Happy New Year all! We hope you got all the videogames you wanted and most importantly some well earned time to enjoy them! We certainly did, in the gift of Machine Games' remarkable Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which really didn't need to be anywhere near as good as it turned out in the end. So good in fact to receive full honours from at least one of us in our regular games of the year segment as is tradition.

We also go over the big winners from the recent Game Awards show just before Christmas, as well as a detailed analysis of the big announcements. We'll be back in 12 months to see how right we were about the success or indeed, actual release, of said phenomena. Hopefully with less technical gremlins this time, which I shall leave for you, dear listener, to discover and enjoy in this most festive #NOTplaying Podcast!

After that disaster-piece of an episode last time around, we thought we'd try super hard to make this one a success, it could be argued even, that we overcompensated. Rob even took one for the team and shelled out an exorbitant sum for a PS5 Pro just to make up for it. He's even had to play Star: Wars: Outlaws in it's newly patched 60FPS + DLC glory. Oh and the new Dragon Age. It's been a tough old time. It really has.

And then there's poor old Marcus, with his time on the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta only for it to be taken away until it's proper release date early next year, at least Will was man enough to tackle S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 - Heart of Chornobyl.

When the original Deus Ex came out in 2000 it blew the doors off player choice and expression in first person video-games. The series stumbled somewhat in the follow-up, Invisible War, but was redeemed with Eidos Montreal's Human Revolution in 2011. 5 years later, the inevitable fourth instalment, Mankind Divided arrives after some much maligned pre-order incentives and a sea of controversy over micro-transactions and dubious metaphorical parallels in game's plot. At the time of writing Patrick has actually received his HTC Vive, but at the time of recording both headsets were suffering from problematic launches. The Oculus Rift isn't expected to arrive for most people until the end of May/early June, so this has given all of us plenty of time to reassess our decisions on which headset we want, or if we even want one at all. Perhaps it might even be worth sitting on the fence until Sony release their Playstation VR, cos if anyone knows how to launch a cutting edge technology product it's them right? 2016 is off to a fine start with these two sublime independent releases. Last week we gave you our belated predictions on how much the consumer-ready Oculus Rift would cost at launch at and how much we would be willing to pay for it. We won't blow our trumpets too hard, but suffice it to say that pre-orders have been made ;) Will we keep them though? HTC Vive pre-orders begin on Feb 29th, a good month before Oculus starts shipping, so it's seems perfectly possible to switch should Valve's hardware seem a more attractive proposition. Or we could just wait for Sony to do their thing, because from an install base/barrier to entry point of view, Playstation VR could easily clean up. Games games and more GAMES. That's all we're talking about this week simply because that's all we have time for, aside from perhaps a quick update on the whole Microsoft Activision saga, which likely will continue to rage on for the rest of 2023.

Like I just said though, there's no time for that though on a episode that features likely more than one GOTY contender and there can be no more likely candidate than the 20th entry in Nintendo's storied Zelda franchise, which builds on the previous game, Breath of the Wild in some unique and interesting ways. The same could be said for Respawn's second Jedi game, unlike Capcom's new Street Fighter game, which is arguably it's most unhinged version to date.

Anyway, I barely have time to continue typing this now. I have Zonai devices to catch... or something.

2015 will no doubt go down in history as the year of the Open World Videogame. It's fitting then, that Avalanche would squeeze a second sandbox adventure out right at the end of an already jam-packed holiday line-up.
