| AI for Connection: Building Community in a Digital Age | 15 Sep 2025 | 00:42:12 | |
So much of our technology promises us freedom from friction. One click, instant results, fewer awkward conversations with strangers. But what if friction—the messy, human kind—isn’t the problem to be solved, but the very thing that makes life worth living? In this episode, Sophie Tidman talks with Rob Chapman, co-founder of Neya, a young AI company with a countercultural aim: not to make us faster or leaner, but to help us belong. Together they explore what happens when we resist the cult of efficiency and instead design tools that deepen trust and weave people back into each other’s lives. It’s a conversation about community, leadership, and the strange paradox that in trying to make everything smoother, we risk sanding away the very rough edges that give our connections—and our organizations—their meaning. If you'd like a reading list(!) here are the books we refer to in the podcast:

| Leadership in the New Chaos | 12 May 2025 | 00:27:37 | |
Leadership and the new chaos. It's not just you. Leaders everywhere are overwhelmed, and not because they're doing something wrong. The world has changed. Chaos isn't the exception anymore. It's the norm. In this episode, we explore how to lead when the map keeps redrawing itself under your feet. Carolyn Norgate and Carolyn Parker revisit and expand on their earlier podcast about leadership in today's increasingly unpredictable world. Six months ago, they saw a glimmer of optimism. Today, the sentiment is more complex. The leaders are working harder, facing more demands and feeling less impact. They delve into what it means to lead in an era where answers have a short shelf life, where leadership must be adaptive, relational and reflective, they discuss the limitations of traditional leadership models and share insights that challenge the myth of the heroic leader and how embracing vulnerability, creative Inquiry and collective sense making can pave the way to a more human, connected approach to navigating the chaos. | The Theory vs Reality of a Mission-led Government (Community Event) | 16 Dec 2024 | 00:29:43
In today’s episode you can listen back to highlights from our mission-led government event, hosted by Sophie Tidman and Carolyn Norgate. Who offered up our thoughts on the theory vs reality of a mission-led government, with some frameworks, techniques and methodology for how to begin implementing this new approach into the living system of the civil service and beyond. We were joined by lots of lovely members of our community for some rich discussions and sense-making around what we are noticing about the new government’s mission-led approach, what’s new, what’s different and the potential challenges are to working in this way. We’re hearing that there is real energy and appetite for change, but people don’t know how or where to start. How do we harness that energy instead of dousing it with the ‘cold bucket of water’ that can be the pressures of delivering on the day job too. You will hear Sophie and Carolyn referring to some slides, if you would like a copy of the slides used at the event please just drop us a line and we’d be happy to send you a copy. If you work in the civil service, just to let you know we have some open and closed offerings on the government campus should you wish to delve deeper into this with us. If you would like to talk more on mission-led with us, or anything else, please don't hesitate to get in touch, we're always happy to have an informal chat. Thanks so much for listening! | Find out how Mayvin's latest staff cohort feel about being in an action learning set | 05 May 2023 | 00:25:01
Here at Mayvin, we do our best to walk our talk. So we offer our employees the opportunity to participate in a development programme similar to the ones we deliver for our clients. It's great for them to experience an action learning set example. Our wonderful associate Cathy Korn is facilitating our latest programme of seven employees across operations, client management and marketing. The aim of the programme is to assist participants with personal practice development and to encourage relationships across the team. Like our client interventions, this programme had no rigid framework, allowing the participants to decide together what they would explore. It involved learning with and through peers. It was focused on inquiry, not problem solving. And contains theory bursts, but only where appropriate to the exploration being undertaken. Kept the exploration close to the grain of our real work and uses Action Learning Sets. The programme is at the halfway mark. So the participants came together to reflect on their experience so far to share with you. And here it is, enjoy. Thanks so much for listening! Keep in touch:

| Why does the way leaders and OD practitioners show up matter? And how can the self be useful in their work? | 13 Oct 2022 | 00:54:44 | |
This podcast is all about using the self as an instrument. As discussed by Mayvin director Martin Saville and Principal Consultant, Carolyn Norgate. Within seconds of talking on the subject, both Martin and Carolyn mentioned Mee-yan Cheung-Judge. Her name is so synonymous with this topic. Especially due to her seminal paper in 2001: The self as an instrument a cornerstone for the future of OD. Sadly, only a couple of days after this podcast was recorded Mee-yan passed away. So we would like to dedicate this episode to her. She was such an influential person in the world of OD. But also specifically for Mayvin, and our individual consultants that work here too. During Martin and Carolyn's chat, this subject crosses over, tangles, relates to so many other topics. Thanks so much for listening! Keep in touch:

| Why is it important to make space for thinking time between activities at work? | 08 Sep 2022 | 00:36:51 | |
The fertile void is one of the most read articles on our website. So we decided to delve deeper into the topic of making space for thinking time between one activity and another. In this podcast episode, James Trager and Tony Fraser, discussed the fertile void and Gestalt psychology in the context of organisations. Tony reflects that often in organisations, activity and action, or being busy, can be confused with being productive and gaining results. Taking thinking time – time to reflect, to think creatively, to stare out of the window is countercultural. We’re taught from an early age, don’t just sit there, do something. But instead, in business the opposite, is sometimes more appropriate. Don’t just do something, sit there. Ceaseless driven activity, without a chance to stop can leave leaders with loss of meaning and purpose, on a bit of a hamster wheel, not getting anywhere and not creatively adapting. The fertile void, is a blank open space between what’s been done and what needs to be done now or next. It’s a chance to stand back and see what’s important and have some undirected thinking time. It’s not filled with to do lists and signposts. The value of individuals or organisations recognising the fertile void, is that it can give the opportunity for satisfaction, recognising progress and giving meaning so that people feel better about an activity. It’s an opportunity for creativity, something unexpected, something different to make itself known, making space for that. Priorities. There’ll be competing demands and giving yourself time to choose instead of just jumping into the next thing. And finally recognising something is complete. But we don’t want to tell you too much otherwise there will nothing there for James and Tony to say. So we’ll pass it over to them. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks so much for listening! Keep in touch:

| Management and Leadership Development Programmes That Actually Work | 29 Jul 2022 | 00:57:51 | |
For many, the current approach to designing and implementing leadership and management development programmes isn't quite hitting the mark. Over the last 10 years Mayvin has delivered programmes across the private, public and third sectors. We have learnt a lot about how to design programmes that work receiving feedback such as: "the best learning I have attended in my whole career" "had a huge impact on both my professional and personal life" "I cannot express how I much I have enjoyed this programme and how much impact is has had on me" "made a tremendous difference to how I work and how I feel about work" We also know how to get them accredited at Post Graduate levels, culminating in our recently launched Masters in People and Organisation Development. So we hosted an online community event where we posed the question: What is the difference that makes the difference in programme design? At the event, we shared our experiences in designing and delivering what our participants call life changing and hugely impactful programmes. We also opened it up to group inquiry, asking everyone in the room what their experiences were for the good and for the bad. It was a really rich discussion and we have turned it into a Podcast episode for you to listen to. Thanks so much for listening! Keep in touch:
