| Ep 60 I All About Functional Testing I Hormone, Stool, Genomic & Hair Testing for Complex Health Issues | Functional Testing in Naturopathy: When It Helps, When It’s Optional, and Why Context Matters | 09 Mar 2026 | 00:41:13 | |
Today we discuss the benefits and limits of functional testing, emphasizing patient-centred, tailored decisions rather than blanket protocols, especially given cost and the value of thorough history, case taking, and clinical exams. We explain that tests are snapshots in time, results can be delayed, and fundamentals like sleep, circadian rhythm, hydration, nutrition, and nervous system regulation can be addressed while waiting, noting some supplements and diet changes can skew results. We share examples where genomic testing clarified B-vitamin needs, and where hair mineral analysis plus gut and organic acids testing revealed toxic copper driving mineral transport issues. We contrast comprehensive testing with GP panels, detailing the DUTCH test’s broader hormone, metabolite, toxin, cortisol, and melatonin insights and the importance of timing hormone testing seven days post-ovulation. They also outline advanced stool testing methods and markers, discuss celiac-related findings, and frame genetic risk as modifiable by environment. | Ep 59 I Testing 101 I The Pros & Cons of Blood Tests, Bone Scans & More | Getting Accurate Blood Tests | How Naturopaths Look at Blood Tests Differently | 03 Mar 2026 | 00:40:12
Julie and Karinda explain how many GPs primarily flag only results outside reference ranges to identify frank disease states, while they also use functional/optimal ranges and compare multiple markers over time using historical results to spot trends and support prevention. They outline practical factors that can skew blood tests—fasting too long (aim ~10 hours; avoid >12), exercising (even up to 48 hours prior), stress, illness/recovery, dehydration, and timing/queues — encouraging consistency across tests, including seasonality. They discuss Australia’s Medicare limits influencing GP test ordering and note naturopaths can arrange private tests. Other GP-aligned testing covered includes coronary artery calcium scoring for cardiovascular risk and DEXA/bone testing (including an ultrasound option with fragility scoring), plus concerns about medication side effects and interactions. In this episode of the Nuanced Naturopaths, we explore the often misunderstood condition of lipedema. We discuss its symptoms, how it differs from lymphedema (which it's often confused with) and the importance of hormones, especially estrogen, in its development. We highlight the role of chronic inflammation, the unique characteristics of lipedema fat, and how it resists conventional weight loss methods. Plus, we delve into holistic, naturopathic treatments, including diet, herbal remedies, stress management, and the critical role of circadian rhythm (surprise, surprise!) in managing this condition. ~ MENTIONED IN THIS EP:

*CORRECTION: At 18:59, we start talking about nasal "turbicles". We say this word a lot. We get excited, and even question if "turbicles" is the right word, before agreeing that it's the right word, and carrying on. Future editing Karinda realises we in fact meant to say "nasal turbinates" - not turbicles. Turbicles aren't a thing. You're cordially invited to laugh at our mistake. You can suss out what these look like and their function here IN THIS EP: We dive deep into the practice of mouth taping and its impressive benefits for sleep quality and overall health. We go through our personal experiences with mouth taping, different types of tapes, and address common concerns and misconceptions (we get it, it seems odd at first, or scary at most!). Let's explore the link between nasal breathing, nitric oxide production, and improved oxygenation and recovery, and how mouth taping can aid in reducing snoring and sleep apnea. As always, you'll get a mix of science, personal anecdotes, tidbits of advice and a good ole laugh. MOUTH TAPE WE USE:

| Ep 42 | Tackling the Topic of Weight | The Science of Fat and Nuance of Body Weight | 15 Oct 2024 | 01:00:31 | |
In this episode we look at the nuance in the discussion around fat, and obesity and what it means in terms of health. You literally can’t judge a book by its chunky cover, nor can you decide that a skinny ‘book’ is healthy either. This episode reveals the tip of the iceberg in the discussion about body weight, fat gain, fat loss and what we, as a society, think about it. We uncover nuance in the terminology of the adipostat (body weight set point), obesogens, lipedema, the recent change to the food landscape and a holistic look at the meaning of health. **Correction: When talking about fatty liver Julie said ‘visceral fat within the liver’ when meant to use the term ‘ectopic fat’. Check out this new article "Obese and Healthy" which summarises our points in this episode. Further nuance: We open the can of worms that is excess body fat to examine the nuance around using body size to determine one's state of health. We are not saying that carrying excess body fat is innately healthy - but, nor is it always unhealthy! Nor is it a direct product of food and lifestyle choices, necessarily. Medical practitioners, gym instructors, and the general public often look at body weight as a ‘one size fits all’ determinant of health and can unfairly apply judgement, or in some cases diagnoses, or other assumptions inappropriately. The resulting guilt and shame can be arguably more damaging than the cardiometabolic implications that excess fat sometimes carries. Equally, overlooking these risk factors in people of slimmer build can be dangerous, being thin or even athletic does not guarantee good overall health. This episode is only the tip of the iceberg in the discussion about body weight, fat gain, fat loss and what we, as a society, think about it. ~ Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here! In this episode, we delve into the complex and often misunderstood topic of menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). We explore the nuances of menopause and perimenopause, the evolving conversations around it, and the physical and emotional challenges women face during this natural transition. We discuss the controversial history of HRT, including the flawed Women's Health Initiative and Million Women Study that led to a drastic reduction in HRT prescriptions. We also touch on the recent removal of the black box warning on HRT products in the US and what this means for women considering these therapies. The importance of distinguishing between synthetic progestins and bioidentical hormones is emphasized, alongside the need for personalized, holistic approaches to manage menopausal symptoms. We invite you to contemplate the potential gifts of menopause and advocate for a balance between natural health practices and medical interventions. Join us for an in-depth, nuanced conversation that aims to empower women navigating this significant life stage. | Ep 36 | Depression & Complex Trauma: Exploring a potential root cause of depression | Our relationship with depression, childhood, nervous system dysregulation | 26 May 2024 | 00:26:18
Please practice self-responsibility when consuming media that contains themes which could negatively impact your mental health or emotional balance. We discuss depression & childhood trauma in this episode. If you choose to listen, please ensure you have tools and resources at-the-ready to help regulate yourself. Helpful resources & links below. Karinda heard something about depression (and trauma) on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast interviewing Tim Fletcher, made a post about it, and Julie reacts in real-time to this perspective. As naturopaths, we’re passionate about getting to the root of symptoms, so when we heard the idea of depression as a means of “slowing down” your nervous system, activating your rest-digest-restore healing mechanisms, we had to talk about it. Julie graciously reads out Karinda’s caption, which includes some of her own history with nervous system dysregulation, trauma and depression. LINKS:

But it's not as simple as "it's from a plant, so it's good for you!". Plus, we cover a little bit about the microbiota & gut health... because... how could we not? MENTIONED IN THE EP:

| Ep 22 | The Healing Power of Nature, Birdsong & Deep Listening with Andrew Skeoch | 18 Oct 2023 | 01:27:24 | |
This episode marks our first outdoor recording experience, with nature sounds delightfully interrupting the conversation. We chat to nature sound recordist & author, Andrew Skeoch, about ‘deep listening to nature’ (also the title of his fabulous new book) and how to do it. We talk about how listening to the sounds around us can connect us with the landscape, calm our mind and body, and remind us that we are animals after all. This discussion took us in many directions we didn't anticipate, but were delighted to land in nonetheless. We thoroughly enjoyed Andrew's knowledge coming through as he identifies various bird's chirping in. We hope you enjoy this rich, nuanced conversation immersed in nature. CONNECT WITH ANDREW

| YOU'RE INVITED! Julie's VicHerbs Talk | Traditional Balinese Medicine & Jamu Tastings | 19 Jun 2023 | 00:01:56 | |
Or you can pay cash at the door & receive your student or NHAA member discounts. Julie’s VicHerbs debut. With 2 trips to Bali this year already, Julie was fascinated to learn about the local traditional medicines and fell in love with Jamu (which is both a drink and a system of medicine). Not claiming to be an expert, she would like to share her observations and insights into the herbal medicine of Bali, specific herbs and their uses. We can learn a lot from the beautiful Balinese people and how their connections to culture, herbal medicine, nature and spirituality permeate and intersect every part of their lives. Prepare for a deep dive into (the many) turmerics and gingers, tamarind and ‘fart leaf’... and more, how their cultural beliefs and practices help to reduce stress and the blurred lines between food and medicine. There will be a herbal handout, and freshly made tastings of the amazing turmeric and ginger drink-based tonic, Jamu on the night! WHERE: Bargoonga Nganjin North Fitzroy Library WHEN: This Thursday, 22nd June @ 7:30pm We'd love to see you there!
| Ep 11 | Attachment to Health Labels & Diagnoses: The Link to Shame, Guilt & Mental Health [Minisode] | 13 Jun 2023 | 00:13:51 | |
Come see Julie's talk for VicHerbs next Thursday, all about Balinese herbal medicine! Including Jamu taste testing! Tickets available here, or cash-only tickets at the door. 22nd June at 7:30pm in North Fitzroy. Inspired by a casual cafe chat pre-recording, Julie & Karinda dive into the potentially controversial topic of how we relate to labels when it comes to health (namely, diagnostic labels). Why do we attach to labels? Is it helpful, harmful or somewhere in between? And what does shame have to do with receiving a diagnosis? We cover it all in this minisode snippet of the Nuanced Naturopaths. Connect with Julie: Connect with Karinda:
