#213 - Lauren Harte-Hargrove, PhD - Executive Director, Misophonia Research Fund (MRF)
13 Feb 2025
01:02:50
I'm excited to have Dr. Lauren Harte-Hargrove, executive director of the Misophonia Research Fund (MRF). We talk about this fund’s origins, and the evolution of research around misophonia. We start by getting a little into her background in neuroscience and her transition to the nonprofit sector. About the MRF and current research talk about some current focus areas of research, including the prevalence of misophonia, potential treatments, and the integration of AI in research. Lauren also raises some important issues like the significance of community perspectives in shaping research priorities and the challenges of conducting studies with diverse populations. Finally we also talk about the funding landscape in general in light of recent turmoil in federal funding. But overall, Lauren rightfully expresses optimism for future developments and the power of partnerships in advancing misophonia research.
Dr. Jaelline Jaffe is one of the most experienced therapists working with people with misophonia, over on the west coast. Jaelline shares her journey from teaching to becoming a therapist specializing in misophonia. We talk about a ton of things, the importance of family support and school accommodations and we get into her own protocol for approaching misophonia that incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. We spend a lot of time highlighting the role of adverse childhood experiences and epigenetics in understanding misophonia, emphasizing the need for mental health professionals to be aware of these factors in treatment. We also talk about the Misophonia Association annual convention, for which she is a co-founder and board member. It’s happening again this October 16th weekend in Phoenix and we talk about what it’s all about and how you can learn more. See the link below. Also I wanna mention her new book for clinicians called “These Sounds are Driving Me Crazy!” Training for Mental Health Professionals in Treating Sound Sensitivity Disorders. It just came out and is available at sensitivetosound.com/training. Link again below.
#203 - Beyond Mouth Noises: Paula’s Expanding Sensitivity and Road to Therapy.
29 Oct 2024
00:34:12
Paula is a psychology student in France. Paula first noticed misophonia when she was 13 or 14 years old and felt intense emotions when hearing eating sounds. It took several years for her to discover that misophonia was a real condition. Paula's parents were supportive but initially didn't understand what she was going through. She coped by eating at home and avoiding triggering situations. Paula is now starting therapy to help manage her misophonia and hopes to understand the triggers and find long-term solutions. Just a quick note that due to technical difficulties we got cut off a little abruptly near the end. It was just around the time we were ending anyways so you get pretty much the full conversation. Hope to have Paula on again in the future to maybe talk about her new therapy.
Joannie hails from southern Minnesota. She’s in her mid-fifties and wanted to come on in part to talk about the role she thinks hormones have played throughout her life in relation to her misophonia. We go back to her normal, happy childhood, and find out how misophonia developed, how she dealt with being a single mother with misophonia and how it affected her relationship with her kids, some experiences with substance abuse and rehab. We also discuss what’s it like to live between two generations, Boomers and Generation X, and how attitudes toward mental health are different.

Nathan also triggers himself a lot so that is an interesting aspect that comes up occasionally in episodes. I have links to all of Nathan’s accounts and his store below.

Jeffrey Scott Gould (Quiet Please...) - Discovering Shared Misophonia Experiences
25 Feb 2022
01:33:59
Excited to finally bring out this conversation I had a few months ago with Jeffrey Scott Gould. You may already know the name if you’ve seen his documentary Quiet Please… The film did a lot to raise awareness for misophonia and help people with misophonia understand what they’re feeling and most importantly that they’re not alone. In this conversation we talk about why Jeffrey made the documentary, how he decided what to put in the film, the reactions for misophones, dealing with haters, infighting in the misophonia community, and of course his own life story, his coping tips, and what he’s been up to since the film. This was every bit as awesome as I was hoping and actually even exceeded that.

Michelle works in medical sales and had a pretty typical onset story, though moved around a lot being in a military family. We talk about those early years, what it’s like working in her current role visiting a lot of clients, plus her go-to earplugs, and how she deals with home life living with her boyfriend and her teenage son.

Mary and Sophie - Generational misophonia impacts and coping mechanisms.
30 Jan 2022
01:00:52
Mary doesn’t have misophonia herself, but she is the mother of someone with misophonia. She has become extremely passionate about the cause of misophonia awareness, to the point where she is working on a powerful book about it. Sophie is Mary's 87 years old mother-in-law, and has misophonia. So we get her perspective on misophonia going back obviously many, many decades right up to today. Sophie has a daughter who also has misophonia. So lots of complex perspectives here and some we’ve never discussed before, like what’s it like to date a man in his 90s who eats with dentures.

Ben is a screenwriter in Los Angeles. We talk about his very normal childhood, nothing particularly traumatic of note when his miso started. We talk about spreading the word about misophonia and how he writes misophonia into everything he works on. We talk about having other conditions like ADD and anxiety, and you’ll hear his big earplug recommendation.

This week I bring my conversation with Liz, yet another Canadian living up in Toronto. Elektra - Navigating motherhood and creativity with misophonia.
07 Jan 2022
00:51:56
This week I’m talking to Elektra, a clothing designer and mother, recently moved to LA, although at the time of this interview she was living in Philadelphia. She talks about being a child of divorced parents, with one of them being particularly dismissive of her misophonia, putting off having her own child for a while due to misophonia, working on anger, eating disorders, using mimicking, and the importance of being taken seriously.
I encourage everyone to check out the online shop of her brand Unknown Apparel at unknownapparelshop.com. I am a big advocate for supporting other misophones in their businesses and creative projects.

Denburg family - Navigating Life and Designing Spaces with Misophonia
29 Dec 2021
02:12:10
It’s the annual family episode! Last year around this time I had two episodes back to back of a mother and a daughter who both have misophonia. I decided to continue the family theme every year around the holidays and I am happy to bring this incredible episode featuring the Denburg family. It started as an interview with Alexandra, but then her parents were interested in talking about their experience with having a child with misophonia.
Alexandra grew up in North Jersey, had a pretty typical misophonia onset story, was actually bullied from an early age up even through college, and now has a successful, award-winning interior design firm. When she found out the misophonia had a name it was a revelation, as it was to her parents who just became even more supportive to the point of wanting to help others who are dealing with miso.

Nick - Exploring the Depths of Life with Sensory Sensitivities
15 Dec 2021
01:31:54
This is a conversation I’ve been thinking about lot since I recorded it. Nick lives with his wife and family, and works as a software developer, but his sound and sensory sensitivities have led to some really intense reactions and situations. There’s a lot here that’s unlike anything you've probably heard about misophonia but there’s a lot to relate to. We talk about his sound sensitivities, visuals, movement, spatial, different therapies, CBT, medication, trauma, issues his dad had, and a lot more. If you’re like me your jaw will drop in some places, tear up in others, and laugh with Nick in yet others.

Bryan - Family Dynamics and Workplace Understanding
25 Nov 2021
01:11:30
Bryan is in software consulting and is a dad with a family in Colorado. This was a special conversation for me, all my interviews are special because we all have this thing in common, but this was kind of crazy because our life situations are even more similar. We really get into some of my favorite topics like, the distance that builds up between family members when you’re growing up with Misophonia. If there’s just one thing that comes out of all these conversations is that this thing hurts and that hurt sticks a lot longer than people realize. Lots of laughs along the way to go with the raw stuff so enjoy this one!

Julia is also very into advocacy for Misophonia and runs the misophonoiamindfulness Instagram account. We talk about art therapy and her hopes to pursue neuroscience after she graduates. It’s really promising to see young people with Misophonia pursue their educations and careers with Misophonia in mind as something they want to work on.

She is a psychologist and misophonia sufferer, and parent of a misophonia sufferer, who has been pushing very hard for misophonia awareness and research since the 90s. She co-founded the Duke Misophonia Research center, and is co-director of Misophonia Education and the International Misophonia Research Network. This week it’s back to a UK episode, with Rachael. Michael O. - Facing triggers to build resistance in New Zealand.
27 Oct 2021
00:50:54
This week I have Michael, from down in New Zealand, where he lives in a place with I think about 7 other people. This one’s really interesting because though Michael definitely deals with misophonia regularly with all the usual tools, he also tries to consciously not run away immediately from the trigger. Sort of like facing it head on as much as possible to maybe build some resistance. It reminds me of the debate that goes on around exposure therapy, and here we hear Michael’s take.

Between Tia’s own misophonia, PTSD and the brother who sometimes triggering the other boy on purpose, it can be quite a lively scene at home. We get into how Tia deal’s with her misophonia, how it informs how she tries to help her son, especially in the context of other parallel issues. Plus all the usual origin stories and coping methods.

Jim is a self-published author in California. I’ve got tons of links to Jim’s work and other things we mention below in the show notes. Jim went the self-publishing route after some interesting office experiences. We talk about all that plus his misophonic saga with family throughout his life. Like many others this is the first time he’s really talked about it with someone so it’s always great to hear new stories and share knowledge in both directions.

Mary-Rachel - Navigating Misophonia with Community Support
29 Sep 2021
01:54:58
Welcome to an exciting season 5! Mary-Rachel is a casting director and producer in LA who had a miso-related breakdown following an MRI a few months ago. This conversation is a hilarious rollercoaster talking about miso and much more... growing up with miso in a well-known British family, being a single parent, life in LA, explaining it to parents, children, co-workers, and the often profanity-infused outbursts that come with the territory. This is a long one but worth it as I start the new season with a bang. Enjoy!

Pauline - Understanding Community Through Shared Struggles
18 Aug 2021
01:00:34

She just found out about misophonia a few years ago and it was a bit of a revelation, explaining some rough experiences growing up as well as coping mechanisms she instinctively came up with. We cover all that plus life with miso in the Middle East, and now moving back with her parents, who were her original triggers.

Alexandra - Pianist finds harmony in managing misophonia
04 Aug 2021
00:36:20
Alexandra is a talented pianist getting a graduate degree in piano performance. This was interesting for many reasons especially because it must be challenging to be on stage performing at a high level when a trigger could come from anywhere. We also talk about how she finally sought out treatment after a difficult time early in quarantine and how life has been since then.

Christina - Journey from misophonia discovery to therapy.
21 Jul 2021
00:57:22
This week I speak with Christina, a fashion photographer in New York/New Jersey. We start by comparing our elevator pitches for how we explain misophonia to others. We end on speculating what misophonia is. This was recorded before the latest research paper from Dr. Kumar’s group so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

David - Preemptive strategies and personal growth in Misophonia.
15 Jul 2021
00:49:36
This week I’m talking to David in New Jersey. David reached out to me last year with a paper he wrote for a university course called Early Recognition of Misophonia: A Case for Preemptive Approach. In it, he surveys recent literature and therapies and argues for trying to identify misophonia and provide therapy before it has impacts on a child’s social and educational development. You’ll hear how this is very personal to David, because he himself was impacted by the way he was treated growing up trying to deal with his misophonia. We talk about cultural components, something called dialectical behavior therapy, breathing techniques, a number of things. We’ll talk about how all David’s thinking about misophonia has evolved over time after counseling and therapy and what it has meant for his family.

Martha - Sobriety and Misophonia: A Journey of Resilience
07 Jul 2021
01:28:20
This week I have the pleasure of talking to Martha of @martharecoveringoutloud. This is a wild ride with great stories including: snapping at other kids eating, running into a street to yell at honking cab drivers, TJ Maxx (enough said), and throwing a bread basket in a restaurant with trigger sounds. And some of those are dating stories. Martha is a character who has received multiple applauses from strangers in NYC for her efforts to confront loud people. As a person who is also in recovery, she is also very active on Instagram supporting the sober community. You can find more information through her Instagram where you'll see Martha’s hilarious posts, her recovery podcast, sober apparel and a lot more. Please note there is some language here not suitable for your kids!

Hazel - Uniting Tinnitus and Misophonia Advocacy Efforts
30 Jun 2021
00:49:48
Hazel is the Director & Chief Strategist at Tinnitus Hub and Tinnitus Talk. She also has misophonia. A number of guests who’ve come on here have mentioned tinnitus so it was great to have Hazel talk about it from her perspective as a strong tinnitus advocate. We talk about what tinnitus is, how it feels to also have misophonia on top of it, and then we get into her activities advocating for tinnitus and share some lessons we can apply in the misophonia community to raise more awareness and research.

#200 - Exploring misophonia's impact on relationships and academics.
28 Aug 2024
01:13:00
Georgie is a recent neuroscience and psychology dual degree grad from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Georgie’s childhood shares many characteristics that I’ve found to be common among us, that is periods of walking on eggshells, turbulence and volatility. She also mentions other sensory sensitivities, such as visual triggers and sensitivity to vibrations. Georgie talks about her coping methods, including using white noise headphones and seeking accommodations in school. We talk about the many comorbid conditions she has been diagnosed with and medications she has taken and their effects on her misophonia. She also talks about her plans to pursue a career in clinical psychology. And of course she shares his experiences of social challenges and the shame and guilt associated with misophonia.

Jennifer H. - From Chaos to Clarity: A Misophonia Journey
24 Jun 2021
00:52:36
Jennifer just found out about the podcast after going through what she describes as a “misophonia episode” in January. It got her to seek help in many places and she is now fortunately in a much better place. We talked about the effect of the pandemic on us, a year into it. We also go back deep into her past and her experiences as a child in a pretty chaotic family life and how she hid in her room a lot. We also talk about her many career paths and the various therapies she has used to help her get through since her episode at the start of the year. You can check out her art too at froghappy.com

Andrea - Founding MisoMatch amidst Pandemic Challenges
16 Jun 2021
00:49:20
Andrea is the founder of misomatch.com, a platform for helping misophones connect with each other, and find resources to help them deal with misophonia. But there’s a lot more to Andrea! We dig into her history of misophonia dealing family and friends, particularly this past year when she saw her usually quiet working hours at home interrupted by everyone being with her in quarantine. Sound familiar? We talk about the inspiration for mismatch, what she hopes it will become for our community. We also get into another hot topic in our community, how to discuss misophonia with our kids.

Mercede Erfanian - Exploring Misophonia's Neuroscience and ASMR Connection.
09 Jun 2021
00:59:20
Emergency pod! This is a special episode with Mercede Erfanian, one of the co-authors of the very recent paper, "The motor basis for misophonia", led by Dr. Sukhbinder Kumar. Mercede has been studying the neuroscience of misophonia for years and has many projects in the works to hopefully lead to developing more therapies. We talk all about the most recent results of her work and others researching the neuroscience behind misophonia in a way that is very approachable for non-scientists. We also talk about the strong connection between psychology and neuroscience, comorbid conditions, the neuroscience of ASMR, hyperacusis and much more.

Paul - Navigating parenting and validation through education
02 Jun 2021
01:00:20
I loved this conversation with Paul because it turns out we have a lot in common, and actually through the conversation Paul asked me a lot of things so you get a peek into my experiences a little more than usual, if you care about that! We talk about parenting as a misophone, especially during a pandemic, how to explain it to your kids, how to explain it to adults, Paul uses ear plugs a lot and has advice on them, plus we talk about the role of music in his life and how it relates to misophonia.

26 May 2021
01:27:19
Dr. Jane Gregory is a clinical psychologist and misophonia researcher at Oxford University... she also has misophonia herself! Find her on the web and social media at the links below. We go over too many things to list in this almost 90 minute episode, including therapies she uses in her practice, the misophonia research she is conducting at the Department of Experimental Psychology at Oxford, and of course her misophonia life story. Part of her work centers around the S-5 questionnaire to measure misophonia. We actually go over my results from the questionnaire and you can follow along with the chart posted here and in the show notes!

Natalie is in Austin Texas, living alone, now working alone at home like many of us. In this episode we talk a lot about her childhood and family situation growing up. Natalie is really open about all the chaotic things that went on around her, anxiety disorders that developed, untreated trauma, and how she now handles her miso as an adult.
Content warning that there is some talk of experienced sexual assault in this episode.

Jennifer A. - Navigating life changes due to Misophonia
12 May 2021
00:53:56
Jennifer recently left the city, quit her job and started homeschooling her daughter, who is also showing signs of misophonia. We talk about all that, and her husband with whom she has had many ups and downs due to misophonia. Plus of course we go back to her early days growing up and being teased, and what her family thinks of it now. Great episode that covers a lot of things that people are dealing with, especially parents and relationships with misophonic people.

Patrick - Music Student's Journey Through Sound Sensitivity
05 May 2021
00:47:42
This week I’m talking to Patrick, a musician currently in college studying music therapy. Patrick is one of many creative people I’ve had on the show and there are lots more coming up this season, I love having artists on. We talk today about how is mom might have miso, how his older sister would tease him about it, and his search for a therapist. This is the first time Patrick has talked to anyone publicly about miso and as always I’m grateful to see people coming out and sharing their story.

In 2011, the New York Times published an article that would change the course of misophonia's history and catapult it into wider awareness. It's an article that comes up a lot in my conversations because it's often the first article that made people feel really validated. And they felt that they could share it with others and point to it as something that is being taken seriously by a place like the New York Times. I was able to catch up with the author, Joyce Cohen, 10 years later and reflect on that time, going on the Today show, how she ended up using the term misophonia, and more...
Couple of notes: the sound quality is not the best because I was recording a live phone call from a regular microphone. Also, a warning that the topic of suicide comes up because one of her other articles does deal with a tragedy involving someone taking their own life.

This week I’m talking to Drake (not that one), who lives in Florida currently, with one of her biggest triggers her mom. She talks about her plans to start a fresh life in a new city, dealing with some trauma growing up, and many of the other experiences we share, like discovering this is a real thing, and how we try to explain it to others.

Mara - Exploring Misophonia Through Art and Identity
07 Apr 2021
00:46:28
Today I had the great privilege to talk to Mara, a rock artist in North Carolina. We talk about trans issues, dissociation and reassociation, complex trauma, PTSD, her very complex relationship with her family, and lots of insight Mara has learned from her experiences. We also talk about her art, which you must see on her instagram, link below. Also below you’ll find the books we discuss on the show, plus Mara’s Spotify playlist of a very curated batch of songs she finds considers “safe” for her miso.
This episode deals with some pretty intense things so I just wanna warn up front there is some talk of complex trauma, ptsd, and a few bad words thrown in.
