Filmmaker Damian Mc Carthy (ODDITY, CAVEAT) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his new feature ODDITY. From the films that scared him and inspired him to become a storyteller of his own… to writing and directing his own short films for the last 2 decades… to how he put together his terrific first feature film (CAVEAT) which had the unfortunate timing of being released right at the height of the global pandemic… to how he buckled down and wrote three new scripts while the rest of the world was shut down and learning how to bake bread or binging TV shows… to how he crafted his screenplay for ODDITY to contain so many genuine scares in a single location setting… to how storyboarding helped him achieve such evocative frames of fear on a tight timeline… to the design of the film's signature "screaming statue"… to what it was like directing one actor playing two roles… to ODDITY's triumphant win of the "Midnighter Award" at South By South West… to the film's theatrical release (it's in theaters now!)… Damian has crafted a ghastly chiller that hits all the right notes!

Also, Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a writer trying to get their screenplays in front of the right people.

PUBLIC VERSION. Producer J.D. Lifshitz (BARBARIAN, FIRESTARTER, THE VIGIL, WRATH OF BECKY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From the movies that inspired him as a child and set his heart on a career in the movie business… to making his first movie in 7th grade (and putting a New Line Cinema logo on it)… to becoming a Hollywood history buff by reading, watching, and teaching himself who all of the players were and then reaching out to every filmmaker and executive he admired so that he could start learning the ropes as a teenager… to retaining his drive and ambition through thick and thin and always pressing onward and upward… to why he believes that a healthy level of delusion and ignorance served him so well… to the pivotal moment when he and his business partner made the decision to stop chasing the market and start making the movies they themselves sincerely wanted to see… to producing a string of terrific movies like THE VIGIL, BECKY, BARBARIAN, and more… to the first time seeing one of his films with the New Line Cinema logo officially on it... the fact that J.D. has already accomplished so much through sheer will and uncompromising tenacity will remind you that your dreams are attainable, too.

From having supportive parents who were willing to take him into NYC over and over again for auditions… to embarking on a long run in soap operas where he not only honed his craft but also had his very first kiss (on screen!)… to attending college at Hofstra University (around the same exact time as Adam!) and having a disappointing audition for a major film surprisingly turn into the next major step forward in his career… to working with the late Stuart Gordon on KING OF THE ANTS where he delivered one of the most raw and uncompromising roles of his career… to playing leading roles in the much heralded RE-ANIMATOR: THE MUSICAL and the controversial TASTE… to most recently working with Joe on A SUITABLE FLESH (title tentative)… this funny, inspiring, and shockingly honest conversation is one that you won't soon forget.

Ep 485: Petr Jákl19 Sep 202201:01:18
PUBLIC VERSION. International filmmaker Petr Jákl (GHOUL 3-D, KAJINEK) may have begun his film career as a stunt performer and actor in such genre flicks like XXX and ALIEN vs PREDATOR but he actually started out in the Czech Republic as an Olympic Games hopeful in Judo before his dreams were sidelined by an unfortunate injury, thus sending him off on a new adventure in the visual arts. Now, after years in front and behind the camera producing films with the likes of Samuel L Jackson and George Clooney and directing smaller films, Petr has directed his biggest film to date, the epic, sweeping period adventure film MEDIEVAL, based on the true story of fifteenth century Czech Icon and warlord Jan Ziska who battled against the odds during the Holy Roman Empire. Boasting one of the most impressive international casts in a while, including Ben Foster, Matthew Goode, Til Schweiger and THE Michael Caine (!), Petr takes the audience on a historical journey with copious amounts of action, gore and excitement and takes the boys along on his own adventure from Olympic contender to big-budget filmmaker and all the trials and tribulations along the way one can only expect from show business, which can be even bloodier and more harrowing than any skirmish with the Teutonic Order. Petr also discusses how he became inspired by filmmakers while working on-sets, learning what to do (and NOT to do) to create movie magic, working with his father on the script based on a legendary icon in his country, how BRAVEHEART was a major inspiration MEDIEVAL and even his time working with Joe on the found footage film GHOUL 3-D (which at the time was the first 3-D film of its type before being hindered by distribution issues). Also, Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a patient in search of a wider audience.
Ep 484: Damien Leone12 Sep 202201:06:53

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Damien Leone (TERRIFIER, TERRIFIER 2, ALL HALLOWS' EVE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to share his journey in one of best discussions about making a slasher film that you'll hear this year. From being named after "Damien" in THE OMEN and being introduced to horror films at age 3… to falling in love with the art of special make-up effects and making his own short films… to quickly deciding that college wasn't his path and putting money into a short film to serve as his calling card instead… to being recruited to direct an anthology (ALL HALLOWS' EVE) by a producer who saw his short on YouTube… to the genesis of "Art the Clown"… to making TERRIFIER on a ridiculously low budget by wearing so many key hats on the production himself… to the film's slow climb to success through word of mouth and the excitement of horror fans… to the long road to making the highly anticipated sequel (TERRIFIER 2 - in theaters October 6th) and everything that goes into creating a great villain that connects with genre fans… this 2 hour filmmaker on filmmaker conversation is like taking a Slasher 101 course at Horror University… if Horror University was a thing.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for an aspiring artist who is feeling like his chance at going pro may have passed him by, a slasher gauntlet is thrown down, and the boys announce the very first details about YORKIETHON 7 - coming this Christmas! As usual, the juiciest bits are in the second hour. (We love you, Patrons!)

Ep 483: Neil LaBute05 Sep 202201:00:26

PUBLIC VERSION. Celebrated filmmaker and playwright Neil LaBute (IN THE COMPANY OF MEN, NURSE BETTY, DEATH AT A FUNERAL, LAKEVIEW TERRACE, YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, THE WICKER MAN) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his craft in creating some of the most provocative and beautifully honest cinema and theater of the last 25 years. From growing up in a blue collar family with a father that didn't initially view filmmaking as a real career… to shooting his first feature film without any prior filmmaking experiences… to welcoming the collaboration of cast and crew when blocking a scene… to the power of a master shot and using coverage sparingly… to how he approaches scenes that require intense intimacy between actors… to the creative leeway of shooting independently despite the sacrifice of resources… to the incredible value of spending quality time with cast during pre-production… to the benefits of casting fresh faces and just how much an audience can forget that they are watching a performance… to critics and audiences projecting a character's worst behavior onto the filmmaker personally… to the making of his latest film HOUSE OF DARKNESS (in theaters September 9th and on-demand/digital September 13th)… to revealing which one of his films was actually shot to be in black and white… this conversation with one of the industry's most daring, artistic, and important voices is one that will hopefully inspire you to create the art you truly want to create rather than conforming to whatever is currently considered en vogue and safe.

This Christmas the biggest podcast event of the year is going to get even bigger! The first announcement for YORKIETHON 7 is coming in next week's episode!

Ep 482: Bill Watterson29 Aug 202201:02:35

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Bill Watterson (DAVE MADE A MAZE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and take a deep dive into directing tricks and techniques. From Bill finding his way to Los Angeles through running away from things feeling stalled at home… to the pros and cons of signing with a major agency versus a smaller agency… to the storytelling benefits of using "oners" that change from wide shots to close-ups within the same shot… to shooting "oners…with coverage" and long takes at different performance speeds when time permits as a safety to have in editing… to the benefits of pulling off a simple insert shot at the very start of a shooting day to control the politics of the daily production report… to the artistic joy of shooting something as unique as DAVE MADE A MAZE and the incredibly talented crew that such a "different" project can actually attract… you'll be itching to grab a camera and go be YOU by the end of this extremely passionate conversation!

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a storyteller who is suffering from a major life tragedy that seems to have disenchanted his will to write and Bill explains how sometimes it's right when things are at their absolute worst that a light can suddenly arrive at the end of your dark tunnel.

Ep 481: Jeff Lieberman22 Aug 202201:00:06

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Jeff Lieberman (SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER, SQUIRM, JUST BEFORE DAWN, BLUE SUNSHINE, REMOTE CONTROL) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his long career. From the pros and cons of 35mm vs DCP, vinyl records/analogue recordings vs CDs/digital files, Blu-Ray vs VHS… to how Jeff wasn't even a fan of movies ("Why spend 2 hours of a date sitting in silence and staring at a screen together when you could be talking to each other instead?") until he saw Michelangelo Antonioni's BLOW-UP (1966) - a transformative cinematic experience that completely changed his direction in life… to how the positive affirmation and encouragement of a teacher made him realize that he was actually a talented writer… to how an anti-drug short film he made in 1972 (THE RINGER) helped secure him as the director for his screenplay SQUIRM in 1976… to why it's a compliment to hear from fans that he "messed up their childhood"… to the real life horror movie set up that inspired Jeff's big film that got away… to how a film's score can be a disservice to creating true suspense… to a lesson in Hollywood accounting… to the writing of his new book DAY OF THE LIVING ME: ADVENTURES OF A SUBVERSIVE CULT FILMMAKER FROM THE GOLDEN AGE (now available!)… this in-depth conversation with a true legend of cinema is as enjoyable as it is educational.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a listener worried about going crazy between gigs and Jeff reveals how dancing with a gorilla on Halloween inspired SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER and the real reason why most fans don't even realize that he wrote the second sequel to a beloved 80's children's movie.

Ep 480: Andrew Traucki15 Aug 202200:58:35

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Andrew Traucki (THE REEF, BLACK WATER, THE JUNGLE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his latest shark thriller THE REEF: STALKED. From a university student pursuing a science major… to how a chance visit to a film set opened his eyes to filmmaking and completely changed his path… to his love of the survival thriller genre as opposed to fantastical monsters or gorefests… to how much more effective the theater of an audience's mind is when creating fear as opposed to actually showing the audience everything on screen… to the many difficulties that come with filming in the elements/outdoors and the perils that come with shooting scenes in (and under) water… to how savvy audience's have become to visual effects/green screen and why practical locations are pivotal in an effective survival thriller… to the pros and cons of shooting with multiple cameras… Andrew shares the challenging process of making THE REEF: STALKED (currently in select theaters and available to stream on Shudder).

Dr. Arwen's office was closed for a private therapy session this week but Andrew and the boys have their own impromptu therapy session together over on-line "critics" who tear down films that they couldn't have possibly seen yet and when filmmakers are given "thank you" credits on IMDB for films they have never even heard of.

Ep 479: Felicia Day08 Aug 202201:00:55

PUBLIC VERSION. Writer, Producer, Creator, Actress, and Geek Culture Icon Felicia Day (THE GUILD, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG, SUPERNATURAL, EUREKA, THE FLOG, TABLE TOP) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss her incredible career journey. From her game changing decision to stop waiting for opportunities to come her way and create her own award winning and ground breaking web series THE GUILD (now featured in the Smithsonian)… to becoming an artistic hero and paving the way for so many others to stop waiting and start creating… to learning the harsh reality that the Hollywood system doesn't know what to make of "outside of the box" talent and that being a self-made success doesn't exactly translate to feature film and TV series deals with the major studios and networks…  to launching her own content platform GEEK & SUNDRY and the immense pressures that came with producing 40 hours of weekly content with extremely limited resources for the monumental task at hand… to coming to the realization that being a healthy human being would make her a much better artist than just being a work-a-holic and making the difficult decision to walk away from GEEK & SUNDRY… to how the exhausting experience disenchanted her desire to write for almost 5 years… to Felicia's process for recording books on tape and why she felt the need to give trigger warnings to her fan base with her latest audio-book THE HONEY TRAP (now available on audible)… Felicia is one of the most inspirational examples of an artist who stopped waiting for permission and started doing her art, her way.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a filmmaker who managed to scare away their previous therapist and Felicia and the boys geek out over their shared love for THE WRAITH (1986) in this incredible conversation with a true creative titan.

Ep 576: VC Dupree17 Jun 202400:59:06

(Well, except for that one time on a rooftop in Manhattan!)

Ep 478: Addison Heimann01 Aug 202201:00:39

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Addison Heimann joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his journey writing and directing HYPOCHONDRIAC- a film that reflects his own mental health breakdown. From starting out acting and writing in the theater before acting, writing, and producing for various short films… to creating his own opportunity to direct his debut film by bravely writing a screenplay so deeply personal that he was unquestionably the right director for the job… to the various lens tricks Addison used to convey the emotional core of his story… to the extreme highs of touring the film in the worldwide festival circuit and the joys of sharing the experience with fellow filmmakers he has befriended along the way… to how developing a strict structure to his daily life and setting personal boundaries has helped Addison be able to continually discuss the making of his film during the promotional process without having to relive the mental anguish that inspired it… to the importance of being able to "make decisions and be nice" as a first time director… to unabashedly wearing his inspirations on his sleeve while remaining confident in his own unique voice… Addison's experience making HYPOCHONDRIAC (currently playing in select theaters and available on-demand / digitally as of August 4, 2022) will surely speak to the aspiring filmmakers who listen to THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast all over the world.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a video game creator who is having trouble finishing the game he is working on due to new (and possibly better) ideas constantly pulling his focus away and Addison shares how he found his people and his film family within the horror genre… and why it is so important to never let those people go now that he has found them.

Ep 477: Rob Savage25 Jul 202200:56:56

PUBLIC VERSION.

Filmmaker Rob Savage (HOST, DASHCAM) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From directing music videos and episodic television that felt more like "gigs" as opposed to his true artistic calling… to finding inspiration in what filmmakers like David F. Sandberg were doing by creating brilliant short films to gain consideration for studio level film work… to how he methodically went about making his phenomenal short film SALT (2017) which ultimately showed the industry that his talent could not be ignored… to how his found-Zoom-footage film HOST (released just 4 months into the global COVID-19 pandemic) proved to be exactly the right movie at exactly the right time… to his decision to immediately follow up HOST with a second found footage horror film (DASHCAM) and his controversial choice in making the movie's protagonist such an extremely polarizing character… to how he managed to make and release both films while simultaneously bringing his next film to life (the adaptation of Stephen King's THE BOOGEYMAN - currently in post-production)… you're gonna need a nap after you hear how hard Rob was working through the pandemic while so many others were binge watching TV shows, learning how to make sourdough bread, and grandstanding on social media!   Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a patient looking to manage their stress levels without self-medicating, the group discusses the benefit of embracing resource limitations and using imposed restrictions as a creative advantage, and the boys are reminded that "Park Avenue leads to Skid Row" in this wickedly motivating conversation.

From stealing the show at just 6 years old when he starred in a play alongside his father… to performing in plays as a teenager alongside actors like John Ritter and Eric Stoltz… to moving to Los Angeles right out of High School and working odd jobs for 4 years before beginning to work steadily as an actor… to the crushing disappointment of the first TWO major roles he booked not actually happening… to knowing from the moment he read the script for SUMMER SCHOOL that the role of "Chainsaw" was absolutely going to be his… to the important lesson that director Carl Reiner taught him during his audition… to the late 90's when the exciting roles were no longer coming his way… to finding himself so disenchanted with the industry that he stepped away and found himself once again working odd jobs like a computer programmer, a karaoke band musician, and a Las Vegas magician… to discovering that taking a break from Hollywood was precisely what he needed to fall in love with it all over again… to returning to his true calling by immersing himself in all aspects of storytelling (writing, directing, producing), working with friends and good people that he chooses to work with, and not giving a f*ck what anyone else thinks… Dean's extremely clear, totally sincere, and brutally honest perspective on the entertainment industry is one that every artist (aspiring or veteran) will benefit from hearing. (SUMMER SCHOOL fans are going to have their minds blown by all of the behind the scenes anecdotes that Dean shares in the spectacular second half of this phenomenal episode!)

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Charles Dorfman (BARBARIANS) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey in this refreshingly honest filmmaker on filmmaker conversation about the long process of bringing an idea to the big screen for the first time. From a child enamored with his grandfather's vast collection of VHS films… to reading every book about film directing that he could get his young hands on… to studying theater as a student at University where he initially started acting as a means to becoming a better director… to working as a development executive where he earned Associate Producer credits on films like THE KING'S SPEECH, SHAME, and TRACKS… to setting up his own theater company where he acted in several plays… to the long process of writing BARBARIANS while figuring out what exactly he wanted to do with his life… to how he ultimately came to the conclusion that if he would be directing the film he would not also act in it like he had originally planned… to the importance of always keeping an eye on the entire process of producing a film and not developing tunnel vision on only the task at hand… Charlie's experience making BARBARIANS is one that aspiring filmmakers can surely gain insight and inspiration from.

Charlie also shares what 80's soft rock song his film's live foxes preferred to hear on set and the boys' fingers get bitten when they fall down a YouTube rabbit hole in a discussion about why filmmakers and other content creators shouldn't base the value of their work entirely on the number of views or "likes" each effort receives.

Ep 470: "Violence in Cinema" Roundtable06 Jun 202202:18:43

THE MOVIE CRYPT's special roundtable series continues as Adam sits down with Mick Garris (THE STAND, NIGHTMARE CINEMA), Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW 2-4, REPO! THE GENETIC ROCK OPERA) and Tom Six (THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 1-3, THE ONANIA CLUB) to discuss violence in cinema and where they draw the line with the art that they put out into the world. From the films that disturbed them… to whether or not it is an artist's responsibility to consider who might wind up seeing their work… to dealing with the MPAA's often nonsensical editorial demands before release… to today's "participation trophy culture"… to trying to push an audience's limits in modern "woke" times where acting offended has become America's new favorite pastime… to what each artist says they just would never personally do in a film… to how their perspectives may or may not have changed with age or becoming a parent… this conversation has never been more poignant than it is today. As with all of our roundtable episodes, we hope you will continue this conversation with your own friends and family the next time entertainment is blamed for a real life atrocity. Joe was on location directing his latest film when this roundtable was recorded but he weighs in with his perspective on the subject during an extended introduction.

This conversation was recorded on May 11, 2022, several weeks before the most recent string of mass shooting tragedies in the United States of America. To hear the roundtable that was specifically about gun violence, check out episode 459 which premiered on March 21, 2022.

Ep 469: Hannah Fierman30 May 202200:58:01
PUBLIC VERSION. Actress and filmmaker Hannah Fierman (V/H/S, SIREN, ST. AGATHA, DARK CIRCLES, CREEPSHOW, VAMPIRE DIARIES) shares her career journey with Adam, Joe, and Arwen. From making ends meet financially in the early days… to the inspiration Hannah found in seeing Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO + JULIET for the first time… to adapting the play she wrote for her college senior thesis into her first short film… to learning that the first feature film she ever acted in just so happens to be "huge in Nigeria"… to the success of V/H/S and the process of turning the segment that Hannah starred in (AMATEUR NIGHT) into a stand alone feature film (SIREN)… to studying the movements of both cats and bats in shaping her performance as "Lily" in V/H/S and SIREN… to stepping into the director's chair on the upcoming DARK CIRCLES (currently in post-production)… to the beauty of being part of a filmmaking community filled with solid and reliable artists/friends you can call upon… to the importance of always continuing to move forward rather than dwelling on difficult past experiences… Hannah's positive outlook and sincere love of storytelling is absolutely contagious.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" to a filmmaker who agreed to work on a project that is beginning to show some serious red flags, Hannah shares her strangest encounter with a fan, and Adam and Hannah profess their love for cinematographer Jan-Michael Losada (VICTOR CROWLEY, DARK CIRCLES) "one million percent" in this extremely enjoyable artist on artist conversation about the filmmaking process.

Ep 575: Jim Cummings10 Jun 202401:00:10

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker and actor Jim Cummings (THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW, THUNDER ROAD, THE BETA TEST, HALLOWEEN KILLS, BARRY) joins Adam and Joe in the ArieScope studio to share his career journey. From the disastrous screening that lead to him stepping away from directing for several years and the moment that a submerged shopping cart helped him realize that he'd never make a boring movie again… to why so much of writing is actually not writing… to making up for the gap in sex in modern cinema and why he doesn't hold back on sex or violence artistically… to why he prefers long takes in his story telling… to shooting during the period where the WGA and the agencies were in a stand-off over "agency project packaging"… to meeting his entertainment heroes… to what it was like facing off with "Michael Myers" and whether or not he was really scared… to his OPPENHEIMER audition… to his positive experiences with crowd funding projects… to working on BARRY… making his hilarious new short film IS NOW A GOD TIME? (world premiering at Tribeca) and the joys of making shorts… Jim gets extremely candid and honest about his Hollywood experience.

Dr Arwen provides a short but sweet "Hollywood Therapy" session for a fan who has fallen in love with horror conventions, Adam and Joe steal and eat a famous director's candy, and the group discusses whether or not a disconnect exists between the industry the media and the audience.

Ep 468: Akie Kotabe23 May 202201:01:26

PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Akie Kotabe (EVERLY, THE BATMAN, THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From majoring in computer science at UT Austin before randomly noticing a casting call and on a whim actually auditioning… to bombing that very first audition but catching the acting bug… to fearing the odds of ever becoming an actor and deciding to move to Japan to teach English instead… to his mother's passing causing him to go for broke and chase his real passion… to making the move to Southern California only to discover that Los Angeles wasn't exactly as depicted in LAST ACTION HERO… to his days of working odd jobs doing everything from waitering to selling spoons as a telemarketer… to acting in student films and then booking his first TV commercial… to becoming a working actor in TV and film… to Akie's deeply personal process in developing "Dead Man's" motivation in EVERLY… to the importance of bringing a grounded point of view and realism to even the most supporting role in a film… Akie has remained as down to earth a guy as you'll ever meet despite traversing through everything from TV commercials to performing in the biggest budget Hollywood blockbusters being made today.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a writer who feels like they may never write again due to their long haul COVID-19 symptoms and the guys share some of their most awkward celebrity encounters in this fantastic conversation that should be required listening for anyone who has ever wanted to pursue their passion instead of stick with the safer status quo.

Ep 467: Lola Blanc16 May 202200:58:21

PUBLIC VERSION. Musician, actress, and filmmaker Lola Blanc (AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL, FATALE COLLECTIVE: BLEED) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for a heartfelt conversation about the personal side of the creative process and and the pressures an artist faces from an industry that's always chasing after the next "hit." From what can happen when you focus only on trying to create something that "everyone will like" rather than creating art that means something to you… to the internal scars that can inevitably develop when too much weight is put on outside opinions… to the crucial moment when your art is shared with an actual audience for the first time (a step that so many find themselves robbed of in today's straight to streaming world)… the three artists discuss the life changing freedom that comes with not letting your art (or yourself) be defined by an externally perceived outcome.

Joe also professes his undying love for the drive-in and Adam steps outside again to discover that society is a much better place than what the last 6 years of social turmoil have painted the world to be. We have no doubt that by the end of this honest conversation you'll feel inspired to create from the heart and not for the approval of the masses.

Ep 466: Robert Kurtzman09 May 202200:59:01

PUBLIC VERSION. In THE MOVIE CRYPT's special 9th anniversary episode Adam, Joe, and Arwen are joined by make-up FX master and filmmaker Robert Kurtzman (EVIL DEAD 2, WISHMASTER, FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, SCREAM, BOOGIE NIGHTS, and SO many more)! Covering everything from Kurtzman's childhood love of monsters and having his FANGORIA magazines taken away from him by the nuns in Catholic School… through his early days working for John Buechler and getting to travel the world making movies… through co-founding the legendary K.N.B. FX group with fellow artists Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger where the company would literally conquer the world of Hollywood special make-up FX… through stepping into the director's chair with 1995's THE DEMOLISIONIST, 1997's WISHMASTER, 2007's THE RAGE, 2007's BURIED ALIVE, and 2010's DEADLY IMPACT… through starting his own make-up FX company ROBERT KURTZMAN MUFX… the guys leave no life cast, silicone head, or foam latex body suit unturned in this candid conversation! Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a filmmaker who is struggling to reclaim the motivation he had before the pandemic seemingly erased all of his progress and the boys enjoy a monster-sized geek out over make-up FX in this milestone episode that celebrates 9 years of THE MOVIE CRYPT.

*THE MOVIE CRYPT premiered on May 6, 2013 and is one of the only podcasts on the internet that has never taken a week off. Even as two working filmmakers who are consistently directing new films and TV shows, Adam Green and Joe Lynch have released a new episode of this podcast every single Monday (some years even on Christmas Day!) ever since the day the first episode was released.

Ep 465: Michael Schultz02 May 202200:59:54

PUBLIC VERSION. Director Michael Schultz is an absolute legend in film (THE LAST DRAGON, COOLEY HIGH, CAR WASH, DISORDERLIES, KRUSH GROOVE, SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, etc) and one of the most prolific directors in television (THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES, L.A. LAW, PICKET FENCES, FELICITY, ALLY MCBEAL, CHARMED, GILMORE GIRLS, BLACK-ISH, NEW GIRL, ARROW, CHUCK, etc). Starting out with a dream of serving in the United States Air Force, Schultz unexpectedly found himself pivoting into the theater where he would cast a (then) unknown actor named Al Pacino in one of his very first plays. Through sheer ambition, tenacity, and raw talent, Schultz would pave his own way into Hollywood. He would go on to direct some of the biggest actors, comedians, and musicians in the history of entertainment and now… 50 years later… Michael Schultz is one the most prolific directors in American television and a bonafide hero of Black cinema. Best of all, he has also managed to remain one of the most humble human beings you'll ever be blessed to meet.

In this master class of an episode, Schultz shares his amazing career journey with a truly starstruck Adam, Joe, and Arwen. Prepare to be inspired, friends!

Ep 464: Aharon Keshales25 Apr 202200:45:52

PUBLIC VERSION. Acclaimed filmmaker Aharon Keshales (RABIES, BIG BAD WOLVES) began his career as a teacher and critic of film before paring up with his former co-directing partner Navot Papushado (GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE) to create some of the most provocative cinema in the last few years, including the first horror film out of Israel! Aharon discusses what it was like directing solo for the first time with his new film SOUTH OF HEAVEN (starring Jason Sudekis, Evangeline Lily & Shea Whigham and currently available on VOD) and reveals what it was like working as the main director for his first english language feature, which also happened to finish shooting right before the pandemic and edited during it.

Aharon and the boys also discuss how they first met in FrightFest while he was premiering RABIES, how Aharon pivoted from hardcore horror to more dark comedy in BIG BAD WOLVES (which was Quentin Tarantino's favorite film of 2013) and how he strove not to be boxed into any particular genre. Keshales also discusses how SOUTH OF HEAVEN was written as a love letter to his wife, the art of the dynamic one-take shot, how he presents violence in his films, a fantastic alt-take on DIE HARD, and how filmmakers can present villains with sensitive sides and heroes with darker shades of grey.

Ep 463: Elisha Cuthbert18 Apr 202200:57:58

PUBLIC VERSION. Actress Elisha Cuthbert (HAPPY ENDINGS, 24, ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK, OLD SCHOOL, THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, LOVE ACTUALLY, HOUSE OF WAX, and SO many more) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss her career journey. From the intensity of shooting a series as ambitious as 24… to her honest initial reaction to Richard Curtis' screenplay for his genius romantic comedy LOVE ACTUALLY… to the choices that made Luke Greenfield's THE GIRL NEXT DOOR such a classic coming of age film… to the disappointment of seeing how different of a movie CAPTIVITY became after an executive decision was made to shoot a whopping 30 pages of "new/additional scenes" after principal photography had already been completed… to Elisha's amazing story about how sticking to her guns and speaking up lead to her being cast in HAPPY ENDINGS… to a super in-depth discussion about the making of her latest film THE CELLAR (now playing in theaters and streaming on SHUDDER) and what it was like filming in Ireland during the height of the global pandemic… this is an absolutely phenomenal conversation that you're going to wish never had to end. (We could have easily gone on for another 2 hours if time had allowed!)

Unfortunately, there is no "Hollywood Therapy" segment this week as Arwen wasn't feeling well (don't worry, she went to the vet right after this recording and she's already feeling much better) but Elisha was able to answer a bunch of your "Viewer Mail" questions before we ran out of time!

Ep 462: Deborah Voorhees11 Apr 202200:52:52

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Deborah Voorhees (FRIDAY THE 13th PART 5, AVENGING ANGEL) has been one of the horror genre's favorite Scream Queens ever since her work on the infamous 5th installment of the Jason Voorhees (no relation) saga, a role made even more iconic by the music video for Wolfie's Just Fine's "A New Beginning" in 2016. Now Deborah is back in the director's chair for what could be her most personal work to date, a slasher film that delves into the world of stalkers and the trials of horror convention culture entitled 13 FANBOY. Her film boasts a "killer" cast (Dee Wallace, Corey Feldman, Kane Hodder, etc) and is already a huge hit on the Amazon charts! Deborah discusses how she started in the business, how 13 FANBOY was a passion project (not just for her but for many of the actors in her cast who regularly appear at cons), and the reasons she loves writing and directing even more than acting. Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a writer who is feeling ready to take the next step with their initial ideas and outlines.

Ep 461: Chris Cullari & Jennifer Raite04 Apr 202200:50:18

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaking team Chris Cullari & Jennifer Raite (12 DEADLY DAYS, THE SLEEPOVER) have been working together for years but it took a pandemic for the dynamic duo to hit the dirt (literally) and write and direct their first feature film, THE AVIARY, starring Malin Ackerman, Chris Messina and Lorenza Izzo (coming to theaters and VOD April 29th). Jennifer and Chris discuss how they met and persevered with a creative partnership well after they broke up as a couple… collaborating with Joe on the YouTube series 12 DEADLY DAYS… their writing process… and the challenges they faced conceiving, producing and distributing an indie film during a global pandemic.

Dr. Arwen pulls double duty in honor of having two guests and provides "Hollywood Therapy" for two listeners/patients! First, the good doctor and her translators tackle professional etiquette when geeking out over a celebrity co-worker. Then, Hollywood's favorite Yorkie advises a new podcaster on how to get listeners to tune into their niche podcast!

Ep 460: Joe Swanberg28 Mar 202200:59:48

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Joe Swanberg (DRINKING BUDDIES, YOU'RE NEXT, Netflix's LOVE) is one of the most prolific artists working today. Writer, director, producer, actor, editor, cinematographer… he literally does it all! Swanberg sits down with Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey from aspiring basketball player to filmmaker… the films and filmmakers of the mid-80's to mid-90's that inspired him while working at Hollywood Video… how he prioritizes projects that "can be made tomorrow" rather than investing years developing giant productions that may never ever get made at all… how working with Adam Wingard helped teach him how to make really good movies really fast… and how he turned a combination of fear and major life changes like becoming a father, getting divorced, and being broke into the very fuel that kept him churning out project after project in his 20's and 30's. Swanberg also discusses acting in Mickey Keating's latest film OFFSEASON which opened in theaters on March 11th and is currently available on VOD and digital!

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a filmmaker unsure of just how much time, energy, and money to spend promoting and traveling with a short film on the festival circuit and Swanberg reveals where you can now finally stream his earlier previously impossible to find films in this total geek-out between three fellow filmmakers / cinematic nerds.

Ep 459: "Gun Violence" Roundtable21 Mar 202202:15:35
On November 14, 2019 a student at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, CA brought a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun to school with him. The boy shot 5 of his schoolmates before shooting himself in the head. Mia Page-Tretta (daughter of actress Tiffany Shepis) was one of the students that was shot. While she fortunately recovered, two of Mia's classmates (one of whom was her best friend) did not survive. The weapon used was an unregistered "ghost gun" that had been assembled from a kit. Even with the gun jamming up after the first shot and the shooter needing to stop and clear it, the entire shooting lasted only sixteen seconds yet still took 3 lives and injured 3 others. In the second of THE MOVIE CRYPT's new series of roundtable discussions Adam, Joe, and Arwen are joined by their friends Tiffany Shepis (VICTOR CROWLEY, TROMEO AND JULIET) and her daughter Mia Page-Tretta for an honest conversation about the growing gun violence epidemic in America. From Mia's harrowing firsthand account of surviving such a terrible tragedy… to what the aftermath has been like for Mia as a survivor of a school shooting and for Tiffany as a mother who only wants to prevent such a terrible tragedy from happening to anyone else… to the different ways we all process grief and how we handle those in our lives who are trying to recover from trauma… to simple things we can all do to try and prevent such horrifying and senseless events from continuing to happen on such a regular basis… we hope that you continue this conversation with those in your own life and within your own community. #SaugusStrong Please visit www.EveryTown.org for more information on how you can help prevent gun violence. Ep 574: Diane Foster03 Jun 202401:05:43

PUBLIC VERSION. From making the move from New Jersey to Hollywood… to becoming an original dancer for The Pussycat Dolls… to producing a festival darling that premiered at Tribeca… to working with her film family, gigantic jackalopes, demonic bunnies, and gallons of gore on EASTER BLOODY EASTER… to her experience on Glenn Danzig's VEROTIKA… this conversation is a fun-filled basket of Movie Crypt goodness with a positive message of sisterhood and some gore to boot!

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Steven R. Monroe (I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2010, THE EXORCISM OF MOLLY HARTLEY, HOUSE OF 9) has one of the most prolific resumes in Hollywood. Hell, he was 1st assistant camera (focus puller) on the 1991 Steven Seagal ass-kicker OUT FOR JUSTICE and he directed 8 TV movies in 2017 alone! Seriously, look the guy up on IMDB and your head will spin! In this fantastic conversation, Steven joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss the reality of being a steadily working director in an industry that is constantly changing beneath the legs of his director's chair. Chock full of practical anecdotes and long-term career advice from his own experiences, the boys discuss how Steven has managed to retain the passion for his craft no matter what the size of the project or the genre he is working in. Steven discusses the making of his latest horror film UNBORN (now available exclusively on Tubi - Steven's 3rd Tubi original), Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a listener who is considering turning her original stage play into a film, and the conversation turns deadly serious in the second hour when the boys dive into Steven's experience re-making the extremely controversial rape revenge film I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE. Ep 457: Mark Pellington / Part 207 Mar 202200:57:44
PUBLIC VERSION. In the second part of our expansive conversation with acclaimed filmmaker Mark Pellington (ARLINGTON ROAD, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, PEARL JAM's "Jeremy" music video) Mark rejoins Adam, Joe & Arwen to continue discussing his wide and varied career with a focus on the feature film and TV side of his work. Including amazing anecdotes on the making of films such as his first feature GONG ALL THE WAY (which he is currently painstakingly restoring)... to the trials of studio storytelling with ARLINGTON ROAD (starring Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins)... to insightful tales of making THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES (starring Richard Gere). Mark also goes into frank, emotional detail on the sudden death of his wife in 2003 (a tragedy that he calls "the end of that part of my life") and how friends, family, therapy and his own work served as healing. We also discuss how his new experimental music/dance feature THE SEVERING helped him reconnect to the world.   Dr. Arwen takes this week off of "Hollywood Therapy" but Mark provides plenty of therapeutic  discussion on how to work through tragedy as well as plenty of tips and tricks on directing actors and crew.
Ep 456: Mark Pellington / Part 128 Feb 202201:01:59
PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Mark Pellington (ARLINGTON ROAD, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, I MELT WITH YOU, PEARL JAM's "Jeremy" music video) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for a discussion about his career that is so epic and fascinatingly detailed that even at 2.5 hours long they barely scratch the surface. That's right, the guys geeked out so hard over Mark's early MTV years that they will need to record a separate episode dedicated to Mark's feature film work!

Pull up a front row seat to the birth of MTV as Mark candidly discusses his journey from an entry level assistant position in 1982… to becoming a bona fide network staff member… to producing some of the network's most iconic promotions… and ultimately becoming one of the most revered music video directors of all time working with bands like PEARL JAM, U2, NINE INCH NAILS, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, IMAGINE DRAGONS, ALICE IN CHAINS, LINKIN PARK, and the late MICHAEL JACKSON.

Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a listener dealing with intense frustration and the guys discuss Mark's latest film THE SEVERING (in theaters this weekend)- a cathartic expression of grief inspired by the devastating loss of Mark's wife that is told through the physicality of dance as opposed to a more traditional linear narrative. This captivating conversation is just getting started as Mark is set to return for Part 2 next week!

Ep 455: Rob Jabbaz21 Feb 202200:59:51

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Rob Jabbaz's new film THE SADNESS took the festival world in 2021 by storm. The story about a dangerous virus that causes the infected to lose their inhibitions has shades of our own Joe Lynch's MAYHEM (2017), however Rob takes it all a bloody, graphic step further. Audiences who have already seen THE SADNESS internationally and on the festival circuit have been disgusted, shocked, and full of praise for the film which will see its US release this spring. Adam, Joe, and Arwen talk to Rob from halfway around the world in Taipei where he explains how the pandemic itself influenced his story, how the film was financed originally as more of a traditional zombie film, the hurdles of creating provocative cinema in these modern times, how his DIY animation background helped his live-action craft, and much more! Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a listener trying to avoid creative burnout and Adam announces his first convention appearance in almost 4 years in this extremely candid conversation about "going there" with your art.

Ep 454: "Toxic Fandom & Cancel Culture" Roundtable14 Feb 202202:03:49
In the first of a new series of Movie Crypt roundtable conversations, Adam, Joe, and Arwen welcome the co-creators and co-hosts of The MJ Cast (Jamon Bull, Q, and Elise Capron) along with award winning British investigative journalist and frequent MJ Cast contributor Charles Thomson (THE HUFFINGTON POST, THE GUARDIAN, THE SUN, and more) as they candidly discuss toxic fandom in a cancel culture world.   Created in 2015, The MJ Cast is a podcast celebrating Michael Jackson through in-depth interviews with the very people who worked closely with and truly knew the real King of Pop as well as extremely honest opinions and perspectives that cover all aspects of Jackson's life and career. This roundtable conversation explores the joys of creating a podcast dedicated to discussing THE most famous entertainer who ever lived as well as the many hurdles that come with attracting such an extremely passionate and opinionated global fanbase… especially when the subject of their podcast was placed in the cancel culture crosshairs with the 2019 release of HBO's polarizing and problematic documentary/TV movie LEAVING NEVERLAND in which two men accused Jackson of having sexually abused them in their childhood years. MJ Cast co-hosts Jamon, Q, and Elise share their front row experiences with fandom at both its best and at its uglies while investigative journalist Charles Thomson (best known for his award winning investigation that exposed the cover up of the historic Shoebury paedophile ring) levels off the conversation with his fact based perspective on the explosive worldwide response to the controversial LEAVING NEVERLAND. =========================== As mentioned early in the episode, this conversation uses the controversy surrounding LEAVING NEVERLAND as a main example to comment on toxic fandom and the cancel culture times we are all living in. Their new film, GHOSTS OF THE OZARKS (premiering in theaters and VOD this month) is their latest painstakingly crafted project which boasts an impressive cast (David Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, Angela Bettis) and an even more impressive, genre-bending storyline that seamlessly mixes western and gothic horror with plenty of old-school effects. Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a patient wondering whatever happened to "Rock & Roll Filmmaking" and the boys tease the very first MOVIE CRYPT roundtable episode coming this Valentine's Day!
