Episode 384 - Sacred Attachment with Michael Cusick03 Jul 202501:07:35
What happens when our lived experience doesn’t align with what we believe about God? How do we hold on to faith when trauma, suffering, or loss shatters our spiritual foundation? Author and counselor Michael Cusick understands this tension intimately. As a survivor of childhood abuse, Michael found himself caught in self-destructive cycles that threatened his soul and relationships. Yet through his own healing journey, he discovered the profound impact our personal stories have on our attachment to God — and how restoring that attachment can transform our lives. Now, through his intensive counseling work at Restoring the Soul and in his new book, **Sacred Attachment: Escaping Spiritual Exhaustion and Trusting in Divine Love**, Michael helps others reconnect with a God who is both safe and loving — even in the wake of deep wounds. In this thoughtful conversation, Davey and Michael talk about what to do when your relationship with God feels fractured, why attachment is so important spiritually speaking, and why it seems like so many leaders are falling in our generation. If you've struggled in your relationship with God because of the pain you have experienced, this episode is an invitation to begin healing, to rebuild trust, and to rediscover a sacred attachment with the One who will never let us go. Episode 383 - Helping Kids Overcome After Trauma with Science and Scripture with Dr. Nicole Wilke26 Jun 202501:20:05
How do we help kids build resilience, especially after facing trauma? How do we teach kids the skills they need to persevere after pain?Dr. Nicole Wilke had a front-row seat to the impact trauma can have on a child's development. Her parents had a heart for kids with the hardest stories and welcomed seventy children through foster care and adoption. This experience had a profound impact on Dr. Wilke as she watched her siblings grow and struggle after experiencing pain. It was out of her own experience that she was drawn to the work she does now through the Christian Alliance for Orphans Research Center, where she is on the front lines of discovering how we can best help kids who have experienced difficult things find a way forward. Her latest book, which she co-authored—**Overcoming: What Scripture and Science Say About Resilience**—offers practical wisdom backed by science to help kids take whatever challenges they are facing and use them as fuel to build resilience that will carry them throughout their lives. In this episode, Davey talks with Dr. Wilke about how God is in the business of redeeming our kids' stories of difficulty, why our vision matters when it comes to the trauma kids experience, and how to build a child's resilience so that they can move forward through whatever may come.If you are a parent or love a child who has experienced challenges and difficulties due to trauma or pain, this conversation will encourage you that God can take the most painful moments and use them in our kids' lives so that they can become resilient overcomers. Episode 374 - Overcoming Shame from Hidden Secrets with Anne Beiler23 Apr 202501:11:37
What do we do with the secrets that keep us hidden in shame and despair? How do we tell our story in such a way that we can experience the true freedom that God has for us?For author, entrepreneur, and founder of Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Anne Beiler, the pain that came after losing a child in a tragic accident and the abuse she experienced at the hands of someone who should have helped her in her suffering, left her despairing and empty. She shares her journey in her latest book, The Secret Lies Within: An Inside Out Look at Overcoming Trauma and Finding Purpose in the Pain. Episode 276 - Finding a Reason to Return with Ericka Andersen15 Jun 202301:15:51
Women are leaving churches in record numbers at higher rates than ever before. Yet, all of us are in need of healthy community more than ever. What is causing this mass exodus and how can the Church and women recognize their need for one another?Journalist and author Ericka Andersen wanted to know why and started to investigate the staggering statistics. In turn, she found the deeper reasons such a vital part of the body of Christ was finding its way to the exit. She offers an explanation of why this is happening plus an encouraging call for women to reengage in the Church in her book, Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women. There she encourages women to see not only their need for Christ-centered community, but also the Church's need for the unique gifts of women. In it, she also shares her personal journey with alcoholism and how the Church played such a vital role in her own healing. In this episode, Davey sits down with Ericka to discuss how women are leaving the Church at faster rates than ever before, how the anger of those who leave is often not against God, and why it is so important to go first and create a safe space for people to share their stories with vulnerability. If you've found yourself ready to quit the Church because of the wounds that people have inflicted upon your or if you've left Church and don't know how to take the first step back towards community, this conversation will encourage you that even in its brokenness, the people of God are an integral part of our lives of faith.   Website: https://erickaandersen.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ericka_andersen/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ErickaAndersenSylvester Book: Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs WomenWould you love to help those in your church partner with God to take back their stories of pain and trauma? Episode 275 - Stewarding our Sorrows Well with Tim Challies08 Jun 202301:17:05
How do we take the immense heartaches we experience and use them for God's glory? How do we continue to trust in the Lord's goodness when our experience feels quite the opposite in our pain? For author Tim Challies, losing his 20 year old son tragically and unexpectedly gave him the opportunity to lean into all he believed to be true about God as he resolved to steward his sorrow well. Through his writing of his book, Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God, Tim gave a real-time account of his grieving process and his ultimate conclusion that God was still good and the provider of comfort even in our greatest losses. His writing was not only a way for his own heart to process and heal, but it has become a beacon of hope to so many others encountering their own sorrows and pain. In this episode, Tim sits down with Aubrey to discuss what it looks like to lead our family through pain when we too are enduring it, how writing can be a helpful part of healing and the importance of knowing our true identity in the face of our losses.Losing a child is an agonizing and heartbreaking experience and yet Tim's reminder to all of us, whether we have known that kind of pain or not, is that God is our ultimate comfort.   Website: www.challies.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/challies Book: Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God We want to know how Nothing is Wasted has impacted YOUR story! How do you stay afloat when it feels like waves of grief and trauma keep crashing over you? How can you keep a marriage together when it feels like everything is trying to tear you apart? For Jeff and Sarah Walton, navigating the relentless storms of a child's neurological challenges, losing a job, and the impact of Lyme disease in their home seemed impossible. It felt like the story of Job where every aspect of their lives were touched by pain and suffering. Episode 273 - When God Seems Gone with Adam Mabry25 May 202301:14:29
What do you do when you have a good theology of suffering and pain and yet struggle in the midst of your experience to believe that God is even present, let alone good? How do you hold the tension between your pain and what you know to be true about who God is? For Pastor Adam Mabry, it was his own hardships and emotional struggles paired with the seeming silence of God that took him on a journey to reconcile his experience with God's character. He would go on to write about it in his book, When God Seems Gone: Finding Hope When Nothing Makes Sense. In the end, Adam concludes that there is hope in the messy middle of our story if we are willing to be honest with God and ourselves about what we are feeling. In this impactful conversation, Davey sits down with Adam to discuss how you can know good theology and yet struggle with internalizing the truth in your pain, the difference between God's will and God's disposition, and why it's important to become curious about our emotions instead of escaping them. If you've ever felt like God disappeared when you needed Him the most, this episode will remind you that there is hope when nothing makes sense.   Website: www.adammabry.org Instagram: www.instagram.com/theadammabry Facebook: www.facebook.com/pastoradammabryBook: When God Seems Gone: Finding Hope When Nothing Makes SenseGet 25% off of Adam's book When God Seems Gone at thegoodbook.com with code the code: NIWHave a friend who is walking through something difficult? Episode 272 - The Power of Discipleship with Preston Perry18 May 202301:26:37
What does it look like to grow in your faith when you came from an environment that contradicted so many of the things of God? How do you become a follower of Jesus after experiencing a childhood riddled with so much trauma and pain? For Preston Perry, growing up in the inner city and facing so many challenges from being fatherless and the collective pain of a community in crisis, Preston struggled to truly know God. As a young person, he found himself entrenched in street life, dealing drugs and watching so many around him succumb to the ills of gangs and crime. It was through being discipled by a friend who grew up in a similar environment and yet was so different from the life they both knew, that God became real to him. The power of that relationship was pivotal in changing Preston's life and leading him to Christ. Since then, Preston and his wife, Jackie, have devoted their lives to ministry. Preston is a speaker and apologist who has been able to take his experiences and speak to people who grew up in a similar context as he did as well as widen the Evangelical Christian perspective on topics like justice. In this episode, Davey sits down with Preston to discuss how our environment can shape our worldview, the way to reach those in communities that are different than our own, the power of discipleship in leading others to Jesus and how to fight for holiness in marriage after stories of trauma. Even if your life experiences are different, Preston's story is such a profound reminder of God's power in all of our pain and mess and how redemption can come after our trauma.   Website: https://withtheperrys.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/preston_n_perry/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/prestonperrythepoet Twitter: https://twitter.com/Preston_n_Perry Want to learn more about Pain to Purpose? Episode 271 - Experiencing the Comfort of God after Loss and Trauma with Rachel Faulkner Brown11 May 202301:50:31
How do you continue on in faith when pain and tragedy seems to plague your life? How can you keep going towards healing and wholeness when heartache relentlessly comes into your life? Those were the questions Rachel Faulkner Brown had to wrestle with after losing not one, but two husbands: one in an unexpected medical trauma and the other in a military plane crash. As a young widow twice, Rachel knew what it meant to experience pain, but learning to experience God's comfort took some time. It took her truly understanding God's abundant love for her, even when her circumstances felt quite the opposite. Since experiencing those losses, she has since remarried again and has walked with her husband through depression and anxiety and started a ministry for widows, encouraging them to hope in their pain to purpose journey. Through it all, Rachel has found a rich faith that is rooted in trusting Jesus in every season of life. While it has never been easy, it has been what has carried her through the valleys she has encountered. In this episode, Davey sits down with Rachel to discuss the importance of knowing our identity and God's love for us before we can ever begin to heal, how our worship can become a weapon against the enemy, and the power of encountering God's comfort in our pain. Chances are you haven't experienced the level of loss and pain that Rachel has, but this conversation will spur you on in your journey towards faith and hope in whatever hurt you are enduring.   Website: www.rachelfaulknerbrown.net www.bestillministries.net Instagram: www.instagram.com/rachelfaulknerbrown www.instagram.com/neveralonewidows Want to find out how you too can remove the debris of crisis in your life and move forward with a renewed sense of victory and purpose? Episode 270 - Loving Well through the Pain of Addiction with Geoffrey and James Banks04 May 202301:44:36
Have you ever watched someone you love struggle through addiction? Or perhaps you were the one with an addiction and saw the devastating impact it had on those who loved you most? How do you heal, on either side of an addiction? For Geoffrey Banks, a youthful curiosity turned into years long struggle with drug addiction while his father, James, endured the pain of watching his son walk through so much self-inflicted pain. Now, years later, Geoffrey is sober and has followed his father's footsteps into ministry. Both serve as pastors and they've taken their heartbreaking journey through the pain of addiction and shared their story with others who are on a similar path, either as the adult child or the parent. Together, they shared what they've walked through in their book, Hope Lies Ahead: Encouragement for Parents of Prodigals from a Family that’s Been There. Addiction can feel relentless with one step forward and three steps back, but Geoffrey and James prove that through Christ true healing can come. In this episode, Davey talks with Geoffrey and James about the spiritual warfare that can take place amidst addictive struggles, how to love well those who wrestle with addiction, how our journey with Jesus doesn't always look neat and tidy, and the role identity can play in our pain and our healing. Whether you've walked through an addiction or know someone who has, this conversation will remind you that even when things seem bleak, hope can restore even the most broken stories.   Website: www.jamesbanks.org Instagram: www.instagram.com/encouragingprayerwww.instagram.com/geoffreyjbanksy Facebook: www.facebook.com/drjamesbanksBook: Hope Lies Ahead: Encouragement for Parents of Prodigals from a Family that’s Been There Want to see healing and life transformation after the pain you've encountered? Episode 269 - How the Enneagram can Help in our Healing with Beth and Jeff McCord27 Apr 202301:39:06
How does our personality impact how we respond after a loss or heartache? Why does knowing more about our inner world matter when it comes to healing? Beth and Jeff McCord have been using the tool of the Enneagram to help countless people understand the connection between their core longings and the unhealthy ways they are showing up in the world. Using a gospel lens, they have found the value in understanding more about the wounds we carry and the scripts we've been following that are keeping us from the abundant life Jesus promises. Centering on the way in which Christ longs to meet our needs and heal our pain, the McCords offer practical wisdom when it comes to seeing how a deep dive into our personality can bring greater understanding of not only ourselves, but others. In this conversation, Davey and the McCords talk about how we can find God's truth in the tools that are out there, the way in which understanding ourselves can help us navigate our relationships and our trauma, and what God's Word says about our identity. Episode 373 - Embracing a Gospel Vision in Racial Healing and Justice with Dr. Sarita Lyons16 Apr 202501:10:27
How do we, no matter what our cultural lens may be, embrace a gospel vision in conversations around racial healing and justice? How do we root our understanding of our own experiences in the truth of Christ? Author, speaker, Bible teacher and counselor Dr. Sarita Lyons has been seeking the answer to these questions as she walks besides those in her church and local community and as she helps the broader Church have conversations around race, identity, and how we can heal individually and collectively. In her new book, Church Girl: A Gospel Vision to Encourage and Challenge Black Christian Women, she explores what it looks like for Black Women to find their identity in Christ, heal from the hurt of racism and other pain, and how to flourish in faith with integrity and conviction. And yet, her message is for all--that when we begin to allow believers in Christ to share their hurt, their pain, their struggles, and their challenges, we can learn ways to love one another better. In this thought-provoking episode, Davey and Dr. Lyons talk about how the power of the Gospel and our Christianity is meant to inform all areas of our lives, what we can do when we recognize feelings of prejudice or racism in ourselves, and why proximity to others who don't look like us is so important as we heal the racial divide in our churches and communities. If you've ever wondered where the Gospel intersects in the conversation about racial healing and justice or if you've found yourself wrestling with feelings of prejudice or racism towards others, this episode will encourage you to see these topics through Christ and be a part of the healing and hope that we need more than ever in this generation. Episode 266 - Addressing the Spiritual Roots of Depression and Anxiety with Dr. Michelle Bengtson06 Apr 202301:19:32
You can be doing everything "right" and still find yourself struggling in the grips of depression and anxiety. The fact remains that depression and anxiety are indiscriminate when it comes to who will encounter it. How can you get to the spiritual root of what you are facing and experience freedom in the pit of pain? As a clinical neuropsychologist, Dr. Michelle Bengtson thought she had every tool anyone could ever need when it came to mental health. And yet, when her own story plunged her into the depths of depression and anxiety, she found herself at a loss. Post-partum depression and anxiety left her searching for tools from her tool box that weren't working like she thought they would. It wasn't until the Lord encouraged her to deal with the spiritual root of some of her pain that she finally found a way forward. Together, they have done the important work of healing their own wounds and stories while recognizing what they needed to let go of in order to be healthy leaders of Bright City Church in Durham, NC. In this honest conversation, Ike and Sharon talk with Aubrey about how to lead in a divisive climate, what happens when we reach for control as leaders, and the importance of boundaries in marriage when we lead together. Episode 263 - Breath as Prayer with Jenn Tucker16 Mar 202301:23:31
What do you do when you're overcome with anxiety? How can we connect our faith with our physical and mental health? These are questions that Jenn Tucker began to ask after first walking her young daughter through anxiety and panic attacks, only to discover she herself was dealing with anxiety as well. As Jenn was on the journey of having a child who was struggling with both mental health challenges as well as a physical one, she started to recognize how little control she had in her world. What was often covered up under the guise of perfectionism and planning was soon recognized as her own deep seated anxiety. It wasn't until Jenn learned the spiritual discipline of breath prayer that she began to feel the peace and comfort of God, even when circumstances didn't completely change. It is through breath prayer that Jenn was able to learn to calm her body and soul and a tool God gave her as she continued to trust Him in her story. In this conversation, Davey talks with Jenn about how we can often wrestle with the shame of perfectionism and control, why empathy grows out of our own struggles and the way that trusting God through our very breath and our prayer can be the way through whatever we are facing. If you or someone you love have ever suffered from anxiety, this episode will give you both a practical way to find healing and the hope to keep going when life doesn't seem to go as planned.   Website: littlehousestudio.net/breath-as-prayer Instagram: www.instagram.com/jenn_littlehousestudio/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/TheLittleHouseStudio Book: Breath as Prayer: Calm Your Anxiety, Focus Your Mind, and Renew Your SoulWant to access all that Nothing is Wasted has to offer to help you in your healing journey? Episode 262 - Surrendering Your Plans For God’s Plans with Marcy Gregg09 Mar 202301:13:00
Imagine waking up in a hospital room and finding out that you no longer remembered the last thirteen years of your life. Think about the fear, the confusion and the uncertainty that would set in when you realized you had just been in a coma and parts of your life were no longer in your memory. Most of us have never experienced something as traumatic as that and can hardly imagine such a scene playing out in real life. But for artist Marcy Gregg, this was her story. After complications from giving birth led to her being in a coma, she awoke to a life she didn't know. Thirteen years of her memories were gone and she didn't recognize her husband or her kids. In order to be released from the hospital, she pretended that her memory was coming back. But once home, the weight of such a big secret began to overwhelm her and she turned to alcohol to cope with her anxiety and pain. Pretty soon, she found herself struggling with alcohol addiction, but through a divine intervention, the Lord spoke to her and she walked away from numbing her pain with alcohol. Her life has been met with more challenges, but through it all, she has chosen to trust God with her life and her story. Like a painting in progress, she has seen God as the ultimate artist who is not done yet with the canvas of her life. In this episode, Davey talks with Marcy about how to surrender in the face of uncertainty, choosing to live differently when life takes us on an unexpected path, and why trust requires us to lean in. Marcy's story is unique, but through it, you'll find a reminder in your own to trust God with the plan He has for your life, even when you can't see the whole picture quite yet.   Website: www.marcygreggart.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/marcygregg/ Book: Blank Canvas: The Amazing Story of a Woman Who Awoke from a Coma to a Life She Couldn’t Remember https://www.amazon.com/Blank-Canvas-Amazing-Couldnt-Remember/dp/149645037X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2KDUCPT8TRVC4&keywords=blank+canvas+book&qid=1666825865&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIyLjAzIiwicXNhIjoiMS43NiIsInFzcCI6IjEuNzcifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=blank+canvas+bo%2Caps%2C178&sr=8-3 Do you need resources to help guide you in your specific pain point? Episode 261 - Good Boundaries and Goodbyes with Lysa TerKeurst02 Mar 202300:54:45
Boundaries can feel impossible sometimes, especially if you have lived your life without them. How do you begin to draw the line when it comes to what you are willing to accept in a relationship? How do you know when it is beyond the point of healing and time to let go of a toxic relationship? Author, speaker and Bible teacher Lysa TerKeurst never dreamed that her life would look the way it does now. After finding out about her husband's infidelity, Lysa was committed to healing and restoration of her marriage. But as time went by, Lysa endured the most difficult season of her life and had to face the most difficult decision. Ultimately, her marriage ended and she was left to pick up the pieces. As she has walked the journey of healing, she has begun to see how her own inability to set boundaries contributed to the chaos in her relationship. In this episode, Lysa talks to Aubrey about how boundaries are not just a good thing but also a God thing, how to determine the amount of access someone should have in our lives and why boundaries can keep the best of who we are front and center. Episode 260 - Discovering God’s Faithfulness in our Knotted-Up Lives with Beth Moore23 Feb 202301:21:30
How can we look at our lives and see God's faithfulness throughout the knots of disappointment, betrayal, criticism or abuse? How can we trust the goodness of God when so much has gone wrong in our lives? For Bible teacher and author Beth Moore, her life has been a series of knots. From being sexually abused as a child to extreme criticism from those who proclaim Christ, Beth's life has been full of pain to untangle. But with every difficulty, every pain, Beth has seen her desperate need for Jesus even more. It has been through the twists and turns of life that she has come to realize that no person and no set of circumstances can satisfy like the love of Jesus. Openly and honestly, Beth has journeyed this path with the Lord for a lifetime to find that He is worth every step of it. In this profound conversation, Beth talks with Davey and Aubrey about how the crucible of life can bring about a fountain of deep passion for the Lord, the only way to endure criticism as a leader, and how our crushing can lead to more of the Holy Spirit in our lives. If you need encouragement from a seasoned believer to finish your race well in the midst of all that you are facing, this episode will give you the strength to keep fighting the good fight of faith. Episode 259 - Learning to Remember While Thinking Forward After Loss with Jonathan Pitts16 Feb 202301:32:04
What happens when we start to share our story of pain and loss? How can retelling what we've walked through help us in healing? For Jonathan Pitts, sharing the story of how he lost his wife, Wynter, has been a part of the process God has used to heal his greatest loss. In 2018, life was going well for Jonathan and his family. With an exciting upcoming move to the Nashville area and a new position as a pastor, Jonathan, Wynter and their four girls were excited about what was ahead. But within moments, their lives took a tragic turn that none of them could have imagined when Wynter died suddenly from a heart related issue. Just like that, Jonathan and his girls were on a new trajectory in their lives as they continued on with the move and began a completely new life without Wynter. In this episode, Davey and Jonathan talk about how so much of our healing can come as we share parts of our story, the importance of having permission to feel what we feel, and ways we can combat shame in our grief. Life has taken unexpected turns for the Pitts family as Jonathan has now remarried and pivoted in his professional life, but this conversation is a reminder that as much as life can change in an instant, God remains the same. Episode 258 - Finding God’s Freedom from Trauma with Dr. Elizabeth Stevens09 Feb 202301:19:01
Sometimes, we can try to cover up our past pain with that which we can control-achievement, performance, and productivity. But at some point, those coping mechanisms cannot mask the hurt we are feeling deep inside anymore. What do you do when what you've done to run from your past no longer works to hide what you're truly feeling? For Dr. Elizabeth (Ellie) Stevens, there came a point when what she did to keep the pain from her childhood sexual abuse at bay, no longer worked. She found that she could no longer hide behind performance and her achievements and instead had to face what was below the surface. It took another string of traumas including a sexual assault and traumatic brain injury to bring up the ache she had been ignoring, but when she did, she found that God invited her towards something new: freedom. Even when her poor decisions heaped shame on top of all she was enduring, she was able to start to experience the depth of God's love in the middle of the mess of emotions she was enduring. Now, as a psychiatrist, trauma survivor, and veteran, Dr. Stevens has taken what she has learned in her own journey to help veterans and first responders in theirs. In this conversation, Davey talks with Dr. Stevens about how we often use achievement and performance to cope with our past, the power of God shown through our weakness, and how trauma can help us move from conditional to unconditional love. If you find yourself trying to hide your past pain through achievement and performance and you are ready to experience the freedom God has for you, this episode will encourage you that God wants to release you from that which threatens to hold you back. Episode 256 - Parenting Our Kids through Trauma and Everyday Challenges with David Thomas26 Jan 202301:09:18
Perhaps one of the greatest questions that comes after trauma or tragedy is how do we help our kids navigate pain? What do we as parents need to look for after loss or in the everyday struggles that kids are facing? When do we need to bring in an expert to help and what can we do in the in between? David Thomas knows all too well the questions that emerge when families encounter crisis and the everyday difficulties plaguing our children. As a licensed counselor at Daystar Counseling in Nashville, TN, he has met with hundreds of kids and has walked with them through all sorts of challenges from trauma, grief and loss to anxiety and depression. What he has noticed in his clinical experience is that above all else, kids need parents willing to do the same emotional work of healing that they are wanting for their children. When we as parents start to look at our own stories, we can better help our children through theirs. In this practical and timely conversation, Davey sits down with David to discuss why we need to do our own work as parents, the importance of following our child's lead after pain, understanding behavior as communication as well as how to help kids navigate anxiety and technology. If you are struggling to know what to do with the pain or challenges your child is experiencing, this episode is full of helpful wisdom to help you parent well in the midst of it. Episode 372 - Walking with the One Who Is Not Worried about a Thing with Megan Fate Marshman09 Apr 202500:52:33
Theologian Dallas Willard was once asked how he would describe Jesus in just 1 word. He replied with the word: relaxed. How can we learn to walk and live like Jesus in a world that wants us to go as fast as we can? What does it look like to deeply trust and surrender when we are walking through pain? For author and pastor Megan Fate Marshman, those were hard questions to answer after losing her husband, Randy, suddenly to a heart attack. Learning to relax into Christ through the grief and loss was a challenge, but in it she learned to move at a Kingdom pace. She wrote her latest book, **Relaxed: Walking with the One Who Is Not Worried about a Thing**,as a way to help readers let go of spiritual performance and find freedom to walk towards God at a gentle pace. In this episode, Aubrey and Megan discuss how to even begin to relax in the presence of Jesus in the midst of our suffering, what it looks like to walk with kids through their grief, and what leadership looks like when we are hurting. If you find yourself caught in the wheel of doing instead of being with Jesus, this conversation will welcome you into the relaxing surrender of God's presence and the freedom to release all your cares to Him. Episode 255 - The Importance of Engaging Your Story and Trauma with Adam Young19 Jan 202301:16:02
So often, we tend to think very little about our story and how our past impacts our present. But, what if the key to healing the wounds we are experiencing now is inextricably tied to engaging our whole story including our past? For professional counselor and podcaster Adam Young, it was when he began to engage his story, the wounds of his past and his family of origin, that he started to see the ways in which God wanted to meet him in his pain. This idea of not just dealing with the symptoms of past wounds, but looking at the arc of our lives became the most important tool Adam had in his private practice with others who were wanting to heal from the past. It also connected perfectly with what we know to be true about the human brain and how it makes sense of the things that have happened to us. In this deeply profound conversation, Davey and Adam talk about why it is so important to engage our stories, the difference between trauma and adversity, how to handle people who have wounded us, and how this work can lead to healing and health in our relationships, including our closest ones like in our marriage. If you've ever wondered how to connect the dots between your earliest memories and what you are experiencing now, this episode is full of insightful wisdom on how to step into your story with compassion and curiosity. Episode 254 - When the Darkness of Postpartum Depression Doesn’t Lift with Julie Thomas12 Jan 202301:14:52
WARNING: This episode contains conversations about suicide ideation and may not be suitable for all listeners/viewers. Having a baby seems like it will be a season full of unending joy, but for many mothers, the elation of a new child can bring with it an unforeseen darkness too. Recent studies suggest one in every eight women experience postpartum depression. It can be jarring to experience the joy of new life while also enduring the pain of depression and anxiety in the wake. How do you move through the darkness into the light when it feels impossible? For Julie Thomas, she couldn't have imagined the way in which darkness would seem to take over. Well after the birth of her child, she was experiencing a depression that would not lift. It felt hopeless and isolating, so much so that she contemplated taking her own life. While her story isn't one of instantaneous healing, God taught her the slow and steady way He can heal when we turn to Him in the depths of our pain. For her, it was a combination of safe people, leaning into scripture and sharing her story with others that would eventually help the fog of depression clear. In this episode, Davey and Julie talk about what to do when you become afraid of both the darkness and the light, how to help someone through a season of depression, and why telling your story can become a catalyst towards healing. This conversation will help the one who needs hope in the most desperate of places as well as the one who wants to be a help when someone they love are suffering in the dark. And it will remind us all that no matter what difficulties we are facing, we are not alone. Episode 253 - Special Release: Vision and Purpose in Your Pain with Davey Blackburn05 Jan 202301:00:03
After tragedy, trauma or transition, it can be hard to find vision for a way forward. Often times, our pain can cloud any idea of a future or plans besides our deepest ache. How can we start to see above the fog of what has happened to us and begin to believe that God has a greater vision for our life beyond suffering? In this special release episode, Davey talks about the importance of vision when it comes to our pain to purpose journey as well as the God-given vision he has for Nothing is Wasted as a ministry. Get a glimpse into what you can expect in the days to come from Nothing is Wasted and how we can help you partner with God to take back your story. Episode 252 - Parenting Your Wayward Adult Kids with Joy with Mary DeMuth15 Dec 202201:10:05
Every parent looks into the eyes of their young child with hopeful anticipation for their future. What do you do when the dreams you had seem to shatter and you find your relationship with your child not what you had imagined? How do you continue to love well when their choices are taking them down a road of relational disconnection, personal pain or destruction? Through her own parenting journey and by watching others, Mary DeMuth has learned how to surrender her ideas of what should be and lean into what is when it comes to her children. In fact, her most recent book, Love, Pray, Listen: Parenting Your Wayward Adult Kids with Joy, is a guide to help any parent navigating the murky waters of parenting adult children who have chosen a path contrary to what was hoped for. As a sexual abuse survivor, Mary had to learn how to parent well while healing from her own story. She also had to learn to trust God in the messiness of her own children's stories and not to parent out of fear, but instead rely on God's love for her kids to be enough. By looking at Scripture and the first example of wayward children in the Garden of Eden, Mary has found comfort and solace in knowing that God not only sees her pain, but also understands the journey she is on. In this raw conversation, Mary and Davey talk about how our healing can often come through our giftings, why formulas don't work in parenting and the power of surrendering our kids and their journeys to the loving care of the Lord. No matter where you are in parenting, this episode will help you remember that ultimately God is in control of your children's lives and that no matter what, He cares for them and for you. Episode 251 - Deciding to Trust God before the Unexpected Comes with Melissa Swain09 Dec 202201:19:18
How do you prepare yourself for loss? What do you do in the days before your world encounters a seismic shift? Can you ever truly be ready to face your greatest pain? For Melissa Swain, nothing could fully prepare her for the unexpected loss of her husband, Chris, in 2021 but in the days long before such a tragic grief, she had made the decision to trust God no matter what. Just a few years before in 2019, her family faced the unexpected death of her brother, Aaron. In a way, the Lord used that difficult time to prepare her heart for more grief she would walk through as a widow. As Melissa wrestled through the pain of losing her sibling and then her husband, she was faced with more unexpected circumstances when the fate of her husband's almost finished manuscript laid in the hands of his publisher. Was she the one to take his work and bring it across the finish line? She did and the book they completed unexpectedly together called "Write it On Their Hearts: Practical Help for Discipling Your Kids" was not only a way to keep her connected to Chris after his death, but it also served as a means for him to continue to love and parent his children in the days that followed while helping other families as well. In this candid conversation, Davey talks with Melissa about what it looks like to grieve well, why our pre-decisions about God are so important when it comes to preparing us for pain, and how to wait on God when you aren't sure what is next. If you've ever wondered how you could prepare your heart for the suffering that inevitably comes this side of heaven, Melissa's hard-won wisdom will encourage you to decide who you think God is before you ever get that phone call that changes everything. Episode 249 - Cultivating an Unoffendable Heart in Ministry with Joanna Weaver24 Nov 202201:20:50
If you've ever served others in ministry, you know how quickly you can go from a thriving, joy-filled season to one in which you become a target for criticism and betrayal. How do you protect your heart when the very people you are serving hurt it? How do you navigate the wounds inflicted upon you by the people of God? As a pastor's wife, author Joanna Weaver knows all too well how deep the pain can cut from those she has served. Throughout her life-long service in women's ministry and alongside her husband in churches, she has experienced her fair share of hurt that came from people. It can be easy to wall off your heart, move away from relationship and choose to isolate. But, Joanna has found that even in those moments of relational wounding, God has important lessons to teach us in order to shape us more in the image of Christ. As we allow God to reveal parts of ourselves He longs to heal, we can grow in character and strengthen our faith to trust Him in all circumstances. In this conversation, Davey and Joanna talk about how to handle the relational wounds and betrayals of ministry, how to not waste the pain from it, and why it is so important for leaders to seek healing for their hurt. You don't have to be a leader in ministry to glean from Joanna's wise words. The truths she shares are universal for us all as we live in community and face offense of every kind. Episode 247 - Hope and Healing after Post-Traumatic Stress with Fernando Arroyo10 Nov 202201:35:10
WARNING: This episode contains conversations about suicide ideation and may not be suitable for all listeners/viewers. The statistics are staggering: twenty-two veterans die by suicide a day. After years of serving in the Army, Fernando Arroyo almost became one of those twenty-two when the pain of his experience in the military made him want to end his life. Finding hope and healing in the aftermath of war and post-traumatic stress was no easy task. The transition from a life full of meaning and purpose as a Paratrooper in the Army into the civilian sector was difficult for Fernando. He went from having a tight knit community, a brotherhood, with a common mission into a life where he felt alone and without purpose. That pain began to build as he was reminded of his past and eventually, he found himself on his couch with a gun, ready to end his life when the Lord miraculously intervened. From there, he found restored hope once he began to be open and honest about his struggles. Through sharing his story and what he was walking through, a newfound purpose emerged as he found other veterans who needed understanding and help in their own journey. Now, Fernando serves veterans at Step Forward Academy, helping them through the transition from military to civilian life and has recently written a book chronicling his journey called, The Shadow of Death: From My Battles in Fallujah to the Battle for My Soul. In this special Veteran's Day episode, Davey and Fernando talk about the difficulty for veterans to transition out of the military into the civilian world, the powerful impact that can come when we share our story, and the importance of community in our lives and our healing. Whether you are a veteran or not, this conversation will help you walk with others through the most painful parts of their stories and encourage you in sharing your own. There are moments in life where in an instant, everything changes. How do you choose joy when your whole life is blindsided by pain? How do you find hope when you don't even know what the next hour may bring? For Kelli Campbell-Goodnow, she never imagined the turn her life would take one night in January 2016. As she went to sleep, her life was good with her loving husband, United States Marine CH-53 pilot Major Shawn Campbell and her four children that she homeschooled at their dream duty station in Hawaii. But when she awoke, she got the call that every military wife fears, there had been an accident. For five days, rescue workers searched for the wreckage of a two helicopter collision off the coast. Soon thereafter, the search ended and Shawn was among the twelve Marine lives lost. Kelli would have to immediately step into a completely unknown life. She would pack up her home and move across the country to be with family. She would decide to put her kids in school instead of homeschooling. And she would remind herself that while everything around her was changing, God did not. Davey and Kelli discuss why it is important to pay attention to the small details of our stories as they unfold, the daily act of surrender that grief requires of us, and the ways we can trust God even when our lives change completely. Episode 243 - Making Your History Your Ally Instead of Your Enemy with Blake Williams20 Oct 202201:19:03
Losing a spouse is devastating. Losing a spouse to suicide is full of layers of pain and questions. How do you even begin to wrap your mind around such a traumatic event and how do you walk your children through their pain? What do you do when a new tragedy stirs up your past wounds and hurts from your childhood? Blake Williams has spent the last year navigating those questions and so many more after losing his wife, Hope, to suicide. Having wrestled with mental health issues and chronic pain, Hope took her life in the couple's home and Blake found himself in the middle of a story he had never imagined for himself or his five children. As he has started to heal and move forward, the pain was a reminder of some of the past lies that haunted him his whole life after being abandoned and rejected by his parents. Blake could have easily allowed the old scripts he so often felt in his life to become his reality, but instead, he decided to shift his perspective from that of a victim into a victor. In this transparent conversation, Davey and Blake talk about the importance of not allowing our past to dictate our future, the paradigm shift that is necessary to keep us from going under from our hurt, and the value in learning to speak truth to the lies we are believing. Episode 242 - Growing Our Soul Through Loss with Jerry Sittser13 Oct 202201:30:20
There are some stories with such unfathomable pain that it can seem impossible to ever see a glimpse of redemption throughout them. When the depth of heartbreak is so great, how can you ever see the light of goodness again? Jerry Sittser has walked a road of catastrophic loss that most of us cannot even imagine. In 1991, Jerry, his wife, mother, and children were hit head on by a drunk driver. In an instant, life as Jerry knew it was completely over as the wreck claimed the life of his wife, his young daughter, his mother and the wife and unborn child of the other driver. The lessons Jerry learned through his own grief have served as a healing balm to many through his groundbreaking book, A Grace Disguised How the Soul Grows Through Loss. Recently revised for a 25th Anniversary edition, Jerry vulnerably shared how grief has not only changed him, but grown him in ways that only suffering can. Episode 240 - Making Your Way through the Seasons of Loss with Laura Hao05 Oct 202201:35:16
What do you do when you were living the life you always dreamed of and find it taken away in a matter of moments? How do you learn to trust God after a tragic loss? How can you forgive when a grave injustice is done against you and your family? Laura Hao had to answer these questions and so many more when she lost her husband in a senseless murder in 2018. Laura had always dreamed of becoming a missionary since she was a little girl. She realized that dream and moved to Asia as a young woman. There, she met her husband, had her four children and began working as missionaries in the place the Holy Spirit had planted a seed of a dream in her heart so many years ago. Together, they experienced blessing and favor as they served the Lord and sought to build the Church in a closed part of the world. But that all changed just two days after returning to the United States for a time of refreshment and visiting loved ones. While packing her daughter's bag for camp the next day, gun shots echoed just outside the door. She opened it to find a traumatic scene, her husband was lying lifeless on the ground after being shot in a random act of violence. Laura experienced the depths of the darkness that grief can bring. Feeling buried like a seed, she felt as though she was frantically grappling her way out of the dark. But through it, she also experienced the illuminating light of truths that can only be found in the recesses of pain. In this raw conversation, Davey and Laura talk through a shared experience of learning to live in the darkness of a painful loss, how to trust the Lord in the seasons for grief, and how justice, mercy and forgiveness all coexist. The truths Laura and Davey share are ones that will help you as you navigate the most difficult parts of your story with honesty and hope, whatever it may be. Episode 239 - Meeting God in the Messiness of Grief with Esther Lee22 Sep 202201:45:23
It's every parent's worst fear to lose a child. How do you continue to trust God when you're experiencing unrelenting pain? The journey after such a tragic loss is never linear and it can be full of chaotic feelings and opposing emotions. Yet God offers us an invitation to meet Him in the messiness of grief. For Esther Lee, that invitation was often on the cold, dirty hospital bathroom floor where she cried out to the Lord so many times during her daughter, Ava's, cancer journey. And while her grief began there and continues on well after her devastating loss of sweet Ava, she has learned that the Lord graciously allows for the anger, the questions, the fears and the doubts in the messy middle of our suffering. Esther has walked a long road of first being a parent of a child with life-threatening allergies to later receiving a diagnosis that no parent wants to hear as well as the non-stop rollercoaster of doctors and hospital visits. And while her circumstances have felt impossible and her grief has been messy, God has met her in it all. Her story doesn't tie up in a neat, tidy bow when it comes to her pain, but instead, it is honest and authentic, one that allows for the raw emotions she feels while leaving room for the truth of God's goodness and kindness as she grapples her way through every parent's greatest fear. In this moving conversation, Davey sits down with Esther to talk about how vital community can be after experiencing loss, the true wrestlings that can come in regards to God's goodness in our pain, how purpose shows up in small ways instead of big oftentimes, and learning to worship when it feels hard. No matter your story, you will be able to relate to Esther's wrestlings in the messiness of heartbreak and pain and find comfort in knowing that we serve a God who is not alarmed by it when we do. Episode 238 - Healing Childhood Trauma through Horses with Kim Tschirret15 Sep 202201:17:54
According to current statistics, we are facing a crisis when it comes to mental health and our kids. With an increase in suicide rates, depression and anxiety, many kids and teens are facing so much more than they can begin to know how to handle. What can we do as adults to be a safe place for a young person? How can we help a child heal from trauma and crisis? Kim Tschirret knew from her own personal story as a child with an abusive and alcoholic father that healing was possible through Christ and the help of a seemingly unlikely source: horses. Kim found solace in spending time with a horse as a young girl and knew that others could find healing too by engaging with these magnificent animals. It is what led her to start Hope Reins, a non-profit organization in Raleigh, NC, that "pairs kids in crisis with rescued horses to find hope and healing." What has transpired is a beautiful story of redemption as horses and children, both facing painful emotional wounds, have found healing through the power of their connection with one another. Since its' inception in 2010, Hope Reins has helped over 2,600 kids in crisis at no-cost to the families it serves. Davey sits down with Kim to talk about how our past pain can lead us into an incredible redemption story for others, what kids need to feel safe, and how any adult can be a trusted source of hope in a hurting child's life. Resiliency after trauma is possible and Kim's story shows us what a powerful salve love can be for both discarded animals and wounded hearts in the quest for restoration.   Website: hopereins.orgFacebook: facebook.com/hopereinsnc Instagram: www.instagram.com/hopereinsnc Twitter: www.twitter.com/hopereinsnc Book: Joey: How a Blind Rescue Horse Helped Others Learn to See: https://www.amazon.com/Joey-Blind-Rescue-Helped-Others/dp/1496421752/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1657739526&sr=8-1-spons Sign up for the next NIW Masterclass: https://www.nothingiswasted.com/masterclass Find a Curated Pathway for your specific pain to purpose journey: https://www.nothingiswasted.com/pathways Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 237 - Finding Faith After a National Tragedy with Christina Stanton08 Sep 202201:22:24
What happens when you find yourself in the middle of a national tragedy, when your story is part of a collective one on every news outlet in the country? How do you find healing after a trauma played out on a national stage? For Christina Stanton, that was a lifelong question that began on a fateful day in New York City on September 11, 2001. Running for her life after the Twin Towers attack left her facing the rubble well beyond that infamous day. Wrestling with the aftermath of PTSD and the devastation that came from surviving such a horrific scene, Christina was searching for answers and she found them within the walls of a local New York City church. Finding God in the midst of such wreckage and having the people of God bear witness to her pain while providing practical help brought her hope and revealed the power of the Church. As if living through that national tragedy wasn't enough, Christina would find herself once again a part of a story that made national headlines when she contracted Covid-19 in early March 2020 and fought for her life in a hospital room, hundreds of miles from home. Living through two tragic marks in American history gave Christina a deeper understanding of who God is, even when we face the worst. In this episode, Davey and Christina talk about the value of the Church witnessing the pain of others, what suffering teaches us and the importance of community in finding healing from post-traumatic stress.Your suffering may not have been experienced on such a global scale, but you will find comfort and encouragement towards hope and healing in this conversation.   Website: https://christinaraystanton.com https://lovingallnations.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/christinaraystanton/ Book: Out of the Shadow of 9/11: An Inspiring Tale of Escape and Transformation https://www.amazon.com/Out-Shadow-11-Inspiring-Transformation/dp/1733745203/ Faith in the Face of Covid-19: A Survivor’s Talehttps://www.amazon.com/Faith-Face-COVID-19-Survivors-Tale/dp/1733745238/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 236 - Seeing Your Significance in Singleness with Mandy Hale01 Sep 202201:20:24
So often when it comes to the topic of singleness, there is this sense that many believe significance comes only when you finally find "the one." But the truth is, leading a life full of purpose doesn't have to wait until there is a significant other. In fact, singleness, no matter how long that season lasts, can be a fulfilling, purposeful time that the Lord uses in your life and in the lives of those around you. For Mandy Hale, it was coming to this realization that provided her the freedom to find joy in fulfilling her life's purpose as a single woman. Rather than focusing on the one kind of love she didn't have, she learned to see the love all around her through friendship, community, and family. Have you ever felt like you've gotten stuck in the grief? Instead of allowing the pain to bring something new and beautiful forth in your life, do you find yourself struggling to move forward? Any loss can leave us feeling stuck, but for a parent, losing a child can make it feel like there will never be life past the devastation. For September Vaudrey, losing her beautiful, 19 year old daughter in a car accident in 2008 made her wonder if life would ever look different than it did in the aftermath of that tragedy. And yet, step by step, she began to see God's goodness as He took her pain and created beauty from ashes. It was not an easy journey by any means, but a rich one. In this episode, September sits down with Aubrey to talk about what it looks like to get unstuck in our grief, why facing our pain head on matters so much, and how to give permission to others around us as they grieve in their own unique way. Full of practical wisdom, this conversation is for anyone who has ever felt like moving through the pain in their story is an impossible feat but wants to try and experience the good God has on the other side of it.   Website: http://septembervaudrey.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/septembervaudrey/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SeptemberVaudrey.Author/ Book: Colors of Goodbye: A Memoir of Holding On, Letting Go, and Reclaiming Joy in the Wake of Loss https://www.amazon.com/Colors-Goodbye-Holding-Letting-Reclaiming/dp/1496408179/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458922175&sr=8-1&keywords=colors+of+goodbye Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 232 - Learning to Connect with God in the Unexplainable with Emmanuel and Adrienne Threatt04 Aug 202201:43:59
What do you do when you feel disconnected from God in the middle of a hard season? How do you learn to trust Him when circumstances make you angry and confused? For Emmanuel and Adrienne Threatt, this was the wrestling they navigated after experiencing multiple miscarriages over a period of time in which other losses seemed to come at them unrelentingly. Trust can come easy when things are going our way and when our prayers are being answered the way we want, but learning to put your hope and faith in God after disappointment after disappointment can feel daunting. For the Threatt's, this process of learning was arduous. It came through vulnerability and transparency with themselves, God and others. Sharing their journey through the valleys of miscarriage helped them to find purpose in the seemingly never-ending pain and helped them to be honest with the Lord as to what they were feeling in the midst of it. Even after receiving the news that they were finally pregnant with triplets, there was still so much to work through with the Lord. In this episode, Davey talks with the Threatt's about what to do with the feelings that God is far away from you in your pain, how to process anger towards the Lord and using worship as an act of faith in hard times. The vulnerability and transparency the Threatt's share will encourage anyone walking through a painful season to continue to trust God, even when the path seems dark.   Website: www.HopeUnleashed.Me Socials: @OhBoyPhresh @YoAdrienneCLT for IG, FB, TW, TIKYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC28DPAwoFPnpLoVEMn8ZJDw Book: How to Fly to the Moon in a Cardboard Box https://www.amazon.com/How-Moon-Cardboard-Kardboard-Kids/dp/1733635602/ref=sr_1_1?crid=8TMWBODVR1OH&keywords=how+to+fly+to+the+moon+in+a+cardboard+box&qid=1655907323&sprefix=how+to+fly+to+the+moon+in+a+cardboard+box%2Caps%2C110&sr=8-1 ——-Hope Vibes (ministry) Www.hopevibes.org@HopeVibesCLT for IG, FB, TW, TIK, LI YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCQwUP_tsO7KirMz0cSMh-Dw Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 231 - Finding Perspective in the Unexpected with Kelley Scites28 Jul 202201:28:57
What do you do when life takes a turn you never saw coming? How can you step into a story you didn't plan for yourself? For Kelley Scites, the wrestling with those questions began after an unexpected surgery. What had promised relief from pain and a new lease on life ended with having to be put on full time oxygen. The life she had imagined as an active mom came to a screeching halt as she had to adapt to this new pace of living. But it was through this shift in her story that Kelley began to see the importance of perspective. Living focused on Heaven rather than her current circumstances began to give her hope in what at times felt hopeless. In this honest conversation, Davey sits down with Kelley to talk about why perspective is so important in circumstances that won't change, learning to trust God with the outcome of our story and choosing growth over bitterness. The details of Kelley's story may be different than yours, but they offer a rich insight into how our perspective can make or break us in the middle of hard things.   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kelleyscites/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kelley.scites Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Heaven by Randy Alcorn https://www.amazon.com/Heaven-Randy-Alcorn/dp/0842379428/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=heaven+by+randy+alcorn&qid=1658268326&sprefix=heaven+by+%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-1 Learn more about your ad choices.
