#75 What if Moving Abroad Doesn’t Fix Your Life? Let’s Talk About It. 10 Sep 202400:42:11

“What if I move abroad and it doesn’t fix my life?”

If you wake up at 2am with this thought coursing through your mind, you’re not alone. Many people dream of starting over in a new country, hoping it will bring them the happiness or fulfillment they feel is missing. But there’s often a nagging fear: What if I still don’t feel fulfilled? What if the grass isn’t greener on the other side?

In today’s episode, we’re diving headfirst into this fear. We’ll explore why moving abroad might not solve all your problems—and why that’s okay. I’ll share practical advice for finding happiness and fulfillment no matter where you are, along with my personal story as an Enneagram 7 who’s constantly chasing “the next big thing” I'm SURE will make me happy.

I’ll also share how I struggled with these same feelings while living abroad and how I’ve learned to be present and appreciate the here and now—without the pressure of traditional gratitude lists (because, let’s be honest, those can feel a bit forced).

Bonus: If you’ve been dreaming of moving abroad but still don't have a concrete plan in place to make it happen, my Move Abroad Escape Plan Bootcamp is for you! This 4-day live event will guide you step-by-step in creating a personalized plan for your move—whether it’s choosing the right country, figuring out how to fund your life abroad, or setting a timeline that makes sense.

#74 No Fluency Required: How to Move Abroad Without Speaking the Language03 Sep 202400:48:16

Ever tried to order a meal in a foreign country and ended up with something totally unexpected? Like that time I asked for a "tomato salad" in France and got a plate of just tomatoes. Language barriers can lead to some pretty funny situations, but they can also feel intimidating when you're thinking about moving abroad.

In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of language learning and breaking down why moving to a country where you don't speak the language isn't as scary as it might seem. I'll share my personal experiences from living in countries like China, Vietnam, and Georgia—places where I either had to learn the language from scratch or get by without speaking it fluently.

Spoiler alert: you don’t need to be fluent to survive and thrive!

What You'll Learn:

  • Why Language Shouldn’t Hold You Back
  • Practical Tips for Learning a New Language
  • Navigating Life Without Speaking the Local Language
  • Can You Get a Job on the Ground Without Fluency?
  • Why Your Mindset is Everything.

Now, let’s dive into today's topic. We’re busting the myth of waiting for the perfect time to move abroad. Spoiler alert: it doesn't exist.

If you’ve been holding off, thinking that a magical, perfect moment will come, it's time to rethink. We'll dive into how waiting for perfection is a form of self-sabotage and why you should take action now.

I’ll also chat about common excuses people use to delay their move, like busy work seasons, important life events, lease agreements, and selling a house. Plus, I'll share strategies to overcome these hurdles.

It's time to take some major accountability and start even when things aren't perfect.

#64 No You DON'T Have to Hate the US to Move Abroad 02 Jul 202400:48:46

Let's clear up a big misconception—not everyone who moves abroad hates their home country. You can absolutely love your country, be frustrated by it, and still want to fix the things you don’t like. And guess what? You can do all that while living overseas.

In this episode, we’ll explore the concept of running towards something you desire, instead of just running away from what you don’t. It’s all about focusing on what you want in life and designing your dream lifestyle abroad. Plus, I’ll address that common line, "If you don’t like it, leave," and explain why critiquing your country is actually a form of patriotism and a push for change.

Living abroad doesn’t mean abandoning your roots. You can still be politically active and advocate for change from anywhere in the world. We'll also touch on the privileges and opportunities that come with being from the US, and how these can coexist with your desire to experience life abroad.

Tune in to hear more about how you can love your home country, live abroad, and advocate for change all at the same time. Let’s get into it!

#63 From Grocery Store Scare to Global Safety: My Eye-Opening Return to the US25 Jun 202401:05:45

Trigger Warning: gun violence, mass shootings, kidnapping, and trafficking.

In this episode, I dive deep into a pretty scary experience I had at a grocery store on my most recent visit to the US and use it as a springboard to talk about the bigger issue of gun violence and safety here compared to living abroad. It's a heavy topic, but one that's so important, especially given how often mass shootings and gun-related incidents seem to happen in the US.

I share more personal stories of feeling unsafe in the US and contrast that with my experiences in other countries where safety isn’t such a major concern. From the stark differences in everyday safety and vigilance to the challenges of dealing with culture shock and reverse culture shock, we cover a lot of ground.

Plus, I chat about everything from how the food here affects my body, to work culture and political tensions in the USA and compare it to my experience living overseas.

#62 “I Chose This”: Releasing Victim Mentality So You Can Love Your Life Abroad 18 Jun 202400:31:16

In this episode, we're diving deep into the power of choice and taking ownership of our decisions.

I'll share personal stories about how I once felt stuck and envious of others living their dreams while I was tied down by a job I didn't love and student loans. But then I realized I had the power to choose a different path.

While we can't control everything that happens to us, we can control our reactions and how we show up in tough situations. I'm here to encourage you to own your choices and make empowered decisions to create the life you truly want.

In this episode, we're diving deep into the realities of balancing work and travel as a digital nomad. I'll be sharing my personal journey and the insights I've gathered over years of traveling the world as a digital nomad to help you enjoy your travel lifestyle without constant work stress or FOMO.

Finding the right balance between work and travel is key. We'll also dive into the importance of managing expectations and FOMO, trusting that your future self can revisit destinations and experiences.

Tune in to discover how to make the most out of your digital nomad lifestyle while staying productive and growing your career.

#54 Choose Your Hard: Navigating the Discomfort You Know vs. the Discomfort You Don’t Know22 Apr 202400:21:53

Let's be real: moving abroad is hard.
But here's the thing - so is staying exactly where you are right now.

In today's episode, we're diving deep into a crucial mindset shift: the concept of "choosing your hard".

Is your comfort zone actually all that comfortable? Is your life right now really all that 'easy'?

Personally, I'd rather put in a little hard work now to create the life I want, and get a little uncomfortable to have a life that's aligned to me.

Ready to embrace the challenge and rewrite your narrative? Let's do this.

#53 STOP Being So Afraid of Freelancing: Here’s Why Freelancing is the Perfect Move Abroad Career17 Apr 202401:09:51

Now, let's bust some myths, shall we? Freelancing isn't just about working in your pajamas (although that's definitely a perk). It's about freedom—the freedom to choose where you work, when you work, and who you work with.

Hey, I get it. Stepping into the world of freelancing can be scary. The fear of the unknown, the uncertainty of where your next paycheck will come from—it's enough to make you run right back to that 9-5.

But here's the thing: freelancing can actually be MORE stable than a full-time job, AND you'll land clients and get money in the door faster than if you follow the traditional job application process.

Drawing from my own journey as a freelancer, I'll share why I traded in the traditional 9-to-5 grind for the freedom of freelancing, and give you some insider tips on how to ensure you set yourself up for success so you can get paid well and avoid the starving artist stereotype.

So whether you're considering freelancing as a side hustle or diving headfirst into full-time freelancing, tune in for some invaluable insights and tips to kickstart your freelancing journey. After all, the world is your oyster, and freelancing might just be the key to unlocking your dream life of freedom and flexibility.

#52 Ask a Move Abroad Coach: Should I Travel For a Year With My Kids Before I Pick a Place? 09 Apr 202400:55:25

It's time for another coaching podcast!

This time I'm bringing on Shannon Converse for a deep dive into the world of decision-making and finding balance as a digital nomad parent. Shannon is a member of the Move Abroad Crash Course, and after seeing her latest question in the Crash Course Facebook Group, I knew I needed to bring her in.

Shannon's at a crossroads, pondering whether to plant roots in one place overseas or take her family on a whirlwind adventure as digital nomads. With three kids in tow, she's seeking that delicate balance between consistent community and the freedom to travel anywhere anytime.

In this conversation, not only did we dive into which option is best for Shannon and her family, but we also got deep about prioritizing our own happiness and fulfillment as parents so we can better show up for our kids.

From fears over picking the "right" country, to travel FOMO, and anxiety over whether this lifestyle is good for kids, we cover a lot in this episode!

#48 Ask a Move Abroad Coach: Finding Confidence to Leave Your Job, Start a Business, AND Move Abroad12 Mar 202400:47:52

In this week's episode, I decided to try something new: live coaching on the podcast! (I am the Move Abroad Coach after all).

For our very first live coaching episode, I brought in Mary Morgan from our Freedom Life Accelerator program.

Mary has big dreams of launching her own business and making the leap to Europe, but she's looking for that extra boost of confidence to bid farewell to her stable 9-5 gig and embrace the risks of entrepreneurship.

As her coach, I walked Mary through the fears that are coming up for her around risk. Together, we dove deep into her past experiences to unearth the roots of her fears and chart a course toward launching her dream business.

We didn't shy away from discussing loss and grief— Our conversation touched on the paralyzing fear of losing everything and the pivotal importance of overcoming it to truly live a life of fulfillment.

Here are some key takeaways from our heartfelt discussion:

  • Moving abroad isn't just about changing locations; it's about creating a life that's aligned to you
  • Establishing an LLC can offer peace of mind, providing a protective shield for your business and personal assets.
  • Sometimes we're more afraid of success than we are of failure because we have more to lose

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do, and a HUGE thank you to Mary for allowing herself to be vulnerable with us.

Can I actually make a stable income freelancing? Do you have to constantly hustle for clients? Can you really make good money, or is it all low-paying gigs?

In today’s episode, we’re tackling the top 10 myths about freelancing that might be stopping you from taking the leap. Whether you’re considering freelancing as a way to fund your move abroad, or just curious about what it’s really like to work for yourself, this episode is for you.

We’ll dive into common myths like:

  • Freelancing is unstable – Is it really?
  • You have to be constantly searching for clients – Let’s bust that myth wide open.
  • You can’t make good money freelancing – Spoiler alert: You absolutely can.
  • It’s impossible to have work-life balance – This is a you problem, not a freelancing problem.
  • And many more!

By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what freelancing is really like, and hopefully, a newfound confidence to consider it as a viable option for living your dream life abroad.

#33 How to Visualize and Manifest Your Move Abroad 05 Dec 202300:34:54

Hi everyone and welcome back to The Move Abroad Coach Podcast. On episode 33 of the podcast, I am breaking the stigma and fear that *may* be associated with manifestation and showing YOU exactly why you should be doing this as well as HOW to do this. Give it a chance before you judge this book by its cover — there is science that backs how implementing these thoughts and doing the work can lead you where you want to be.

You may be thinking that you are not ready or may not know exactly everything that you want quite yet, and that is okay. The first step is to literally just start — take the first leap by opening your mind to this practice and watch where it can lead you! So, what are you waiting for? In this episode I am showing you exactly how and what to do, I have a little challenge for you to assist in motivating you, as well as sharing my meditation that helps realign what I want in life. So join me and listen to today’s episode!

Here's what we talk about in today's episode:

  • Taking the time to close your eyes and visualize what it is you want
  • By doing this action step, you are more likely to make this happen!
  • The Challenge — try this meditation every single day for a week! Yes, you read that right.
  • The Meditation — We begin at 19:05, join me!
  • Did you meditate? How do you feel? What did you see? Let me know by DM’ing me on IG!

Hi everyone! On episode 32 of The Move Abroad Podcast, I am asking you the hard questions…WHY do you need more than a year to plan your actual move to another country?! You might think you need more than a year, but I am here to tell you that you actually don’t need that long.

The reality is — anything longer than a year is NOT a goal…it is a vision, and I want you to know and understand the difference. A goal is something short-term, something you are working on implementing in the NOW. A vision is something that you are just imagining and are not quite exactly putting the work into making happen. It is important to know that if you want to see a change, you must quit with the excuses and make it a priority now! Join me as I dive into this further on today’s episode.

Here's what we talk about in today's episode:

  • There is no perfect time and there never is going to be a perfect time
  • The reality is, you could move abroad and work freelance or remote in just 2 months!
  • You say you will move in 2 years, but what can you ACTUALLY do to get started?
  • If you take TOO much time to “plan for the move”, you won’t do it.

#30 My Experience Giving Birth Abroad (The Good the Bad and the Money) 14 Nov 202301:20:12

I am so glad you are here and welcome back to The Move Abroad Coach Podcast. On episode 30 of today’s podcast, I am sharing the details of my birthing experience. In this episode, you will learn what I loved the most, what I did NOT like, and some personal opinions on giving birth abroad.

Overall I do not regret it and am happy with the care level we all received during the labor and delivery. I am also excited to share what exactly everything ended up costing in the end (a nice surprise, too) and how it compares to the US healthcare system as well as the details of insurance coverage vs. no insurance coverage.

Here's what we talk about in today's episode:

  • Noticeable cultural differences with giving birth abroad — were they good or bad?!
  • The Plan vs. The Reality of the Situation
  • Chris was almost NOT allowed in the delivery room and we freaked out!
  • If I had to choose, would I give birth abroad again?

#29 Let’s Make Sure You Love It: How to Plan an International Scouting Trip 07 Nov 202300:31:32

Hi everyone! On episode 29 of The Move Abroad Podcast, I am talking about something that you may have thought about but are unsure if you should do it. You are at the point of deciding to move, but now you are curious if you should take a scouting trip...and I say go for it! Of course, you can watch YouTube videos, read up on blogs, and join social media groups, but if you can swing it, I think it is very smart to explore the new city and country that you are moving to or even considering.

Consider how your everyday life would look like in the new city. Now actually do those things. The tourist activities can wait — it is time to actually figure out if you can adjust to that way of living. What are your non-negotiables? What about things you would be flexible on? There is so much to consider.

REMEMBER — you do NOT  have to do a scouting trip, but they are awesome!

Here's what we talk about in today's episode:

  • You visit a country you thought you would love, but you hate it. That's okay! Move on to the next.
  • Is a scouting trip absolutely necessary? No, but it is a great way to get your feet wet before making this huge decision. Perhaps entertain the idea.
  • Do you get a good vibe or happy energy from your city of interest? Really sit on that.
  • Make sure to talk to the locals and ask questions. Really make sure you are getting to know the area that you will be living in.

#28 Is Living Abroad Safe??! 31 Oct 202300:36:45

Hi everyone and welcome back to The Move Abroad Podcast! Today is episode 28 of the Podcast, and it is our spooky Halloween special — I am talking about something that comes up more often than not. It can feel super scary and is one of the most common questions….safety while living abroad. Is it actually safe to live abroad? What is the difference from living solo vs. solo female travel safety?

From China, Tanzania. Mexico, Georgia, and even the USA, there are certain safety measures we all should of course consider (i.e. pick pocketers, etc). However, it is unfair to think that just because someone moves abroad, especially a woman, should consider it “unsafe” to live in that country. Listen now and you may be shocked by what you learn!

Here's what we talk about in today's episode:

  • The concerns about me moving abroad and traveling solo, especially as a woman
  • I actually felt MORE safe in China!
  • What is the difference if I live solo vs. travel solo?
  • You may be SHOCKED to learn which country has been the most unsafe that I lived in!
  • Living abroad and traveling can actually be more safe!

Happy Halloween and I’ll see you next week, where we’re going to talk about something NOT political and intense!

#26 The 5 Biggest Ways We Self-Sabotage When it Comes to Moving Abroad 17 Oct 202300:25:28

On episode 26 of the Move Abroad Coach Podcast, I am talking about self-sabotage and how as humans, we love to get in the way of our own dreams. It’s almost like we just cannot help it! It comes down to wanting to do something big, but then we get cold feet and revert to self-sabotage and undermining the decision that we once were so excited about.

In this episode, I am jumping into why we do this and how to navigate back to the excitement for this big leap in your life. You should be surrounding yourself with people who love and support you, so how do you find your way back to those people?! Listen now!

Here's what we talk about in today's episode:

  • Wait until the “perfect” time to move abroad (retired, too busy, or things “settle down”)
  • Confiding in people who would never do this, don’t support you, or don’t “get it”
  • You isolate yourself from people who are going through this, who could actually be a big help
  • Searching for jobs at home, while still searching for jobs abroad. Why?!
  • You’ve gotten hung up on a “roadblock”, yet are not seeking the resources to get through that
