Episode 9: Mothering Through Estrangement: Laura’s Story22 May 202500:46:16

In this powerful episode, Lou and Adina sit down with Laura to explore a type of mother loss that often goes unnamed: estrangement. Laura became a mother in 2005 while still in contact with her own mother, navigating years of parenting with someone in her life who couldn't show up in the way she needed. She shares what it was like to feel deeply alone while technically “not alone” and how setting boundaries—eventually leading to full estrangement in 2021—brought clarity, peace, and a surprising kind of healing. Together, we talk about the grief of unmet needs, the freedom of going no contact and the strength it takes to mother yourself while mothering your children.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone navigating a complicated mother-daughter relationship while trying to show up as the parent they needed for themselves.

Love,

Lou and Adina

Episode 12: Grief, Love, and Raising a Family Together: Lou and Her Husband Dan Open Up15 Jun 202500:43:03

In this conversation, co-founder Lou sits down with her husband Dan to reflect on being a husband to a motherless mother.

Their story started as friends when they met on a postgraduate university course. Before they were a couple, Lou remembers telling Dan her parents had died and feeling embarrassed, self-conscious and different. Little did she know it would be one of the things that brought them together and in love.

Dan is the reason Lou feels she can dedicate time to TMM. The reason she can record podcasts, host groups, have meetings. He sits silently behind her and their family; the husband of a motherless mother. But what is it like to walk in his shoes?

An honest, important conversation on how the other half feel about motherlessness and how the impact of mother loss really does affect the whole family.

An important listen for partners – we see you too.

Love,

Lou & Adina

Episode 16: Motherless at 11: Vikki's Story14 Jul 202500:42:33

In this deeply moving and vulnerable episode of The Motherless Mothers, Lou and Adina sit down with Vikki, who lost her mum to breast cancer when she was just 11 years old. Growing up, Vikki found herself in a silent grief, her family avoided speaking about her mum, each trying to protect the others from more pain. Now, Vikki opens up about her journey.

With her mum’s birthday on July 15th, this conversation, airing just one day before, feels especially poignant. Vikki’s story is a beautiful reminder of the importance of making space for grief, for memory, and for the love that never leaves us.

If you've ever struggled with the silence that often follows loss, this one is for you.

Episode 15: Lou and Sacha on Grief, Friendship, and Everything Between07 Jul 202500:37:39

Friends are the family we choose for ourselves. This could not be truer of co-founder Lou’s friendship with Sacha, a bond spanning over two decades. Their childhood friendship has seen the highest of highs as they welcomed their babies into the world only six weeks apart last summer. But also the lowest of lows - weathering the storm of the loss of both of Lou’s parents at only 20-years-old.

Lou and Sacha sit down to talk about the intersection of friendship and motherlessness. How has mother loss changed their friendship? How has Sacha learnt to support Lou when mother loss feels too heavy to carry? What has Sacha learnt about supporting a motherless friend?

This conversation shines a light on the magic of a sisterhood, not by DNA, but by memories, choice, and supporting one another through it all. For the friends who are behind the scenes. For the friends who want to do more to support a motherless friend. For the friends who are new to this world of motherlessness, this is for all of you.

Losing your mum before her time is never something you see in life’s plan. Losing her slowly, piece by piece, is on another level. In today’s episode, Kennedy steps up to talk about what a genetic form of dementia did to her mum, how mother loss can be slow, scary, and unexpected, and how she mothers her two girls while missing her mum.

For anyone whose mum has dementia or who is working through the grief of losing her to a memory disorder, we hope you feel seen, heard, and supported in this episode.

Ep47: Liv: Grief, Growing Up and Losing Mum as a Teen26 Mar 202600:54:50

In this episode, she shares what it really looks like to raise children while carrying your own grief. The quiet moments no one sees. The milestones that sting. The strength you build because you have to. We talk about why finding women who get it can shift your entire parenting experience and why this experience changes us in ways others may never fully understand.

Ep44:An Island on Its Own: Megan’s Take on Motherhood When Your Mum is Gone 05 Mar 202600:50:34

When Megan first got in touch, we genuinely got chills after reading her email. Honest, raw and had a way of describing motherhood we’d never heard before - “We can see our friends and family on their islands, they’re waving and asking how we are, but they can’t quite reach us. And I can see them on their islands, with connecting bridges to their Mums’ islands. So while we are loved by many, it’s just not the same.” We delve into life without her mum around, and why our island will never be quite the same as anyone else’s.

In this episode, we sit down with PJ Ellis, former Big Brother housemate, charity founder, and now the creator of Mommy’s Boy, a brave new space for men grieving the loss of their mums.

PJ, who grew up in Birmingham and has spent his life championing community through projects like LoveBrum, joins us on the podcast to explore what really happens when you lose a parent - how the grief doesn’t just break you, it reshapes you. Together, we talk about the layers that fall away after such a loss, the identity you slowly rebuild, and what it means to parent yourself when the person who is meant to be here, loving and championing you, is gone.

Ep58: Lockdown Pregnancy, Postpartum Psychosis and No Mum: Geri’s Story11 Jun 202600:59:49

Geri is mum to two boys and a mum-influencer with over 30,000 followers. She’s musical and cares deeply for young people, a love that led her to run London Music Box, a musical school for students on the Autism Spectrum and mainstream students.

But what Geri doesn’t always share is that she lost her best friend seven years ago, her mum. Even saying her name brings tears to Geri’s eyes.

We’re chatting with Geri about what first-time pregnancy without a mum in Covid looked like; the truth about living with postpartum psychosis and how Geri overcame this; and why being a motherless mum will always shape everything she stands for in motherhood.

Ep57: Before I became a mother, I lost mine: Sophie’s story. 04 Jun 202600:58:12

Sophie lost her mother as a teenager—a loss that shaped not just her grief but the woman, mother, and leader she would become. Now a mother of two young sons, Sophie reflects on what it means to grow up without a mother while raising children of her own and how that early loss continues to echo through everyday moments of motherhood.

In this episode, we explore losing your mother during your formative years, how grief evolves from adolescence into adulthood, parenting without a maternal reference point, the ongoing impact of mother loss across life stages, and building something meaningful because of what you’ve lost

Sophie isn’t just a community member; she helps shape The Motherless Mothers charity into what it is becoming today. Sophie supports the charity behind the scenes as a trustee and was instrumental in bringing the TMM community from online into real life—even co-hosting our very first London supper club and helping create spaces where women can connect face-to-face in their grief.

This is a conversation about legacy—not just what we lose, but what we go on to build.
