| Episode 324: Idle Discourse: Craig (Vocals) & Donal (Drums) talk to me about their latest release 'Volume 2' and many more topics in relation to the band. | 19 Dec 2024 | 00:56:39 | |
I was delighted to be joined by Craig (Sea High) Hosey (Vocals) and Donal Bowens (Drums) of Idle Discourse to the podcast. The band are tearing up the Metal rule book by incorporating a huge amount of diverse influences and styles to create their own strange brew to intoxicate the punters. Their videos show a band that are creatively connected with their audience and with the release of their excellent 'Volume 2', I couldn't wait to catch up with Idle Discourse to chat about a huge year stamping their mark on the Irish music scene. Craig and Donal fill me in on the formation of the band, how they approach songwriting and of course we have plenty of banter along the way. Hope you enjoy this last episode of 2024 as much as I did. Idle Discourse play Dublin's, Workmans Club on December 19th to wrap up the year!

Cork-based noise merchants WORN OUT have self released their sophomore EP, LOW to huge critical acclaim on August the 30th. | Episode 225: Slung From A Tree: Aaron (Vox/Guitars) & Eoghan (Bass) discuss their debut LP 'Voyage Into Cosmos' which is out on 20/04/23. | 21 Apr 2023 | 01:05:16
It was a pleasure to welcome back Aaron Loughnane (Vox/Guitars) & Eoghan Galligan (Bass) of sludge/stoner band Slung From A Tree. The four piece which is made up of fellow members; Andrew Hayes (Drums) Steve Loughnane (Guitars) have finally got their debut release out called 'Voyage Into Cosmos' on the Cursed Monk Records label. Trying to capture Slung From A Trees live sound was always going to take time whilst recording and operating on a shoestring budget. Aaron, who produced the entire album has worked a minor miracle with their debut. He has moulded and twisted this slab of molten metal which contains crushing cosmic forces, swirling wormholes and stellar musical abandonment into a seven track LP aptly titled 'Voyage Into Cosmos'. Myself and Howard get walked through the process by the lads and naturally get completely lost but it's a wonderful journey to get to in this particular podcast. Please support Slung From A Tree by heading over to the link below and buying the album, merch etc. If you enjoyed this podcast please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel.
| Episode 224: War Of Attrition: Nathan (Vocals) & Ocean (Guitars) talk about their new ep 'The Social Apocalypse', an impressive 12 months of gigging and working on new material. | 14 Apr 2023 | 00:56:08 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Nathan (Vocals) & Ocean (Guitars) of War Of Attrition to the show. The band play a ferocious mixture of thrash, groove and gritty metal that hits all the sweet spots especially when witnessed live. I caught up with the lads just before they do their debut EP launch of 'The Social Apocalypse' in their favourite city, Limerick. Having blasted their way through a serious amount of gigs during 2022, War Of Attrition are perfectly poised to have another impressive year building on the following they have on these shores and are prepping for an new album further down the line. All of this is covered and many more topics are addressed by Nathan and Ocean on this episode. The four piece from Dundalk which also feature Ger Murphy (Bass) and Shane Martin (Guitars/Synths) have released a blistering follow up to Pyres which came out in 2019. 'Mixed and mastered by Josh Schroeder [Lora Shore, King 810], ‘Cut Throat Culture‘ sees the rising Irish four-piece embrace a variety of styles that range from alternative, to metal-core, and electronic fusion, creating a body of work that, if anything, is totally unique to the bands core sound, as well as being a landmark release for contemporary Irish Metal.' oran@overdrive.ie

Declan Beare (Bass/Vocals/Drone Zone) & Charlie Appleby (Drums/Percussion) of True Home, blend the perfect mixture of psychedelic doom, drone and ambient music to create their own niche in the Irish Metal Scene with plenty of support slots racked up. An invitation to play at next months Siege of Limerick festival and progressing to the next round of Metal 2T Masses certainly has them showing up on a lot more peoples radar. It was a pleasure to welcome Dave Slattery of instrumental Tech Metal band Ropemaker to the show. Dave, a multi-instrumentalist enrolled the talents of former Ilenkus drummer Rory Guyett for an instrumental album that's laden with huge slabs of riffs and unpredictable arrangements. 'Interwoven' is Ropemakers debut LP and certainly caused a stir in the Irish Metal Scene, myself and Danielle have a brilliant chat with Dave & Rory about song composition, life as a solo artist and an in depth look at how Ropemaker came into fruition. Dave is yet another great addition to the incredible solo artists out there in our Irish Metal Scene. Check out his Bandcamp page in the link below and support it if you like what you heard on the show. After some great interviews over the last few weeks and some chart success as well it was nice to kick back and relax with Evan and Joe on The Forums. Unfortunately Danielle had to drop out, due to work commitments but as they say the show must go on! We reviewed four new tracks from Collapser, Ropemaker, Terror Syndrome and Nebularis. The topic of the night was a really interesting chat about the options out there for music education, roles in bands and band management. So hopefully you'll enjoy this topic and if you want us to look at other topics comment below. As always thanks for your support and do hit that 'SUBSCRIBE' button if you haven't already on The Metal Cell YouTube Channel. Thanks Richie.

The Metal Cell Podcast and The Smashing Skull Sessions have come together once again to showcase yet another one of Ireland's metal powerhouses. It was a pleasure to have Conor McGouran (Guitars/Keyboards) & Ronan Burns (Bass/Keyboards) of The Enigma Division on the Podcast. The lads along with Ben Wanders (Drums/Vocals) have unleased one of the best debut albums onto the Irish Metal for many a year! Self released on the 27th January of this year, it's a musical odyssey that defies categorization however their influences range from 80s synth music, film scores, progressive rock to tech metal. All the members of the band have been creating and playing in many bands throughout the years so it was exciting to hear that this project was finally going to get a release date in 2023. Conor & Ronan talk us through each track and we discuss the song writing process, video arrangements and guest performances. The musicianship throughout the entire album is breathtaking with vocal performances that are both powerful and emotional. I was delighted to find out that this album will make it to a stage and with an appearance in Bloodstock UK now confirmed; it's only a matter of time for The Enigma Division to rehearse these songs and nail down some Irish dates. If you enjoyed this episode please 'SUBSCRIBE' to the Metal Cell YouTube channel. Thanks, Richie.

| Episode 215: Cell Games: Max, Tristan, Deb & Tonci of the Nu-Metal/Hard Rock band talk to me about recording new music & future plans for 2023. | 10 Feb 2023 | 01:11:21 | |
Max (Vocals), Tristan (Guitars) and newest members Deb (Bass) & Tonci (Drums) join me as we go over a busy twelve months for Cell Games. Having won their first heat of Metal2TMasses blasting out their mix of Nu-Metal/Hard Rock and releasing their well received new single 'Here's to your Bones' I felt it was the perfect time to catch up with the band to discuss their formation, recording new songs and future gigs that may be on the horizon. Cell Games offer an exciting new mix of Metal to the Irish Metal Scene and it won't surprise me to see them appear on a few festival circuits in 2023/2024. I had a great chat and laugh with the band and don't forget to check out all of Cell Games socials. I hope you enjoyed this episode and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel to see more interviews like this. Thanks for your support, Richie.
| Episode 214: Dusk Amadeus: The Scottish Doomsters are working on their debut release. Ewan (Guitars/Backing Vocals) and Zack (Drums) give us 3 exclusive tracks to listen to and talk future plans for the band. | 03 Feb 2023 | 00:45:05 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Ewan (Guitars/Backing Vocals) and Zack (Drums) of Scottish Doomsters, Dusk Amadeus onto the podcast. The four piece which are completed by Sasha (Vocals/Guitars/Cow Bell) and Morris (Bass) certainly impressed me when I saw them opening 'The Crypt of the Riff' festival in Belfast last December. The band play this sublime blend of Doom, where the influences of Monolord get mixed with Mazzy Star (courtesy of Belfast born Sasha's vocals) and Dusk Amadeus emerges. Ewan fills me in on how the band started, despite a few line up changes, Dusk Amadeus have now settled into a formidable unit with the latest member Zack taking over on drum duties. Hopefully we'll see them on our green shores again in 2023 to promote the launch of their album, tentatively penciled in for April/May. We get an exclusive taste of this album with the three tracks Dusk Amadeus gave me on the night. Be sure to show them some love, follow them on their socials and Spotify. | Episode 213: The Metal Cell Forums: Join myself, Danielle and Joe as we talk about topics related to our favorite music...METAL! | 27 Jan 2023 | 01:03:08
It was great to be back doing the first Forums of the year with Danielle and Joe. Unfortunately Evan had to drop out, literally at the last minute, due to tech problems but as they say the show must go on! We reviewed three new tracks from Cell Games, Machina Kore and Raum Kingdom. The topic of the night was a really interesting chat about the formation of Bandcamp, the advantages and disadvantages compared to other music platforms, the influence it has on both bands and the people that use it. We also look at the Bandcamp interface for listening and purchasing both music and merchandise. So hopefully you'll enjoy this topic and if you want us to look at other music platforms comment below. As always thanks for your support and do hit that 'SUBSCRIBE' button if you haven't already on The Metal Cell YouTube Channel. Thanks Richie.
| Episode 212: Unmaker. Aaron (Vocals/Guitars), Sean (Guitars) & Jake (Drums) give us an exclusive insight into their soon to be released brutally heavy album 'Limb from Limb'. | 20 Jan 2023 | 00:57:28 | |
I was delighted to welcome Aaron (Vocals/Guitars), Sean (Guitars) & Jake (Drums) of thrash/groove metal band Unmaker to the show. The three piece have had an incredible year with plenty of gigs under their belts. An impressive debut on the main stage opening up The Siege of Limerick, releasing three singles, completing an album and being awarded 'Best New Metal Act' from us here at The Metal Cell are a few examples of a busy 2022 for the band.
| Episode 211: Nomadus: I welcome Fredy (L.Guitars/Vox), Neil (R.Guitars), Carl (Bass) & Brett (Drums) to talk about their blistering thrash infused debut 'Axis Primordial' Irish Metal Album of the Year. | 13 Jan 2023 | 01:26:53 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Fredy (L.Guitars/Vocals), Neil (R.Guitars), Carl (Bass) & Brett (Drums) of Nomadus on to the Podcast. When Nomadus unleashed their crushing thrash infused debut album 'Axis Primordial' on November 25, 2022, it was the album I always hoped they would make! With stellar performances from all the band members it quickly jumped up to number one on my album of the year playlist. But things were a lot different when I first met Fredy and Neil many moons ago on their first appearance at The Siege of Limerick. They seemed to have never ending problems with trying to get a settled line-up, until the addition of Carl on bass and later Brett on drums. All the pieces of the Nomadus puzzle finally fitted together with Josh over seeing the recording, mixing and mastering; 'Axis Primordial' is a nine-track pilgrimage through blistering riffs and ferocious vocals.
| Episode 210: Jim Hodge (Vocalist) of sludge, grind and hardcore band Mastiff. | 06 Jan 2023 | 01:09:23 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Jim Hodge (Vocalist) of sludge, grind and hardcore band Mastiff. I witnessed Jim and his band Mastiff put on a face melting performance at Damnation Festival in 2022. Mastiff have had the music press across the UK bestowing praise on them for the 2021 release, 'Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth'. It's a crushing mixture of raging doom/hardcore/sludge that builds upon all their previous releases since they formed in 2013. I happened to met Jim after the gig and ended up having a great chat with him. When he said he had visited Cork before, the invitation was immediately handed out to come on the show to talk about his band, his life and that infamous visit to Cork. Hope you enjoy the episode and hit 'SUBSCRIBE' to the Metal Cell YouTube channel, if you haven't already!
| Episode 209: The Metal Cell Forums End of Year Awards 2022. | 30 Dec 2022 | 01:49:50 | |
The best of Irish Metal in 2022! This episode was pre-recorded on the 12.12.22. Join myself, Danielle, Joe & Howard as we try to figure out who impressed us the most in the various categories listed below, throughout the year and what an incredible year it was! There was absolutely loads of releases, gigs and activity in our scene in 2022 compared to the previous problems through Covid related issues in 2021 so it really was something to celebrate as we got down to the difficult choices we faced in trying to pick out winners in the following categories:
| Episode 208: Molarbear. Adi (Drums), Andy (Riffs), Dave (Bass) & Rowan (Vox/Riffs) have released one of my favorite albums of the year 'You will need Gods'. | 23 Dec 2022 | 01:35:00 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome back Molarbear on the podcast. Adi (Drums), Andy (Riffs), Dave (Bass) & Rowan (Vox/Riffs) have released one of my favorite albums of the year 'You will need Gods'. The five piece completed by Darragh (also Riffs) smashed 'The Crypt of the Riff' festival in Belfast with huge slabs of riffs, infectious grooves, a rhythm section like a Panzer tank division and vocals that whipped and sliced through the baying crowd. It was an incredible night to witness Molarbear at the top of their game and with a new album to promote through 'Cursed Monk Records' the lads were in top form as we did a track by track run through for the Podcast. No stone was left unturned as the lads crumbled under my intense questions. It was the equivalent of opening a portal into the dark, mysterious yet wonderful soul of Molarbear, one which many more Metalheads will be converted to around Ireland in 2023 I bet. If you like this show please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube page and buy Molarbears album on the below links:
| Episode 207: Sonus Mortis. I talk to Kevin Byrne whose epic solo Death Metal album 'Collapse The Mountain' is out now. | 16 Dec 2022 | 01:15:14 | |
Kevin Byrne it's fair to say is a veteran of the Irish Metal Scene stretching back to the formation of Valediction in 2005. Myself and Kevin cover those years leading up to the release of their acclaimed debut album 'The Primitive Architecture' recorded in 2010/20011, by a relatively young Mick Richards at Track Mix Studios. In fact that bond with Mick was to prove fruitful when Valediction went their separate ways, with Kevin approaching Mick with plans for his solo project 'Sonus Mortis'. Six albums in nine years is an incredible outlay for an solo artist and there is plenty to cover in relation to how Kevin approaches song structures, lyrical themes and the build up to his current brilliant release 'Collapse The Mountain'. I hope you enjoy the episode and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to the channel if you haven't already. Thanks Richie.
| Episode 206: Hellripper. 'Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags' is the next new Hellripper album, James gives us the exclusive insight on it before it's release in early 2023. | 09 Dec 2022 | 01:18:09 | |
James McBain of Hellripper makes a welcome return to The Metal Cell Podcast. Myself and Joe have a great chat with James about the latest Hellripper tour, which included seventeen dates across Europe and of course the tour Hellripper did around the UK supporting Joes band, Gama Bomb. It's been an incredible 2022 for Hellripper with the band getting some incredible write ups and shirt sales in the Metal Scene. I was delighted to get an exclusive low-down with James about the new album that has been completed for early 2023. We get to hear the album opening track 'The Nuckelavee' and it's a great example of what to expect off the album as myself & Joe talk through the influences and inspirations behind 'Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags'. Fans of the band will be delighted to hear that it's an absolute face ripping ride of frenzied riffing and solo's with the trademark Hellripper sound stomped all over it. It will certainly be at the top of the best Metal releases in next years polls and we here at The Metal Cell Podcast wish James continued success with Hellripper! All hail the Goat!

| Episode 205: Keith (Drums) & Luke (Riffs) of Dog Tired talk about their upcoming dates in Ireland & completing work on a new album. | 01 Dec 2022 | 00:56:15 | |
The first part of two episodes with bands from Scotland that have formed strong bonds with Irish Metal bands. This episode myself and Evan catch up with Keith and Luke of Dog Tired. The band have announced two dates in Ireland with local supports from Nomadus, Gravity Well & Lock Horns (The Deers Head, Belfast), Slung from a Tree & TOOMS (Dolans, Limerick). They have also been busy completing an album, so we get some updates on that and I surprise them with a quiz to test their knowledge on Ireland.....some craic with that! If you haven't got tickets for these shows you are seriously missing out on face melting riffs and a heaviness that is both brutal and unrelenting. Hit 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel if you haven't done already and thanks for the support Richie.
| Episode 204: Jack Penders of Rotlaust talks about his new release 'The Dirge'. All hail epic Irish Death Metal! | 25 Nov 2022 | 01:24:03 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome back Jack Penders of Rotlaust to the podcast. Jack's an incredible musician and we talk about his new release 'The Dirge' which will be up there competing for the Irish Metal album of the year for me. A lesson in sheer brutal Death Metal and a sharp contrast to his last compelling release 'Covenant' which dwelled a lot in the post rock genre. I talk to Jack about this change in style, we talk about the guest musicians on 'Dirge' and Jack shares his insights into each song on the album. Special mention to the video of the first single 'Nascent' which is simply one of the best Irish Metal videos out there. Check it out if you haven't already. Hope you enjoy the episode and hit up Rotlaust at the link provided. As always thanks for your support and hit 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel. Richie.
| Episode 203: Join myself, Danielle, Evan and Joe as we talk about topics related to our favorite music....METAL! | 18 Nov 2022 | 01:30:24 | |
The Metal Cell Forums. Join myself, Danielle, Evan and Joe as we talk about the Metal Scene and discuss topics related to our favorite music....METAL! In this episode we have a look back at The Siege that myself & Danielle attended and Evan played in. Having returned from Damnation Festival in Manchester, I give my thoughts on both nights. The main topic of the night was cash vs cashless for punters/bands in relation to gigs and festivals. We reviewed five quality releases from Apogean Tide, Elder Witch, Enoshie, Fierce Shook and The Blessing Way. Hope you enjoy the show, as always thanks for your support and be sure to 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel in case you haven't already. Richie.
| Episode 202: Sam Ellis (ex-Ilenkus) talks about crafting material for his new solo project Apogean Tide. | 11 Nov 2022 | 00:59:48 | |
Myself and Howard talk to Sam Ellis the guitarist/vocals of Ilenkus about his new project 'Apogean Tide'. Sam did everything himself - writing, recording, mixing, mastering and brought in Rory of Ilenkus to help with the drums/programing. We cover a lot of subjects in this chat, his time touring with Ilenkus, how he approaches his new solo work, what's it like to work on his own away from the dynamics of a band and what forms his ideas for lyrics. He readily admits that this is a learning experience with the end goal of him becoming a better producer. He is currently in the process of releasing a single every couple of months. Hope you enjoy the episode, if so hit 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel. Thanks Richie.
| Episode 201: Yurt: Boz, Bushey & Steve of sonic elders Yurt talk about the release of the upcoming brilliant fifth album 'Upgrade to Obsolete'. | 04 Nov 2022 | 01:52:19 | |
Myself and Howard welcomed the three sonic elders of Yurt to the show: Boz (Bass/vocals), Bushey (Drums) and Steve (Guitars/backing vocals). The lads are veterans of the Dublin underground punk/metal scene, having played in so many different bands and having being able to go to gigs since their early teens. It was almost inevitable that their paths would cross through their love of music. From creating fanzines and incredible art, Boz gives us an insight into his creative side along with his unique writing style. Steve gives us a run down on his rig and guitars that he used on the upcoming album 'Upgrade to Obsolete'. Bushey talks about some of his heroes on drums and we investigate the jazz elements that may influence his playing. Yurt defy categorisation despite myself and Howards best attempts, instead just sit back and relax as we do a track by track preview of the album with the lads as we build up to their album launch on the 12/11/22 in the Bello Bar, Dublin. If you enjoyed this episode and want to hear/see more like it please 'SUBSCRIBE' to the show on The Metal Cell YouTube channel.
| Episode 200: The Siege of Limerick Special - Samhain MMXXII with John of Bad Reputation & Steve of Grey Stag. | 28 Oct 2022 | 00:57:25 | |
Two hundred podcasts on Irish Metal are now officially done and we are joined by one half of The Siege of Limerick team, Mr.John Real. It's always a pleasure to have John on the show and his immense contributions to the Limerick scene and beyond always makes for a interesting episode. Steve Walsh of Grey Stag is another friend of the show so it was brilliant to catch up with the Riff Lord as they prepare for a main stage slot in the Siege. I run through my picks of the day and there's plenty of great contributions from the guests and co-hosts. Hope you enjoyed the episode and I think it's rather fitting that the 200th one falls on the weekend of The Siege of Limerick. Remember to 'SUBSCRIBE' to the show and thanks for your support! Richie.
| Episode 199: Godless Suns: Peter Humphries (Guitarist) of the stoner/sludge/doom band talks about the bands inception & upcoming self titled debut album. | 21 Oct 2022 | 00:58:57 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Peter Humphries of stoner/sludge/doom band Godless Suns to the show. The three piece from England, completed by Sarah on Bass/Vocals and Dan on Drums/mixing/mastering are putting the finishing touches to what promises to be a massive riff laden self titled debut album. The band are well respected veterans of the Greater London scene having played in bands like Zolcalo and Season of the Witch. They have a few appearance racked up in Bloodstock and both Pete and Sarah are also judges on Metal2TheMasses so we get a good insight from Pete about what it takes to catch the judges eye. We discuss plenty of interesting subjects from theology, religion and their upcoming debut appearance in Galway, Ireland. Myself and Danielle really enjoyed Pete's company and it's fair to say his knowledge and passion for Metal knows no boundaries. The album 'Godless Suns' will be released on 25/11/22. Hope you enjoyed the interview and hit that 'SUBSCRIBE' button on the YouTube channel to catch more interviews like this.

It was a pleasure to welcome Torsten Kinsella (Guitars/Pianos/Synths) of God is an Astronaut to the show. The Irish instrumental/post-rock behemoths have been around for over two decades, and for this special podcast we get to discuss and celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album 'The End Of The Beginning'. In this episode we are joined by one half of the organisers of Damnation Festival, Gavin McInally. The festival was originally held at Jilly's Rockworld in Manchester in 2005 and this November, it is moving back to the BEC Arena Manchester, which can hold over 4,500 people. We talk to Gavin about this years line-up, the ups and downs of organising such an impressive festival over the years and we get an insight into how bands make the line-up of Damnation.
| Episode 196: Eternal Helcaraxe: Praetorian(Guitars/Vox) & Tyrith(Drums) of Black Metal band Eternal Helcaraxe talk about their immense new album 'Drowned in Ash'. | 30 Sep 2022 | 01:03:39 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Eternal Helcaraxes, Praetorian (Guitars/Vox) & Tyrith (Drums) to the Podcast. The Black Metal three piece along Oceans on bass, have released one of the best albums of 2022 in my opinion, with 'Drowned in Ash'. To quote Pat O' of The Smashing Skull Sessions: 'Eternal Helcaraxe have mastered and tailored the black metal genre by crossing imaginary boundaries of blackgaze, post-metal and even classical music to bring us an album that doesn't follow the pack, but leads by example.' The lads give us a track by track preview of all the songs on the new album, along with a brief history of the band and what to expect from them in the next few months. Eternal Helcaraxe take their name from a Tolken book, which means 'grinding ice' and it's very fitting for this new release, so enjoy the interview with Praetorian & Tyrith, check out their link below and buy 'Drowned in Ash', you won't regret it! Please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel for more video interviews. Many thanks Richie.
| Episode 312: Broken Habit: John O'Reilly & John Foley of the Dublin based Nu-Metal act talk to me about their terrific new ep S.E.D.A.T.E. | 13 Sep 2024 | 00:46:08 | |
It was a pleasure to have John O'Reilly (Vocals) & John Foley (Guitars) of Dublin Nu-Metal band Broken Habit on the show for the first time. The five piece with Rob (Guitars), Conor (Bass) and Andrew (Drums) started off life as a Linkin Park tribute band called Breaking the Habit in 2019. A name change, writing their own material and self producing saw them release their debut ep S.E.D.A.T.E. in August 17, 2024. We chat about the development of the band up to the release of S.E.D.A.T.E. and it wouldn't surprise me if Broken Habit shed more of their skin to encompass a far more welcoming heavier sound with their next release which they're currently working on. The band are keen to play plenty of gigs so hopefully we'll see them hit a few counties outside of Dublin in the next few months.
| Episode 195: Fornoth: Daire (Vox/Bass) Charlie & John (Guitars) and Lachlan (Drums) discuss riffs, gigs & 'Bog' metal. | 23 Sep 2022 | 01:09:37 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Daire (Vox/Bass) Charlie & John (Guitars) and new drummer Lachlan of Fornoth to the show. Fornoth have been building up a large following of fans over the past year with an well received appearance in Bloodstock coming off the back of with two terrific releases in April: 'From Across the Moors' e.p and 'Whispers Among the Trees' acoustic e.p. They lay claim to the term 'Bog Metal' but their sound is far more expansive than that as you can imagine; with influences ranging from Agalloch, Mastodon and Horselips thrown in for good measure. We cover a lot of subjects, including a conversation about their new release 'The Ferryman & The Lock Keeper' along with another track 'Stranger to the Sea'. Exciting things are on the horizon for fans of this brilliant Irish Metal band and I hope you take the time to check out their releases on the Bandcamp link I've posted below. | Episode 194: HAINT. Ian (guitars/vocals) & Steve (Drums) join me to talk about upcoming singles, gigs and songwriting. | 16 Sep 2022 | 00:46:10
HAINT. It was a pleasure to welcome Ian Booth (guitars/vocals) & Steve Hobson (Drums) of the immense Haint. The trio including Darren Lavery (Bass/Vocals) are steadily crafting songs in the background for the last three years and it's only now we are able to hear the fruits of their intense labour. I talk to Ian & Steve about the reasons why it's taken so long to get these tracks out, a well received debut appearance on Bloodstock and some insights into how they go about writing songs. Haint are almost impossible to pin down in relation to their sound but certainly if you are a fan of Mastodon riffs along with Neurosis/Tool you should find comfort within the Haint vortex. Fans of the Northern Ireland based band will be delighted to know that a new single is coming out called 'Hal' along with some exciting gigs on the horizon, so if you enjoyed the interview please 'SUBSCRIBE' to the show! Thanks Richie.
| Episode 193: The Sluagh: Avi, Sean (guitars) & Killian (backing vocals/guitars) of Tech Death and Prog Metal band, The Sluagh. | 09 Sep 2022 | 01:03:39 | |
Myself and Danielle had a brilliant chat with Avi, Killian & Sean guitarists of The Sluagh! The mystique of the band considering they all wear masks along with the ferocity of the music had us intrigued. The Sluagh or Sluagh na marbh ('host of the dead'), were the hosts of the unforgiven dead in Irish and Scottish folklore. The Sluagh have released two studio albums as part of one album cycle, titled ‘Enivid Creatures’. The second album ‘Enivid Creatures 2’ is entirely instrumental and the lads explain their reasons for that and working with Micheal Richards of Trackmix Studios along with Michael La Viola at MLV studios. There was significant experimentation at the onset of writing both albums, drawing inspiration from both classical composers, while also strongly influenced by technical and progressive metal bands. It's an exciting time to chat with The Sluagh considering what they have planned for the next few months so I hope you enjoy the episode and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell Youtube channel. Thanks Richie.
| Episode 192: Skypilot: Dave Hall (Guitar/Vocals) & Gareth Ruddock (Bass) of three piece band Skypilot discuss their new album 'Simple Beasts'. | 02 Sep 2022 | 01:15:45 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome back Dave Hall (Guitar/Vocals) & Gareth Ruddock (Bass) of Skypilot to the show. We get an exclusive track by track overview of their critically acclaimed new album 'Simple Beasts'. The Northern Irish three piece with Garry McConnell (Drums) completing the line-up have worked hard to get this riff laden eight track album over the line. Recorded at Start Together Studios in late 2021, under the stewardship of renowned engineer and producer Rock O’Reilly, ‘Simple Beasts’ highlights the band’s darker hue, and is their most dramatic work to date. The album was released worldwide via The Distortion Project and Code 7 Distribution on a limited edition digipack CD and all digital formats on Friday 19th August 2022. If you liked this episode please leave a rating on which ever platform you use or simply subscribe to the channel. Thanks Richie.
| Episode 191: Drakonis: Madre Tortura (Lead Vocals) & Saul McMichael (Guitars/Backing Vocals) update us on the band, new material and future plans. | 26 Aug 2022 | 00:31:14 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Saul McMichael & new singer Madre Tortura to the Metal Cell Podcast. Drakonis released an incredible debut album 'Blessed by Embers' in 2020 but the campaign trail for the album got swallowed up by the pandemic. Though their soul is steeped in Black Metal, Drakonis play a fluid version of it, embracing both melody, distorted guitars, blast beats and some tranquil sections which add to the theatre & storytelling aspect of the band. Saul talks about the impact that made on Drakonis and losing two members of the band. However in the murky waters of uncertainty, they found the jewel that is Madre Tortura, who added a new dynamic to the band along with new bassist Chris King. Drakonis have a busy few months ahead of them and the first big date is playing a 12th century church in Cork on 27th of August through Relapse Promotions. It will be the perfect setting to see the band in all it's glory. Hope you enjoy the episode and hit 'SUBSCRIBE' on The Metal Cell YouTube channel for more content like this. Thanks Richie.

| Episode 188: Organ Blender: Padraig (vocals/guitars) & Cole (bass) discuss their new album 'Teemu Khan' and fill us in on what plans they have made for the following few months. | 12 Aug 2022 | 00:38:45 | |
It was a please to welcome Padraig McKeown(vocals/guitars) & Cole Kiernan (bass) of extreme/industrial metal band Organ Blender. 'The Galway trio have created a post-apocalyptic world where the soundtrack to life reeks of industrial and death metal but has somehow been injected with a new-wave, avant-garde antidote that has given it a life of its own. And it’s that cocktail of sorts that makes Organ Blender a hugely compelling and highly absorbing proposition.' Pat O' (The Metal Cell reviews.) It's great to listen to Padraig and Cole talk about their band so passionately, they certainly came across as two accomplished musicians looking to push aside any boundaries that Metal fans are used to and hit them with something different and unique.
| Episode 187: Words That Burn. Roni (Vocals) & Jason (Drums) share some exciting news on upcoming gigs & where they are progress-wise in relation to their third highly anticipated album. | 05 Aug 2022 | 00:52:40 | |
It was a pleasure to welcome Jason again and Roni for the first time onto the show. Words That Burn are definitely one of the most exciting Metal bands in Ireland at the moment; blistering shows, a string of fantastic singles and all the time building up to the release of their yet-to-be-titled THIRD new album! Jason & Roni did let one or two exclusives out of the bag due to my intense interrogation skills so if you're a fan of the band you'll enjoy it or alternatively you'll definitely be charmed by the determination of the lads to get the best out of each skill set they have, which is what makes Words That Burn such a compelling band on the Irish Metal Scene. Hope you enjoy the show and hit that 'SUBSCRIBE' button on YouTube. Thanks. Richie.

The rest of the band comprises of Jimmy Kiernan (Guitars), Dermod Smyth (Synth) & Anto Walsh (Drums). | Episode 311: Martina and the Moons. Letty caught up with the Dublin all-female band before they played a sold out Workmans venue. | 10 Sep 2024 | 00:21:40
Martina and the Moons is an all-female four-piece band based in Dublin. They were one of the 32 acts selected by Ex Oh Promotions to play Mainroom at “The Next Big Thing” in Workman’s last January. They have recently supported the band ‘Thumper’ in a sold out Workmans mainroom, and they will take part in the female-fronted festival ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’, in Whelans. | Episode 185: Strangers With Guns: Jeff (Guitars/Vox) & Rennick (Drums) talk about their new brilliant release 'All Pleasure Is Just Relief'. | 22 Jul 2022 | 01:02:39
It was a pleasure to welcome back Jeff (Guitars/Vox) & Rennick (Drums) to talk about their brilliant newly released album 'All Pleasure Is Just Relief'. Danielle and me get a run through the whole album with the lads along with the usual crazy stories that seem to follow the band. It's certainly Strangers With Guns heaviest release yet; it's another step up in both song writing and musicianship, showing you how diverse and imaginative Stranger With Guns have become. Jeff and Rennick recorded the album as a two piece with the legendary Mick Richards at TrackMix Studios in Dublin and the benefits of working with Mick are evident right through the whole album. Despite losing the much loved Ricky Wright on bass, SWGS's welcomed the excellent 'Watchy' to the band, bringing a whole new dynamic to their live shows. Catch Strangers With Guns playing Indie Festival Cork on July 31st. Hope you enjoy the episode and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube Channel to see more of this content.
