202: How to Perform Under Pressure13 Aug 202400:24:53

On this episode we’re going to be talking about pressure, stress, our brain's role in helping us survive threatening situations, how to close out a good round, and some real practical mental strategies for being present and free while you play.

You're going to learn how to face your struggles, rather than hiding from them.

We’re going to use this concept to help you on a bigger picture of dealing with obstacles and setbacks in your own golf pursuit, but this will also apply to helping you deal with pressure during a round.

201: Paul Salter - Is Hypnotherapy Useful for Golf?25 Jul 202401:03:09

In this episode of The Mental Golf Show, we have Paul Salter, a mindset coach and hypnotherapist for golfers. We discuss how hypnotherapy has a misconstrued reputation, why Paul believes it can speed up the mental improvement and performance of golfers.

We also discuss the amateur golfer’s common diet mistakes, how to get premium fuel for your body, how ‘scarcity mentality’ applies to golf and can affect your game, how long golf improvement should take, how nonjudgmental curiosity can help us change the internal rules we’ve created, what’s at the heart of fear of failure, how fear of getting kicked out of the group can fuel playing scared, and the power of clear visualization, and specifically clear visualization of mistakes.

101: How a Mental Coach Thinks Before, During, and After a Tournament24 May 202100:50:44

I played a golf tournament and documented my thoughts as I went through the week. 100: How to Deal with 1st Tee Nerves | Golf Thoughts Ep 317 May 202100:11:59

This is mostly just a guess, but I'm willing to bet that 95% of golfers are nervous on their first tee shot. What could go wrong, how is today going to go, am I going to get off to a good start, will today be my best round or my worst round, I've gotta show my playing partners I'm not terrible.

All of these thoughts will lead to nervousness on the first tee. So... what should we think instead?

The 5 Steps of a Swing Change w/ Jayson Nickol (Part 2)21 Nov 202300:39:26

On this episode we’ve got Part 2 of my conversation with Jayson Nickol.

We’re going to be talking about:

  • the improvement curve
  • shifting your skill bell curve to be better
  • why do we swing worse when there’s a golf ball there?
  • the difficulty of making swing changes
  • the value of slow motion swings
  • Jayson’s mental game and his own swing changes
  • And wait til the end… we get into one of the most important questions that can be asked.

Jayson is a golf coach who works with players on Skillest, but that just scratches the surface on Jayson. If you want to know more about Jayson you should listen to part 1.

81: Control11 Dec 202000:14:22

How many of us try to control things we cannot control? Things that are not truly our responsibility? The more I talk about and discuss with players about the mental game, this is becoming one of the most important mental game topics that makes the most difference for the most people.

80: The Temptation to Tamper with Technique09 Dec 202000:15:33

How many of us spend our playing time trying to swing a certain way? Trying to perform that perfect motion. Only to get to a frustrated point and give up trying to be perfect and finally just play, and actually start playing the way we wanted to all along?

No? Just me? Suuuurrrrreeeee.

76: One Good Way to Accept Bad Shots02 Dec 202000:11:10

Hey everybody! Josh here! Ever struggle moving on from bad shots and putts? I have a pretty strong hunch your answer is yes.

Tried ways to talk yourself into moving on and forgetting about that bad shot but it didn't work? Pretty strong possibility that answer is yes too.

Try this tangible, physical way to accept shots and move on. Because the only way to hit the next shot with full commitment and trust (which is your only job after all) is to fully accept the previous shot and move on.

74: What You Can Learn from Tiger and Dustin at the 2020 Masters30 Nov 202000:13:59

At first glance, Tiger and Dustin Johnson are very different people. Personality-wise who could be more different? But they share one super important trait that you can do and can directly help you play better. Listen to hear what it is!

73: Bad Shots are Inevitable. So Why Aren’t You Ready for Them?29 Nov 202000:16:37

When was the last time you played a round of golf without a bogey? It's not exactly common. How about something even more rare - playing a round without a bad shot/swing/chip/putt? It doesn't happen. Ben Hogan famously said even in his best rounds he only hit 1 or 2 perfect shots.

So it's essential that you prepare mentally for bad shots, holes, scores, and tournaments. Listen for a way to do it.

72: Your Game Doesn’t Change Overnight28 Nov 202000:14:59

2 day streak! Still going... for now.

The topic of this episode was inspired by working with one of my players who felt they were a totally different golfer from one day to the next. But he (and all of us) need to realize an important truth about our game. Listen to hear it!

Change Your Game for the Better w/ Jayson Nickol (Part 1)14 Nov 202300:44:02

On this episode we’ve got Jayson Nickol.

Jayson is a military veteran, a swing instructor on Skillest, but even more than that he’s a coach of the whole game. We have some fascinating stuff on this one. We talk about:

  • Jayson’s history with injury and how that makes him particularly well-equipped to help golfers swing within their own bodies
  • He’s got an insane story about an injury he got while on the battlefield
  • We also talk a lot about Chasing Scratch, and particularly his work with Mike from Chasing Scratch. There’s some good stuff in there that can apply to all of us.
  • Jayson lays out what his responsibility is as a coach in working with a player, but also what our responsibilities are in order to improve.

This is just a great conversation with a great guy.

71: How to Take Control of Your Own Improvement27 Nov 202000:15:11

Yes I'm going to do this to myself. I'm going to commit to doing a daily podcast. Even if it's just something small and unedited. I want to consistently give you guys something to think about that's been on my mind, or that I've learned, or that I've discussed with one of my own mental coaching players, or just random thoughts.

I already know I'm not going to pull off a daily show, so I'm going to pre-accept that failure (foreshadowing to a future episode 😉). But I'm going to put this routine in place, and attempt to take intentional control of my journey.

Speaking of taking intentional control of my journey, this episode is all about putting in a consistent process to help you always be moving forward towards improvement, and being able to catch yourself in the middle of sliding backwards. No plateaus allowed!

69: How a Regular Person Can Become a Scratch Golfer w/ Sean Denning of parmachine.com23 Oct 202000:34:14

Sean Denning is just a "regular guy". He works a regular job. Has a regular family. Has regular time constraints. Yet he improved his handicap from around a 4, into a scratch in just over a year. Now at first glance that might not sound like a lot and it might sound like a long time. But look at your improvement during your own life. Has it been dramatic? Has it been fast? If you're like me, then most likely not. Improvement is slow in golf, and making big strides is really difficult. And the better you are the harder it gets to improve even further.

But what I like about this conversation and Sean's story is that he did it with an hour here and an hour there. He didn't have a tour player schedule. But HOW he spent his time is what made the difference. If you don't have quantity, then extreme quality will have to do.

Hope you enjoyed this episode, because I know I did.

66: The Best Definition of Process I’ve Ever Heard w/ Kellen Lee, CMPC25 Sep 202000:59:36

You've heard the phrase "Stick to the process" or "focus on the process" or "the process is more important than the result" right? Probably more than you'd like. But what does it mean?

This conversation with Kellen Lee, one of the mental coaches for the San Francisco Giants baseball organization, dives deep into that very topic, and how having a clear process can actually help you play better. And not to mention a ton of other super valuable stuff.

I hope you enjoy!

64: Where to Find Your Golf Motivation w/ Scott Barnicle, PhD, CMPC16 Sep 202000:39:15

Do you focus on result throughout most of every round? Do you get disappointed when you don't play perfect? Where do you get your source of satisfaction and enjoyment in golf? Do you get it from external sources like shot, or score, or tournament finish?

On this episode Josh has a conversation Scott Barnicle, a professor at West Virginia University with a PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant. He has coached college golf, works with athletes in many different sports, and has some great insights on what it takes to be a mentally strong golfer.

63: Why the Mental Game is Vital w/ Dr. Lindsey Blom02 Sep 202000:30:10

How much of golf would you say is mental and how much is physical?

50/50? 60/40? 20/80?

Regardless you will scarcely find someone that thinks it's all physical and no mental. So then does your practice time reflect those percentages? If you think any part of golf is mental then you should incorporate at least some mental training into your regimen, and Dr. Lindsey Blom makes a great case for that in this episode.
