| What You Leave Behind | 26 Dec 2019 | 01:34:33 | |
This is it. The final episode of DS9. "What You Leave Behind" serves to close out both the Dominion War and the series itself. It has action, drama, comedy and retrospection in spades. It's a brilliant ending to a fascinating series. But it's not perfect. In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss what the finale does right and what it does wrong. They try to determine if "What you Leave Behind" is a fitting end to the series they've been watching for almost two and a half years. Thanks to everyone for listening and supporting the show. Thank you for not leaving us behind! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! Thanks for listening. | Penumbra | 25 Nov 2019 | 00:49:07
DS9 has entered "The Final Chapter"! In 'Penumbra', Sisko and Kasidy announce their plans to marry, and Ezri tries to rescue Worf. The "Final Chapter" is the series ending run of nine episodes that finish out DS9. in this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the problems with DS9's serialized storytelling, when characters get "too real", and the series treading water to get to this point! | Indiscretion – Ft. Clay & Andrew | 10 Sep 2018 | 00:54:42
Kira and Dukat go on a journey to find the wreckage of a lost Cardassian freighter. Meanwhile, Sisko weighs the pros and cons of having his girlfriend move onto the station. Dukat is already one of the more interesting DS9 characters, and Indiscretion places him at the forefront of a tough moral decision - will he murder his child to save his career? Plus, Quark gets to insult women and Dax and Bashir share a very fine joke. Clay and Andrew join me to discuss moving in together, the Garak and Dukat schism, and saving an episode with no time to spare! Are you looking for older episodes? | Hippocratic Oath – Ft. Clay | 06 Sep 2018 | 00:45:00
Shades of Gray, the DS9 episode! In "Hippocratic Oath", Bashir learns about the moral complexities of warfare, Worf learns about the moral complexities of the station, and we learn about the moral complexities of Sisko explaining moral complexities. We also learn quite a bit about the Jem'Hadar and the inner workings of the Dominion contingencies. I guess it's worth repeating: this isn't your grandfathers TNG anymore! Clay and I discuss forgetting about the Vorta, Bashir pulling rank, and Worf being the new guy in town! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | The Visitor – Ft. Clay | 03 Sep 2018 | 00:54:19
When an accident aboard the Defiant apparently kills Captain Sisko, Jake is left alone to pick up the pieces of his life. However, his father might not be dead after all, and the truth might haunt Jake for the rest of his life. TV Guide once named The Visitor the "best" episode of Star Trek ever produced. It's a heartbreaking story about the love between father and son, with tremendous performances, strong writing, and an emotional center that the franchise rarely portrays so powerfully. But does it hold up? Or is it shackled by a story structure that limits the impact of the narrative? Clay joins me to discuss old age make-up, swapping the grief, and Captain Nog! | The Way of the Warrior – Ft. Clay | 30 Aug 2018 | 01:26:02
In a feature-length season premiere, the Klingons enter the fray when they suspect a Changeling infiltration of the Cardassian government. Sisko needs help in dealing with those feisty Klingons, and who knows a Klingon better than another Klingon? Worf joins the show in "The Way of the Warrior" and immediately starts to kick some ass and pose for some kung fu pictures! DS9 is "rebooting" yet again, and Clay and Wes have a lot of thoughts about it. Join them as they discuss the upside of Worf, the downside of Spotify, and the pleasant equilibrium of Sisko's shaved head. Are you looking for older episodes? | DS9 Season Three Wrap Up | 27 Aug 2018 | 00:33:53
Another season of DS9 is in the can, and that means it's time for Wes to ramble about what went right and what went wrong. This time, he's discussing the third season of DS9. A transitional season of the show, season three had some tremendous highs but also an extended low. Was it an improvement over season two, and what could be done to improve things going forward? Before we move on to Way of the Warrior, let's break down an interesting season of DS9 and try to catch our breath before we move onward. We also give out some awards and discuss the 5 best episodes and the 5 worst episodes of this past year! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | The Adversary – Ft. Clay | 23 Aug 2018 | 01:07:12
John Carpenter meets Star Trek when a single Changeling boards the USS Defiant and tries to kickstart a war between the Federation and... some aliens we've never heard about before! Paranoia is the name of the game, and The Adversary does a good job at wrapping up season three while examining how effective the Changelings can be. It might not be the ambitious two-parter that was originally planned, but sometimes it's nice to end the year with a smaller story that fleshes out Odo, provides some insight into Eddington, and sees Sisko finally attain the rank of captain. Clay joins me to discuss the size of the Defiant, the unusual nature of travel in DS9, and what happens when one Changeling harms another! Are you looking for older episodes? | Facets – Ft. Clay | 20 Aug 2018 | 00:45:43
It's actor play-time when a Trill ceremony requires the crew to become joined with previous hosts of the Dax symbiote. We meet most of the previous hosts, and Odo gets very familiar with Curzon. Plus, DS9 has its #MeToo moment! There's also a subplot about Nog taking a test. Clay joins me to discuss the TNG episode "An Alien Psychopath Runs Riot on DS9", 10 minutes of greatness, and the Curzon we expected! Are you looking for older episodes? | Shakaar – Ft. Clay | 16 Aug 2018 | 01:02:10
Some Bajorans are not sharing their farming equipment, so Kira is sent down to negotiate a solution. She ends up meeting her old friend "Shakaar" and things get topsy-turvy when Kai Winn decides to burn the whole place down. Bajor returns to the podcast with a western-style adventure that has Kira filling the Bariel sized hole in her heart with a Shakaar shaped peg. Also, O'Brien plays darts. And his arm falls off! Clay joins me to discuss the return of the Sub Rosa candle ghost, the thematic possibilities of darts, and the ineptitude of Kai Winn! Are you looking for older episodes? | Family Business | 13 Aug 2018 | 00:25:45
Quark heads home when he learns that his mother has been charged with making a profit, and Sisko dips his toe into the 24th-century dating scene. It's yet another Ferengi themed episode, so you might come into this one with prejudice. Wes certainly has a hard time avoiding that problem, but join him as he gives his thoughts about the Ferengi as a culture and as the leads of an episode! Also discussed: Jeffrey Combs as Brunt, the growth of Quark, and deciding if a date is bad or not! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Explorers – Ft. Clay | 09 Aug 2018 | 00:58:37
Sisko and Jake build an ancient Bajoran spacecraft in order to prove that the Bajorans visited Cardassia 800 years ago, and Bashir begins to doubt himself when an old medical school rival appears on DS9. After the intensity of The Die is Cast, the show settles down with a small character piece. While it might be lacking in conflict, it makes up for it with some good old-fashioned character development. Plus, CGI spaceships! We're living in the future now. Clay joins me to discuss Rene Echevarria as Bashir, the upside to no conflict, and Cardassian fireworks! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges | 21 Nov 2019 | 01:19:56
In "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges", Section 31 recruits Dr. Bashir to aid them in making sure that the Romulan Star Empire remains on the righteous" side of the Dominion War. Special guest Darren joins Wes and Clay to discuss the final "regular" episode of Star Trek: DS9. Plus! The three discuss pushing Star Trek to its moral limits, making a fashion statement with leather, and beaming out in the nick of time! Are you looking for older episodes? | The Die is Cast – Ft. Clay & Darren | 06 Aug 2018 | 01:26:56
The Cardassian-Romulan fleet attacks the Founders homeworld, and Garak is forced to torture Odo for information. In wrapping up the story of "Improbable Cause", DS9 re-boots its central premise by kicking the Dominion conflict into high gear, As Starfleet watches from the sidelines, the Cardassian-Romulan fleet is obliterated by the Jem'Hadar. The Obsidian Order and the Tal Shiar took a tremendous gamble, and now that "The Die is Cast" we'll have to see how our heroes pick up the pieces. Clay and Darren join me to discuss the problem with the "epic", the problem with pacifism, and the problem with not writing an episode where Odo pulls a "Quantum Leap"! | Improbable Cause – Ft. Clay & Darren | 02 Aug 2018 | 01:03:14
In "Improbable Cause", Odo tries to find the truth behind a bombing at Garak's tailor shop. However, the ever-vigilant detective instead finds himself digging up a plan that could alter the balance of power in the Alpha Quadrant! Romulans working with Cardassians? Obsidian Order assassinations? Perfume bombs? A wonderful piece of character work for both Odo and Garak, "Improbable Cause" is the start of a new direction for the series. Darren and Clay join me to discuss Odo and Garak as frenemies, meeting up in caves, and the clash of cultures in the Alpha Quadrant! Are you looking for older episodes? | Through the Looking Glass – Ft. Clay | 30 Jul 2018 | 00:54:36
DS9 returns to the Mirror Universe! Sisko is kidnapped by "Smiley" O'Brien and realizes that, to save the Mirror Universe's Terran Rebellion, he has to come to terms with his wife's death. Or, at least, that should have been the plot. Instead, Sisko gets to act like a pirate and have sex with MU versions of his prime universe co-workers! The Mirror Universe is a location of diminishing returns, but let's step "Through the Looking Glass" and see if we can't wring some interest from it. Clay joins me to discuss the disgusting sexuality of DS9, Sisko buying into the Mirror Universe, and not being affected by meeting your dead wife! Are you looking for older episodes? | Distant Voices – Ft. Clay | 26 Jul 2018 | 00:50:51
Bashir is attacked by a psychic alien, and left to wander a barren dreamscape where all he hears are "Distant Voices". In our first Bashir-centric episode of the third season, the good doctor gives us little reason to be excited. Sledgehammer symbolism is the name of the game! Plus, the villain is a rip-off of Freddy Krueger, except not as cool. Clay joins me to discuss tennis in the 24th century, having the villain explain everything, and growing old! | Visionary – Ft. Neil | 23 Jul 2018 | 00:47:30
O'Brien gets a dose of radiation that has him jumping into the future. Meanwhile, a Romulan delegation arrives at DS9 to discuss the Dominion threat. One of Wes' favorite style of Trek show is the sci-fi mystery, and "Visionary" covers all the bases for that kind of episode. DS9 is also starting to mix in the overarching Dominion plot, and patron Neil joins the show to explain why he's finding that factor so enjoyable. The guys also discuss Odo being good at his job, conflict in the Alpha Quadrant, and falling asleep when you know the future! Are you looking for older episodes? | Prophet Motive | 19 Jul 2018 | 00:32:31
When Grand Nagus Zek tries to completely change Ferengi culture, Quark heads into the wormhole to obtain answers from the Prophets. DS9 might have tried to move the Ferengi away from their characterization as one-note jokes, but Ferengi episodes still tend to serve as the "comedy" episodes of Star Trek: DS9. And yes, putting "comedy" in quotes was entirely intentional. We get reacquainted with the Prophets, and it might not be for the best. Also, Bashir embarks on a weirdly pointless story that takes a subtle dig at the TNG production! Wes flies solo in this podcast, so listen as he wonders about the depth of the Ferengi, the best aspects of the Prophets, and the not so subtle references to sex that DS9 really enjoys! | Destiny – Ft. Clay | 16 Jul 2018 | 00:38:53
The vipers are upon us, the gates are a-burning, and Clay is a-snoring! Destiny is an interesting episode of DS9. It revisits the Bajoran religion in a way we haven't seen since season one. Unfortunately, it's not really interesting in any other way. Featuring a trifecta of half-baked plots that include some poorly thought out Gamma Quadrant exploration, Destiny is an episode that tries to do too much and ultimately accomplishes nothing. Clay joins me to discuss Kira's new haircut, the weaknesses of the Bajoran/Emissary plotline, and the peculiarities of Cardassian make-up! Are you looking for older episodes? | Heart of Stone – Ft. Isaac | 12 Jul 2018 | 01:19:51
Returning to the theme of identity, "Heart of Stone" examines what will happen when Odo and Nog follow their hearts. Odo must confront his feelings about Kira when the two are stuck between a rock and a hard place on an isolated planet, while Nog decides to make a big change in his life and join Starfleet. Isaac stops by the podcast to discuss the loss of agency for Kira, thematic B plots, and the plans of the Changelings! Are you looking for older episodes? | Life Support | 09 Jul 2018 | 00:34:00
After an accident aboard a Bajoran transport, Vedek Bariel is seriously injured. As a Cardassian-Bajoran peace treaty hangs in the balance, Bashir becomes mired in a medical quandary. As the show says farewell to Kira's lover (seriously!), it also spends some time doing all the things that DS9 isn't particularly good at doing. In a solo podcast, Wes tries to determine where it all went wrong, and if it ever had a chance to go right. Also discussed: Bariel with a robot brain, episodes featuring Bashir, and episodes with ending they don't deserve! Are you looking for older episodes? | Past Tense – Ft. Clay | 02 Jul 2018 | 01:13:30
Sisko, Bashir, and Dax are transported back to the early 21st century where they discover that they will become a part of the Bell Riots, a violent event that shaped the future of humanity. It's an episode that features a lot of shotguns, some terrible headwear, and some soapboxing about the upside of humanity. So, just a regular Trek episode then, right? Clay joins me to discuss the most optimistic episode from season three of DS9, how Ray Bradbury could have fixed things, and parodies of rich people! Are you looking for older episodes? | Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang | 14 Nov 2019 | 00:51:56
In "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang", holographic mobsters try to run Vic Fontaine out of town. It's up the crew of DS9 to perform the heist of the century. Wes and Clay discuss being attacked while playing in the holosuite, a heist without much difficulty, and the powerful sexuality of Nana Visitor! Are you looking for older episodes? | Fascination – Ft. Matt | 28 Jun 2018 | 00:45:03
It's the Bajoran Gratitude Festival, and passion is in the air! DS9 becomes the setting for a romantic farce that leaves some viewers wondering what exactly is going on. Lwaxana Troi shows up, Bariel returns, and the O'Briens don't have the energy to do the nasty. Can DS9 be the Trek series that bucks the trend and manages to create a comedy show and a romance show? And, better yet, do them as the same episode? Matt joins the show to discuss an homage to A Midsummer Night's Dream, the high school dance erotica of Star Trek, and the potential of a Sisko-Dax relationship! Are you looking for older episodes? | Defiant – Ft. Darren & Clay | 25 Jun 2018 | 01:17:31
When an overworked Kira tries to impress Commander William Riker by showing him the USS Defiant, she instead sets into motion a plan that might result in a Federation-Cardassian war. Also, it's not Will Riker at all! It's Tom Riker! Remember him? DS9 continues to examine the meaning of identity by bringing Tom Riker into the fold and having him try to walk the line between the worldviews of TNG and DS9. Can a TNG character, even a troubled one like Tom Riker, manage to bring a little bit of TNG ethos into the cynical world of DS9? Darren and Clay stop by to discuss lame reveals, the blossoming Dukat and Sisko relationship, and the tragedy of Tom Riker! Are you looking for older episodes? | Meridian – Ft. Brad | 21 Jun 2018 | 00:48:04
Dax falls in love with an alien who has trouble sticking around, and Quark plots to create a hologram version of Kira that people can bone. And who says romance is dead? Star Trek tends to fumble the ball when it comes to guest star romances (with a few notable exceptions), and Meridian is a prime example. We've got one story that's incredibly boring, and another that potentially causes offense. What a combo! Brad stops by to discuss getting consent, the inconsistency of Dax, and the magic of Jeff Combs! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Civil Defense – Ft. Brad | 19 Jun 2018 | 00:42:39
The station is on lockdown after Jake Sisko and O'Brien accidentally trigger a Cardassian security system from years past. It's always a nice to have a reminder that DS9 was built on the blood of slave labor, and Civil Defense shows us a side of the station we hardly ever see. However, does the insanity of Cardassian paranoia ruin what could a classic "Disaster" episode? Brad joins the show to discuss Dukat's recording sessions, sparkler explosions, and the downside of buying pants on the internet! Are you looking for older episodes? | The Abandoned – Ft. Clay | 14 Jun 2018 | 00:47:38
A young Jem'Hadar is found on a wrecked ship, and the only person who can control him is Odo. Continuing with the exploration of identity that has been the bedrock of season three, The Abandoned examines the conflict within Odo, and the raging conflict within the pants of young Jake Sisko. The episode also features a lot of details about the Jem'Hadar, so just forget about everything you learned in the last episode of the second season: this is where it gets real. Clay joins me to discuss older women dating children, concerns about racism, and DS9 doing a take on "I, Borg"! Are you looking for older episodes? | Second Skin – Ft. Clay | 11 Jun 2018 | 00:41:59
Kira is kidnapped by Cardassians and informed that she is a memory-wiped Cardassian spy. In an episode filled with thematic symbolism, the real star turns out to be the father-daughter relationship between Kira and her Cardassian father. Does that mean that the episode is a misfire? Or just a clever misdirect? Clay joins me to discuss not choosing the right ending, the Orwellian society of Cardassia, and Garak as a crutch! Are you looking for older episodes? | Equilibrium – Ft. Amy | 07 Jun 2018 | 00:43:12
Dax begins to suffer from hallucinations, so the crew makes a trip to the Trill homeworld to see what's troubling her. It's an episode that feels like it would inspire both Eyes Wide Shut and Minority Report! We've got masked figures running around, and pools of goo serving as home to some electric eels. The Trill have proven annoyingly difficult for the show to nail down, and their culture remains as mysterious and oxymoronic as ever, but does Equilibrium shed some light on this bizarre society? Or does it simply produce more questions? Amy joins me to discuss plots with no momentum, the perks of being joined, and the timeline of being stabbed! Are you looking for older episodes? | The House of Quark | 04 Jun 2018 | 00:31:29
After Quark accidentally kills a Klingon patron, the dead man's wife kidnaps Quark and brings him to the Klingon Homeworld to save her house. The Klingons and the Ferengi have little in common, so an episode that compares and contrasts the two has a lot of material to mine. After many years on TNG, Ron D. Moore must be licking his chops to poke fun at the honor culture of the Klingons. These topics and more combine in The House of Quark, which has a lot of fun with its subject matter. Quark gets to be a hero, the Klingons learn a little accounting, and Keiko gets sent away for no good reason! Are you looking for older episodes? | The Search – Ft. Clay | 31 May 2018 | 01:20:52
The Dominion threat sends the crew into the Gamma Quadrant on a search for the elusive Founders. Once there, Odo finds his people and Sisko finds that the price for peace might be too damned high. The Search is a season-opening two-parter, with two distinctly separate episodes comprising the whole. We are introduced to the USS Defiant, we meet the Founders, and we learn that Sisko seems to not have a very high regard for the Federation's testicular fortitude. Clay joins me to discuss not giving the show enough credit, machine gun phasers, and understanding the enemy! Are you looking for older episodes? | DS9 Season Two Wrap Up | 28 May 2018 | 00:28:10
In this podcast, Wes gives his final thoughts about the second season of DS9. While being an improvement over the first season, the second year still featured a somewhat schizophrenic tone as the series settled into itself. Some new DS9 themes appeared, some bad TNG knockoffs failed to impress us, and the series ended the year on a run that seemed to indicate the way forward. We also got introduced to the Dominion, delved into Bajoran politics, and learned some "truths" about mysterious side characters. | Chimera | 11 Nov 2019 | 00:57:26
A Changeling, Laas, finds Odo returning from a conference. Laas reveals that he is another of the Hundred Changelings. Laas tries to convince Odo to leave DS9 and join him in the search for the other Changelings, but things are not so easy for a "Chimera" such as Odo. In this podcast, Wes and Clay get together to talk about the redemption of DS9's seventh season and the complexities of the Changelings. Are you looking for older episodes? | The Jem’Hadar – Ft. Clay | 24 May 2018 | 01:11:03
Sisko, Jake, Nog, and Quark are confronted by the Jem'Hadar while camping in the Gamma Quadrant. The Dominion is finally introduced, and the second season of Deep Space 9 comes to a close. It's been a somewhat slow and ponderous journey to this point, but The Jem'Hadar represents a new direction for the series. The showrunners are changing, the threats are looming, and the answers are lacking. The last 8 episodes of season two were a strong course correction for the show, and we'll have to see how it changes from here on out. Clay joins me to discuss the downsides of camping, the racism of the Federation, and the correct way to destroy a starship! Are you looking for older episodes? | Tribunal – Ft. Modi | 21 May 2018 | 00:39:10
The O'Brien's vacation plans go awry when Chief O'Brien is arrested and interrogated by the Cardassians. He's accused of providing weapons to the Maquis, and his Cardassian trial is a mixture of Orwell and Kafka's worst nightmares. the penultimate episode of the second season is a bit of an odd duck: it's a darkly comic story that feels both of the DS9 universe and totally separate from it. We gain some insight into the judicial system that Gul Dukat described in "The Maquis": does it work within our current understanding of the Cardassian society? Modi joins me to discuss viewing something incorrectly, the mystery of Boone and O'Brien, and believing in your job! Are you looking for older episodes? | The Collaborator – Ft. Brad | 17 May 2018 | 00:51:30
Vedek Bareil has been accused of being a Cardassian collaborator during the Bajoran Occupation. Kira seeks out the truth about her lover. With the election for the next Kai fast approaching, will Kira be able to fend of Vedek Winn until she can find evidence to clear Bareil? Or will the truth cause everything to collapse like a house of cards? Bajoran politics and intrigue are the names of the game as "The Collaborator" marks a return to the storyline that was there from the very beginning of the series. Does the Bajoran political storyline hold up, or is it simply too ill-defined? Brad joins me to discuss unnecessary twists, Bajor in the background, and the correct time to stop saying "Emissary"! | Crossover – Ft. Clay | 14 May 2018 | 01:01:48
A faulty warp engine sends Kira and Bashir into the Mirror Universe, a parallel universe that was first discovered by James T. Kirk 100 years before. Unfortunately, Kirk's intrusion altered the landscape of the Mirror Universe, and the Terran Empire has been soundly defeated by a Cardassian-Klingon alliance. DS9 asks the question: was Kirk's trespass and Prime Directive violation the right thing to do? | The Wire – Ft. Clay | 10 May 2018 | 01:03:32
After coming down with some serious headaches, Garak reveals that he has a device in his brain which is killing him. Dr. Bashir takes it upon himself to help his friend, only to find that the truth may be a lie, and the lies may be the truth. The Wire brings to mind Duet in its structure, but it also recalls character development episodes like Armageddon Game. The character of Garak has his break out moment, and The Wire is an episode that is highly regarded by fans of the series. But is it too much of a bottle episode, or does the "two men in a room" aspect really focus the viewer in on the story? Clay joins me to discuss being unsure of what's happening, the "Big Brother" aspects of Cardassian culture, and Odo's interest in efficiency! Are you looking for older episodes? | The Maquis – Ft. Clay | 03 May 2018 | 01:03:31
When a Cardassian freighter explodes at Deep Space 9, the Cardassians blame Federation colonists in the new Demilitarized Zone. Sisko tries to rescue Gul Dukat, stop the Maquis terrorists, and prevent a new war with the Cardassians. The Maquis is an interesting change of pace for the show: it eschews a sci-fi story to tell a character drama about the ethical failings of the Federation. Ben Sisko is stuck between a rock and a hard place: does he help his longtime friend save the homes of colonists, or does he toe the company line as a uniformed member of Starfleet? Is it a new day for the series, or is this a one-off episode that won't be repeated? Clay joins me to discuss being a saint in paradise, a double mirror, and not making jokes! | Blood Oath – Ft. Clay | 30 Apr 2018 | 00:49:13
Klingon blood oaths are like student debts; you just can't shake 'em! In Blood Oath, three Klingon warriors seek out Curzon Dax at DS9. When they find Jadzia Dax to be a warrior on par with Curzon, the quartet set off on a mission of vengeance. Kor, Koloth, and Kang (Klingons from Star Trek: The Original Series) return to the franchise and to battle against the mysterious and vaguely named Albino. Now, Jadzia must choose between her Federation loyalties and a sacred oath she made in a previous lifetime. Will Dax gain redemption as a character? Does the returning guest star stunt work as a gimmick? Does Cobra Commander say anything cool? Clay and I discuss the return of the Klingons, great lines delivered poorly, and the limits of filming an action scene on a budget! Are you looking for older episodes? | Profit and Loss – Ft. Modi | 27 Apr 2018 | 00:38:14
Quark reunites with his long-lost Cardassian lover. Unfortunately, she's now a member of the Cardassian Underground. Will they be able to overcome their Casablanca inspired difficulties? Will they find a way to stay together? Profit and Loss is a hodgepodge of stories. It deals with love, Cardassian political intrigue, and the mystery of Garak. The episode draws a lot of inspiration from Casablanca, but does it draw enough to make sense? It wears its influences on its sleeve but does that mean it's derivative? Modi joins me to discuss Quark as a romantic lead, the internal workings of Cardassia, and smearing honey on someone's face! Are you looking for older episodes? | Playing God | 23 Apr 2018 | 00:26:33
While hosting her first Trill mentee, Dax discovers a tiny, expanding proto-universe that threatens to destroy the Alpha Quadrant. We've already had a few Dax episodes. Unfortunately, she hasn't impressed us so far, and "Playing God" doesn't do much to fix that. As an attempt to examine the Trill, the episode fails. As an attempt to delve into ethical science fiction, it falls apart. And as a chance to get Jake Sisko laid... well, let's check in on that next season. Wes pilots this episode solo (don't worry, he's a level 5 pilot) and tries to figure out how this fits into the DS9 canon. Let's discuss Trill ambiguity, stepping on ants, and not fixing a problem! | Shadowplay – Ft. Clay | 16 Apr 2018 | 01:01:50
Odo and Dax visit a planet where colonists are disappearing into thin air, Jake tries to avoid disappointing his father, and Kira has a sloppy make-out session with Vedek Bareil! Shadowplay is an early attempt at serialization, but it leaves much to be desired. While featuring a plethora of plots, there's hardly any action or conflict. Clay joins me to discuss the third mention of the Dominion, sloppy kissing, and Odo's pirouettes! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Field of Fire | 07 Nov 2019 | 00:54:21
A series of strange murders rock the station. A killer is on the loose. In response, Ezri consults with Joran, a previous Dax host, in order to enter the mind of a serial killer and find out who is responsible before it's too late. In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss "Field of Fire" and find some brilliance amidst a lot of terrible rubble. Plus! The guys discuss a choir of angels for the Trill, solving crimes with no evidence, and shooting melons! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Paradise – Ft. Amy | 12 Apr 2018 | 00:48:35
Sisko and O'Brien find themselves stranded on a world with no technology, and among humans who don't have their best interests at heart. Paradise is a stock morality tale in the Star Trek universe, but that's not to say it's a bad hour of television. It's hard to start a cult, but it's even more difficult to hold one together with pesky Starfleet officers hanging around, sweeping corn. Amy joins the show to discuss being in a cult, the unique heroism of Sisko, and cringing at Dax! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Whispers – Ft. Clay & Neil | 09 Apr 2018 | 01:15:02
Upon returning from a mission to the Parada system, O'Brien begins to notice the crew acting strange around him and suspects there may be some unknown influence at work. Why is his wife is acting (badly) strangely? Why does Sisko have him running useless errands? Why have they revoked his security clearance? Clay and Neil join me to discuss a mystery-thriller in the vein of The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, and whether or not it works for Star Trek. Plus, we discuss British/Irish accents, the style of Miles O'Brien, and killing an exact copy of yourself! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! | Armageddon Game – Ft. Amy | 05 Apr 2018 | 00:48:32
A planet torn apart by biological warfare doesn't seem like a likely place to make friends, but this is Star Trek. Armageddon Game is an episode that explores the Bashir and O'Brien "friendship". It's a solid character piece, albeit one book ended by some questionable science fiction. Amy joins me to discuss unnecessary murder, being friends with single people, and how a widow should grieve!
