In this episode: meeting yourself where you are, mindful check-in, breath awareness, letting go, non-judgmental observation

Episode Summary

In this guided meditation from the Mindful Fire Legends community meeting, Adam Coelho leads a practice of radical self-acceptance - checking in with body and mind exactly as they are, without trying to change anything. Listeners are guided through breath awareness and gentle redirection of a wandering mind.

About the Host

Adam Coelho is the host of the Mindful FIRE Podcast and founder of the Mindful Fire Legends - a weekly community gathering for people on the path to financial independence. He leads guided meditations and conversations to support mindful, intentional living.

Resources & Books Mentioned

Key Takeaways

  • Meeting yourself where you are means observing your body and mind with curiosity - acknowledging "right now, it's like this" without trying to fix or change anything.
  • The breath is a reliable anchor: each in-breath is a new beginning, each out-breath a chance to let go.
  • When the mind wanders, the practice is simply to notice and return — no criticism, just gentle redirection back to the present moment.
  • A brief check-in at the start and end of practice builds self-awareness and helps you notice subtle shifts in body and mind.

124 : Meditation : Space of Refuge31 Oct 202300:18:31

In this episode, we will explore a 12-minute guided meditation to find peace, ease, and a sense of refuge in the present moment.

Today's meditation focuses on creating space in our lives. Amidst the challenges and difficulties happening in the world, such as war, layoffs, and economic instability, we will cultivate a space of refuge. This space allows us to leave everything behind and simply be with ourselves.

To begin, we intentionally let go of our worries and concerns, and we tune into our body, mind, and heart to understand how we are feeling in this moment.

After spending some time in this space of refuge, we will transition into a practice of loving-kindness and compassion. We will first direct these qualities towards ourselves and then extend them to all beings in the world.

I hope you find joy in this meditation practice.

122 : Meditation : Space & Compassion Amidst Suffering17 Oct 202300:19:44

With so much suffering happening all around us it's easy to get overwhelmed by difficult thoughts and emotions.

Unfortunately, mindfulness isn't a magic solution to remove the suffering in the world. But it does offer a different way of relating to the suffering and difficult emotions we are experiencing within ourselves.

Today's guided meditation offers a chance to create some space within ourselves to allow whatever we're feeling to be there and to keep coming back to the simplicity of the breath.

Then we shift to practicing some compassion for ourselves and the millions of people suffering around the world.

121 : The Power of Leading Your Life With Empathy with Kerri Jacobs06 Oct 202301:00:31

On today's episode. I'm joined by my friend, Kerri Jacobs. Who's actually a former manager of mine. I'm really excited to have her on the podcast.

Kerri Jacobs has been leading high performing teams at Google in London, New York city, and now the Bay area for over 12 years. Her obsession with empathy and leadership and inclusion in every aspect of life led her to create the program, leading with empathy and to roll it out to leaders at Google.

Kerri is also a member of the 2021 class of Stanford University's CCARE in collaboration with ACA's applied compassion training for architects and ambassadors of applied compassion. A Scot from penny cook. She used to read books, watch films, and see a lot of Broadway shows. But these days, mainly anxiously scrolls, Twitter, and comfort eats.

In her life before business, she taught dance sang in piano bars and wrote a dance and education syllabus for Scottish education curriculum. For primary school teachers. Kerri's facilitation style is not to lecture. She shares horror stories and LOL worthy moments from her own life as a manager, parent, and partner, and keeps it as real as one can, when video conferencing from a garage.

In this episode, Kerri and I explore what empathy is and why it's more important than ever to bring empathy into our interactions with the people we work with.   And how really small changes, really just being more thoughtful about how we're interacting with those we work with and those that work for us can make a huge difference and making people feel seen, heard, and cared for. Kerri also shares a number of practices that we can use to create greater empathy and connection with those that we work with.

And she shares how leading with empathy in this way can really not only impact your relationship with that one person, but can also transform your business and the success you're having as a business.

Kerri and I explore how she used to be super skeptical about all of this mindfulness stuff and how she actually came to understand the value of it in her own life when she found herself physically and mentally burnt out from work.  How mindfulness really helped her in her recovery and led her to explore and create more meaning in her life and her work through this leading with empathy program.

116 : Meditation : Train Your Mind to Spot Opportunity05 Sep 202300:22:57

In this episode: Guided affirmations practice to speed up your journey to FI

One way to speed up your journey to financial independence is to train yourself to spot opportunities and to take action when you find them. This could be a new job, reconnecting with an old friend or colleague or trying a side hustle. When your mind is ready to see opportunities, the possibilities are endless.

Today’s guided meditation trains your mind to be ready to see opportunities everywhere and to take action to move your life in the direction you want. I do this practice everyday and it’s impact on my life cannot be overstated. During a time when I was at one of the lowest points in my adult life this practice helped me train my mind to be ready to see opportunity and to take action to move my life forward. I’ll share more about the full story of that in the near future.

Today’s meditation is an affirmations practice, which I think of as practicing the thoughts & beliefs that I want to embody in my life. This type of practice can be used to practice any thoughts or beliefs we want to show up with in our lives, as we did in another affirmations practice I shared previously.

In this particular meditation we will focus on practicing the thoughts:

  1. The world is abundant with opportunity. My life and work are abundant with opportunity.
  2. I take action in my life, which leads to learning progress and growth.

This practice takes advantage of the fact that our brains are predictive. Our brains are constantly predicting what is most likely to happen and setting in motion the thoughts, perceptions, emotions and even physiological responses for what is expected.

I like to think of it this way...We’re telling ourselves stories about how our life is going to be and then acting out those stories. The good news is that we can use this feature of our brain to be intentional about the stories we tell ourselves and put our predicting brain to work for us.

I hope you enjoy this powerful practice. I plan to share more content around the idea of putting your predicting brain to work for you as you pursue financial independence. Subscribe to our email list to be notified when this becomes available.

110 : Meditation : Drop Into This Moment25 Jul 202300:23:45

In this episode : Guided meditation to help you drop into this moment.

Often our busy minds feel like the choppy waves of the ocean during a storm. But even during a storm, if you drop below the surface just 10-15 feet, the water is calmer and quieter.

I like to think of meditation as a practice of dropping in, dropping below the busy and tumultuous waves of my mind, into the calmer, quieter peace of this moment.

That's what this practice is all about. I share simple guidance to help you drop into this moment, so you can enjoy the simplicity, peace and ease that exists below the surface.

We finish up with some gratitude and drop into the feeling of gratitude in our bodies.

In this episode, we talked about Dan's journey of growth and learning in both his personal and professional life. As a talented musician and engineer, Dan shared his insights on deliberate practice and how he continually improves his skills, even with a busy schedule.

We also dove into his career at Google, where he made a switch from sales to engineering and is currently pursuing a second Bachelor's degree in Engineering and Computer Science. Throughout the episode, Dan shared valuable wisdom and insight, and the conversation felt like two old friends catching up.

About Dan Arwady

106 : Meditation : Resting in the Simplicity of This Moment27 Jun 202300:22:02

In this episode: resting in this moment meditation

This guided meditation practice invites you to set everything aside for a little while and rest in the incredible simplicity of this moment.

We all have so much going on in our lives: things to do, things to plan, things we’re worried about, kids and family to take care of, jobs to do, etc. The list is endless.

However, we can choose to set aside everything that has come before and everything that is yet to come and just drop into this timeless moment of now, if only for one breath.

That’s what we’re practicing with this guided meditation. It’s an invitation to rest in the simplicity of having nothing to do besides being aware of just this in-breath and just this out-breath, exactly as they are, moment by moment and breath by breath.

I hope you enjoy this mediation.

104 : Meditation : Grounding In The Now13 Jun 202300:23:28

In this episode : Grounding meditation

"Imagine that your body and even your mind are rooted, grounded, planted here in this spot while the crazy world just keeps on spinning." - Adam Coelho

This quote captures the essence of today’s grounding meditation practice.

In today's world, it often feels like we're caught in a strong storm, being blown in many different directions, making it hard to maintain our balance and stability. Mindfulness helps us regain our stability by grounding us in the timeless moment of now.

This practice invites you to let go of everything happening outside, in the world, and instead to focus on grounding in this moment, right now, like a tree with deep roots that can withstand the winds of the storm.

I hope you enjoyed this meditation.

In this episode: mindfulness, taking time off work, managing expectations, self-limiting beliefs, lessons learned from sabbaticals, and rest with Julia LI

I'm taking three months off work and recently talked to Julia Li about my plans for this time off.

She's had experience taking a sabbatical and gave me some great insights and advice on how to make the most of this time and manage my expectations.

We talked about common self-limiting beliefs and guilt around taking time off and how to overcome them.

Julia also shared how lessons from her sabbatical continued to reveal themselves even after the time off had ended.

Guest Bio

Julia and I are good friends who have known each other for a while. Julia has been a guest on my Mindful Fire Podcast four times now, where we've covered topics like taking sabbaticals and pivoting from tech to sustainability.

In our latest episode, we discuss my upcoming three months off work and Julia shares her insights and advice from her own experiences taking time off. It's amazing to have such a supportive friend to talk to about this. I'm excited to see what comes from this break!

Key Takeaways

  • Acknowledge that time off is finite and get curious with thoughts and feelings around it.
  • Rest is important and it's okay to take breaks without judgment.
  • Lessons from sabbaticals continue to reveal themselves even after the time off has ended.
  • Guilt and self-limiting beliefs around taking time off are common and can be overcome.
  • Manage expectations and don't put pressure on yourself to use the time off in a specific way.
  • The quality of experience during time off is based on being present in each moment, not on the quantity of time.

98 : Sabbatical Series #1 - Envisioning & Preparing for 3 Months Off Work : Adam Interviewed by David Moltz09 May 202300:54:39

In this episode: Envisioning 3 months off work, Mindfulness, Burnout, Learning to Rest & more - Adam Interviewed by David Moltz

Today, I’m kicking off something a bit different. Last year, around this time, I took a three-month break from work and decided to chronicle my experience by recording an episode before, during, and after. I invited my friends, Julia Li and David Moltz, to interview me at different points throughout the journey.

In this four-part series, you’ll hear what’s going on in my head and in my life before, during and towards the end of this 3 months off of work.

On today’s episode, I’m interviewed by one of my best friends, David Moltz about how I came to realize I needed the time off, how I overcame fear to ask for it and how I’m thinking about making the most of this 3 months off.

Note: The audio is slightly wonky in this episode. My microphone had an issue and I got help to fix it as best I could. Thanks for understanding.

  • Mindfulness can help develop self-awareness to prevent burnout
  • Asking for extended time off can be difficult, but it's important to prioritize personal wellbeing
  • Taking a longer break, such as a sabbatical, can provide the necessary space and time to recharge and prevent burnout
  • Broaching the subject of extended time off with a manager can be easier if there is an existing good relationship and open communication

97 : Meditation : A Twist on Visualizing Your Ideal Life02 May 202300:20:01

In this episode: Envision your ideal future in vivid detail with a surprise ending.

In today's guided meditation session, we will delve into the art of envisioning the life of our dreams.

This practice involves mindfulness, which is the state of being fully present in the moment without any judgment. By being mindful, we allow ourselves to experience the present moment without getting caught up in worries about the past or future.

Once we have achieved a calm state of mind, we will proceed to visualize the life we want. We will imagine ourselves living out our ideal life, feeling as if it is already a reality. We will focus on the details of this life, including the sights, sounds, and feelings.

But that is not all. After we have fully immersed ourselves in this visualization, we will shift our attention in a way that may surprise you.

I hope you enjoy this guided meditation.

93 : Meditation : Experiencing Impermanence In Your Body04 Apr 202300:18:02

In this episode: Body scan meditation to experience impermanence.

Impermanence - the fact of life that everything is constantly changing and nothing stays the same for long - can be best observed and experienced within our own body.

During my 10 day silent Vipassana meditation retreat in Northern California, I truly experienced the impermanence of life.

The practice of body scan meditation, where we were aware of each part of the body from head to toe for 10 hours per day, made it clear that even something that seems fixed, say a pain in my shoulder, is actually changing and moving continuously.

Impermanence is all around us, and it was mirrored by the mountain scene I walked past each day, which was different every time.

I invite you to experience the ever changing nature of your body and life through this guided body scan meditation.

89 : Meditation : Finding a Space of Refuge in This Moment07 Mar 202300:18:15

In this episode: 12 minute guided meditation to find peace, ease and a space of refuge in this moment.

Today’s meditation is a practice of creating space in our lives. We practice cultivating a space of refuge in our busy lives amidst all the challenging and difficult things happening in our world (war, layoffs, the economy, etc).

In this space of refuge we can just leave everything at the door and just be with ourselves in this moment.

We begin this meditation by intentionally leaving everything at the door and we connect with how you are feeling in this moment in your body, mind and heart.

After some time resting in this space of refuge we transition into some loving kindness, compassion practice for ourselves and then extend it out to all beings everywhere.

I hope you enjoy this practice.

87 : Meditation : Let This Breath Be Enough with Adam Coelho21 Feb 202300:24:09

Today's meditation explores the question: What is enough?

This is one of the core questions that drove me to create this podcast.

So many of us in the financial independence retire early community are trying to grow our wealth so we can reach some arbitrary number, assuming that once we get there, we will achieve freedom and everything will change.

But the question is, what is enough?

So often, when people reach their desired number, they think they need more or just a little more time, what’s often called "one more year" syndrome.

Today we explore this question of what is enough in a meditation, where we practice allowing each breath to be enough, just as it is.

I hope you enjoy this meditation.

85 : Meditation : Taking In The Good with Adam Coelho07 Feb 202300:17:37

Take a moment to appreciate how far you come in your life with this new guided meditation by Adam Coelho.

So often people race from thing to thing trying mightily to reach their goal...

But once they get there...

They just look immediately past that goal to the next goal

Never stopping

Never fully appreciating:

  • How far they've come
  • All the things they've learned
  • All the things they've overcome

To be who they are

Right here. Right now

This practice invites us to take in the good and appreciate all the wonderful things we have done and achieved in our life.

Meditation Overview

  • We begin by taking a moment to check in with yourself and to observe the sensations of breathing in your body.
  • I then encourage you to reflect on your life five years ago and all you've achieved since then
  • Then you'll explore something from the last 12 months that you are proud of
  • Finally, I remind you that your brain is predictive and that by paying attention to the good things in your life, you will be able to experience more of them.

I hope you enjoy this guided meditation which was inspired by my podcast conversation  with my friend Nirav Shah on episode 64.
