Émigré (2023), his oratorio for soloists, choir, and orchestra, receives its European premiere from Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in the fall of 2024. This follows the work’s world and U.S. premieres last season from the co-commissioning Shanghai Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic, respectively, with a Chinese and American cast led by conductor Long Yu in a semi-staged production by Mary Birnbaum. Set to a libretto by Mark Campbell, with additional lyrics by Brock Walsh, the 90-minute work tells the story of Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai to escape the Holocaust. THE MIKE GORMLEY SHOW - Featuring Jeff and Steven McDonald | Redd Kross FULL PODCAST INTERVIEW In 1979, two school kids all hopped up on punk rock, started their own group in their hometown of Hawthorne, Los Angeles (birthplace of the Beach Boys), and soon found themselves opening shows for notorious scene pioneers Black Flag. Jeff McDonald was 15, and his brother Steven was only 11. But that didn’t stop their group from becoming one of the most remarkable, enduring, and unique outfits punk-rock ever belched up. 2024, then, marks Redd Kross’s 45th birthday – an important anniversary for any group whose heart pulses at 45RPM – and the brothers are celebrating the event with a veritable multimedia extravaganza. There’s a memoir, Now You’re One Of Us, due in November, with author Dan Epstein telling the group’s story in the McDonald’s unmistakable (and occasionally contrary) voices. A brilliant rockumentary, Born Innocent, directed by Andrew Reich, will premiere later in the year. Gary eventually moved to California after a couple of years and formed his band called The Figures. They landed a deal with Epic and issued their debut album, Gary Myrick & the Figures, in 1980; it produced a minor cult hit in the single "She Talks in Stereo." The follow-up, Living in a Movie, was released in 1981, but after the supporting North American tour, Myrick decided to disband the Figures. Mike Gormley Presents...Doug Legacy! Doug Legacy is a musician and one of the founding members of the Zydeco Party Band. He has puppeteered background characters on Muppets Tonight and his band was featured as the house band for the show (with Legacy playing accordion). Doug is also known for The Bucket List (2007), Gilmore Girls (2000), and Muppets Tonight (1996). Doug wound up in Los Angeles in 1977 where he immediately won the Gong Show playing steel drums. He then went on to play them with Rod Stewart (a significant vocal influence on Doug), where he met Jimmy Z, playing great blues harp and tenor sax on this album. Jimmy Z went on to play with Jeff Beck and the Eurythmics. Doug had the honor to back up Paul McCartney on background vocals and accordion. He also sang for Brian Wilson, Todd Rundgren and Oingo Boingo. Oingo Boingo bassist John Avila plays on the first track of this album. Doug founded the Zydeco Party Band over 20 years ago and has released several albums. King Cake Party (1990) was produced by Jim Keltner and Freebo and had guest artists Ry Cooder and David Lyndley on it. It was released on Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe’s label Demon in Europe and Japan. Doug also made an album with the Oingo Boingo band in 1996 called Doug and the Mystics “New Hat” released in Europe on Colosseum Records. Doug has worked on many projects with Van Dyke Parks as a musician and engineer. Van Dyke introduced Doug to Grant Geissman who plays great guitar on this project. Long-time friend and collaborator Gary Ferguson play solid drums and percussion. Gary has played for artists such as John Hiatt and Eddy Money. Dave Eastly has been the 1st chair bassist for the Zydeco Party Band for the last five years. THE MIKE GORMLEY SHOW Featuring Billy Vera | Grammy Winner, Singer & Songwriter *In the early days of The Jeremiah Show, Mike Gormley would sit in and host the show. This is one of those interviews. It would eventually lead to The Mike Gormley Show as it is known now. This interview with Billy Vera originally aired on radio in 2021. About Billy Vera The first song he ever presented to a publisher, “Mean Old World,” became a chart hit for Ricky Nelson, and, one year later, his “Make Me Belong To You” was a summer hit for Atlantic Records star Barbara Lewis. Dolly Parton cut Billy’s song, “I Really Got The Feeling,” taking it to #1 on the country charts. This propelled Billy to move to Los Angeles, where in 1979, he formed Billy & the Beaters, which soon became the most talked-about band in town. Five years later, a phone call from the producer of the sitcom Family Ties changed everything. They wanted to use “At This Moment” in an episode. The public responded, and the song, now reissued on Rhino, vaulted to #1 nationally. In the interim, Billy had built a side career in acting, appearing in the cult film, “Buckaroo Banzai,” Oliver Stone’s “The Doors,” Blake Edwards’ “Blind Date,” as well as various TV shows like “Alice,” “Wise Guy,” “Baywatch” and a recurring role as Duke on “Beverly Hills, 90210”.  Billy produced the last four albums of his friend, Lou Rawls, taking the great singer back to #1 on the jazz charts and reviving his recording career. In 2008, Michael Buble recorded Billy’s song, “At This Moment,” on his album Crazy Love, which has sold over 8 million copies. In January 2016, Billy’s dream album, BILLY VERA: BIG BAND JAZZ, was released on Varese-Sarabande Records. Jake Gold is one of Canada’s most successful artist managers, and for its 6-season run, a judge on the national television hit Canadian Idol. In 1981, Gold started his artist management company, The Management Trust, through which he is best known for establishing and transforming The Tragically Hip into a national icon. In 2020, Gold reunited with The Tragically Hip to direct its legacy in Canadian music history. He also handles the career of acclaimed pop rock band The Pursuit of Happiness and currently oversees a roster of quickly rising talent with co-manager Ryan Hefford. The Management Trust oversees music producers Moe Berg, Laurence Currie, and Russell Broom. The annual Canadian Music Industry Awards have recognized Gold as Manager of the Year in 1991, 1993, and 1994. In 2009, Gold was elected to the CIMA (CIRPA) board, where he served as Vice‐Chairman. Jake is also a former board member for the MMF (Music Managers Forum) and is the 2013 MMF Honour Roll Award recipient for his lifetime work in Artist Management. In 2024, Gold was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and has overseen multiple Juno award-winning acts. Mike and Jake are old friends. He was an original member of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention from 1967 to 1969 before leaving to form his band, Matthews Southern Comfort, which had a UK number one in 1970 with their cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock". In 1979, his recording of Terence Boylan's "Shake It" reached No. 13 on the US charts. Iain Matthews has been featured on over 100 albums in a career spanning over fifty years.
