Welcome to episode 423 of The OCD and Anxiety Podcast, where we delve into the challenges of living with OCD and anxiety. In this episode, host Robert James draws inspiration from a stormy day and a classic children's story, "The Mousehole Cat," to explore the importance of finding hope amidst the turmoil of OCD.

Robert discusses how the stormy seas of OCD can often feel overwhelming, much like the tempest faced by the fisherman in the story. He emphasizes the need to recognize when to brave the storm and when to seek shelter, advocating for self-compassion and patience during difficult times.

Through the lens of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Robert explains how focusing on values and maintaining hope can empower individuals to navigate their way back to calm waters. He encourages listeners to be kind to themselves, to wait out the storm, and to have faith that better days will come.

Join us as we explore practical strategies for managing OCD and anxiety, and learn how to cultivate resilience and hope in the face of life's inevitable storms.

OCD can sometimes make us question if there is a part of us that is against us. In my experience this is not true and whilst we have an inner critic that likes to focus on doubts and uncertainties, I don't think it's helpful to believe there is a part of us that is against us.

That being said, if we aren't careful our negative thoughts can hold us back. With that in mind today's episode is about recognising the inner critic so that we can call out unhelpful thoughts and focus our attention on mor helpful things.

Today I discuss whether or not OCD in all of its various types and flavours actually has ´cross over´ elements that all people who struggle with it will recognise. Sometimes we can feel so alone in our struggles as we may think that nobody understand 'my' specific OCD.

Although in some ways this could be true, nobody can truly understand your exact experience, but it could also be argued that there are many things that all people with OCD experience and today's podcast is all about shining a light on those similarities. I hope you enjoy & find it helpful.

By exploring the idea that our efforts to control and seek certainty are at the core of OCD, Robert offers insights into how letting go and embracing uncertainty can be more beneficial. Drawing inspiration from a quote by Carl Jung, he uses the analogy of a stormy ocean to illustrate the importance of finding calm beneath the turbulent surface of obsessive thoughts.

Unfortunately a lot of people simply do not have empathy for OCD, they just can't or won't understand it. In my experience, wasting time on why this is, is not helpful and it's much better to seek out people who do understand or who are at the very least willing to learn about OCD.

This doesn't mean that people who don't understand OCD are bad, it's just that it might be better to share about your OCD experiences with people who truly understand it, like a therapist, family member who gets it, trusted friends or other people you know who might struggle with similar things.

I hope you find it helpful :)

Today's episode is all about OCD & trust. When things started to change for me with OCD it's because I started to trust that things would work out ok in the end, that life has a plan and if I try to control and manipulate that too much, then I will continue to run into problems.

In my experience entrusting is learning to let go of control and to step out into the unknown, in doing so we realise that we are far more resourceful and competent than we perhaps give ourselves credit for.

Psychiatrist and researcher Dr Dan Siegel use a hand model of the brain to try to simplify and teach about the brains structures. Building on this, today I discuss the three basic levels of the brain, the brain stem or reptile brain, the mammalian brain or limbic system and the pre frontal cortex and how I believe they relate to some of the problems we face with OCD. Today’s podcast is about psychedelics and in particular ketamine. We discuss their potential for therapeutic benefits for mental health challenges such as PTSD anxiety and of course OCD. In recent times, there has been a renaissance of interest in psychedelics with many studies reportedly finding huge benefits for mental health.

With this in mind I wanted to explore the topic a little on the podcast, but I also wanted to point out that this is by no means an endorsement of these substances for OCD or for any other reason. Many of these substances are ilegal, depending on which country you reside in and they can also be potentially very dangerous, particuarly if used irresponsibly. If you are going to experiment with these substances then make sure you do so under medical supervision.

A lot of research is currently being undertaken to try to understand more about spychadelics, but it’s my personal view as of April 2023 that OCD is best overcome through traditional approaches of therapy and exposure work, doing the hard work which tends to bring the change people are looking for.

That being said I am delighted to have Christi Meyers onto the podcast to discuss psychedelics and more specifically ketamine and how they may be of help to people struggling with mental health.

Christi Myers founded Flow Integrative in 2020 with a mission to normalize psychedelic therapies for growth, symptom reduction and overall wellness for all. Christi recognizes the global mental health crisis and has a clear vision to “help the help” by providing supportive services for front-line workers and service men and women who face chronic and complex trauma in their line of work.

To aid her mission, Christi partnered with Enthea, making Flow Integrative the Flagship for the World's first benefit plan administrator working to facilitate employee psychedelic healthcare coverage.

Christi whole-heartedly believes that there is a better way to treat mental afflictions outside of traditional antidepressants or medications that act more as a temporary avoidance or dismissal of our emotions rather than a cure.

You can find out more about Christi and her work here: https://flowintegrativeketamine.com/
