Evolution of Mike | 62714 Sep 202600:42:20

Back from Milan and Punkadeka Festival, so I get into the trip and the food first. Then your calls. A listener in Athens asks if you can be a real fan of a band you have never seen live. A caller who watched our Warped Tour set asks about my voice, so I go through sleep, hydration, and how I prep before a show. Hannah in Carolina asks how my songwriting has changed.

Plus a letter from a fan in Italy, and Jake in Texas turning a room in his house into a free venue called the Tile Room.

mxpx.com has tour dates. Orlando Warped Tour November 15. Australia December 3, 4 and 5 for Good Things Festival in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. New album, Living in the Chaos, is coming.

623 Si Short - The Jack Knives17 Aug 202600:36:05

Si Short from the Jack Knives is my guest this week. He grew up in England, moved to the States at 22, and now lives in Southern California. He took 10 years off from bands, started writing again in Hawaii, and the Jack Knives grew out of Thursday night jams into a fully independent band playing House of Blues and the Fillmore.

We get into building a following brick by brick instead of buying followers, what streaming data tells you about where to play, why live streams reach a totally different audience, and how the band balances tours with day jobs and families. Si also explains why he pushes the band to promote a record for a year instead of three months, and tells the story of getting his bass player turned away at the Canadian border before a Vancouver show.

The new Jack Knives album, Negative Spaces, is out November 6 on Fumie Records, produced by Pete Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls. This fall they play shows with Dave Hause and The Mermaid, headline dates in Germany, Austria and England, and a run with the Bouncing Souls, the Flatliners and Suicide Machines. Find everything at thejackknives.com.

My guest this week is Mike Frazier, a singer-songwriter from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. He lives in Seattle now. The first time he was here was his first podcast ever, 10 years ago. We talk about the two years of symptoms nobody could figure out, the brain surgery, and April Days, the album he wrote after it. He plays April Days live in the studio. Make sure you guys follow Mike Frazier VA, and check out April Days.

MxPx is on all the Warped Tours coming up. Montreal is August 21, then Mexico City and Orlando. We're in Milan September 5 for Punkadeka Festival, our only European show. mxpx.com, anything we have going on is right there.

621 Bill Stevenson Descendents / ALL03 Aug 202601:02:45

Bill Stevenson is on the show. He's the drummer for legendary punk bands Descendents and ALL, he also played in Black Flag, and he produced our first live album, MxPx - At the Show. We get into songwriting, how he stays fast behind the kit at 62, the early Black Flag days, and taking his son Miles out on tour with Jon Snodgrass and Miles' band All My Senses.

Bill, Miles, and Snodgrass are out this August, running from Indianapolis and Chicago up to Tillsonburg, Ontario for a full ALL set at Buddies Fest, then Detroit. Descendents tour this fall with Social Distortion and the Chats.

620 The Dwarves | Blag Dahlia27 Jul 202600:54:38

Blag Dahlia returns for his third time on the podcast. The Dwarves have a new album out called Jenkem, and Blag explains exactly what the title refers to, which I immediately regret.

From there we run through the worst heat wave in European history, arguing about flat earth with your own bass player, the Stray Cats and the clean rockabilly problem, why image decided which punk bands got big and which didn't, AI and where an artist draws the line, and the difference between a person and the role he plays on stage. Yeah, it's a lot.

619 Larry and His Flask20 Jul 202600:24:54

My guest this week is Larry and His Flask. Got three of the guys: Ian Cook, Jeshua Marshall, and Jamin Marshall. If you don't know them, they're an Americana punk band out of Bend, Oregon, and they're back after seven years off the road. We talk about busking, how they went from an electric punk band to an acoustic one, and the 3 shows in March that turned into 30. Make sure you guys follow Larry and His Flask, and check out larryandhisflasks.com.

And check out mxpx.com. We've got merch, we've got vinyl. We're at Warped Tour in Long Beach, California this weekend. We're on all the Warped Tours. We're in Milan September 5 for Punkadeka Festival. mxpx.com.

618 What's Up Doc?13 Jul 202600:41:47

Gearing up for Warped Tour Long Beach, and how Warped Tour meet-and-greets work.

Cyrus calls in with questions about our documentaries, It Came From Bremerton, B-Movie, and Both Ends Burning, and I walk through how each one came together. Shannon calls in and sings her own version of "Wrecking Hotel Rooms," and it's great. JJ from Alaska asks about the new Sterling by Music Man Stingray bass and what makes it play so well.

617 The Happy Birthday Episode06 Jul 202600:42:14

Happy birthday to MxPx! But age doesn't matter unless you're a cheese or so they say. Mike marks it by telling the full story of how the band got started in 1992: a rented Flying V, a garage-sale snare drum, and a drummer who'd barely played before their first practice. One week later, MxPx played their first show ever, a backyard barbecue, and played the whole set twice in one day. Mike also answers a longtime fan question about the real story behind "Wrecking Hotel Rooms," co-written with Mark Hoppus. Your voicemails and news on the upcoming album Living in the Chaos.

616 Punk Rock Pizza Boy29 Jun 202600:39:26

What is up with you guys? We got a great episode this week. We played Warped Tour in DC, I played the World Cup fan zone in downtown Bremerton, the town I grew up in, and we announced the new MxPx album, Living in the Chaos. Then I got into your voicemails and ended up telling a bunch of stories about how I got into punk back in the day, the local Bremerton scene, and the bass. Thanks for calling in. Keep them coming.

614 Summer Slammer15 Jun 202600:49:30

I'm catching up on your voicemails, podcast stickers are here, and MxPx is on every Vans Warped Tour date this summer and fall. Amelia asked what video games I play, which took me from Pong through Zelda, Skate or Die, Mortal Kombat, Madden, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater. I was a fan before we were ever on the soundtrack. Rich asked which bass got the first Pokinatcha Punk pick guard, so I go through my StingRay history, from the first one I put on layaway to my Sterling by Music Man signature bass. David Herrera (no relation) called asking for some advice for his son who's playing bass at 16: keep it simple, keep it fun, and be consistent every day. Nate's car stereo ate his CD, which got me telling the story of microwaving rejected mixes during Panic and how one of those CDs became the album art. And Frank asked why I switched from fingers to a pick (I smashed my finger in a bus door).

611 No Doubt In My Mind25 May 202600:33:50

No Doubt's been doing their Sphere residency out in Vegas, and man, it gives me FOMO! Telling the whole story of when MxPx opened for them way back in 1997, our first bus tour ever. That bus got stuck on an elevated road and that was the last time we had it. The three feet of stage we had to play on in front of the drums. The British tour manager. The band themselves (always 100% awesome).

Plus voicemails: Jason wants to know if Tony Kanal ripped off my look, a longtime fan calls in with a really thoughtful take on the Michael drama and a Wilco rec that gets me going about A.M. and Summerteeth, and a Star Wars debate that Robbie Aaron from Oceans Away calls in to agree on.

Upcoming live dates:

June 12 - Bremerton, WA - Free Mike Herrera solo acoustic show at Quincy Square (FIFA World Cup 2026 Bremerton Fan Zone Kick-Off Celebration)

June 13-14 - Vans Warped Tour Washington, DC

July 25-26 - Vans Warped Tour Long Beach, CA

August 21-22 - Vans Warped Tour Montreal, QC

August 22 - Goldfinger at the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, CA (with The Vandals, The Suicide Machines, Pulley, and sullvn)

September 5 - Punkadeka Festival, Milan, Italy

September 12-13 - Vans Warped Tour Mexico City

November 14-15 - Vans Warped Tour Orlando, FL

Sat down with Jesse Goodwin, who runs Fourth Corner Punk Fest in Bellingham, Washington. Pennywise, Bouncing Souls, Suicide Machines, and The Vandals are headlining July 18 and 19.

Jesse walks through the lineup (also playing are Good Riddance, Authority Zero, Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Diesel Boy, Bite Me Bambi, The Dollheads, War on Women, and Piñata Protest) and to talk about how he ended up running a punk festival.

We get into year one at Evil Bikes (Face to Face, Strung Out, Teenage Bottlerocket, Guttermouth), the workload nobody warns you about, why Bellingham gets overlooked by touring bands and the ticket-bot mess we are all dealing with.

Fourth Corner Punk Fest is July 18 and 19 at Evil Bikes in Bellingham, WA. All ages.

608 Star Wars Lore and More04 May 202600:37:21

May the 4th be with you. Brand new episode 608. Got into Star Wars this week - the original trilogy versus the prequels. Four, five, six are the movies I grew up on. That's the trilogy, will die on that hill. Tried to explain what an Ewok was to my kid the other day. Best I could do was little baby bear with a blaster. Pretty proud of that one. Plus a Bob Dylan show at the KeyArena that made me rethink changing up melodies live, and a bunch of tour dates coming up. Voicemails this week: - Jonah from Orange County on how we pick a set list from this deep a catalog - Jerome from Los Angeles on Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard, and "Move to Bremerton" on Dawson's Creek - Angie with a wild message - Rich with sticker giveaway and cross-promo ideas - Aaron from Florida on being at Tony Sly's very last show MxPx songs in the conversation: "Set a Fire," "One Zero Zero," "For Always," "Stay Up All Night," "Let's Ride," "Secret Weapon," "Not Today," "Ready to Rage," "Move to Bremerton," "Southbound." Bands and artists that come up: Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard ("I Will Follow You into the Dark"), They Might Be Giants, Pearl Jam, Joey Cape (Lagwagon - Trashed), Tony Sly (No Use for a Name - More Betterness), New Found Glory, Pennywise, Descendents, NOFX, Rancid, Operation Ivy, Bayside, Bob Dylan. Where we'll be: - Goldfinger at Slam Dunk Festival, UK - two shows - Solo show at the World Cup fan zone, downtown Bremerton, WA - June 12 (Friday, 5 p.m., 4th Street) - MxPx at Warped Tour Washington DC - June 14 - Pacific Northwest show, end of August (announcement coming) - MxPx headlining Punkadeka Festival, Milan, Italy - September 5 - More Warped Tour dates through the summer - Goldfinger tour dates at goldfingermusic.com Chapters: 0:00 May the 4th + Star Wars Rant (Original Trilogy vs Prequels) 9:58 Tour Dates: Slam Dunk, Bremerton World Cup, Warped Tour, Punkadeka Italy 12:49 Voicemail: Jonah from Orange County - Picking the Set List 16:53 Voicemail: Jerome from LA - Death Cab, Dawson's Creek, Ben Gibbard 19:48 Voicemail: Angie - The Sweetest Save 20:40 Voicemail: Rich - Stickers and Cross-Promotion Ideas 26:19 Voicemail: Aaron from Florida - Tony Sly's Last Show 33:24 Politics with Bob and Sign-Off --------------------- Subscribe on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/@mikeherreravideo?sub_confirmation=1 Questions or comments? 607 Think Funny27 Apr 202600:36:48

This week I'm flying solo on the pod with show announcements and a round of your voicemails.

Free Subscriber Sticker Link: https://forms.gle/kwYDM93UvCGgCdhp9 (While Supplies Last)

Tour news includes a solo acoustic set at the World Cup fan zone in downtown Bremerton on Friday, June 12 (free as far as I know), all the MxPx Warped Tour dates, and a show coming up at Punkadeka Festival in Milan on September 5.

I also talk about the Goldfinger drum heads in Seattle that everyone signed except me and why I had to clear that up.

Your voicemails cover a few things: new songs on Warped Tour, waiting on a signature bass, why we still do free post-show meet and greets, and why so many stand-up comedians are MxPx fans.

I shout out a few comedians I'm into, including Lee Hardin, Ian Fidance, Anthony Jeselnik, Adam Ray, and Scott Losse, and we close on the question that gives the episode its title: how do you think funny?

606 Reach Out All Night20 Apr 202601:01:32

Mike just got back from Denver and he's not done with your voicemails. Episode 606 wraps up the meet-and-greet conversation from Episode 604 with fan stories that span 1995 to today, plus cover song what-ifs, Screeching Weasel split ideas, show intros, and turning 40.

Fresh off the Mission Ballroom in Denver with MxPx, Goldfinger, Zebrahead, and Homegrown, Mike opens with upcoming Warped Tour dates, a new album update, the Punkadeka Festival in Milan on September 5, and a Pacific Northwest show coming at the end of August (TBA). Then it's another round of voicemails responding to Episode 604's meet-and-greet moment, with fans from all over sharing what they actually saw at those shows. Mike also gets into the real story behind Left Coast Live, why his Orange Creamsicle Sterling by Music Man hasn't made it into an MxPx set yet, cover songs that almost were (The Clampdown, Highway to Hell), and what On the Cover 3 might look like. Plus: Mike gives himself a D in Spanish, shares his method for breaking creative blocks, breaks down the psychology of show intros, and talks turning 40 with no party.

605 You Spoke Up - The Pod Community Responds13 Apr 202601:05:26

Episode 605 opens with Mike addressing the wave of community response to last week's meet and greet voicemail, making clear this isn't a pile-on. It's a conversation.

This week: Mike opens with a direct message to Michael, apologizing for how big the story blew up and inviting him to come on the podcast. Then: voicemail after voicemail from fans who were at the Charlotte show, The NorVa, Nashville, Chicago's Metro, Anaheim, DC, and San Francisco, all sharing their own meet and greet experiences and perspective on what went down. Callers include an attorney who was in the Charlotte line, a fan who hit the driving range with Mike in 1999 (and remembers Ghoti Hook as the opener), members of Too Bad Eugene, and Hannah from LA, whose question about Mike's background setup closes out the episode with a full show-and-tell tour. Also: New MxPx album update, and the end of the Find a Way Home era.

UPCOMING MxPx SHOWS:

Jun 12: Mike Herrera Solo Outdoor acoustic show, downtown Bremerton, WA (FIFA World Cup fan zone)

Vans Warped Tour 2026: DC (Jun 13-14), and all remaining dates. See mxpx.com.

604 AITAH For Ruining Everything? A Scathing Review06 Apr 202600:40:46

Solo episode. One very critical voicemail, one very fun one, and one about books. Plus: East Coast tour is done, Denver is next, and new MxPx album is getting close. This week: The Find a Way Home Tour with The Ataris wraps up after DC, Norfolk, Charlotte, and Charleston. Mike recaps all four shows and explains why Charlotte might have been the best of the run. Then Michael from the Charlotte meet and greet calls in with a detailed, point-by-point critique of Mike's personality and the podcast, and Mike responds at full length. Jay Gwak (AI Mike) from New York checks in about the DC show, the GSF pin and certificate, pitches a Chick Magnet merch idea, and gets Mike talking about his new baby chicks (Mac and Cheese). Derek from Kentucky calls in a two-parter: first asking about an MxPx book, then asking what Mike is reading. Answer: Blake Crouch and a book called Enshittification.

Also: Bob got sick and missed Charlotte, the stickers didn't make it, and Mike is not done processing Michael's voicemail.

UPCOMING MxPx SHOWS: Apr 11: Mission Ballroom, Denver, CO (w/ Goldfinger, Zebrahead, Home Grown) Vans Warped Tour 2026: DC (Jun 13–14), Long Beach (late Jul), Montreal (late Aug), Mexico City (Sep 13), Orlando (Nov 14–15) Sep 5: Punkadeka Festival, Milan, Italy (exclusive European date)

603 Starved Naked Cold and Wet30 Mar 202600:23:31

603 Starved Naked Cold and Wet

Free Form Fun

This week: Joe from St. Pete calls in about the Seahawks Super Bowl win (Mike is absolutely not over it), shouts out Clint Gresham, and recaps the Jannus Live show with Goldfinger, Zebrahead, Unwritten Law, and sullvn. Dave from Omaha asks about the new Yellowcard album and Mike gives a real, honest take. A mystery caller accidentally tries to sign up for Naked and Afraid, which sends Mike down a full reality TV rabbit hole: Survivor, Big Brother, The Traitors, and which one he would actually do. And Anderson calls in from the Dallas show at Southside Ballroom. Plus: Zebrahead has a new song out, shoutout to Ben Osmundson, sullvn breakdown, new MxPx album update, and why you should get out to a show this summer.

All About That Bass #59319 Jan 202600:41:19

My first bass was Peavey T-40 and my latest bass guitar is the Orange Creamsicle. The Mike Herrera Artist Series StingRay is instantly recognizable — a bass shaped by decades on the road with MxPx. Mike Herrera brings his signature style to the classic StingRay with passive electronics, simplified controls, a color-matched headstock, and a custom Pokinatcha pickguard. Available now!

Switching from playing with my fingers to a flat pick revealed!

MXPX vs. Tumbledown Album Prep. - A Comparison.

Did we make it? Was there a time where we knew I wouldn't have to work at day job? Never crossed my mind.  I knew I would never have a day job as soon as I started touring.  And it had nothing to do with money.

I never thought about the future other than making and performing music. Is that naïve? Yes. But I think that's what it takes sometimes to just keep going no matter what.
