iRacing: When Should You Walk Away?14 Oct 202600:46:05

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

When should you walk away from an iRacing car or series?

We’re often told that the secret to improving in iRacing is simple: choose a car, choose a series and stick with it.

But what happens when it just isn’t working?

In Season 5 Episode 6 of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we ask when perseverance is helping you become a better sim racer, and when it’s simply time to park the car and try something different.

We look at driving styles, difficult cars, choosing the right iRacing series, the sunk-cost trap and why one terrible week of racing shouldn’t automatically make you quit.

🎉 We also celebrate a huge milestone: 25,000 podcast downloads! A massive thank you to everyone who listens, watches, writes into the show and has become part of our growing Lone Road community.

💓 THE PULSE
We look at the Porsche Esports Supercup as the championship reaches its business end, the growing pathway from iRacing into real-world motorsport, the Skip Barber Formula Car Shootout, and the huge commitment involved in iRacing Special Events following the Bathurst 1000 and ahead of the Indianapolis 8 Hour.

🧔 iRACING AGONY UNCLE
This week's question:

How do you stay motivated after a bad week on iRacing?

When the iRating disappears, Safety Rating takes a hammering and every race seems to go wrong, should you keep racing to win it back or stop, reset and return with a different mindset?

iRacing: Have We Forgotten How to Race for Fun? | S5 E508 Oct 202600:35:02

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

Have we become so obsessed with iRating, Safety Rating and results that we've forgotten why we started sim racing in the first place?

In Season 5 Episode 5 of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy asks a simple question: if iRating disappeared tomorrow, would you race differently?

We look at iRacing's Track Day concept, mixed-class racing and the return of legacy cars as a possible way to put FUN back at the centre of sim racing.

🏁 Also in this week's PULSE:

• iRacing Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta
• Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH in endurance competition
• GT3 Regional Tours
• Track Day and legacy iRacing content
• SimRacing Expo Charlotte and what it tells us about the growth of sim racing
• Looking ahead to Sim Global Expo at the NEC Birmingham in January 2027

And in iRacing Agony Uncle, Steve races exclusively in VR and has switched OFF the virtual mirror for greater realism.

There's just one problem...

Sometimes he doesn't see the car alongside him.

So where should we draw the line between immersion, realism and situational awareness?

What Are You Actually Racing For? | iRating, Britcar 24 & iRacing Week 13 Madness | S5 E401 Oct 202600:38:05

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

What are you actually racing for in iRacing?

Is it iRating, Safety Rating, championship points, race wins, progression... or simply having fun?

In Season 5 Episode 4 of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson looks at how the goals we set can completely change the way we race, the decisions we make and whether we know when it's time to Bank the Result.

🏁 Also this week:

• Britcar 24 comes to the official iRacing Special Events calendar. What does 24 hours of GT3 and GT4 multiclass racing at Silverstone bring to the challenge?

• Weather Rerolls bring more unpredictability to official racing.

• Physics Islands might sound like an engineer's holiday destination, but the technology behind them could have a major impact on iRacing's future.

• iRacing Agony Uncle: What happens when you become so obsessed with protecting your iRating that you're actually frightened to race?

And finally...

🙈 The Week 13 blindfold driver.

Yes. Someone apparently decided seeing the racetrack was an optional extra.

Caterham 420R on iRacing: What Went Wrong?24 Sep 202600:40:30

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

The Caterham 420R has arrived on iRacing, and Guy's first week with it has been quite a journey.

Initially, the lightweight British racer was fantastic to drive... until it was time to accelerate out of a corner. Sudden oversteer and spins made the 420R a serious challenge, but following an iRacing update addressing the rear suspension, Guy's experience of the car changed dramatically.

So what happened?

In Season 5 Episode 3 of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we go back to where the Caterham story began, exploring the history of the Lotus Seven, Colin Chapman's lightweight philosophy, Caterham's takeover of the Seven and the development of the modern Caterham racing ladder.

Then, in Pulse, we examine the 420R's iRacing launch. Why did a suspension issue make it into the release build? Should it have been discovered during testing? Was the Caterham genuinely improved by the update, or, as some drivers argue, has iRacing simply made it easier?

And this week's iRacing Agony Uncle is for the newcomers:

What are the must-have apps for a new iRacer?

We look at Trading Paints, spotters, overlays, telemetry tools such as Garage61 and why filling your screen with data isn't necessarily going to make you a better racing driver.

🏁 This week:

• Caterham 420R first impressions
 • The history of the Lotus Seven
 • Colin Chapman's lightweight philosophy
 • How Caterham inherited the Seven
 • Caterham's racing heritage
 • The 420R on iRacing
 • What happened to the rear suspension?
 • Did iRacing release the car too early?
 • Has the update improved it or made it too easy?
 • Must-have apps for new iRacers
 • Trading Paints, overlays, spotters and telemetry
 • Why the driver still matters more than the software

Being faster doesn't give you the right to drive through the car ahead.

This week on The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we're using real racing footage to look at two sides of racecraft: knowing when to Bank the Result, and understanding why some iRacers catch another car only to punt it off instead of actually overtaking it.

iRacing: 5 Years on The Lone Road | Season 5 Premiere + Mike Ellis Interview10 Sep 202601:01:18

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

The Lone Road iRacing Podcast is FIVE years old, and Season 5 starts right here.

Five years ago, The Lone Road began with little more than a microphone, a love of iRacing and an idea. That very first episode received just 21 downloads.

Today, nearly 200 episodes later, the podcast has passed 23,000 downloads, reached iRacers around the world and grown into something I could never have imagined when I first pressed record.

For this special Season 5 premiere and fifth birthday episode, we're looking back at where The Lone Road began, including a snippet from those very early days, and looking ahead at what comes next.

I'm also joined by Mike Ellis from The iRacers Lounge for a very special conversation. There's a lovely bit of history here too, because iRacers Lounge played an unexpected part in the creation of The Lone Road all those years ago.

And Season 5 brings some changes...

❤️ A completely new Season 5 introduction and visual identity
📰 The Pulse, our new weekly iRacing news section
📩 The return of the iRacing Agony Uncle
🎙️ More interviews, conversations and community stories
🏁 More racecraft, mindset, improvement and real-world iRacing experiences
🔺 And the growing role of Project Apex, the home behind The Lone Road

This isn't a restart.

It's the next part of the journey.

Whether you've listened for five years or you've found The Lone Road for the very first time today, thank you for being part of it.

Welcome to Season 5.

Prepare. Perform. Progress.

SEASON 4 FINALE THE ROAD BEHIND. THE ROAD AHEAD03 Sep 202600:45:14

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

The chequered flag is out on Season 4 of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast!

For our final episode of the season, we're looking both behind us and ahead.

First, Guy dives into the brand-new iRacing August 2026 Development Update, exploring the latest cars, track updates, physics improvements, UI changes, multiclass developments, weather evolution, Career Mode and some of the technology that could shape the future of iRacing.

Then we turn the car around.

After 52 episodes, it's time to reflect on Season 4 of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast and some of the conversations, races and people that made this season memorable.

From racecraft, iRating and Safety Rating struggles to confidence, intentional wrecking, rookie racing, tyre management, strategy, Lap 1 chaos and learning when to simply bank the result, Season 4 has increasingly become about more than outright speed.

We also look back at the listener emails, Agony Uncle questions, interviews and community moments that have helped shape the podcast throughout the season.

And finally...

Season 5 is coming. ❤️

Stay right to the end of the episode because we're finishing Season 4 with the exclusive first reveal of the brand-new Season 5 intro.

No Agony Uncle this week.

Just one final lap of Season 4.

iRacing: What Would You Tell Your Rookie Self?27 Aug 202600:50:34

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

If you could go back to the day you first joined iRacing and give your rookie self five minutes of advice, what would you say?

After nearly six years on iRacing, Guy looks back at the lessons that turned out to matter most. And surprisingly, they're not really about finding more lap time.

This week on The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we explore the lessons experience teaches us that no setup guide or track tutorial can.

Respect the other drivers.
Own your mistakes and apologise.
Find smarter ways to overtake instead of relying on the divebomb.
Make good iRacing friends.
And above all... keep having fun.

We also look at our obsession with iRating and Safety Rating, why losing a position doesn't necessarily mean losing the battle, how racecraft develops with experience and why the people we meet can become one of the best parts of sim racing.

Then in this week's iRacing Agony Uncle:

How do I avoid the Lap 1 chaos?

We discuss braking earlier, reading the cars further ahead, recognising dangerous situations before they develop, leaving yourself an escape route, being predictable and changing your opening-lap objective from gaining positions to simply:

GET TO LAP 2.

Whether you've been on iRacing for six days or six years, there's something in this episode for all of us.

And when you've finished listening, answer this:

What would YOU tell your rookie iRacing self?

iRacing Licence Classes: Perception vs Reality20 Aug 202600:53:09

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

Does reaching A Class in iRacing actually mean you're a better, cleaner or more respectful racing driver?

When we first start iRacing, it's easy to imagine the licence ladder as a progression in driving ability. Rookie is where the chaos happens, D Class is where we're learning, C and B Class are increasingly experienced, and A Class is where everyone surely knows what they're doing.

But is that really what happens?

In this episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson explores the difference between our perception of the iRacing licence system and the reality of racing across Rookie, D, C, B and A Class.

We discuss why higher-licence drivers still make mistakes, why divebombs, poor judgement, frustration and road rage don't magically disappear at A Class, and why a lower licence doesn't necessarily mean poor racecraft.

The big lesson?

Race the driver. Not the badge.

We also look at the difference between Safety Rating, licence class, iRating and genuine racecraft, and why none of them individually tells you everything about the person you're racing.

This week's iRacing Agony Uncle

"I can't stop divebombing!"

A listener admits they've taken out several drivers by lunging into gaps and wants to change their racecraft.

We explore practical ways to break the habit, including one simple question to ask before attempting an overtake:

"If the other car disappeared right now, could I still make the corner?"

Plus, during the mid-show break, Guy introduces Project Apex, the new home for The Lone Road Podcast and the beginning of something much bigger.

Learn. Adapt. Improve.

The iRacing Process: Why I Stopped Chasing Results13 Aug 202600:41:20

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

What if the fastest way to improve your iRating… is to stop chasing it?

In this episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson looks back at the process that has taken his Formula iRating from just over 2,000 to more than 4,300, and why that same approach is now beginning to produce significant gains in Sports Cars.

And this isn't theory.

During one evening racing the Radical at the Nürburgring, three races produced three completely different outcomes:

🏁 P26 → P22 | -44 iRating after contact and an 8-minute repair
🏁 P23 → P10 | +38 iRating
🏁 P19 → P6 | +59 iRating

Overall: +53 iRating

But the most important thing wasn't the number.

The process never changed.

This episode explores how a Quality mindset can be applied to iRacing through consistency, repeatability, reproducibility and continuous improvement.

We discuss:

• Why one bad result doesn't necessarily mean you raced badly
 • Process vs outcome
 • How small decisions compound over hundreds of races
 • Why Guy stopped trying to win every race
 • The philosophy behind Bank the Result
• How to manage risk without becoming passive
• Why reviewing your races matters
• Plan, Do, Check, Act applied to sim racing
• Why you don't necessarily need paid setups to make major gains
• How the same approach is now transferring from Formula to Sports Cars

Perhaps the question isn't:

“How do I gain iRating?”

Perhaps it's:

“How do I become the kind of driver who gains iRating over hundreds of races?”

Have you ever hovered over the Register button in iRacing... only to back out because you didn't feel ready?

You're not alone.

In this episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson explores one of the most common but least talked about challenges in sim racing: the fear of racing online.

Inspired by a heartfelt email from listener Martin, we discuss why so many iRacers struggle with confidence, even when they have the pace, and why practising against AI can only take you so far.

Whether you're new to iRacing, returning after time away, or simply lacking confidence to race wheel-to-wheel, this episode is packed with practical advice to help you overcome the mental barriers holding you back.

In this episode:

• Why online racing can feel intimidating
• AI racing vs real online competition
• Building confidence behind the wheel
• Developing racecraft in official races
• Learning from mistakes without fear
• The confidence trap that keeps drivers in Test Drive
• Why every experienced iRacer once felt exactly the same

Remember...

Confidence isn't a requirement for racing. Racing is the requirement for confidence.

Has iRacing finally become too expensive?

For the first time in years, iRacing has announced an increase in subscription prices, sparking passionate debate throughout the sim racing community. Is the increase justified? Does iRacing still represent good value compared to other racing simulators and subscription-based games? Or is the cost of entry becoming too much for new drivers?

In this week's episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson takes a balanced look at one of the biggest talking points in sim racing, exploring both sides of the debate without the social media shouting.

This week's topics include:

🏁 iRacing's latest subscription price increase

🏁 Price vs Value - are they the same thing?

🏁 Comparing iRacing to Assetto Corsa, ACC, RaceRoom and other simulators

🏁 How does iRacing compare to subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus and World of Warcraft?

🏁 Is the hobby becoming too expensive for new drivers?

🏁 What are we actually paying for?

PLUS...

🎙️ The iRacing Agony Uncle

Listener Steve asks why his GT4 Porsche loses grip towards the end of races.

Is he destroying his tyres early?

How do the fastest drivers manage tyre wear?

And why is tyre management really about driving style rather than simply driving slower?

Whether you're a brand-new iRacer or a long-time veteran, there's something in this episode for everyone.

💬 Question of the Week

Has the subscription price increase changed your opinion of iRacing?

Do you still think it offers good value?

What does it really take to build and lead an iRacing community?

In this special interview episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, I sit down with James from JP Broadcasting for one of the most open and honest conversations we've ever had on the show.

We discuss the reality of running leagues, broadcasting live iRacing events, building a thriving Discord community, dealing with criticism, staff moving on, driver cliques, loyalty, leadership and the mental toll that can come from trying to keep everyone happy.

Most of us simply join a race and enjoy the experience. But behind every successful community are people investing countless hours to keep it all running.

Whether you're a league owner, broadcaster, content creator, Discord moderator or simply passionate about sim racing, this conversation offers a fascinating insight into the challenges that often go unseen.

This isn't just a conversation about iRacing.
It's a conversation about leadership, resilience and remembering why we started in the first place.

  • Brake discipline and why “sending it” loses more races than it wins
  • Throttle patience and how smooth exits quietly gain positions
  • Mirror awareness without panic
  • Emotional control and how to recover when things go wrong

Plus, we launch our brand new iRacing Agony Uncle segment, where a listener asks:

“How do I stop melting under pressure at race starts?”

If you get nervous on the grid, overdrive on Lap 1, or struggle when the pressure is on, this episode gives you practical habits to calm your mind and improve your results in iRacing.

This is racecraft, mindset, and performance — the stuff that actually builds iRating.

iRacing Mid-Season Checkpoint: Ratings, Reports & The Reset Plan (Season 1 2026)29 Jan 202600:30:58

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

We’ve hit the midpoint of iRacing Season 1 2026 and this is the first natural time to reflect honestly on how the season is going so far.

In this episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson breaks down his mid-season results across both disciplines, including:

  • Sports Car iRating +73
  • Formula iRating +347
  • Sports Car Safety Rating holding strong at 4.55
  • Formula Safety Rating improving by +1.31 to 2.67

But the midpoint isn’t just about numbers. We also talk about the state of racecraft, iRacing reporting culture (including reports submitted and received), and how to reset your mindset and strategy to finish the second half of the season stronger than you started.

🔥 PLUS… a brand new feature begins this week:

iRacing Agony Uncle

Listeners and viewers can now write into the show with real iRacing issues (no names, no drama) and Guy will break down the challenge and give a practical week-on-week plan to overcome it.

Why iRacers Can’t Race In Traffic (And How To Fix It) 22 Jan 202600:32:21

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

This week on The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we tackle one of the biggest missing skills in the entire service:

Why iRacers can’t race in traffic.

Most drivers can hotlap. Most drivers can qualify.
But the moment a race becomes side-by-side, nose-to-tail, or Lap 1 chaos in a big field… everything falls apart.

Using this week’s Ringmeister series and the hidden Legacy gem — the Legacy Mazda Pro — we break down why traffic causes so many crashes, why the mindset of drivers becomes dangerous, and how YOU can become one of the rare iRacers who gains positions simply by staying calm and making smart decisions.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why Ringmeister becomes a crashfest (especially Lap 1)
  • The 4 dangerous types of traffic drivers (and how to survive them)
  • What traffic skill actually is
  • A complete “traffic survival system” you can use in any series
  • How to practice traffic skill without ruining races
  • Why momentum cars like the Legacy Mazda Pro punish impatience

Because here’s the truth:
You don’t lose iRating because you’re slow… you lose it because you can’t drive near people.

iRacing but the "SMART" way!15 Jan 202600:27:46

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

This week on The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we’re breaking down what it really means to race smart — and why smart racing wins more iRating and championship points than aggressive driving ever will.

In this episode I’m using real race footage as the background, so you can watch the decisions unfold in real time.

✅ Qualified P17
✅ Finished P6
✅ Gained 11 positions
✅ Scored 11 championship points
✅ Only 1x incidents

No dive bombs. No chaos. No risky moves.
Just racecraft, patience, awareness, and smart decision-making — including how to:

  • Survive Lap 1 carnage
  • Yield safely to faster cars
  • Spot and avoid dive bombers
  • Manage backmarkers without throwing the race away
  • Collect points while others self-destruct

If you’ve ever felt like you’re fast enough to climb but keep losing iRating to crashes, this episode is for you.

🎙️ The iRacing Iron Man Event08 Jan 202600:15:17

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

What happens when a race removes every safety net?

 No pit strategy.
 No tyre games.
No short laps to reset your focus.

This week on The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we break down what I’m calling the iRacing Iron Man Event — the Ray FF1600 taking on the Nürburgring Combined Gesamtstrecke Long.

Nearly ten minutes per lap.
 Three laps per race.
Over 500 corners negotiated without pause.

This isn’t about raw pace — it’s about mental resilience, discipline, and sustained focus.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why this combo feels more like mental endurance than racing
  • How the Ray FF1600 exposes bad habits instantly
  • Why over 170 corners per lap changes how your brain works
  • A realistic race strategy for surviving all three laps
  • How mental fatigue ruins Lap 3 for most drivers
  • How iRacers should practice for long, no-reset races
  • Why finishing clean matters more than winning

If you’re stuck in an iRating plateau, struggling with consistency, or looking for a race that genuinely forces growth — this episode is for you.

iRacing’s Missing Fundamentals: What Rookie Class Isn’t Teaching New iRacers01 Jan 202600:19:36

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

Week 2 of Season 1, 2026 has exposed a growing problem in iRacing — missing fundamentals.

After  racing FIA F4 at the Adelaide Street Circuit this week, one thing has become clear: this isn’t just early-season chaos. It’s a systemic issue rooted in how Rookie class prepares new iRacers for real racing conditions.

In this episode of The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, Guy Robertson breaks down:

  • Why Week 2 chaos is no longer “bad luck”
  • What Rookie class actually teaches — and what it doesn’t
  • Why street circuits brutally expose missing racecraft fundamentals
  • The growing rejoin and dive-bomb problem
  • Whether demotion should exist as an educational tool
  • How broken practice culture feeds panic and poor decisions
  • What both new and experienced drivers can do right now to survive early-season wreckfests

This episode isn’t about blaming rookies — it’s about improving race quality, protecting Safety Rating, and building better racers from the ground up.

If you’ve lost iRating, been caught up in unnecessary incidents, or wondered why race standards feel worse each season, this one’s for you.

iRacing Race Strategy – Knowing When NOT to Race24 Dec 202500:15:21

Comment on the show?..send me a text!

Race strategy isn’t about pit stops — it’s about patience.

This week on The Lone Road iRacing Podcast, we dive deep into race strategy across short tracks, normal road circuits, and long-form monsters like the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Using a real-world example from this week’s MX-5 races at the Nordschleife, we break down why so many races are effectively lost on Lap 1 — and how restraint, risk management, and emotional control can quietly gain you double-digit positions without a single overtake.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why Lap 1 chaos is almost always self-inflicted
  • Strategy differences between short tracks and long circuits
  • When aggression helps — and when it destroys your race
  • How emotional driving kills results
  • Why “doing nothing” is sometimes the fastest strategy of all

If you’ve ever wondered why your pace doesn’t match your finishing positions — this episode is for you.
