Rana is an expert in social inclusion and humanitarian ethics. She is the first Iranian woman to be a National Head of Office for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iran. Rana is also the President of Equal Employment Opportunity Network, Diversity Equity and Inclusion Chair of Rotary District 9800.

Sandra Elhelw is the CEO of the Settlement Council of Australia, the national peak body representing Australia’s migrant and refugee services. The Council has 130 member organisations working together towards an Australia where all people of migrant and refugee backgrounds belong, thrive and experience fulfilling lives.

Sandra was born in Whyalla, South Australia, just a couple of months after her family migrated from Egypt. She grew up as a young Muslim woman in the post 9-11 era, and has been deliberating over questions of migration, identity and belonging since her early formative years.

Prior to joining the Council, Sandra worked in frontline roles in migrant and refugee services. Trained as a lawyer, she has previously worked in sexual assault and family violence law reform. She is also pursuing a PhD on Domestic and Family Violence in Australian Muslim communities.

Recognized as one of the top 100 influencers in the language industry, Dieter is committed to expanding global language access, advocating for its importance in enhancing quality of life and equity worldwide.

Dieter co-authored the textbook "The Remote Interpreter" and actively participates in several industry organizations. He holds a B.A. in Radio, Film, and Television from San Jose State University and an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from McGill University. Eddie Arrieta is the CEO of MultiLingual Media.

When he was young, Eddie sold chocolates at school and helped his dad with his bottled water business, selling from store to store in every neighborhood in his hometown.

He was a young salesman.

At the age of 16, Eddie was fortunate to get scholarships to move to the United Kingdom, followed by the United States to finish his studies. He has led and participated in humanitarian projects around the world, including China, India, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Eddie has co-founded a co-working space, a public relations agency, a coaching service, a bakery, a travel agency, a farm, and a family. It's safe to say he likes to go from “zero to a 100”.

Today Eddie works remotely from his hometown, Sincelejo, helping companies globalize and localize by providing exposure opportunities and media consulting at Multilingual Media.

Tim Brookes was born in England and educated at Oxford before moving to the United States in 1980. 

An editor, guitarist, teacher, soccer coach and author of 17 books and numerous articles and essays, he founded the Endangered Alphabets Project in 2010 with his first exhibition of carvings in indigenous and minority scripts. 

Since then he has exhibited and spoken about the Endangered Alphabets at more than 150 colleges, universities, libraries, museums, and galleries including Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Harvard, the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress, while working with a wide range of cultures to create games and educational materials for learning minority scripts. 

His latest book is Writing Beyond Writing: Lessons from Endangered Alphabets.

He’s worked in localization for almost 20 years. In 2023, his team translated and published about four and half million words, divided by nine languages, and interpreted about two million words. 

Edwin is mostly engaged in, and loves, project/vendor/change management and strategy, but has a strong focus on prepress, training and some marketing on the side. 

Outside of work, Edwin loves spending time with his wife, four children (12, 9, 5 and 11 months), family and friends. They have three dogs (mainly due to him), two rats and a cat (mainly due to his wife) and he’s been smoking BBQ food most weekends. Edwin and his wife also take combined voice classes and Edwin is trying to make more time for his guitar before it gathers too much dust.

As an award-winning 30+ year veteran of the game industry, in 2021 she was included in the Forbes' "50 Over 50" Vision List as one of 50 veteran women selected from a wide variety of industries, and in the same year was inducted into the Women in Games Hall of Fame.

With an impressive 30-year career in the gaming industry, Kate delves into the intricate world of culturalization, highlighting its significance in creating culturally appropriate games. Kate shares some eye-opening experiences, such as the story of the game Kakuto Chojin when one audio file led to a massive PR backlash and her having to apologize to the Saudi Arabian government on behalf of Microsoft, back in 2004. 

Kate also shares her passion project, SetJetters, an app she co-founded to help fans visit filming locations from movies and shows. The app provides detailed information about locations, the ability to recreate shots, and gamification through badges.

Kate Edwards is the CEO and principal consultant of Geogrify, a consultancy which innovated content culturalization, as well as the CXO and Co-Founder of SetJetters, an app focused on connecting tourists to filming locations. 

She is also the former Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association from 2012 to 2017 and the Global Game Jam from 2019 to 2022. In addition to serving in several board and advisory roles, she is a geographer, writer, and corporate strategist. 

Following 13 years at Microsoft, she has consulted for EA/BioWare, Google, Amazon, Facebook, LEGO, Ubisoft, and many other companies. 

As an award-winning 30+ year veteran of the game industry, in 2021 she was included in the Forbes' "50 Over 50" Vision List as one of 50 veteran women selected from a wide variety of industries, and in the same year was inducted into the Women in Games Hall of Fame.

Sören Eberhardt is a global site manager working on localization and marketization of Microsoft’s Office 365 direct sales pages. 

He has worked in the field of internationalization and localization for the last 20 years, both on the vendor side and client side. He's held roles as translator, localization engineer and project and program manager over the years. 

While at Microsoft, Eberhardt has worked on the localization of Windows and Office, as well as Skype products. In addition, he has taught localization classes at the University of Washington and classes on computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools at New York University. 

He has published several e-books on languages. The Inuktitut language has the fewest speakers for whom Eberhardt has ever localized a product.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Jorge Russo dos Santos is originally from Portugal. After studying engineering in college, he started working for Microsoft in Dublin, Ireland, where he was the localizer of the first server operating system localized into European Portuguese. The job started his career at Microsoft and in the localization industry, where he progressed to the role of a software engineer and later project manager working across software and content.

Jorge relocated to Microsoft's Seattle-area headquarters in 2003 and continued to work for Microsoft until the mid-2010s. At Microsoft, he worked on Windows' Server and Tools and Cloud and Enterprise divisions, which involved different languages, methodologies and challenges. Jorge has extensive industry experience, working at Cisco, Workday, Meta (Facebook), Amazon and Block (Square), expanding his skill set to hardware, firmware and multimedia localization. He is a certified project management professional passionate about localization; he truly believes that one's native language should not be a barrier to accessing information or technology, and he's made it his life's work.

Renato shares his experiences as a Third Culture Kid and explains the importance of being able to adapt to different environments. Renato had a fascinating experience as a consultant with Uber, where he did a study about customer perception of quality that saved them 4 million dollars per year.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Angelo Berbotto is a solicitor practicing part-time in Family and Immigration Law, based in Sydney. He is also a legal translator certified by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (www.naati.com.au) in the following combinations:

1. English into Spanish,

2. Portuguese into English,

3. French into English,

4. Italian into English, and

5. Spanish into English.

Angelo was admitted in NSW in 2005 and in England in 2010. After admission he relocated to the UK and worked in commercial litigation in London and later as solicitor-advocate representing local authorities in child protection matters eventually being admitted to the Children’s Law Panel. From 2015-18 he served as Attorney-General of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Upon returning to Australia, Angelo worked for two years as Assistant Parliamentary Counsel before moving to private practice in 2022.

In November 2022, Angelo was elected the President of the Australian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (www.ausit.org).

Speaking 4 languages fluently, Andrzej is an engaged speaker, coach, advisor, sales trainer and triathlete, competing in IronMan triathlon races.

Erika Gonzalez is an Associate Professor at RMIT University and she is the Program Manager of the Higher Education Translating and Interpreting degrees. Currently, Erika is the Immediate Past President of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators. Under her leadership, the Institute developed the National Protocols for Community Translations that were drafted in partnership with the Federation of Ethnic Communities of Australia and supported by the Department of Health and Aging. 

Erika firmly believes that quality translation services are paramount in multilingual societies like ours, in order to achieve equity and cohesion. 

Erika is a NAATI certified translator and interpreter as well and a senior fellow of Advance Higher Education, a UK based organization focused on providing quality tertiary education.

On our second episode of The Native Experience, I have the privilege of chatting with Rachel Carruthers, the platform partnerships lead at Canva, to discuss the creation of truly native experiences for diverse audiences. 

Rachel shares her experiences working on Canva's product and marketing localization and internationalization efforts, eventually growing to over 120 locales. 

We also delve into the anthropology of language and how language shapes culture and perception. Additionally, Rachel shares her cultural background and unique perspective on bringing that to Australia. Join in on this insightful conversation about language, design, and culture!

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Joining Canva in 2017, Rachel was originally responsible for leading Canva’s product and marketing localisation and internationalization efforts. She worked to ensure that every user had a truly localized experience (be it on the Web App, iOS or Android platforms), while leading cross-functional globalization initiatives to support Canva’s long term international growth strategies. 

In March 2023 she shifted gears to focus on some of Canva’s key platform partnerships, driving comarketing opportunities and amplifying new product launches. 

So far, her favorite thing about her time at Canva has been the convergence of language and design, and the anthropological aspect of how culture can affect their users' design experience and platform behavior. 

Prior moving to Sydney, Australia to pursue her Masters Degree in Media, Rachel was working as a Senior Localisation Project Manager back home in Silicon Valley, servicing high-profile tech enterprise clients. 

Rachel is deeply passionate about language, food and culture, and loves to travel whenever she can. Being from California she also loves being outdoors, as well as working in animal foster care.
