#33. Sara Arnell: On Rising Up From Our "Lobster Moments"08 Oct 202100:40:11

Send us a text

I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Sara Arnell, and I'm sure you will as well. Sara offers a look into her personal struggles and how we can all learn from her story. She explains how lobster moments or moments of crisis and triggers can be the turning point for transition, and that we all have the power to "take off our robes, and lose the trappings of what we think defines us"

Sara is a former advertising CEO, author and professor at The New School’s Parsons School of Design. Her thirty-year career in fashion, writing, and advertising broke new ground, winning awards and global recognition for her work and its clients. In her new book, There Will Be Lobster: Memoir of a Midlife Crisis, Sara offers a look into her personal struggles and how it took a rogue lobster,  dying rock star, an eighteen-pound tumor, a meditation guru, a famous medium, and a former monk to put her on the path towards light, hope, and healing. It is Sara's hope that anyone who reads this book is given the hope that they too can rise back up, no matter how far they think they have fallen.

She can be found here:
saraarnell.com

@sara_arnell (IG)
https://www.linkedin.com/in/sara-arnell-5b9093ba/

Here are her key takeaways:

  1. There is no shame in midlife changes just self-empowerment, if you can face it and get the kind of help that you need.
  2. You have to care for yourself as much as you care for everyone around you, and it's not self-indulgent.
  3. The idea of living a life of service either towards your own dreams and goals or towards helping someone else's is how happiness starts to bubble up
  4. Change starts inside with how you look at the outside world and how you see yourself living in that world, not trying to grab things from outside to see if they make you happy. It's the other way around
  5. We all have moments where we are going through life and something just stops us in our tracks and it makes us realize this can't go on anymore- when we realize we need to make a change
  6. We can all start over! Who wrote the rule that says we can't?
  7. Make sure that nobody a

#32. Kavita Ahuja: On Being Vulnerable01 Oct 202100:10:27

Send us a text

Be inspired as Kavita, founder of Power Purpose Play speaks from the heart about her thoughts surrounding vulnerability, and how, as Brene Brown describes,  “Vulnerability is basically uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.”

We all experience some form of vulnerability at different times in our life. The key is to try to detach yourself from the consequence of your actions, don't be so concerned with external validation, and try and let go of that Gremlin that tells you, "I'm not good enough".

There is catabolic energy or a destructive tearing down force, which is often associated with stress. There there is anabolic energy which is a constructive, building up force. With this type of energy, its easier to focus on solutions, tap into creativity and experience a more complete and conscious view of situations.

The less judgement and fear people have about themselves and situations, the more anabolic energy they can access. So when you judge yourself, worry about what other people think, and strive for perfection,  you are operating at catabolic energy levels. Versus when you are free from trying to be perfect, bring out what is inside of you without fear of judgement or without attaching yourself to the outcome of your actions, you operate in an anabolic energy state.

Kavita wants you to access those high anabolic energy states so you can be your most creative, excited, brilliant and beautiful self.

Be vulnerable, take chances, don’t worry so much about how many followers you have, how much you are going to make, what will people think, how you look, how you sound, being perfectly perfect.

Be yourself and figure out what it is you really want in your life moving forward.

If you need help to access your true inner power and purpose moving forward, watch this free mini training with the accompanying workbook, where Kavita goes through Level 1 of the Pyramid of Reinvention: Rediscovering Yourself: https://learn.powerpurposeplay.ca/midlife-rediscovery-mini-training/

#31. Genein Letford: On Intercultural Creativity 25 Sep 202100:51:54

Send us a text

Enjoy this next episode of The Midlife Reinvention Podcast, where we learn from Genein Letford about Intercultural Creativity, among many other important and relevant topics  we can all apply into our lives.
As the 2019 LA Lakers Business Woman and the 2015 CA Charter Teacher of the Year, Genein is a national thought leader and creator of the concept of ‘Intercultural Creativity™’.  She is the Founder and Chief Creative Officer of CAFFE Strategies,  and her 7 Gems of Intercultural Creativity is a leading framework that encourages corporations in their diversity and inclusion development. Genein believes creative thinking thrives best in an inclusive environment and she is often called ‘America’s Creative Coach’ for her work in reigniting intercultural creativity within our workforce.
You can find Genein here:

https://www.facebook.com/GeneinSpeaks/
https://twitter.com/GeneinLetford
www.instagram.com/geneinletford/
www.CAFFEstrategies.com

Here are her key takeaways:

  1. The number one skill needed in the workforce today is creative thinking. People can be creative, but if you're not in an environment which is inclusive, then the creativity skills don't matter because you're not able to really execute.
  2. Cultural competence is your ability to be observant of different cultural situations and you are able to see the complexity within them
  3. The 7 Gems of Intercultural Creativity are 1) A creative growth mindset 2) An open mind and open heart  3) I see you, I see me  4) Curiosity 5) Perspective Shifting  6) Authentic Adaptation 7) Being a Bridge
  4. To get out of a fixed mindset become self aware, and put yourself in experiences where you are not a master. Try something new for the first time.
  5. How to release the limitations we set on ourselves? Be true to yourself. Be conscious if you are over identifying with a particular title or roles. Give yourself grace.

#30. Patti Pokorchak: On Living a Life With No Regrets15 Sep 202100:44:56

Send us a text

Enjoy this  colorful conversation with Patti Pokorchuk. Her positive spirit, no-can-do attitude towards living a life on the edge is both entertaining and inspirational.

Patti  was NOT a born sales professional. She was the shyest female tech pioneer, proving that ANYONE can learn how to sell, AND love it too. Patti now teaches Entrepreneurial Sales at Ryerson University, in Toronto Canada.

A serial entrepreneur since 1992, she helped co-found and run a software business, scaling to multiple 7-figures in sales before opening up her own hobby farm and garden center, despite not knowing anything about farming!

At the age of 25, she decided to start living a life with no regrets, turned her back on a promising career at IBM, and took on a one-way ticket to Europe for a year….. which ended up being 9 years.  Her adventures as a serial entrepreneur and living a life of experiences are in her book The Accidental Farmer.

You can find Patti here:

https://www.facebook.com/pattip1
https://www.instagram.com/pattipoker/
https://www.linkedin.com/in/pattipokorchak/

Here are her key takeaways:

  1. When you fast forward to  90 or 95 and are sitting on your rocking chair - your regrets at that age are your dreams for today, and it doesn't matter what age
  2. If you're not living on the edge a bit, you're not living. If something you do doesn't scare you a bit, then you're not growing
  3. Once you make a huge life decision, the next one is a lot easier.
  4. When your happy outside matches your happy inside that is true happiness
  5. Love yourself first and everything flows. What anyone else thinks of me is none of my business, what I think of myself is the #1
  6. I encourage people who have been through trauma to get professional help. Never give up to get to a place of happiness and peace - that's the mos

#29. Kavita Ahuja: On Realizing Your Dreams10 Sep 202100:08:54

Send us a text

Join Kavita Ahuja, Founder of Power Purpose Play https://powerpurposeplay.ca/ as she muses about the importance of realizing our dreams.  She talks about how dreaming is not just for children, and somehow, as adults we have just stopped doing that.

Her message is to DARE to DREAM, and that despite our perceived insecurities and lack of confidence, if we put our true intentions out into the world,  the realization of our dreams is possible.

Kavita celebrates the launch of our signature course: It's My Time Now: How to Rediscover Yourself in Midlife. It is a step by step guide which she followed, and she is giving you the tools to help you realize your dreams.  But its not just about dreaming. It’s about taking action on an idea, a twinge in your heart, that keeps on getting louder, so much so that you can’t ignore it any longer.

This course is about taking what is inside of you and bringing it out into the world. It could be you are stuck in your career and don’t know what to do next. It could be that your kids are now away and you’re wondering, what’s next? It could be that your relationships no longer are serving you, or that your health or spirituality is not where you want it to be. We explore all of that and help you find your reason for being.

Kavita will walk you through a process she developed called the Pyramid of Reinvention, and there are 6 levels which culminate in a plan of action for you. You can choose between independent learning, where you start and study at your own pace in a completely online program. Or you can choose group learning where she will guide you and a small group of women through the pyramid of reinvention in 8 transformational weeks. Or you can choose private learning where Kavita will personally coach you in 12 personal coaching sessions.

#28. Ashton Applewhite: On Ageism28 Aug 202100:53:37

Send us a text

It was such a pleasure to speak with Ashton Applewhite on this important topic - her passion for leading this emerging movement to raise awareness of Ageism and how to dismantle it is fascinating, and we can all learn from, and participate in spreading this awareness.

Ashton is the author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism,  and  is a leading spokesperson for the emerging movement to raise awareness of ageism and to dismantle it. Ashton has been recognized by the New York Times, the New Yorker, National Public Radio, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism. Key takeaway's:

  1. Ageism is the discrimination and stereotyping on the basis of age. It is a set of ideas and social practices and the notion of making any kind of generalization about a person or a group of people on the basis of how old you think they are.
  2. There are so many surprising facts about ageism, such as that the percentage of America

#27. Kavita Ahuja: On Turning 55!07 Aug 202100:15:04

Send us a text

In this 26th solo episode of The Midlife Reinvention podcast, Kavita Ahuja, founder of Power Purpose Play https://powerpurposeplay.ca/ muses on what it means to her to turn 55 years of age. Society puts so many labels on each of us and how we should behave or what we should be doing at different stages of our lives. Kavita wants to turn those stereotypes on their head and take the word "crisis" out of midlife!

Instead, midlife is a time for renewal and rediscovery, and a time when we should be looking within us for the answers to those big questions, like, who am I, and what do I really want? More importantly, what is stopping me from getting there?

Kavita's life's work is to help women in midlife find the answers to these questions.   At the age of 52, Kavita left an extremely successful corporate pharmaceutical career of almost 25 years, took control of her health, reignited her marriage, and found her next true calling. This is to help women find the Power within them to rediscover their Purpose, and reinvent themselves, regardless of their age or circumstance. She rediscovered herself after the age of 50, and she believes you can too. Her mission is to help you do just that.

"My vision is to give you a glimpse of yourself beyond anything you can imagine. I want you to experience more happiness, more hope for your future, more excitement for your next journey, more confidence in yourself, and a greater understanding of your true purpose and power in this next chapter of your life."

She wants you to realize that It's Your Time Now - to take the time out for yourself and rediscover what has always been inside of you, and to celebrate YOU.  If you are interested in the learning more about our comprehensive course, "It's My Time Now: How to Rediscover Yourself in Midlife" https://learn.powerpurposeplay.ca/  contact her at kavita@powerpurposeplay.ca to be placed on the waiting list. It is an 8 week transformational journey led by Kavita and will be launched in the Fall, and is a culmination of all of Kavita's learnings and based on her own reinvention .  If you are interested in personal one-on-one coaching with Kavita, contact her for a free initial consultation. Dena's passion for life and helping others find their purpose is unique, as are her views on how we are  just getting started in our 50's. I so enjoyed my conversation with Dr. Rupinder Toor. Her passion for the advancement of women's health and the empowerment of women and girls and her work in the field of reproductive healthcare is so impressive and important. We can all learn so much from her, and her mission to champion women's health and culturally appropriate healthcare as well.

Dr. Toor is the Founder & Medical Director of The IUD Women’s Clinic. She has been a pioneer in establishing women’s health as an area of focus within the scope of Family Medicine, and shares her passion for these areas with students, health care professionals and her community.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rH3kKApREk

Here are her main takeaways:

  1. There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come but you just need to be listening for those ideas, because they will come to you in that moment. Don't worry too much about the details. The details will sort themselves out. You just need to be open to listening
  2. We need to reframe how we look at aging and not equate aging with decline - it's not serving us well. We do not become older, we just become more of who we really are.
  3. When something is calling for you - why would you not answer? There is something that's tapping at your door - saying "hey look over here in this direction"
  4. The roles we play - when we get to 50 some of those roles go into auto pilot - we have this window of time now - its like we are recycled teenagers
  5. The first half of your life is all your learnings, your teachings and what your supposed to be doing and as you get older its the process of unlearning and dropping the things that no longer serve you. It's so exhilarating !
  6. I no longer have a bucket list - I have another list - it rhymes with bucket!
  7. Women need to realize the value of the resource of women. Because we are biologically and socially designed to look after everybody - the collection of our wisdom is a huge resource. We need to share our knowledge
  8. You don't have to have had any special life journey - your life journey as

#20. Kavita Ahuja: On Rediscovering Yourself in Midlife18 Jun 202100:12:05

Send us a text

Kavita Ahuja, founder of Power Purpose Play, celebrates the 20th episode of The Midlife Reinvention Podcast! As she contemplates the incredible experience it has been, she stresses the fact that Midlife is NOT a crisis - it is an opportunity for each of us to step into our individual greatness and rediscover who we are and bring that out into the world.

Kavita discusses what she terms, "The Pyramid of Reinvention" which consists of 6 steps: 1) Rediscovering Yourself - your inventory (skills, talents),  your passions, your values, culminating in the discovery of your Reason for Being; 2) Visioning Yourself - your inner mentor, which is you in the future - how do you see her, with deep clarity? 3) Facing Your Obstacles - whether those be outer or inner blocks, we all have them and there are techniques to quieten them in our minds to release positive energy; 4) Building Your Confidence - with the words we say, the thoughts we think, and the actions we take - if you don't have the confidence, it will be difficult to execute on a plan for yourself. 5) Charting a Plan of Action with specific and measurable goals; and finally 6) Monitoring Your Progress - how will you be accountable for your plan?

She wants you to realize that It's Your Time Now - to take the time out for yourself and rediscover what has always been inside of you, and to celebrate YOU.  If you are interested in the Pyramid of Reinvention  and want further information, contact her at kavita@powerpurposeplay.ca - you can sign up for our upcoming  6 week transformational course here: https://learn.powerpurposeplay.ca/  - this will be launched in the Fall, and is a culmination of all of Kavita's learnings and based on her own reinvention .  Join our growing community at https://powerpurposeplay.ca/contact-us/  and our private Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/345142570007158

Dr. Caroline Brookfield is completely lovely,  inspirational as well as entertaining.  Her no-nonsense approach to life, creativity and taking on new challenges is so inspiring.  Caroline believes that if everyone took small, unconventional actions to embrace their inherent creativity, we could change the world. Caroline received honors for her veterinary degree from the Ontario  (Canada) Veterinary College, is a certified level 2 Creative Problem Solving facilitator, and holds a Certificate of Professional Management from the University of Calgary, where she lives. Here are her key takeaways:

  1. Everyone has a different edge they seek. The trick is finding that edge.
  2. There is a comfort zone, a growth zone, and a panic zone. The trick is to find the edge of your comfort zone into your growth zone without going into panic zone.
  3. Challenge yourself through self talk and "objective risk assessment" - or what's the worst that could happen? Or, "screw it, let's just do it"
  4. The fear of regret can fuel your motivation
  5. Anything you do that's creative is uncertain. Creativity is a boot-camp for facing those harder challenges in your life and facing those obstacles.

Her advice on the importance of cultivating long term relationships is so refreshing to understand and implement. A wife of 25 years and a mother of 4, Alexandra believes the key to passion, fulfillment, intimacy and success isn’t compromise--it’s being unwilling to compromise--because when both people feel free to be themselves, and know how to love and be loved for exactly who they are, the relationship is juicy, nourishing, and deeply satisfying.

  1. Be aware of your blocks, unpack them and make a decision - are you willing to let this thing stop you from getting what you want? Everything we want is on the other side of fear.
  2. The heroine's journey is a model for life. Each heroine has to figure out what they need to do to disarm their threshold guardian. You might need to run right at it, you might need to fight it, you might need to befriend it, or understand it

Her generosity and kindness of spirit is so evident, and her reinvention into the "Bag Lady of Bay Street" has inspired and helped so many women in her path. Not to mention her philanthropy efforts, Sandra is a force to be reckoned with, and we can't wait to see what she does in the next decades of her life!

  3. The only thing I know for sure is that until you're ready for change you won't change. We need to accept ourselves with all our imperfections

Send us a text

On this episode of the Midlife Reinvention, Kavita has a far-reaching discussion with Lisa Mattam on topics relevant to many of us as we contemplate our next steps. How can we incorporate our values into our vocation? Lisa is a great example of this.

Here are her Key Takeaway's:

  1. Our pivotal moments can be sudden, or they can build up, to a point when we finally say, "it's time now - for me to move forward". Pay attention to these moments.
  2. To find the courage to go after what you want a) listen to what your gut tells you b) avoid people who discourage your new direction c) build a community of people around you who can support you and with whom you can be honest and transparent with.
  3. For anyone who's thinking of trying something new, it's difficult to do it by yourself.  Find your village, and seek out resources - whether they be books, podcasts, or other resources that will support your growth.
  4. To overcome the feeling that "I'm not enough" - be "Choiceful" - you have the capacity to do it, and it's all within your range. It's not whether you are enough, it's whether it aligns with who you want to be.
  5. There has never been a better time for authenticity and transparency and standing up for your

#8. Linda Rossetti: On Women & Transition02 Apr 202100:49:48

Send us a text

On this episode of The Midlife Reinvention, Kavita Ahuja interviews Linda Rossetti, who shares here wealth of experience and research on the topic of Transition.

Linda is a Harvard MBA and expert on transition and its impact on individuals and organizations. Her expertise is rooted in diverse roles; as CEO of a VC-backed tech company, as a Board member who led negotiations for a $1.5Bn healthcare merger, and as a C Suite executive at Fortune 500 Iron Mountain. Yet, nothing prepared her for her own unexpected transition. Over the past decade, Linda has conducted extensive research on the impact of transition and how to navigate it successfully. She is the author of 5-star rated Amazon Top Seller, Women & Transition. She also hosts the podcast Destination Unknown

You can find Linda here:

Here are her Key Takeaways:

  1. We land at moments of transition when there is a shift in how we've come to think about ourselves. We as a society really misunderstand these moments.
  2. We often stall instead of using these moments of transition as a launching pad for opportunities to access more of who we are and the potential that is resident within us.
  3.  There is a very stark difference between the words change and transition. Changes are very goal oriented. Transitions are when we are stepping into a process that has an unclear outcome.
  4. Transitions include moments when there is a shift in what holds value and meaning to us. They require us to re-examine our assumptions a

Belinda's thoughts are so powerful and relevant, and can be applied both personally, and within our organizations. Her whole life has been about helping other women lead their lives to their full potential.

A self - described Change Maker, Belinda Clemmensen is the founder of the Women's Leadership Intensive, and the proud co-founder of the Leader Coach Intensive, whose mission is to inspire, empower, support, and equip women to lead the change the world needs.   As an ICF-certified coach and award-winning designer and facilitator of leadership development initiatives across North America for over 25 years, Belinda has now turned her focus to helping women lead in whatever domain or industry inspires them.

Here are the key takeaways from this episode:

  1. If we start with a place of values and purpose and we use that as a way to make all the other decisions, then we get to a place where our actions are aligned.
  2. If there is a call inside of us, even a whisper inside of us that says, there's more here for me, that's making a shift over to that place of purpose.
  3. When the darkness shows up be ready for it, and know its not a sign that you should stop and turn back, it's just part of the path.
  4. It's your one life! The thing about midlife is we recognize now that the runway is not infinite; if we're lucky we're halfway there.
  5. Let's not do this alone, because it makes it way harder. Let's creating affinity spaces - a space where we can come together and ask similar questions or wonder about the same callings.
  6.  If not now, then WHEN? And if not you then WHO?
  7.  If we are just on that productivity treadmill and just doing stuff - ticking off our lists…there is no room there for creativity.
  8. Redefine your definition of success - the definition may not have been built for you. Build your own.

3)  Open up your calendar and look at your week and commitments - look at each and feel in your body what your reaction is. It’s a clue to what you love to do.

She has held progressive roles with  retailers including President of the Bombay Furniture Company in Canada , SVP of Sales and Operations with Marks and Spencer’s, VP of Sales and Operations with Holt Renfrew (Hr2), and progressive roles within the Woolworth Organization across North America.

Today, Vicki is the Founder and executive coach at Vicki Bradley and Company https://vickibradleyco.com/, where she works with  businesses to attract, retain and advance women into senior leadership roles. She is also the Founder and CEO of WIL Empowered https://www.wilempowered.com/. As a mentor and coach for top executives she created the WIL Empowered program to provide all the tools and training necessary for women to become effective leaders and accelerate their careers. You can reach out to her directly for her expertise at: vicki@wilempowered.com

Here are the key takeaways from Vicki:

1) Being in alignment is available to all of us once we become conscious of that. Believing in the possibilities is the starting point.

2)  Remember what your gifts are, what are your strengths? When you get up every day what do you get excited about sharing with the world? Ask your friends - what do they see?

 3)  Change is not easy, but hugely gratifying once you make the leap because you're more in alignment with who you are meant to be. "Sometimes staying the same is more painful than the change”

4)  Take that path of your true potentiality which is so critical especially in our world today. It’s so important to recognize what our purpose is, because we are doing a disservice to those around us when we are not reaching our full potential

5)  Don’t compare yourself to others - you don’t know what their life is like. How do you make the most of your life?

6)  How do you want

#2. "Choose to Challenge" - launch episode of The Midlife Reinvention on International Women's Day!05 Mar 202100:08:09

Send us a text

On this first episode of The Midlife Reinvention, your host, Kavita Ahuja, founder of Power Purpose Play https://powerpurposeplay.ca/contact-us/, tells you who she is, why she created this community and podcast, and why you should care!

On this, International Women's Day 2021, the theme is "Choose to Challenge" and Kavita tells you a bit about her background and why she chose to challenge what was traditionally expected of her, and why she created Power Purpose Play https://powerpurposeplay.ca/ This community and this podcast brings women in midlife like you together to challenge yourself to pursue your dreams, regardless of your age or circumstances.

Kavita, a 54 year old South Asian woman, born in Kenya and raised in Canada, followed the traditional path encouraged by many of her generation. This included advanced education, earning 2 degrees - in Biology and an MBA, a stellar award-winning corporate pharmaceutical career, marriage of 26 years, and raising 2 high achieving sons. Yet, at the age of 50, Kavita realized that something was missing; she felt unfulfilled and knew she had more to offer the world. She needed to rediscover her true calling, gifts, and what she was really meant to do  for the rest of her life. She found that so many other women in midlife had these same feelings - of lack of fulfillment, lack of courage, and choosing themselves last. She decided to change that, and Power Purpose Play  https://powerpurposeplay.ca/ was born!

Through telling her own story and interviewing incredible women who have rediscovered themselves and brought their gifts to the world, Kavita hopes to inspire you to take action to do the same. Let's all choose to challenge, and make this next chapter in our lives the best chapter ever!

  2. List 3 specific skills or talents you’ve developed that make you successful at what you do (ie. My mind has a natural ability to process the meaning behind the numbers)
  3.  List the 10 coolest things about you. These can be experiences you’ve had (eg.running a marathon, skydiving), roles you play (eg. parent, sibling, best friend), skills or expertise (eg. speaking French fluently)

Don't rely on just one support in your health system - have various points where you can fall back on
4) Tying to eat healthy is the worst strategy. Make your health goal specific and also let go of the big picture which can scare you. Always focus on w
