The Oncology Journal Club - Delivering Oncology News Differently

The Oncology Podcast, part of The Oncology Network, is proud to present Episode 3 in the second series of The Oncology Journal Club Podcast.

Dr Kate Clarke explores a clinical conundrum with the latest insights on neo-adjuvant immunotherapy for DMMR, MSI-high GI cancers, discussed with the clarity and depth you've come to expect from our team. For Professor Craig Underhill's main paper segment, Dr. Ashray Gunjur drops by to discuss the microbiome's predictive power in immunotherapy responses, Professor Christopher Jackson delves into the OPRA study's latest findings on chemo-radiotherapy sequencing for rectal cancer, bringing to light the pivotal role of patient-centred discussions.

In Quick Bites, the discussion hits home with the three S's—sitting, shitting, and sex—and their profound impact on post-cancer quality of life. Highlighting the importance of comprehensive support systems in these often-overlooked areas, we also dissect the worrying trend of early-onset colorectal cancer and its broader implications. With a review of a study about the duration of immunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer, this episode promises to fuel ongoing debates on treatment duration and patient outcomes, highlighting our commitment to keeping you at the forefront of oncology discourse.

The conversation takes a crucial turn as we tackle the uncomfortable yet necessary topic of presenting unfunded treatment options in oncology, exposing the delicate balance healthcare professionals must maintain in an era marked by scarce resources and rising demands.

The Oncology Journal Club - Delivering Oncology News Differently

The Oncology Podcast, brought to you by Oncology News Australia, is proud to present Episode 24 in our series The Oncology Journal Club.

Hans Prenen gets us started with the PRODIGE 7 trial and a comparative study on colorectal cancer mortality in young adults which interestingly is rising USA, Canada and Australia, but not in Europe and Asia.

Eva Segelov gives us insight into delays with the development of a model to estimate the association between delay in cancer treatment and local tumor control and the risk of metastases and sets Craig Underhill a homework task on fractals.

We’ve given Craig a break from main papers this week after last week’s epic episode on ASCO GI which I highly recommend you listen to, if you’ve not already.

Our Quick Bites are a must listen too this week… everyone has something fascinating to share. Where else will you hear about colorectal cancer cells entering a diapause-like DTP state – aka hibernation, tweetations and the public disclosure of identifiable patient information by health professionals on twitter, surveillance mammography for older patients, why Albury is called Smallbury, an Australian study on late mortality in people with cancer and saddle sores among female competitive cyclists.

With the usual top quality banter, papers you won’t hear of anywhere else and expert analysis from our Hosts, you are in for another great episode of The Oncology Journal Club!

The Oncology Journal Club - Delivering Oncology News Differently

The Oncology Podcast, brought to you by Oncology News Australia, is proud to present Episode 9 in our series The Oncology Journal Club.

The C Word: COVID-19 Special Edition with Professor Raina MacIntyre

As regular listeners will know, our hosts Eva Segelov, Craig Underhill and Hans Prenen have resisted an episode on COVID-19 because like the rest of Australia, they hoped we had escaped the worse of the pandemic. However in the last couple of weeks the situation has become much more difficult in Victoria, and dire in some places, particularly in nursing homes. We felt it was time for a special episode to bring you up to date with the latest literature on COVID-19 and cancer.

Our format is a little different this week as Professor Eva Segelov gets us started with a very special interview with Professor Raina MacIntyre, one of the world leading authorities on pandemics who shares some important insights on COVID-19. Raina and Eva's discussion is wide-ranging, covering healthcare worker infections, vaccines, mask wearing, 'Super-Spreaders' and much more.

Improving Identification of Aggressive versus Slow Growing Prostate Cancer21 Apr 202000:14:17

Send us a text

In this week's episode Rachael Babin from Oncology News Australia talks with Associate Professor Matt Naylor about his research on identifying aggressive prostate cancer and his role as a Research Integrity Advisor at Sydney University.

Matt and his team have shown that levels of the gene CBFβ are increased during prostate cancer and when they stop the gene from working, tumour growth and spread is dramatically reduced. In his latest project, Matt's team will investigate exactly how CBFβ functions and determine if levels of the gene can be used as a marker to predict if a patient will have an aggressive or slow growing form of prostate cancer.
