Mishlei 25:16-17 - Don't Make Your Friend Vomit (Part 2)
Length: 36 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/12/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing the main approach from yesterday. We delved a bit deeper into the derech nigleh, trying to understand exactly what makes a person sick of his friend's presence. But our main goal was to focus on the derech nistar, which I WISH we had more time to explore! I'm especially happy with the idea we learned from Zerachiah Chein.
Someone recently asked me whether I find new chidushim in Mishlei. The question had the vibe of, "Don't you get bored?" I answered that we ALWAYS find new chidushim and we rarely get to more than a handful of meforshim before we have to move on. This week was yet another example.

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/11/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pair of pesukim that might have been the inspiration for Ben Franklin's quip: "Guests, like fish, stink after three days." Shlomo ha'Melech's version, however, employs a gustatory mashal rather than an olfactory one. We developed one approach in-depth and a second approach after that. I'm most curious to see what the meforshim say tomorrow by way of the derech nistar.

Length: 37 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/8/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began with a quick review of yesterday's approaches, then moved on to the meforshim. We were pleased to see them echo our ideas, and to see how differently they took the central mashal. I'm excited to see how our theory of the "Anshei Chizkiyahu" chapters of Mishlei develops as we learn more from this section.

Length: 30 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/1/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning a pasuk which seemed obvious but also didn't indicate any clear context for its application. Despite having a shorter amount of time for shiur, we were able to come up with several fruitful approaches. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll check out what the meforshim have to say.

לֹא יֶאֱהַב לֵץ הוֹכֵחַ לוֹ, אֶל חֲכָמִים לֹא יֵלֵךְ:
Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (12/19/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's ideas and coming up with some new approaches. We then delved into the Malbim's commentary here and on the mitzvah of tochachah. I don't know about everyone else in the shiur, but I feel like this is the biggest level-up I've had in my understanding of a leitz in a long time. I now want to learn through ALL the pesukim about leitzim using the Malbim's commentary. Perhaps we'll attempt to do that after my break next week.

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (12/18/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning what looked like a VERY obvious pasuk about a familiar Mishleic archetype. Thankfully, the strange litotes (look it up!) in the first half of the pasuk served as a foothold which enabled us to figure out several fruitful approaches. We began learning the meforshim, but we'll continue tomorrow (בג"ה).

Mishlei 16:19 - The Cost of Doing Business with the Haughty
טוֹב שְׁפַל רוּחַ אֶת [עֲנָוִים] (עניים) מֵחַלֵּק שָׁלָל אֶת גֵּאִים
Length: 1 hour 19 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (12/16/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned the sequel to last week's pasuk about arrogance. Instead of warning about BEING haughty, this one warned about associating with the haughty, even (or especially) if profit is involved. Not only did we come up with some nice ideas, but they ended up being almost exactly what our favorite meforshim came up with! Really important ideas, especially for those who are thinking about joining some venture with an arrogant person (and justifying it because of the gains they think they'll make).

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (12/12/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing and refining some of yesterday's approaches. We then learned three approaches from the meforshim: Metzudas David, Rabbeinu Yonah, and R' Sheshes ben Yitzchak Gerondi. It was fascinating how their different takes on the first 1st half determined their understanding of the chidush and the practical takeaway.

Mishlei 16:18 - Pride Goeth Before Breaking and Stumbling
לִפְנֵי שֶׁבֶר גָּאוֹן, וְלִפְנֵי כִשָּׁלוֹן גֹּבַהּ רוּחַ:
Length: 1 hour 24 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (12/9/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned what is probably one of the most oft-quoted well, oft-paraphrased) pesukim in the world. The main thrust was obvious enough. The trick was to find the chidushim (new insights) - and that's what we did! We came up with several of our own approaches and developed two based on the meforshim, all supported with real-world examples from current events.
