My High School Art Teacher: Nancy Carty27 Jun 202301:12:46

Welcome folks to Episode 53 of The Pencil Pushers Podcast. In this convo, I speak to educator, painter and photographer, Nancy Carty. She also happened to be my high school art teacher. Nancy has been on my mind for a while to showcase on the podcast because of her art education background, steering budding creatives into a life in the arts for 4 decades. You can imagine there was plenty she'd learned and taught in that time. Nancy is perhaps not your average teacher. She grew up in Saudi Arabia, as an American child living in the middle east. This helped inform her roaming spirit and a love of culture and art. Nancy also talks about teaching in today's ever-changing world, how she got her start while living and working in several towns, cities and countries, her thoughts and advice on AI and more.I love this talk with one of my biggest cheerleaders when perhaps I needed it most. I think you will too - so, sit back, relax and enjoy my chat with Nancy.

Nicolette Capuano06 Feb 202301:08:21

Welcome folks to the Pencil Pushers Podcast. I'm your humble host Mike Rosado, illustrator, designer and lover of all things creative, and I talk with top tier artists in the hand-drawn arts. Today is no exception, where I talk to Nicolette Capuano, owner and primary artist for Nicolette Atelier, a bespoke mural and decorative arts studio specializing for both residential and commercial fields. I'd met Nicolette years ago in my hometown of Raleigh, and connected through social media, but that was about it. That said, I'd been watching her work from afar and I was always blown away by her skill and diversity of styles in a number of different spaces. Our talk here really showcases not only her love for the creative work, but how she took her families entreprenurial spirit into her own studio, giving her a solid business model that is surely the envy of many. Needless to say, there are lots of gold nuggets of wisdom for those looking to start their own successful studio. Nicolette was a joy to talk to as I'm sure you'll see. So, without further ado, do yourself a favor - sit down, relax and enjoy my chat with Nicolette.

I'm your humble host, Mike Rosado, and it's a pleasure to be sitting here introducing to you our very first guest of 2022: Graphic Artist, Stationer and Artrepreneur, Kate Smith. DIY an Animation Film with the Incomparable Dean Lennert02 Nov 202101:00:55

Today we speak with independent filmmaker and animator, Dean Lennert. Dean has a storied history of working with some of the most popular TV shows and movies of the past 30 years, including Doug, Beavis and Butthead, Sesame Street, SNL's TV Funhouse, the Oscar award winning short, Bunny and the huge big screen hit, Ice Age.

He's also currently working on his passion project, Dear Anna Olson, a short animated film he's been working on for over 30 years. Although we get to chat about what it was like working for creatives like Mike Judge and studying with masters like Richard Williams, what I enjoyed most of all was talking to him about Dear Anna Olson and having him share what it's like to create an project as large and tedious as an animated film, funded solely by himself and online donations. I've seen parts of the film, and they just look ridiculously good. I can't wait to see the final film.

Learn about it all on this episode of The Pencil Pushers Podcast -  this is a great one folks - so do yourself a favor - sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Dean.

Animation Luminary, Don Hahn18 Oct 202101:02:35

Ok folks - here we are with another fine episode of the Pencil Pushers Podcast. I am, as always, your humble host Mike Rosado. Today we get to share with you a very special conversation with a true legend - the one and only Don Hahn. Don is largely known as the longtime producer of some of the greatest animated films of the past 50 years spanning from his start at the Walt Disney studios in the 70's to the resurgence of the public's love for animation with films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and much more. Don's love of Walt Disney the man himself as well as the studio is evident in not only the films he's helped lead, but also the books he's written and the documentaries he's directed.

Pound for pound, I'd put Don at the top of the list for most interesting person at Disney's studio since Walt left the stage back in the 1960's. His perspectives as a leader working with some of the most talented creatives in Hollywood - we're talking Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg, Howard Ashman, Richard Williams, Robert Zemekis and others - has made this conversation a tough one to pack into a one hour episode. But, luckily, we got it done and I can't tell you enough how great a conversation it was. So, do yourself a favor, grab yourself a drink, sit back back relax and enjoy my chat with Don.

Lauren Hom's Recipe for Success18 Aug 202101:25:33

Welcome folks to another fine episode of the Pencil Pushers Podcast. I'm your humble host, Mike Rosado and we have got another gem today with creative mastermind, Lauren Hom.

Lauren is a highly prolific illustrator, lettering artist, foodie, and more with a massive social media following that's hit meteoric heights through her persistence to pave new paths of creative expression beyond her lettering style, and in turn, invited others to do the same. What I love about her story is that she works from her gut - never afraid to listen to her intuitive muse, even at the cost of potential "failure".

She pulls from the paths of the likes of a Picasso, one who's never satisfied with status quo, and not relying on style to define her as an artist in movement - and she works from a state of passion and curiosity that is refreshing in an era where it can be tough to pull away from what people know of your work. I found Lauren to be an absolute delight and a true dynamo who's in her element and full of pearls of wisdom.

highly recommend you slide on over to her instagram @homsweethom to be a part of her community of creatives while you sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Lauren.

100 Year Anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre18 Jun 202100:42:13

Today, we have a very special episode where we invited my good friend Dameon Williams back to the podcast along with fellow illustrator Josh Lewis as we discuss their new creative collaboration, marking the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. If you're not familiar with the incident, well you're most likely not alone. It's an unfortunately darker part of American history, where an entire thriving black community was attacked by its fellow citizens. A part of our history that I knew nothing about just a few years back. Beautifully illustrated, this six part series told on Instagram alone is a great reminder of the powers we artists hold in helping us all better understand the human condition, heal our wounds and bring us closer together.

Follow the storyline with their miniseries on instagram here:

@dameon_williams & @joshllewis

Join us as we discuss how the project came to be, what the story meant to them individually and what they hope the project will spark for the future. I really enjoyed my time them and hope you will too as you sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Dameon and Josh.

Blue Collar Artist, Joseph Giampino24 May 202100:59:55

Welcome folks to another episode of the Pencil Pushers Podcast and I'm your humble host Mike Rosado. Today, we speak with my good friend and go-to creative partner for all signs hand-painted, Joseph Giampino. Joseph is what one might call a blue collar artist. A sign painter that gets the call for virtually every new hot retail shop, restaurant, brewery and more. Hand painted signs have been around for millennia, reaching it's height during the industrial age, but had a steep decline with the advent of vinyl lettering, causing the near death of one of the great artistic trades. Joseph is one of the artists that have felt a deep and profound passion for the storied craft and it shows in his stellar work around the state of North Carolina. We talk about what it takes to make it as a commercial sign painter, the history of the craft internationally and how he used his talents to contribute to the powerful street art that was born out of the tragedy of George Floyd's death. Do yourself a favor, head over to Instagram and find him @spclsigns - while you sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Joseph.

He worked on classic characters during their renaissance in the 80's and 90's such as Gaston, Jafar, Pumbaa, John Smith, Dr. Sweet and more. Which we do talk about, but the real meat of our conversation comes when we dive into his passion for drawing and a passing of the torch, as we talk about his decades of knowledge through teaching at schools as well as his amazing book, Quick sketching with Ron Husband. This ones a little personal too. Ron was the first animator that ever connected with me when I wrote Walt Disney Studios as a 12 year old dreaming of working there as a career. He was candid, open and super humble as he talked about the importance of being a team player and working for the greater vision of an artistic project. I'm super pumped to share this discussion with you, so do yourself a favor, follow him on ronhusband.blogspot.com while I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Ron.

Animator John Pomeroy08 Dec 202000:57:36
Welcome Folks - you are listening to the Pencil Pushers Podcast and I'm your humble host Mike Rosado. Today, we share my talk with the legendary animator, John Pomeroy - somebody, who in my opinion, is one of the most important figures in the field for the past 50 years. Listen in as we twist and twirl through his storied career working under the tutelage of the Nine Old Men at Disney, teaming up with Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to create their own animation studio, creating classics like The Secret of Nimh, American Tail and Land Before Time, coming back back to Disney as lead animator for Pocohontas, Atlantis, Fantasia 2000 and more. We also chat about burnout, how to have a successful work life balance, and what he's doing next with his new online animation school, Pomeroy Art Academy. This one is a real banger as our convo starts right out of the gates on how he, Don and Gary took a massive gamble and helped the world fall in love with animation again. And so, without further ado, I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our talk with John.

Animation Director on WB's 'Looney Tunes Cartoons' Joey Capps24 Aug 202001:03:36

Welcome Leadheads. Today, we are back again with another banger for your ears. Yea, folks - Episode 26 brings us to one of my personally most anticipated interviews with animator Joey Capps. Joey's journey is power-packed with gracing his talents on a multitude of animation projects that most of us have heard of, whether you're an animator or not, including Teen Titans Go, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Scooby Doo and finally his current hot gig, the all new return-to-form Looney Tunes cartoons on HBO Max, serving the role of animation supervisor. Joey talks about making his way in a very competitive industry, surrounding himself with as many talented folks as possible, navigating the tough waters of hand-drawn animation at a time when a lot of folks thought it was dead and how he landed the gig with Looney Tunes. Joey was about a nice a guy as you could hope for in a guest. But, don't take my word for it. Grab yourself a nice cold one, sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Joey.

Dameon Williams16 Jun 202000:48:14

This episode we speak with my good friend and super talented artist, Dameon Williams. Dameon's a Father of three, husband of one, doing what literally most artistic people do - working a not-so-artistic full-time job - at a hospital no-less, smack dab in the middle of a pandemic, while spending most of every other waking moment crafting beautiful illustrations. His art is playful and informative, using his skills to help showcase historical and social elements dealing largely with people of color and beyond. It was great to catch up with him on how he's personally handling Covid-19 through his hospital work as well as a being a concerned citizen who happens to also be African American during a historical moment following the death of George Floyd. Take a listen and enjoy our talk with Dameon!
