| #111 How to Get Noticed in FB Groups as a Virtual Assistant | 10 May 2022 | 00:15:24 | |
When you start working as a virtual assistant sometimes it is hard to know where to find the right clients and what you can do to get noticed. One great source to do this is Facebook groups. There are Facebook groups where your clients are hanging out, you just need to find them and connect with them. In this episode, I’ll show you how you can show up as yourself and know what to say in these groups to get noticed without being too spammy, desperate, or annoying. Let me be your motivator today to get active in Facebook groups, even though it might seem like some of them are not working. There's also a lot of Facebook groups that are working right now, the ones where people are coming together to purposefully hire each other. I think those Facebook groups are the biggest ones to go in. I do share a list of Facebook groups with my students to help them get started. And then what's nice is we can go tag each other in some of these because we know which ones are working. So if you're interested, the Unicorn Digital Marketing Assistant School will open again in October. Links I mentioned: Quiz: What kind of VA should you be? | #107 The ex-hedge fund manager who helps women create healthy money habits | 12 Apr 2022 | 00:58:06
This week we’re talking money with Chelsea Brennan of Smart Money Mamas. Giving up a lucrative career as a hedge fund manager, Chelsea pursued a passion project after realizing many women were naive about finances, especially long term goals and strategies. That’s why Chelsea started Smart Money Mamas, to help women feel confident about dealing with their family’s finances. As Chelsea explains, “Having some sense of what’s happening with your finances, where your money is going, what your credit score is, offers that mental sense of security so you can do more.” Today, Chelsea is going to discuss our business owner money mindset. As freelancers, we have to understand our business finances in order to create plans for success, but more importantly, we must recognize our money beliefs - what’s propelling us forward and what’s holding us back. Changing old money habits and creating new ones isn’t as easy as saying a new mantra. You first have to dig a little deeper and find out why you are holding on to this old belief. Chelsea has several great tips and techniques to help you achieve this and how to start new habits around money. I picked up some great information and think you will too.
Enjoy!

What is it really like to work as a virtual executive assistant? Kiri Mohan shares her startup story, how she pivoted into EA-VA work, where she found her first clients, and what her service packages look like. If you have administrative experience, this episode is totally for you! I love this niche because she serves high-level executives and offers various levels of support that fit her lifestyle too. Kiri began working as an assistant when she was 15 years old, gradually shifting to a corporate executive assistant, and finally running her own successful virtual assistant company. Clients would often reach out in need of VA services and after a while, Kiri was able to figure out which client actually needed a VA and which ones only thought they needed a VA. It turns out, quite a few of her clients just needed an organized flow to the administrative side of their business. Source Your Systems began as a side business, helping those that needed to set up and implement the operational part of their dream, and then became something so much larger. I hope you enjoy!

| #102 How I’ve Gone From Underpaid VA to Digital Unicorn | 08 Mar 2022 | 00:24:09 | |
Underpaid? When I started freelancing in 2009 I was charging $10 an hour. I didn’t know any better and I didn’t have any mentors to advise me. I’m not proud of that wage, but over time things changed. Now I’m charging my worth while I work with the clients I love. In this episode I’ll tell you how I went from an underpaid VA to a digital unicorn, and how you can avoid that same pitfall. I started working online after leaving my dream job and having my first child. We moved a lot due to my husband’s military career, and I knew I needed something that I could do from home and take with me. I started working with a small business owner, remotely helping them with their presence online. I enjoyed the work and started taking on more clients. I became that accidental freelancer who realizes, this is a real job that can pay well.
Since I didn’t have anyone to ask questions or guide me, I just figured it out along the way…hence the low beginning prices. I’m not gonna lie. It was tough at first. If I had had someone whispering in my ear, “do it this way, Emily,” I would have raised my prices long, long ago as my confidence and skillset grew. But that’s okay. The whole experience got me to where I’m today. And now I’m sharing what steps you’ll want to take to avoid my mistakes. I want you armed with the knowledge so you can have a profitable business much sooner.

| #101 The small business owner who became a unicorn digital marketer | 01 Mar 2022 | 00:49:42 | |
Keri McDonnell is one of my students who worked in corporate for many years before relocating to follow her husband’s career and then starting a dog grooming business. After 10 years she had to move again and leave her established clientele. Since Keri’s passion is helping others, she wanted to find something online where she could relocate when her husband had to and take her clients with her.
That’s when she saw my ad. She did her research, watched my webinar, and then decided to jump into my unicorn digital marketing world. Keri understood being a solopreneur and wanted to help business owners behind the scenes to achieve their goals.
Keri found her first client after a week of starting the course. Despite her fear of not being techy enough, Keri jumped in and gave it a try. Her commitment to herself and dedication to doing her best helped her advance quickly. Now Keri is booked out helping small business owners with social media, launch support, and project management.
But it wasn’t without challenges. Keri's doubts almost stopped her before she got started, but readily admits my course gave her the foundation she needed to work as a unicorn digital marketer. The course got her up to speed and gave her the confidence she needed. She’s also very thankful for having an amazing network inside the student group and later the Digital Marketing Workgroup to help her succeed.
If you’ve got doubts about whether you can do this type of work, listen to Keri’s story and then go back to episode #100 to hear Natasha’s story. If these ladies can do it, so can you. Natasha is one of my course alumni. I had invited her to join my beta group because I saw her potential. I knew she could succeed at digital marketing even though she didn’t have any experience. She didn’t see the potential in herself and passed on the invite. When the second launch came around she took a leap of faith, in herself, and joined the class. Nearly all of us can relate to what Natasha shares about her journey. You’ll hear her joys and struggles as she finished the course and started taking on clients. It’s not always a bed of roses for us digital marketers, but if you focus on your end goal, like Natasha did, you’ll make it through the challenges and grow your confidence.

| #97 3 Things You Don’t Need for Your Business (that everyone tells you that you need) | 01 Feb 2022 | 00:16:58 | |
In the online space you have to be careful about watching others and thinking that’s what you need to be doing. A digital marketing services or virtual assistant business has a very low start-up cost. But then you start hearing the stories and seeing the fancy tools, and you might start second guessing yourself. Don’t let it stop you! In reality, you don’t have to have all of these “things” to be able to start your business. I see mega VA courses selling the idea of perfect workflows, systems, project management tools, websites. But who will hire you if you can’t do the work or know what you’re doing? It starts there. And these three things we’re talking about today…. They can all happen later with time. Drop them. It’s not your priority. Ready to take your skillset to the online space, create packages and position yourself to be a self-employed freelancer? The “How to Make a Living on Your Own Terms” live workshop is happening the week of March 7, 2022. Stay tuned for details! Links Mentioned: Episodes Mentioned: Connect with Emily:

| #95 The SAHM + MOPS leader who finds herself with online work | 18 Jan 2022 | 00:59:32 | |
“I needed something that didn’t center around my kids,” said Britteney Barber who is a mom of three, Space Force spouse, and former elementary school teacher. She loved volunteering with MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) so much she stayed in leadership positions for a decade. The volunteer work made her a better mom, wife, and friend. (Moms, I know you get this) It gave her a sense of purpose and kept her brain out of mom fog. She desired to keep doing the same work but wanted to get paid for it when her kids all went to school. That’s when Britteney found me and my digital marketing course and started her new freelance business. She was looking for a part-time job that: allowed her to be a mom first, moved with her in the military lifestyle, and gave her all the flexibility. Her business took off, she found her golden ring client, and the virtual work that met her checklist of requirements to be her dream job. In this episode, Britteney shares her advice for getting hired, standing out in Facebook groups, working virtually, and finding those first clients… plus what’s not-so-special about her and where she credits all of her self-employed success.

| #94 The property manager who discovered virtual assistant work (Claudia Bretz) | 11 Jan 2022 | 01:04:21 | |
Claudia Bretz is all too familiar with the problems of trying to find meaningful work as an over-qualified, over-educated Army spouse. She went to school for industrial engineering in her home country of Nicaragua before starting over in the U.S., got her MBA and was always starting at the bottom of the totem pole with work. Two years ago, Claudia was caught in a transition between being unemployed, waiting out the kids last semester of school, retiring and moving (and living on a boat in the Florida Keys) when she decided to give the online work a go.She signed up for the Unicorn Digital Marketing Assistant School, formerly known as the Digital Media VA Crash Course, and was dedicated to completing every lesson and teaching herself. And she just never went back to the office. She went from a $14/hr job to $35/hr working in half the time. Here’s her start-up story, what she’s learned as a new digital marketing assistant, and how she started doing the work and niched down. She shares advice when working with new clients, what her Pinterest and project management work really looks like, and the evolution from assistant to strategist. I hope you walk away inspired, informed, and motivated to start your own unicorn digital marketing business. Connect with Claudia: Connect with Emily:

Want to start a virtual assistant business but afraid the cost will set you back? Good news: starting a virtual assistant business doesn’t require investing a ton of cash in the very beginning. There is a super low start-up cost and barrier to entry. And you can easily make your money back if you have the marketable skills and ability to perform the client work. I’m all about doing things as inexpensively as possible until you start to book out with clients and can make back the cost of software, etc. You can get by with the bare minimums and use free or low cost versions of online programs. In today’s episode I’ll share what I started with and some I still use today because I don’t believe in throwing money away for unnecessary items. | #91 Ten profitable niches for virtual assistants | 07 Dec 2021 | 00:19:39
I built my business on being a unicorn, a virtual assistant who can perform a variety of tasks for online business owners aka “can do'' attitude. When someone asked me to do a new - to me - task, I always said yes because I knew I could enhance my skillset and because I love to do new things. I teach my students the same philosophy. Get your foot in the door with one task and offer to help in others. There does come a time when my students or any newer virtual assistants start to gravitate towards certain areas of interest more than others and that’s when they think about specializing in niches. They’ve tried a variety of things and now know where their passion and strengths lie. Although it’s smart to focus on doing work you enjoy, it also makes sense to find a niche that is in demand. I’ve found there are 10 areas or niches that are consistently in demand and command higher prices. If you’re ready to niche down, then check out my list. Some of these may surprise you!

| #206 How to Support Course Creator Clients with Legal Protections with Lawyer Autumn Witt Boyd | 07 May 2024 | 01:05:29 | |
An often overlooked part of the online business world: copyright and legal safeguards. Today we’re diving into legal protection for our clients who produce digital courses, memberships, and coaching programs. Sometimes they forget to do some of the most basic things. I cover some of this inside my signature program, the Unicorn Digital Marketing Assistant School, but we need to have a bigger conversation. My guest is lawyer Autumn Witt Boyd who has helped some big names like Amy Porterfield and Jasmine Star build, protect and scale their businesses. After spending the first 10 years of her career battling over copyrights and business issues in courtrooms across the U.S., Autumn left Big Law behind to start the AWB Firm in 2015 so she could spend her days helping entrepreneurs instead of fighting with other lawyers. Listen in to learn more about
I love Autumn’s advice because you can apply what she teaches to your own service provider business. I see a lot of new VAs get stuck in this startup phase thinking about all the legal protections they need for themselves. Don't let the legal part stop you from taking action.

Grace Fortune is an online course strategist and copywriter who has had more jobs than she can count including an unfortunate gig handling toxic chemicals. She’s joining us to share her four essential business processes just for freelancers.
I’ll admit being organized and having processes is not my strongpoint, yet is something every freelancer should have for things like onboarding or off-boarding clients and all things going on behind the scenes.
Her passion for processes stems from seeing countless business owners and other freelancers feel overwhelmed and lost because they feel like they're reinventing the wheel every time they take on a new project and are in feast or famine most when it comes to getting a steady pipeline of clients.
While working with Sandra Booker of Any Old Task servicing clients like Chanti Zak, Grace learned all about how to get rid of overwhelm and consistently sign on work by using these vital processes.
