IFS and Attachment with David Eckel07 May 202400:50:26

On today's episode I chat with David Eckel, an accredited mental health social worker and IFS Level 2 therapist in Australia. He is currently completing his Ph.D. focused on Internal Family Systems Therapy and Adult Attachment. As part of his Ph.D. thesis, he conducted qualitative research asking the question: “How might Internal Family Systems Therapy conceptualise and treat adults with attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety?” He shares some of his findings and insights.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The significance of attachment patterns and how they can change across relationships and contexts
  • Attachment defintion and history of the theory
  • Understanding attachment patterns in repairing ruptures (repair is key)
  • Intersections between attachment theory and IFS
  • Can we call IFS an attachment-based therapy?
  • "The Controversy" around internal vs. external attachment
  • His research process
  • Can parts have different attachment styles?
  • The role of Self in healing attachment wounds
  • Ruptures and negotiating separation and togetherness are normal and can be modeled in therapy
  • Anxious attachment may involve reactivity, helplessness, and pulling others in
  • Avoidant attachment may involve deactivation, caretaking, and self reliance
  • How attachment relates to parts

IFS and Finding Freedom from Religious Trauma with Natalie Hoffman05 Apr 202400:45:26
On today's podcast I chat with Natalie Hoffman, author, podcast host and IFS enthusiast about her new memoir.   One of the things I loved about this book is the IFS-y structure of it. In one section, she allows her younger parts to tell their story, their memories and she responds to each from Self. Another section is written like a play: Named parts responding and reacting to one another.   Natalie Hoffman is the author of "Is it Me? Making Sense of Your Confusing Marriage: A Christian Woman's Guide to Hidden Emotional and Spiritual Abuse" and "All the Scary Little Gods: a Memoir" as well as the host of the Flying Free podcast. She is a mother, grandmother, educator, and passionate advocate for Christian women in abusive homes and churches. Through the Flying Free Sisterhood program, Natalie empowers Christian women to discover and use their God-given voices, gifts, and freedom to make their own adult choices for their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being.   ------ "Scary little gods in our lives try to control and steal our true Essence, making us feel safe but trapping us in fear." These 'scary little gods' can be organizations, family culture, or our own inner parts.

Natalie reflects on her religious, traumatic childhood experiences and how they relate to her identity and connection to her True Self and to the Creator.

We talk about her passion for helping women of faith, particularly Christian women, who are struggling with disillusionment and a lack of self-worth.

She shares about leaving toxic environments and abusive relationships and the importance of listening to our inner parts.

We talk about others 'bullying' parts and how seeing hurtful behavior through this lens helps our own systems.

We talk about ways to connect to our younger parts and how we all can live in Freedom and Choice.

It is a beautiful, rich conversation.

IFS and Becoming An Ancestor with Derek Scott22 Mar 202400:40:22

Derek Scott and I got to meet one last time here on the podcast. I want to share with you what I know because a lot of you have asked. You will find out a lot in this episode from Derek himself.

I was among a small group who knew he was sick and when he was passing. After we recorded the episode I got to read his book and watch a session between him and Dick Schwartz, the founder of IFS.

My understanding is you will be able to see this incredible session when you buy the book. Sign up for the launch here: Dead (Spoiler Alert): a Psychotherapist's Journey With Cancer

If you haven't heard of Derek Scott, I invite you to go to YouTube and check out his channel. Many of us in the IFS community learned so much by watching his videos.

He and I recorded a full IFS session on video three years ago. He would text me periodically and let me know how many people had watched it. I just looked -- it has 70,000 views!

Derek ran an organization called IFSCA, based in Canada, which teach IFS courses. In all the years I’ve known Derek he is clear to honor Dick Schwartz, the founder of IFS. He makes it known that his courses are not IFS trainings. He was always careful to distinguish that and to be so respectful of Dick.

If you go to the podcast page on my website and search for Derek Scott, you will see several episodes we did together. Over the years he would text me and say, "Hey do you wanna talk about such and such?" I’d always say yes.

Here are all the links:

He was a friend, and I am so grateful for his presence in my life. The last text I received from him was a week before he died, and it was just this emoji … 🤸‍♀️

Sending you all so much warmth and compassion as you listen to this episode.

All my love,

Tammy

IFS and Relational Intelligence with François Le Doze15 Mar 202400:56:08

On today's episode I chat with Dr. François Le Doze, MD. He is a psychotherapist, an IFS therapist, and trainer and has been a neurologist for nearly thirty years in a teaching Hospital in Caen, France. He has always been interested in the relationship between the body and mind, and his knowledge of neuroscience allows him to integrate recent neuroscientific findings into his psychotherapy practice. He's actively developing a model of psychotherapy called Relational Intelligence® based on his clinical experience and expertise.

In this episode we chat about:

  • How crisis caused him to reconsider his relationship with IFS and Psychotherapy
  • The influence of Polyvagal Theory on his Relational Intelligence Model
  • "This is not a Part, but a disruption in my nervous system."
  • "This isn't You; but a State of you."
  • A key clarification in the Relational Intelligence model: Self-regulation = what is happening in your body; Co-regulation = what is happening between us.
  • Bubble Theory: using meta-cogniton to connect and calm the nervous system

Two a-ha moments for me:

  1. "We need to DO something TO the system and not expect the system will be able to unblend from the Inside Out."
  2. Self Energy must be the regulator the client's system. This Self Energy can originate from either the Self of the client or the Self of the therapist. The client's Self CANNOT lead if their nervous system is dysregulated. In such cases we must tend to the saftey within the therapeutic relationship before proceeding (just as children experience Self of their parents through attachment before their own Self).

IFS and Healing Through Stories with Boo Trundle23 Feb 202400:47:19

On this week’s episode I chat with Boo Trundle about her IFS-inspired novel, The Daughter Ship. Boo is a writer, artist, and performer whose work has appeared across various platforms and publications, including The Brooklyn Rail, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, and NPR’s The Moth. She has released three albums of original music with Big Deal Records.

I absolutely loved this book and the way she blended years of inner child work and IFS therapy to create the unique Parts perspective she uses to write the novel. She shares her process of discovering and relating to different parts and learning how to tell their stories. We identify legacy burdens, ancestral guides, and which character in the novel represents her true Self.

We talk about:

  • Using IFS to inform and transform her writing (3:00)

  • The unique storytelling of the novel telling her Parts’ stories (7:00)

  • Her journey discovering her Parts and learning their stories (12:00)

  • Writing as a healing and spiritual experience (16:00)

  • Connecting with Self and ancestral guides during a summer writing workshop (20:00)

IFS and The Council for Indigenous IFS with Julia Sullivan and Gregg Paisley16 Feb 202400:52:35

On today's episode I chat with Julia Sullivan and Gregg Paisley, two of the authors of the Altogether Us book chapter on Embodying IFS with Native American Clients. They are members of The Council for Indigenous IFS, and this is the focus of this episode.

Julia Sullivan, MBA (she/her) is a social activist who integrates her Latina roots (Ralámuli descent), Indigenous spirituality, and all she gained from being one of the first Latinas to earn an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. After 30 years in executive leadership and organizational development, she now brings Self leadership to people using Internal Family Systems (IFS). She co-founded the Council for Indigenous IFS to create a forum for cross-tribal learning and resource sharing. Julia convenes Self Led Leaders, a global community of coaches and consultants bringing IFS-informed practices to business, as well as Cornsilk, which brings these practices to the general public. Julia relaxes with frequent walks around a lake with her IFS-trained husband, Chris, basking in the beauty of nature.   Gregg Paisley, MBA (he/him) spent most of his career in the private sector, working as a senior executive in SMB, NASDAQ, and Fortune 500 enterprise software and hardware companies, as well as in professional audio/video/lighting. An enrolled Blackfeet (Amskapi Piikani band), he is one of the few American Indians fortunate enough to have walked that path. Late in life he came to the epiphany that the only possible reason the Creator would shower such undeserved blessings and resources on him is so he could help others find their own blessings. Since retiring from industry in 2003, he has focused on creating jobs, increasing tribal household incomes, and providing social services (especially for under-served tribal children) on a large Montana reservation. Gregg is a member of the Council for Indigenous IFS. In his spare time, Gregg relaxes as a musician on keyboards and guitar. He stays connected to the land in both the Pacific Northwest and northern Montana.

We talk about:

  • Introductions (0)
  • Indigenous IFS Council history (5:00)
  • Communal Collective Unburdening worshop at the 2023 IFS Annual Conference (9:00)
  • Broad Impact of their work on and off Reservations (14:00)
  • Greg's Intro to IFS and his experience (17:00)
  • HumBle during difficult interactions and experiene at conference continued (24:00)
  • Land Acknoweldgements (39:00)
  • Greg's native and tribe Poetry and the Spread of IFS among indigenious (41:00)
  • 8 C meetings (47:00)

IFS and Echoes of Ancestral Wisdom: Stories of Indigenous Resilience and Connection with Suzan McVicker and Pete Patton09 Feb 202400:48:53
On today's episode I chat with two of the four authors of the Embodying IFS with Native American Clients chapter in the Altogether Us book, Suzan McVicker and Pete Patton. The other two authors, Julia Sullivan and Gregg Paisley will be on the show next week.

Suzan McVicker, PhD, is a long-time certified IFS therapist, teacher, and former IFS trainer whose two recent publications, an IFS article and an IFS book chapter, are invitations to build a safe bridge between Indigenous Peoples and the global IFS community.  She was one of the first IFS practitioners to voice her personal experience as a Cherokee descendant in the collective narrative about the healing contributions of Indigenous worldview precepts for IFS practitioners with an initial publication through APA (American Psychological Association) in 2010.

Pete Patton is Inuit, and currently exists on the land of the Clatsop-Nehalam Tribe in Astoria, Oregon. Pete is currently a Therapist for the local Mental Health Authority in Clatsop County.  Pete is also actively involved in developing a community of faith (Great Spirit Gathering) whose purpose is to support, celebrate, and embody Native American Spirituality in all its ways of being expressed/embodied.     We talk about: - Deer Medicine and Indigenous culture (1:00) - Indigenous perspectives on deer medicine as energy (2:00) - Experiential storytelling in culture and used in the Chapter (10:00) - Identity, adoption, and heritage (14:00) - Indigenous inspired IFS and the 7 B's (34:00) (HumBle; Right to Be, Belong, Become; Blessing; Balance; Embodied Learning; Ceremony as UnBurdening; Belly Laugh)

IFS and New Years Resolutions by Enneagram Type (Parts!) with Joan Ryan29 Dec 202300:38:56

On today's episode, Joan Ryan and I talk about New Years resolutions that may be generated by the Parts of us found in our Enneagram Type. We know that Parts inside Type are our Major Players in our system. The Enneagram gives us a short cut to bring awareness to these parts, to help us unblend, and to bring more Self energy forward.

We have done lots of podcasts on this subject (and wrote a book chapter in Altogether Us). You can listen to those episodes here (there is a new search feature on my website!):  Our podcasts episodes on tammysollenberger.com

Are you new to the enneagram and want to know more? We have an introduction to the Integration of IFS with the Enneagram coming in January 2023. Do you know a lot about both models? We will be running a group soon. Go to either of our websites to find out more!

Happy New Year!

IFS and Tending the Soul with Valerie Louis24 Nov 202301:02:01
On today's episode I chat with Valerie Louis, SEP, PhD who is a level 3 trained certified IFS practitioner. Valerie is passionate about working with therapists, practitioners, healers, and educators for personal and professional development.   We talk about:   - Spirituality and IFS as a Soul Tending process   - How practitioners can be 'better' and not get burned out   - What leading from curiousity and compassion means   - A possilbe 3rd element, not just the binary of Self and Part where personality and nervous system exist   - IFS being in the realm of the Healer and in the spiritual world, not just an evidence based practice   - How IFS is suited to root us out of compulsory culture and into living a life that is more in line with our desires and nature (here would be things like relationship structures, communication styles, neurodivergent, autistic, and the concept that continual self and regulation is not the goal.)   --- I LOVED the spiritual focus and FEELING this conversation left me experiencing. Valerie talks about living, existing, and BEING as if there is no divide between our spiritual life, our spiritual practices, and our daily life. Because there really is not.   But the focus really is on seeing IFS as a soul tending process, as something sacred and miraculous.   Enjoy. -----   To connect with Valerie and get on her newsletter go to VALERIE LOUIS, PH.D. IFS and PATH to 12- Step Recovery Program with Nadine Lucas07 Nov 202300:57:58

November 2023: UPDATE from Nadine – Please note that I am no longer affiliated with the PATH Program. This podcast represents my personal journey from two years ago as I was trying to integrate my 30-year experience with overeaters anonymous and my understanding of Internal Family Systems. Currently I am focusing on providing IFS therapy and workshops related to eating disorders, addiction, and trauma. For more information, Please visit my website at https://compassionbasedhealing.com/

-------

Happy 2021! I thought it would be a good way to start the year by talking about IFS and the 12 steps as so. many. of. us. will make goals around changing behaviors we do not like (or PARTS of us do not like!).

I'm super excited to chat with my guest Nadine Lucas, Level 2 IFS trained, who has converted the 12 step program into IFS language called PATH- Program for Addiction and Trauma Healing.

We chat about her struggle with the God language in 12 Step programs and her pull to return again and again for the community and connection.

Nadine has begun a very popular 12 step and IFS program that is just in the beginning stages.

We talk a lot of OA (Overeaters Anonymous) and the Power of the Self (power seems to need a Capital letter here).

The first half is her story and the 2nd half is about reframing the first three steps. The 2nd half is rich with IFS concepts like Self, firefighters, burdens, exiles, and healing. We talk about 'Are parts addicted?'

Stay tuned for the Heirloom Summit link where you can receive a discount on your enrollment!

Enjoy!

IFS and Embodying IFS with Black Clients with Fatimah FInney13 Oct 202300:44:58

On today's episode I chat with Fatimah Finney who wrote a chapter in the Altogether Us book entitled, "Embodying IFS with Black Clients."

Listening to this epsiode this week could not be more timely as the last thing we talk about is Collective Healing. Fatimah says, "My liberation is your liberation.. what is happening across the globe impacts us."

Fatimah is a licensed mental health counselor, skilled DEI consultant and workshop facilitator. She enjoys existing as a Black Muslim Woman and apparently loves buying books she doesn't get to read. Her toddlers are her tormentors and daily doses of Self energy!    We talk about: - Speak about race, it is already in the room - Recognizing dominance and power positions in txp - Importance of working with therapist's parts (always!) but NOT in session with your black client - Connection and Compassion can exist when there is not 'sameness', when there is a limit to my 'getting it' - Giving clients the floor to tell their own story - Importance of intentional community - Black Joy - Intercultural competence: how can we engage in differences in a connecting way - "Being with the beauty and the wonder of the person who is in front of me." - Knowing where your line of knowledge ends and begins - Leadership development- What is the point of your power? How do you get and recieve feedback? - Collective healing ---   It is a really beautiful episode.    --- To find out more about Fatimah go to Meet Fatimah — Fatimah Finney (healingdifferently.com)

IFS and Adoptees with Kathy Mackechney06 Oct 202300:41:57

On today's podcast I chat with Kathy Mackechney, who wrote a chapter in Altogether Us.

Kathy is a relinquishee-adoptee whose purpose is helping other adoptees heal the burdens of having been relinquished, or removed, and adopted. She is a Level-3 trained, IFS-certified therapist and consultant wtih a private practice in Denver.

We talk about:

  • Helping adoptees feel heard and understood
  • Shifting language from adoption-industry and adoptive-parent-centric perspective to language that centers the experience of the person who was relinquished, and therefore needed to be adopted- hence the term 'relinquishee' or 'survivor of infant-mother separation'
  • Educating 'biologicals' about why adoptees should be recognized as a marginalized group
  • Why 'Not all Parts Get Adopted"
  • How Self gets exiled
  • Importance of using Implicit Direct Access
  • Possible Parts who may be found (Not me, Dismissed, sense of being alone, Relationship stressors, Control, Self doubt, Second quessing).

On today's podcast I talk with Martha Sweezy. Martha has authored all the IFS books with all the IFS people. Her latest solo book project is entitled, "Internal Family Systems for Shame and Guilt."

Martha says, "Understanding shame and guilt in the context of psychic multiplicity is to understand how trauma becomes traumatic over time and how an external insult becomes an internal identity and process."

I took notes.  I think you may want to also.

Check out all the things Martha Sweezy here: Martha Sweezy, Ph.D. | Assistant Professor, Harvard University Medical School and IFS Therapist in Northampton, Massachusetts

IFS and Coaching with Brian Jaudon04 Jul 202300:57:41

On today's podcast I chat with Brian Jaudon, an IFS-trained coach who works with a wide range of clients from executives and entrepreneurs to shamans and creatives.

Brian has led two highly successful IFS and Coaching courses and has been around the IFS world for a long time. We chatted a few times offline when I started the podcast a few years ago so I love that he is the last guest for season 3.

We have a sweet conversation- the best kind I think for the podcast- it has a lot of interesting information about IFS, Gift Development, asking good questions, Contracting, working with Parts.

But the best part is the authentic connection and the conversation that flows so naturally from that. I'm so grateful to him and to all the guests and listeners who make this so fun and rewarding.

Brian says the right question at the right moment is a key that unlocks a lock. Then we give space to experience the ripple that comes from it.

We chatted afterwards about ALL the things and he did this for me- he asked the right question, in the right moment and let silence sit for a minute. The question and the curiosity I have about it continues to ripple.

I'll see you in the fall for season 4....

Enjoy.

IFS and Polarizations with Ann Sinko21 Jun 202400:19:30

On today's epsiode I chat with Ann Sinko about identifying and working with polarizations. We discuss:

  • Polarizations occur when systems fall out of balance, leading to power struggles and a cycle of yes/no energy
  • The importance of recognizing and working with polarizations in IFS and how they can lead to chronic stuckness
  • Inherited polarizations as legacy burdens
  • Polarization as a sign of movement and change

Ann will host a workshop on June 27, 2024 with Life Architect on working with polarized parts. Use this link to register so they know you heard about it on The One Inside:

IFS and All Genders Welcome with Sand Chang09 Jun 202300:51:55
On today's podcast I talk with Dr. Sand Chang who wrote a chapter in the upcoming Altogether Us book.   Dr. Sand Chang is a Chinese American nonbinary psychologist, DEI consultant, certified IFS therapist, consultant, and trainer. Their work is centered on body liberation, particularly in the realms of trans health, eating disorders, and trauma recovery.   We talk about: - Trans-affirming IFS (that's what the chapter in Jenna's book is about) - Teaching an IFS foundations course to queer and trans therapists and the importance of affinity trainings (with Nic Wildes) - Body liberation, eating disorders, de-pathologizing parts that use disordered eating to help someone to survive in a white supremacist, fatphobic, transphobic culture - Creating affirming spaces - knowing that each person's liberation is tied to others' liberations - The 9th "C" of Self energy being community/collectivism and how this plays out not just in the world but specifically in IFS training spaces.   As an Assistant Trainer Mentee and someone who is moving toward being an IFSI trainer, these are things which Sand feels very passionate. They desire to create the spaces that don't always exist and have often harmed trans and queer folks.   Find out more about them here: SAND CHANG, PHD and IFS With Trans and/or Nonbinary Communities — Queer and Trans Internal Family Systems (qtifs.com)

IFS and Talking about Sex with Patricia Rich21 Apr 202300:52:48

On today's episode I chat with Patricia Rich. This is her 2nd appearance on the podcast. The first was entitled Self-Led Sexuality and that is what we talk about today- which involves a whole lot more then you may think.

I appreciate Patty inviting us over and over again to check in with our parts as we talk, knowing we are covering sensitive topics. We also have a lot of laughter and distracted parts.

My favorite thing Patty says is towards the end where she talks about the 6 S's of sexuality (which she covers in the first episode in detail). She asks us to consider what is between us and certain S words.

I encourage you to consider this idea and be with all the parts who may come up as you listen.

Patty is a Certified IFS Therapist and Approved Consultant and an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Supervisor. She has developed a unique integrative model for helping people to feel more ease, joy and confidence in the realm of sexuality and has originated IFS-informed concepts such as Internal Consent and The Six S’s of Sexual Self-Energy. Patty has presented at the IFS Annual Conference, taught a module for the IFS Institute Online Continuity program, and led workshops internationally.

She offers training and consultation to professionals and offers opportunities to BeHold and Lead your Internal Sexual Systems (BLISS). She lives in the Philadelphia area where she also has a private practice. You can learn more about her offerings at www.patriciarich.com and follow her on Instagram at @patriciarichconsulting.

IFS and Healing with Psychedelics with Nancy Morgan07 Apr 202300:54:36

On today's podcast I talk with Dr. Nancy Morgan, Certified IFS Therapist. Nancy wrote the IFS and Psychedelic chapter in the new upcoming book, "Altogether Us" which will be released around August 2023.

I spoke with Nancy on episode 47 when we focused her role as Director of LifeMoves Behavioral Health and Training Programs, a California agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. Nancy introduced IFS into the training curriculum during the 2015-2016 year.

Today, we have a much different discussion. You may be here because you love Nancy and want to know and hear how she is and what is going on with her as she was recently diagnosed with cancer. You may be here and you do not know Nancy personally or professionally, you want to know more about IFS or you want to know about psychedelics.

Whatever reason brought you to this episode I am glad you are here, and I feel incredibly honored that Nancy shares her heart and story with us.

The first half of this episode is heavier around the history of psychedelics and the integration with IFS. Nancy shares more of her story in the second half, although it is weaved throughout.

I start recording as soon as I meet with each guest, and most of that beginning matter is edited out. I decided to leave our entire conversation just as it is.

You can find out more about Nancy here:
