| Episode 49: Nourished–Feeding Kids is Deeper than Just Food with Dr. Deborah MacNamara | 13 Mar 2024 | 01:23:42 | |
In this episode, we interviewed Dr. Deborah MacNamara, author of the book: Nourished–
She talks about how food has been divorced from connection and it was never meant to be this way. In today’s society, we are worrying too much about WHAT to feed our families and forgetting to focus on our relationships. If you are a mama struggling with obsessing over what to feed your child, this episode is a breath of fresh air and will empower you to feel confident in your choices and know that your relationship with your child supersedes the food they are eating. This episode is a must-list and we think the combination of Mary Ruddick’s episode and this one complement each other perfectly.

In this episode we interviewed Daniel Griffith of the Robinia Institute. In today’s climate, regenerative agriculture is a popular phrase being used in the farming and health industries, as well as marketing campaigns. Daniel unpacks what the label “regenerative agriculture” means and why the conversation and practices surrounding this trendy label might need to be reframed. He posits that regenerative agriculture does not actually get to the root cause of our problems since it simply continues the cycle of mechanization and reductionism. As Daniel so beautifully says: “First we need to heal the soul before healing the soil.” Tune in for a philosophical conversation about the land, our connection to it, agriculture, community, and the hope for a better future. Allan Savory calls Daniel the “poet laureate of holistic management,” and he did a fantastic job of painting a vivid picture of the landscape with his words.

This is the last episode of season 1. We will be back soon with more episodes!
Trigger warning: Eating disorders
This episode touches on so many wonderful topics! Liz shares her history of her eating disorder and how that led her to create the Homegrown Education Curriculum. She talks about how we can educate our own kids (no matter what age) on the food they are eating and give them a lifelong, healthy relationship with food. She dives into what the Homegrown Education Curriculum is and how individuals can use it in their home or school. Finally, the conversation weaves in and out following the theme that food education IS food FREEDOM. Ultimately, we want our kids (and ourselves) to have the knowledge and freedom to choose the best foods for our family. This is an episode you won’t want to miss!

In this episode, we talk about a hot topic: snacks! We start out by sharing some of the statistics related to Americans and their snacking habits as well as how much money the snacking industry makes. Then we go into some of the effects snacks have on our health and our children’s health. The conversation also touches on managing snacks outside the home at parties, sports events, and relatives’ homes. We end the episode by discussing how we each of our families manage snacks at home, what snacks we feed our kids, and listing off some of our favorite packaged snack brands as well as homemade snack ideas.
Because there were so many snack brands and homemade snack suggestions mentioned in the episode, we decided to create a document to put them all together in one place for our listeners.
