Episode 95: 1995 Soundtrack Misfits

Épisode 95

jeudi 23 mai 2024Durée 01:28:53

We're back! For our 95th episode, we bring you a collection of soundtrack cuts from 1995. It was the height of the 90s, when 80s pop stars showed up in the most random movies, fledgling rock bands popped up on teen cult classics, and also Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh Eagles teamed up with Lita Ford to do the theme song for a RoboCop TV series. 1995 was definitely a mood...

Also appearing in this episode: Tom Jones covering Lenny Kravitz for the Jerky Boys movie, The Proclaimers covering The Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" for the movie Bye Bye Love, we get a few cuts from Green Day, Wax, and Salt N' Pepa. Also Bryan Adams performs the drippiest, horniest song ever written...

Ladies and gentlemen, this is 1995.

Episode 94: Airheads

Épisode 94

lundi 4 mars 2024Durée 01:34:02

Hello all you OST Party fans out there in radioland! Are you ready to rock?!

On this episode we're looking at the 1994 comedy AIRHEADS! Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi and OST Party fave Brendan Fraser are The Lone Rangers, a down and out LA rock trio. In a last ditch effort to land a record deal, they take a radio station hostage and demand to have their music heard.

The movie may be a grim foreshadowing of FM rock radio's future, but the movie's a hell of a lot of fun. And the soundtrack is pretty neat too. We get a slammin' opening credits song from Motorhead and Ice T, a weird Smiths cover from Anthrax, an even weirder Van Halen cover from Four Non Blondes, and naturally, the #1 hit single from the movie's own Lone Rangers! So strap yourselves in and get ready to rock!

Episode 85: Here’s Some Money, Go See a Star War

Épisode 85

jeudi 9 mars 2023Durée 56:31

When we're not hollering about movie soundtracks, our second favorite hobby is hollering about Star Wars. So on this episode we bring you a Special Edition of our On The Fives where we take a look at ten songs about or inspired by Star Wars.

But there's a twist! With each song, we take turns pitching our own ideas for Star Wars movies based on those songs. And we've got some real bangers here. There are the Weird Al songs, naturally, but we also have tracks from The Hold Steady, Tenacious D, Blink 182 and more! So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride through our two broken imaginations!

INTRO: "I'm Han Solo" from Star Wars Kinect

OUTRO: "Dance Rocket" by Jesse Spillane

Episode 84: Blast from the Past

Épisode 84

jeudi 2 février 2023Durée 01:34:47

A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser.

Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome.

The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we!

Episode 83: 2022 in Review

Épisode 83

vendredi 30 décembre 2022Durée 51:32

On this episode we’re wrapping up 2022! Join us as we take a look back at our podcasting year and revisit some of our favorite tracks we’ve unearthed along the way. Joe and Libby each picked five songs that have stuck with them this year, for one reason or another. Some new favorites, some unkillable earworms, and some songs so deeply weird we’re still amazed they even exist. This episode runs the gamut of everything from the new jack swing of Ghostbusters II to the classic rock of Hot Fuzz, and a whole lot in between!

So raise a glass with us as we bid farewell to 2022, and look forward to even weirder things in 2023!

Episode 82: Gremlins

Épisode 82

jeudi 8 décembre 2022Durée 01:07:21

This podcast has been overrun by gremlins! We were supposed to do a Thanksgiving episode on Planes Trains & Automobiles, but the powers that be said, "No, you're doing Gremlins." Those powers may or may not be gremlins. (Send help!)

Anyway, Gremlins has been described as It's A Wonderful Life by way of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and while that thematic well runs deep, the film is mostly concerned with lots and lots of puppet mayhem!

The soundtrack album is short, but features some strange choices, including tracks from Peter Gabriel, Quarterflash and Michael Sembello. We'll also discuss a few of the holiday needledrops, which have become classic scenes in their own right. So grab a glass of egg nog and join us for the wild ride that is Gremlins!

Episode 81: Hot Fuzz

Épisode 81

vendredi 18 novembre 2022Durée 01:28:18

We're returning to the world of Edgar Wright this week with the soundtrack to Hot Fuzz! Wright has a reputation for movie soundtracks that are impeccably curated, and Hot Fuzz is no different. The story of The Only Good Cop In England solving a string of murders in the small village of Sandford finds Wright leaning heavily on classic rock tunes from every era.

The film is an absolute riot, but the soundtrack is equally impressive. Sporting tracks from classic acts The Kinks, The Troggs, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but also more modern artists such as The Fratellis, Supergrass and Eels. So strap on your kevlar, water the peace lily and join us down at the pub for a little Hot Fuzz!

Episode 80: Dinosaurs, ”Big Songs”

Épisode 80

jeudi 27 octobre 2022Durée 01:09:18

This week we're dipping back into the world of TV. Why, you ask? Because we can do whatever we want!

Only 90s Kids may remember the phenomenon known as Dinosaurs, an ABC sitcom that ran from 1991 to 1995 and followed the adventures of dinosaur Earl Sinclair and his prehistoric family. Produced by the Jim Henson company, Dinosaurs was not only a marvel of live-action puppetry, but also just some damn funny television.

And in 1992, they produced the album "Big Songs". You'd think this would be a compilation of songs from the show, right? Wrong! This album features twelve tracks recorded by the show's cast exclusively for the album. And most surprising of all, many of the songs are quite good! Join us as we dive in!

SHOW NOTES:

INTRO: "Dinosaurs" theme by Bruce Broughton and Ray Colcord

OUTRO: "I'm a Dinosaur" by Baby Sinclair

Episode 79: O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Épisode 79

jeudi 29 septembre 2022Durée 01:46:03

Are you ready to get real old-timey? This week we discuss the folk and bluegrass revival of O Brother, Where Art Thou? Loosely based on "The Odyssey", Joel and Ethan Coen pulled together an all-star lineup of country musicians to score this wacky road trip through Depression-era Mississippi.

The film is a hoot, but the soundtrack was a sensation. The album hit #1 on the charts over a year after its release, and went on to sell 8 million copies. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" and "O Death" won all the awards, but the real standouts on this album come from Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, The Whites, and more!

So join us as we dig deep into the history of American folk music. This episode's an odyssey all on its own!

Episode 78: Swingers

Épisode 78

jeudi 8 septembre 2022Durée 01:44:30

This week's podcast is all about Vegas, baby! Well...not exactly. It's all about Swingers, which spends a grand total of 15 minutes in Las Vegas. The rest is all about idealizing modern notions of coolness all set to a soundtrack of swing and lounge revival goodness.

Swingers was one of the pillars of the mid-90s indie film boom, and also a signpost for the toxic masculinity of the era. In between all of that is a soundtrack that Libby calls "wall-to-wall bangers". We get standards from Dean Martin and Tony Bennett, some classic country from Roger Miller and George Jones, and a healthy dose of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy for good measure. So put on your best bowling shirt and grab yourself a cocktail, cuz this episode is money, baby!
