| Ep 150: “The Odd Rule — Why Uneven Planting Looks So Darn Good” | 08 Nov 2025 | 00:19:06 | |
Ever notice how some gardens just feel right? In this short and sunny episode, Esther unpacks one of gardening’s simplest design secrets — the rule of odd numbers. Discover why planting in threes, fives, or sevens creates flow and balance, how our brains naturally prefer a little imperfection, and when it actually pays to break the rule entirely. From hydrangeas to veggie beds, Esther shares real examples from her own garden that prove small tweaks can make a big difference. You’ll walk away knowing how to group your plants for a more natural look — plus a quick “third-plant test” to try at home this week. Because in nature (and in gardening), perfect is overrated — and sometimes the odd ones really are the most beautiful. 🌿 ✨ Don’t forget — you’ll find my free gardening guides linked below in the show notes. 🎧 Press play, grab your notebook, and get ready to uncover the riches hiding in your garden! And if you have a gardening question or topic you’d love me to cover, send me a message — I’d love to hear from you. 🌻 Until next time: remember that gardening can happen in any space, any place, and on any budget. | Ep 140: The Doomsday Garden Kit – Listener Q&A Special (Part 3) | 30 Aug 2025 | 00:24:37
Hello and welcome back to another episode of The Messed-Up Gardener! I’m Esther Williams, your host, and as always — I’m absolutely buzzed to be here with you today. Over the past two episodes, we’ve been digging deep into the Doomsday Garden Kit: what you’d pack if you had to grow food from scratch in a survival situation. And wow… the response has been incredible. You sent me so many questions that I had to dedicate this final part of the series to answering them directly. But first, a little side story. My best friend turned 60 this week, and we celebrated in a way that’s definitely not my usual style — at a nail salon. Yep, me, the chainsaw-and-chipper-loving gardener, getting pampered. It was an experience, to say the least! What struck me wasn’t just the polish (that apparently I now have to pay to get removed?!) but the conveyor-belt business model. And it got me thinking… what if gardening worked like that? Systems that keep producing value over and over again — whether in business, or in the garden. Now, back to the good stuff. In this Q&A episode we’re tackling: This one wraps up the series, and it’s been one of my favourites to record. So grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s dive into your doomsday garden questions together. 👉 If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend or leave a review — it helps more people discover The Messed Up Gardener. And if you’re keen on one-on-one mentoring to grow your garden confidence (or even explore a garden-based business idea), I’ve still got a few spots open — so get in touch. Until next time, remember: gardening can happen in any space, in any place, and on any budget. Have an abundant week — and as always… I’ll buzz you later! 🐝 🐝 Listen now and get your garden prepped for anything! Hi and Welcome to another episode of The Messed Up Gardener. This year it has been one disappointing thing after another in my garden and the increase in insect activity is absolutely doing my head in. In this case I'm referring to slugs and snails chewing through my garden as if it is their own personal buffet. In this episode I go through and give some practical tips on how to deal with some of the biggest pests in your garden. No not all of my practises have been organic but I do try to at least keep it simple and effective without having to have a lot of specialised equipment such as flame throwers 😊 to roast the snails into the afterlife instead this episode has a focus on using materials that can be found in your kitchen to combat the unwanted crawlies in your garden and ways that are less stressful on your budget. | Ep 24 – The Garden of Lies: Uncovering the Truth behind Organic Gardening Myths | 15 Apr 2023 | 00:30:51
Hi and Welcome to another episode of The Messed Up Gardener. In today’s episode I work through debunking 11 organic gardening myths, I had so much fun researching this topic which stemmed from a conversation I had with a friend regarding gardening styles and a comment she made as to how she can’t do organic gardening because it was just too expensive, and she didn’t have the space to grow organically and still get a sustainable crop out of it. I know from experience that it is untrue, so I set out to debunk her statements and the reasons why they were untrue. Let me know if there are any other Organic growing myths I haven’t covered in this episode I would love to try and debunk them. Don’t forget to grab one of my gardening freebees.
