Author Helen Rutter's Background (noises)20 Oct 202000:48:43

Author Helen Rutter Appeared in the background of her Husband Rob Rouse's episode earlier this year.
This time the tables are turned as Helen joins Barbara to talk about her new novel "The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh" and Rob is relegated to chopping trees in the background.

Not only does Helen have to combat some background chainsawing, but a late arriving Barbara Nice herself, who leaves Producer Paul to hold the fort while she tries to get connected....she has to go through it all in today's ep!
But when they get connected they managed to reminisce about times they spent together and how important it is to support artists in the current climate.

Episode 81 of Mrs Barbara Nice and Friends is part of the Birmingham Comedy Festival and also finds Barbara in an upbeat mood as her own piece of comedy, her Radio 2 sitcom, is being repeated, so she's getting to be heard by the masses again. Happy days!

Chasing Shazia Mirza, finding Jean Pickles05 Aug 202000:21:14

One Week ago, Mrs Barbara Nice performed a triumphant return to live comedy at the Frog and Bucket club in Manchester.
The gig was supposed to be a new dawn for comedy under the restrictions of the pandemic, but alas it wasn't to be.
The day after it happened, the government announced it was back into lockdown for many parts of the north.

To this end, Barbara intended to celebrate a job well done and commiserate a job well done in isolation with another of the acts from that night, Shazia Mizra. But pinning Shazia down to a time to record a podcast proved to be quite a tricky idea indeed, so instead Barbara shared her own tales from that night as she waited for Shazia to join her...and then someone else appeared down the line....

UB40's Brian Travers turns the tables on Barbara26 Jun 202000:30:30

Barbara Nice and UB40's Brian Travers go back a long way.

Here, they reminisce about early gigs they shared together, why bucket lists are a waste of time and Brian's artwork

Brian also managed to turn the tables on Barbara and ask her about her time in a band that should've been bigger than the rolling stones....
Plus, there's always time for a tune or two from Brian's special instrument (not a euphamism!)

They also chat home schooling, living in Cambodia and the famous names that inspired the doodles and how they've reacted to them

Confess your Sins to Comedian Harriet Dyer24 Jun 202000:39:50

After Barbara's first well earned Lockdown Break, she's back , and this time she's talking to comedian Harriet Dyer

Harriet comes to visit Barbara electronically, but if she had traveled she'd have set off from sunny Glossop and noted down all the animals she saw on her journey.
She still does that anyway, but she also finds time to talk about her comedy show where comedians confess their sins to her on stage, her new book that is still a long way from being completed and working out with Barbara if she's funnier off stage or on.
One thing we do know is she's definitely funny on a podcast!

Jenny Eclair and the Phantom Whistler...15 Jun 202000:43:17

Another week for Barbara Nice and Friends and Barbara is in a bit of a technical stress, despite being in a great place off the back of her latest "Piggin' Lockin" show

She is joined, and cheered up by, Jenny Eclair as they both visualise each other's locations, fantasise about being in the wings at a comedy club and discuss what they think about on stage.
But mainly they get to the bottom of Jenny's phantom whistler phobia...

Jenny Eclair has a podcast of her own, based off her book "Older and Wider"

The Oft-Borrowed Comedian Kirsty Newton (and Adelaide the Dog)10 Jun 202000:31:44

Barbara Nice has been "borrowing" Kirsty Newton to perform comedy and music at her Piggin' Lock-in gigs and realises that she isn't the only comic to do that.
In the past, Kirsty has been "borrowed" by Phil Nicholl, Robin Ince and Paul Merton, but now it's Barbara's turn to talk to her about why she isn't a massive name, how busy a comedian's life was before lockdown and why now is a brilliant time to have a cute new puppy called Adelaide in your life

PLUS, the Donkey Riding song finally gets the accompaniment it deserves. AND A 2nd verse? After all this time? Shocking!

As mentioned on the podcast, Kirsty is performing a singalong on Weds 11th June to raise money for Britain's Carers, which you can view and join in with here:

Through the Pass Door with Dramatist Terry Johnson09 Jun 202000:49:07

It's MONDAY in the world of Barbara Nice and Friends (your listening day may vary) and today Barbara is joined by award winning Dramatist Terry Johnson for a view on how the world of theatre is coping through lockdown

Terry was one of the first adopters of the performing on zoom we almost take for granted now, and his show on Ken Loach at the start of lockdown brought Barbara to tears. Intentional tears, because it was GOOD
He also finds time to talk about that transitory moment when you realise what it is you want to really do in life as well as paint the most optimistic view of lockdown easing we've had on the podcast yet.

Stewart Lee: King Rocker03 Feb 202100:29:37

Like every podcast going this week, Mrs Barbara Nice and Friends was fortunate to be able to chat with comedian Stewart Lee to talk about the film he has in part funded, produced, interviewed and promoted along with Michael Cummings (Brass Eye, Toast of London): King Rocker

The film focuses on Birmingham alternative rock band "The Nightingales" and Stewart chats to Barbara about the making of the film as well as their shared history in the band's early days in Brum when Stewart was a fledgling standup and Barbara was part of her own groups the Surprises and The Ever-Readys

They manage to unearth some stories about their shared past on the Birmingham music scene unique to them as well as working out how many curries it takes to make a film and how Frank Skinner's memories of being in the band made everyone question their collective memories.

You can watch King Rocker on Sky Arts on 2 consecutive saturdays (6th/13th) at 9pm
(Freeview Channel 11) and on its catch up service thereafter.

Podcaster Jo Russell Loves a Good Rumour. And Dettol. 08 May 202000:27:38

Hands across the sea, as Mrs Barbara Nice and Friends reaches out to fellow Podcaster Jo Russell of "I Secretly Recorded my Boyfriend" podcast as well as a long and distinguished radio broadcasting career

They talk about how Jo negotiated herself some much needed Dettol at one of Barbara's gigs, the best rumours they've heard or even can start themselves about the current lockdown situation we find ourselves in at time of recording, and how those lazy Archers from Radio 4 need to follow Barbara's example and get pumping out episodes daily!

Musician and Broadcaster Ben Kane (From the Band The Bank Accounts, whose song "Get into my Head" is actually our intro music-the more you know!) joins Barbara from his accidental lockdown location to talk about his technology, pre-lockdown purchases and the fact he has resorted to commentating on every day happenings

Barbara also quizzes producer Paul on who the podcast Twitter account has picked up by the way of famous followers and creates with him the first in Producer Paul's Polls-stay tuned next week for the results!

Ben and Barbara also talk their contributions to the homeless Charity SIFA's "Big Brummie Campout" event on Friday 8th May.

Director Jason Winguard says Chuckle and Move On06 May 202000:40:31

On a bumper length edition of her podcast, Mrs Barbara Nice updates us on all that has happened since she last spoke to you, including her apperance on Mark Watson's 24 hour "Watsonathon" and how previous podcasts have caused a reunion of some of her old mates

She then connects to "Eaten By Lions" director Jason Winguard to talk his new Radio 4 series, how to keep calm on a film set and when to give up your dreams because you just haven't "got it" (something which Jason then regrets)

Also, more developments on Jean Pickles AND a shout out to our new American listeners. Howdy!
