idea, and everything changes.
Segment 02 - See People. Give to People. This is really nine different ideas in one. We start with "remembering someone's name" and end with how you help the world around you.
Segment 03 - Values What are your values and how do you live them? Now...look at your values again and push a little bit. Get beyond the obvious ones (honesty, integrity, accountability), and find out the most important part of you.

To kick the season off, you get me talking about my Big 4…
