Episode #59 - Leaving a Legacy: How Executives & Senior Leaders Can Fix the Leaking Pipeline for The Next Generation of Female Leadership

Not only are there not enough talented, skilled, early-career professional women making it to the next leadership level, but we also saw the most significant drop in the percentage of women going from mid- to senior-level positions than we've seen in years. So when organizations can't even hold on to the female leaders they have, what does that say about the women following behind? And what impact on an organization's bottom lines and competitiveness in the open marketplace? Today on the podcast, I'm sharing highlights from my International Women's Day talk with some female executive leaders, focusing on the key steps leaders must take to create and leave a legacy.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • Why creating a legacy matters.
  • Why it’s a “check engine” light moment for organizations
  • What organizations need to stop doing and why
  • Steps can take to fix the pipeline and create a legacy.
  • How to overcome objections to taking innovative action

You can be a leader in many ways without having a formal leadership title, particularly if you're more concerned about the impact you can make in your organization or the world than your title. • What kind of team or organization do I want to lead? Do I want to lead a small team, a large organization, or something in between?

Fixing the "Broken Rung:" Replacing the Career Ladder with a Career Lattice to Advance Career Mobility - Episode #5609 Mar 202300:17:26

Episode #56 - Fixing the "Broken Rung:" Replacing the Career Ladder with a Career Lattice to Advance Career Mobility

In traditional organizations, career advancement has often followed a linear path that resembles a ladder. It was created out of a need for standardized career paths and structured career development programs. But let's face it, the career ladder has worked better for men than it ever has for women, and since it's clear that for women, there's always been a "broken rung" on that latter, it's time for a new approach…the career lattice. On the podcast today, we'll talk about why the career lattice is the best choice to advance the career mobility of women in the workplace.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • Where the career ladder came from.
  • What's a career lattice, and how does it work.
  • The theoretical origins of the career lattice.
  • The benefits of a career lattice for organizations and women.
  • How to implement a career lattice approach to career mobility.
  • Potential obstacles and strategies to overcome them.
  • The impact of this approach.

Episode #55 - Why Organizations Need to Tap into The Power of Executive Masterminds

I LOVE supporting professional women in midlife, fearlessly navigating or reinventing their careers, and gaining unstoppable confidence in the process. I also love when our company gets the chance to work within organizations committed to creating cultures of trust, safety, and inclusive leadership for their clients and stakeholders and the women and women of color within those organizations because it's at that intersection of authentic trust, sustainable accountability, and inclusive leadership that organizations can unlock innovation and drive creativity that always yields greater productivity and profit. In today's episode, I'm sharing more about our corporate work and why executive masterminds can provide a solution to the current pipeline and talent development challenges organizations face around women and women of color leaders.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • The significant challenges organizations are currently facing around women in the workplace.
  • The "check engine light" warning signs leaders are dealing with right now.
  • The typical solutions organizations are using that need to be fixed.
  • Why organizations can't handle these issues and why using the "big" consulting firms won't really give them the results they seek.
  • What it takes to build a sustainable pipeline: Masterminds.
  • The massive costs of waiting or ignoring the problem.

Is Coaching For You? - Episode #4715 Dec 202200:18:11

Episode #47 - Is Coaching For You?

Coaching has evolved over the years. In the past, hiring a career coach meant that your performance was deficient and needed some improvement, so the focus was all on rehabilitation. Over time, executive coaches became popular as a developmental tool to help high-potential leaders earmarked for promotion fine-tune their skills and position themselves for success. While people still use career coaches to land their next job and update their resumes, today, smart, savvy careerists seek the support of an executive or life coach. Today on the podcast, I'm discussing whether coaching is right for you.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • The evolution of coaching.
  • Ways you can use coaching.
  • What coaching is not.
  • How coaching can enhance your career.
  • What to look for in a coach.
  • The frameworks I use in my coaching practice.

Quiet Quitting, the Great Breakup, and What it Means for Women Leaders - Episode #4424 Nov 202200:21:40

Episode #44 - Quiet Quitting, the Great Breakup, and What it Means for Women Leaders

Quiet quitting is a term that became popular in late summer to describe folks who have decided to do the bare minimum to get by without any extra effort. But what are the causes of quiet quitting? How is it related to the Great Breakup, where women leaders are increasingly leaving their jobs because they're not getting what they need from their employers? Is inclusivity an illusion? There's a call for organizations to not only provide space and opportunity but to create cultures that speak to the values and needs of women in the workplace. Today on the podcast, we're discussing all of these issues and what women leaders can do to position themselves for what they want and/or their organizations to create true and lasting change.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • What quiet quitting is and why it's not really a new phenomenon.
  • What the Great Breakup is all about and its impact on women leaders and organizations.
  • Dealing with the duality of both when they're both at play.
  • Four things women leaders can do if personally dealing with either of these issues.
  • Three new approaches employers can consider to counter the effects of quiet quitting and the Great Breakup.

Client Spotlight: How Dr. Jae Sevelius Went From Stuck & Comfortable to Making an Empowered Career Move - Episode #3822 Sep 202200:41:03

Episode #38 - Client Spotlight: How Dr. Jae Sevelius Went From Stuck & Comfortable to Making an Empowered Career Move

We’ve been raised to follow prescribed ideas of our career paths. Go to a good school, get your degree, get in with a great organization, climb that ladder to its highest heights and then retire. But like so many who follow that path, they often abandon any ideas of doing worth that expands their mind, fuels their passion, positions their authority, aligns with their life and values, and brings genuine fulfillment and happiness. Today on the podcast, my client Dr. Jae Sevelius shares how they took control of their career and made an empowered career move.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • Why trying to find “career distractions” won’t get you career fulfillment.
  • Why repeating your old success formula won’t get you what you want.
  • How the self-discovery process opened Jae up to greater opportunities.
  • How they found an aligned position that valued all they had to offer.
  • How the Career Rebel Academy gave them the tools and courage to say yes when the universe opened doors for them.
  • Why having a coach is so critical to growing and developing in your career.
  • That leveling up requires you to move out of your comfort zone.
  • Advice for those considering the Career Rebel Academy.

Episode #34 - How Vanessa Murphy Went from the Royal Navy to a Multipassionate Coach and Consultant

The more I listen to other people talk about their career paths and journeys to the work they're doing today, the more I see familiar themes integral to success. Dump Your Degree & Get to the Career You Want with Zakiya Akerele - Episode #3211 Aug 202200:31:20

Episode #32 - Dump Your Degree & Transition to the Career You Want with Dr. Zakiya Akerele

I often talk about the "sunk cost fallacy." It's a term from behavioral economics that describes our tendency to follow through on or stick with something that we've already invested a perceived large amount of time, effort, or money into it, whether or not we're still receiving a return on that investment. This stems from a loss aversion or the belief that everything you worked for will be lost. It's the thing that keeps us trapped in careers we no longer love. So, for example, if you've spent years, time, and money getting your law, medical, doctorate, MBA, MPH, or engineering degrees, it becomes very challenging for you to believe or even entertain the idea that you can do something else outside of those degrees. In today's podcast, our guest Dr. Zakyia Akerele shares how you don't have to be held captive by or defined by the degrees you've earned and how you can leverage that education and experience to figure out the right career for you.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • Why a degree won't guarantee you career success, and what can.
  • How experimenting with different jobs can get you clarity on the career you really want.
  • How midlife (mid-career) professionals can repurpose their education.
  • Why "who you know" is as important as "what you know to have career success.
  • Why you need a support system and should not try to do this alone.
  • How to manage fears and doubts when going after the career and life you really want.

How to Open Yourself Up to New & Exciting Career Opportunities with Casey Hasten - Episode #3104 Aug 202200:50:37

Episode #31 - How to Open Yourself Up to New & Exciting Career Options with Guest Casey Hasten

Over the years of my work in this space, I’ve found four levels of careerists: Drifter, Hustler, Established. and Rebel. Unfortunately, many people are caught at the Hustler level (running on autopilot, blindly following a societal career ladder) or Established (working hard to maintain everything achieved after years of hustling). At both of these levels, what keeps women stuck are two things: (1) believing there’s no other path to pursue and (2) “settling for good enough.” In today’s podcast, our guest Casey Hasten shares how she broke out of that Hustler/Established level and opened up a new and exciting world that has allowed her to continue growing and evolving in her career.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  • Casey’s midlife career pivot journey.
  • Why knowing yourself is an essential component of finding career fulfillment.
  • The power of having people to support you and your career decisions.
  • The importance of testing out career options and what it can do for you.
  • How the job search process has changed in the new world of work.
  • The best way to work with recruiters.
  • Why now is a good time for a midlife career change.
  • How to figure out the best career path for you.

Featured On the Show:

Quotables From the Show:

  • “Being ‘at choice’ means being present and in the moment, open to the opportunities that may come your way.”
  • “Say goodbye to times that no longer serve you.”
  • “Enjoy the journey, not just the destination.”
  • “What people think about you is not your business.”

About Our Guest:

Casey Hasten is the Director of Recruiting and Coaching with VIP, Podcast Host of the We Are VIP Podcast and soon-to-be-published author.   After being in the accounting world for over twenty years, she made the leap to recruiting those with similar backgrounds.  It is her goal to help others find their career passion using all the skills and networking outlets she has gathered. Additionally, her mission is to help raise the consciousness of the world by helping those she touches learn to be at choice.  To accomplish this mission, she focuses on the importance of mindset first and foremost and teaches her clients how to live “at choice” and how to co-create their own reality through managing perceptions.  This has led to her most recent passion and project, the Awaken: Your Potential journal. A career pilot allows you to gather data to help you determine if you're on the right track with your career change or reinvention or if you need to chart a new course. In this episode, I'm going to teach you to conduct a career pilot study before jumping into something new. It's another way to regret-proof your career decision.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  •  What’s a career pilot study
  •  Why they’re a great approach to figuring out what you want
  •  The 3-step process to conduct a career pilot study
  •  Why some choose not to do a career pilot study
  •  Where to get support to conduct your own career pilot study

How to Regret-Proof Your Decisions - Episode #2823 Jun 202200:24:57

Episode 27 - How to Regret-Proof Your Decisions

Research has found there are two types of regret: regret for what you didn't do or missed opportunities or experiences and regret for what you did. While, over time, people get over the things they've done, those who regret what they didn't do have a lingering regret because they imagine what they missed as being better than what they have. Letting go of regret is admittedly easier said than done, but living in regret is far worse damaging to your health and your ability to trust yourself. This week on the podcast, I'm talking about the connection between fear, decision-making, and regret and how you can manage it.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  •  What is regret?
  •  The types of regret people struggle with.
  •  What regret does to us and our ability to trust ourselves.
  •  The underlying assumptions of regret.
  •  Why it's important to let go of the binary idea of right or wrong decisions.
  •  How to deal with regret.
  •  Accept that life is 50/50 and redefine failure.

  • The societal and economic context surrounding women and salary negotiations.
  • Why you need to know when you have the most leverage in the job search process.

Believing in What's Possible - Episode #1824 Mar 202200:16:00

Episode 18: Believing in What's Possible

How do you know what's possible for you in your life or career? How do you know it's achievable? I've found that the reason we struggle with believing what's possible is because of fear. More specifically, I think the culprit is that many of us suffer from having a victim mentality. What I mean by that is that we don't want to deal with our feelings of fear, take responsibility for ourselves or the outcome we want in our lives and careers. It's scary because what if it doesn't work? Who will we blame? And if we're to blame, what does that say about who we are and what we can achieve? However, there's a way to overcome victim mentality, to start believing and achieving what's possible, and we're unpacking that today on the podcast.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  •  Why we struggle with victim mentality.
  •  Where victim mentality comes from.
  •  How it keeps us stuck and unable to move forward.
  •  How managing our emotions can help us break through victim mentality.
  •  Why vulnerability and embracing imperfection is key to getting what you want.

Navigating Your Life and Career with Liz Bronson and Kathleen Troyer - Episode #1717 Mar 202200:54:24

Episode 17: Navigating Your Life and Career with Liz Bronson & Kathleen Troyer

By the time you've reached midlife, you've taken a few twists and turns in your life and  career. Too often, we try to bifurcate our lives and jobs as if one has no impact upon  the other, but that's impossible. You can't completely separate the different areas of  your life. They are interconnected. Your job and career affect your personal life, and  the individual decisions you make in life will impact your job and career. Today, our  guests on the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, Liz Bronson and Kathleen Nelson Troyer,  hosts of the Real Job Talk Podcast, share their own life and career journeys and the  wisdom they gleaned along the way.

In this episode of the Midlife Career Rebel Podcast, you'll discover…

  •  Liz and Kathleen's career journeys.
  •  The power of having clarity about what you want to do.
  •  Why learning to say no helps you become clearer about what to say yes to.
  •  How to embrace getting uncomfortable to get to what you want.
  •  Why listening to your own voice is so important.
  •  The magic that comes from women working together in community.
