Season 2, Episode 11: Lee D. Stockner--Educator/Author/Creator of a New Language of Music09 Mar 202201:03:35

Mr. Stockner is the author of Occupational Octaves Piano™, a series of piano method books, which hundreds of music instructors across the nation have used to teach piano lessons to special needs in the past decade. He is also the creator of the new and user-friendly language of music/ featured in Occupational Octaves™, which was invented for anyone with basic color and letter matching skills. Using this language allows students, including those with high support needs, can play challenging music such as Fur Elise or exercises like 4-oct scales in parallel.

We covered topics including Mr. Stockner’s experiences of teaching special-needs students, the creation of a New Language of music, the science behind optimal flow experiences at the piano, Mr. Stockner’s entrepreneurial journey.

[Lee D. Stockner]

Lee D. Stockner is the creator of Occupational Octaves™, which features the most user-friendly language of music available. He is a classical pianist, self-made entrepreneur, music educator, special educator, inventor, publisher, instructor trainer, author, and more.

Having been diagnosed with attention deficit while also a classical pianist made for an interesting pathway, which led Lee to write and publish the original 8-book Occupational Octaves Piano™ curriculum (through his music publishing company, Music Lee Inclined Guy, Inc.). Having first begun developing the method at age 25, his original purpose was to print, teach, and empower other teachers with the same type of curriculum he used as a 10-year classical piano teacher however, this would be in an entirely new language based on letters and colors. These initial goals have been successful beyond initial imagination. Since then, Occupational Octaves™ has been part of several progressions:

2016 –Newsday: Occupational Octaves presents a recital by special needs kids & Fox 5 NY airs "Playing piano brings focus and joy to Long Island man with autism"

2017 – Launches Occupational Octaves™ in the Cloud on UnitusTI, to bring Occupational Octaves directly into multiple therapeutic and educational environments (press release)

2018 – Public Speaking Event - Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine hosts “Autism and Music.” Student Performance & Panel Discussion

2019 – “Occupational Octaves” the documentary, is released and nominated for an award at the 2020 Pasadena International Film Festival.

2020 - Manhattan Children's Conference Presenter - Transitions for Young People with Autism

2021 – Music Lee Inclined Guy, Inc. publishes “The Stockner Method,” to teach the fundamentals of traditional music notation to people with and without experience using Occupationa

The Piano Pod, Season 1, Episode 15: James Redcay, MidAmerica Productions at Carnegie Hall09 Jun 202100:55:13

TPP had the privilege of interviewing James Redcay: Senior Executive Overseeing Operations and Sales at MidAmerica Productions (https://www.midamerica-music.com/), the most prolific presenter of choral concerts in the history of Carnegie Hall.  James explained to us how a six-year diversion in Macau, China 🇲🇴 where he created and managed entertainment programs for the world's largest casino company - helped to shift his career path from the traditional one of a composer and classical pianist to a choir booking manager working closely with the famous venue 🎭.  Join us to hear his fun anecdotes from backstage, as well as learn how his company dealt with the sudden cancellation of all concerts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

[James Redcay, composer/pianist/manager]

A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, James Redcay spent four years in New York City as an accomplished pianist, composer and teacher, performing and composing for numerous concerts and institutions. During this time Redcay also held the position of Composer-in-Residence at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. After graduating from NYU, Redcay moved abroad to Macao, where he taught music at the Conservatory of Macao and created and managed arts and entertainment programs for Sands China Ltd., a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands. Season 4 Episode 12: Tim Topham - Founder and Director of Top Music Co and Author of "No Book Beginners"21 Feb 202401:20:51

We had an inspiring conversation with 🇦🇺Tim Topham, Founder & Director of TopMusicCo, Music Educator, & Author! Our discussion revolved around his recently released book, "No Book Beginners: A Step-by-Step Framework for Creative Piano Teaching, Starting from Lesson One."

This book encapsulates his experiences as a music educator and piano instructor, drawing from extensive research spanning from Kodaly to Music Learning Theory. It serves as a valuable resource, delving into various aspects such as the inspiration behind its creation, the current landscape of music education with a particular emphasis on piano instruction, and providing a historical context to elucidate the evolution of teaching methods in the industry.

The book critiques the prevalent note-reading-centric approach in piano instruction, advocating instead for a more holistic teaching method. Additionally, it offers a practical framework for instructing beginner piano students, emphasizing an approach that doesn't rely on any specific method books for the initial 10 weeks. Check out Tim’s book, No Book Beginners HERE.

We also explored the digital empire that he built to support fellow music educators, offering a wealth of resources including blogs, vlogs, courses, and a membership community. These resources aim to empower teachers, enabling them to evolve into 21st-century educators within their respective communities.

Tim shared valuable insights on the requisites for being a 21st-century music business owner, the challenges among teachers, and the prevailing trends in piano teaching.

Welcome to the fun and inspiring conversation with Miki Sawada, the talented Pianist & CEO of Gather Hear Inc., for The Piano Pod’s Season 4 Episode 11!

Since the inception of our show, we've shone a spotlight on pianists who astonish us with their creativity. 😎 Yet, Miki's journey is truly unparalleled. Dive into the details:

Launched in 2017, inspired by the divisive atmosphere of the 2016 🇺🇸 Presidential Election, Gather Hear Tour is Miki's labor of love. Eschewing conventional venues, she embarks on tours across rural America, bringing high-quality, inclusive classical music performances to communities often overlooked.

From the spiritual landscapes of Utah to the rural stretches of Alabama, and from quaint local cafes to segregated schools and prisons, Miki's journey in her Uhaul van, with her piano in tow, is a mission to deliver the beauty of live music directly to the people. Her approach fosters genuine connections, celebrating the spirit of American life through the universal language of music.

What began as a musical odyssey has evolved into a profound journalistic endeavor. Miki documents her experiences, offering an intimate glimpse into the American heartland through candid video recordings.
