Redefining Life with Incurable Cancer with JJ Singleton28 Jul 202600:42:29

When JJ Singleton was just 27 years old, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer—a disease he believed only affected older adults. After surgery and chemotherapy, he thought cancer was behind him. Just weeks later, it returned.

Today, more than a decade later, JJ is living with stable but incurable cancer after a clinical trial became the treatment that changed—and ultimately saved—his life.

In this inspiring conversation, JJ shares what it's like to live with cancer long-term, the emotional toll of isolation, why patients must become their own advocates, and how breakthroughs in biomarkers, immunotherapy, and clinical trials are changing the future of cancer care.

In this episode, we discuss:

  •  JJ's colorectal cancer diagnosis at age 27
  •  Ignoring symptoms because "I'm too young for cancer"
  •  Losing 80% of his colon
  •  When cancer returned only weeks after chemotherapy
  •  Living with stable but incurable cancer for over ten years
  •  The clinical trial that became his lifesaving treatment
  •  Why biomarkers and personalized medicine matter
  •  How AI is beginning to improve cancer care
  •  The unique challenges of rural cancer patients
  •  The importance of finding community after diagnosis
  •  Why patients should ask more questions and advocate for themselves
  •  Finding balance instead of trying to do everything "perfectly"
  •  The future of clinical trials and targeted therapies

Whether you're a patient, survivor, caregiver, or simply someone wanting to better understand today's cancer landscape, this episode is filled with hope, honesty, and practical wisdom.

Solo Episode - It's OK to Not Be OK13 Aug 202400:19:43

Today's episode is a solo episode. Technical difficulties in the recording of my last two interviews made them unusable. So while I work to get them rerecorded, it's a great time to talk about this topic.

I have seen multiple instances over the past couple weeks of friends (and myself) not being OK and feeling guilty because they weren't OK.

I want to break this down and talk about emotions and grief and how we can be OK not being OK.

My guest this week is Diane Simard, a powerhouse survivor and advocate!!

Her book is about how COPE was her life raft out of cancer’s psychological trauma and why she now advocates to bring compassionate healing to those who experience cancer's emotional scars.

Solo Episode - The Best Advice to Give and Receive26 Jul 202400:20:09

Today's solo episode is something that has been on my heart almost since I was diagnosed. I love people who are supportive and there for their loved ones.

When I was first diagnosed, I didn't tell anyone outside my immediate family and a few close friends. I didn't want a lot of unsolicited advice. I was overwhelmed by the solicited advice I was getting from my medical team. I know people mean well and naturally want to "fix" things and make them better. That's usually not possible when faced with a cancer diagnosis.

On the other side, people come to me asking for advice on what they should do, which treatments they should have, etc. That's another slippery slope. What do you tell someone asking for this kind of advice?

We break it all down in this episode. How to handle those situations, no matter which end you are on. Granted, it's only my opinion, and I'm continuing to learn. These are some tips that have worked for me.

Let me know what you think of the episode and how you're going to use this information going forward. You can reach me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/melissagrosboll/, email me at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com, or text me at 720-201-4292

Solo Episode - Gratitude28 Jun 202400:18:18

Today's solo episode is all about gratitude. The whole idea of this podcast is stories of hope and inspiration.

While cancer is not inherently something to be grateful for, the practice of gratitude has been clinically shown to improve mood, health, and well-being.

So many amazing ideas, new products, and non-profit organizations have come about because someone had cancer and created something for others out of that. Advocacy, kindness, empathy and compassion all can be blessings from cancer.

You don't have to have cancer to practice gratitude. It's available to everyone.

I share in this episode how gratitude helped me in my darkest time, how it continues to be a daily part of my life, and how you can start to incorporate it into your life.

I'd love for you to leave me a comment, reach out to me on Instagram @melissagrosboll, email me at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com, or text me at 720-201-4292 how you're incorporating gratitude into your life and one thing you are grateful for today.

How our Child's Cancer Helped Strengthen Our Marriage with Andrew and Whitney Martin11 Jun 202400:41:11

Today's guests are Andrew and Whitney Martin. Their daughter, Rowen, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 3. Their lives became all about her. Divvying up caregiving and still trying to live a normal life and raising a toddler as well.

They quickly learned their strengths and became a team. Andrew was in charge of the at home chemo and treatments and Whitney was the "boots on the ground" at the hospital and with the medical team.

When Rowen's cancer journey was over, Whitney and Andrew had to get to know each other again. They weren't the same people they were before. They made the choice to appreciate one another for who they have become.

We talk about marriage and their lives during Rowen's treatment and their own healing once Rowen was cleared. It's a great conversation about advocacy, self care, and giving yourself grace in the hard times.

Please let me know any takeaways you've gotten from this episode or any other. I want to hear from you! You can reach me on Instagram @melissagrosboll, email me at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com, or text me at 720-201-4292.

Caregivers Need Self Care Too with Mary Grace04 Jun 202400:34:52

Today's guest is Mary Grace. Mary was the primary caregiver for her brother, who battled and passed from pancreatic cancer.

Mary's story is important because being a caregiver is a difficult job. Caregivers tend to lose themselves caring for another and we talk about what that's like, as well as why it's so crucial that they take care of themselves during this time.

It's a great chat and we touched on a lot of aspects of caregiving. If you have a caregiver right now, this is a great listen. If you are a caregiver, we talk about ways to take care of yourself as well as your patient.

Please let me know any takeaways you've gotten from this episode or any other. I want to hear from you! You can reach me on Instagram @melissagrosboll, email me at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com, or text me at 720-201-4292.

Solo Episode - Survivor's Guilt26 Apr 202400:14:02

Today's episode is about a topic that I was recently introduced to and I deal with from my own cancer journey. It's about survivor's guilt. The feeling that, since my treatment wasn't as intensive as other people, I'm somehow less deserving of being a cancer survivor. Other people had it worse so I shouldn't make a big deal about it.

We're gonna discuss this today because I think it's very important.

We'll be doing these episodes once a month or so and I'd love to hear from you any topics you'd like me to discuss apart from the interview shows.

I want to get to know you!! Please let me know about you and any takeaways you've gotten from this episode or any other. You can reach me on Instagram @melissagrosboll, email me at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com, or text me at 720-201-4292.

Healing Beyond The Cancer Diagnosis with Edna Castillo14 Jul 202600:46:11

Cancer treatment often focuses on surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and medications—but what about the emotional side of healing?

This week, Melissa sits down with cancer thriver, speaker, coach, and bestselling author Edna Castillo to explore how calming the nervous system, listening to your intuition, and processing emotions can profoundly change the cancer experience.

After being diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer during the height of COVID, Edna underwent sixteen rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation while intentionally practicing techniques that helped her move from fear toward peace. Today she teaches those same tools through her Calm the Chaos of Cancer method.

Together, Melissa and Edna discuss:

  •  Why healing is different from curing
  •  The impact of living in "fight mode" during treatment
  •  Trusting your intuition when making medical decisions
  •  Learning to advocate for yourself with your healthcare team
  •  How breathing can calm the nervous system in moments of fear
  •  Finding gratitude without pretending everything is okay
  •  Why community is one of the most powerful forms of healing
  •  Seeing cancer as one chapter of your life—not your entire story

Whether you're newly diagnosed, years beyond treatment, or supporting someone you love, this conversation offers practical tools and gentle encouragement for navigating cancer with greater peace and resilience.

He's also a liver cancer survivor, due to the miracle of the living liver donor program. The liver is the one organ that can regenerate and can, therefore, be donated by someone still living. Truly a miracle of modern medicine.

We talk all about the living donor program and process, becoming an advocate for organ donation, healing and taking care of your health, staying positive, and so much more.

If you're interested in being an organ donor, living or after death, check out the link below or register with your local DMV.
