In this episode, Jonathan Greene, a writer and small business owner, shares his extraordinary life journey from jail to joy. Greene's story takes us from the bustling streets of California to the jail cells of Pennsylvania, from a life of fast money and faster living to a state prison. His tale is not one of despair but redemption and transformation.

This episode is a raw, honest testament to the power of change, the importance of second chances, and the incredible strength of the human spirit.

Major Takeaways:

  2. The turning point in Jonathan's life.
  3. The power of transformation and second chances.

Jonathan Greene's journey from a life on the edge to redemption: Greene gives a vivid account of his past, where he was caught in the whirlwind of quick riches and fast-paced, risky living. This part of his life led him to serve time in a Pennsylvania state prison. However, Greene's story is not one of despair but of redemption and transformation.

The turning point in Jonathan's life: The birth of his daughter marked a transformative moment in Greene's life. During a visit, while he was in prison, his one-year-old daughter looked at him, and something clicked. He decided then and there that he never wanted his daughter to see him like that again. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Jonathan's life shift.

The power of transformation and second chances: Greene's incredible story is a stark reminder of the power of transformation and the importance of second chances. Despite adversity, Greene emerged stronger and more determined, his story a testament to the human spirit and the enduring ability to change life's direction.

DaVon and Greene (the pen name of Jonathan Greene) always knew writing was in his blood. He grew up as the son of author and composer BB Johnson, AKA Joseph Greene, who wrote Together Brothers and Across the Alley from the Alamo. Drawn towards cartels, crime, and drugs, DaVon and Greene completed his first serious undertaking in his early teens. After an underwhelming critique from his father’s friend, Saul David (Director of Logan’s Run and Fantastic Voyage), DaVon and Greene put down the pen and entered the world that he wrote about in an endless cycle that there was no escape from, ultimately leading to incarceration.

Justin's story is a testament to the power of resilience, strategic planning, and the determination to control one's financial future.

Key Takeaways:

The Impact of Early Exposure to Entrepreneurship

Justin's parents ran a successful Supercuts franchise when he was growing up, sparking his interest in business from a young age. This exposure to entrepreneurship played a significant role in shaping Justin's career path. Despite the eventual downfall of his parents' businesses, Justin's early experiences kindled his entrepreneurial spirit, leading him to explore various side hustles.

The Power of Controlling Your Financial Future

One of Justin's most profound lessons from his parents' business failure and subsequent separation was the importance of financial stability. This realization motivated him to control his financial future so that money would never be a factor in his relationships. This mentality drove him to a dual life, combining a stable, nine-to-five job with various side hustles to secure his financial future.

The Transformative Journey from a Stable Job to a Successful Side Hustle

As a sponsorship coach, Justin now helps creators negotiate their dream partnerships with brands and companies, ensuring they are supported throughout their journey. Justin's story is a testament to the power of resilience, the desire for financial stability, and the entrepreneurial spirit. His journey from a stable engineering job to a successful side hustle is a must-listen for anyone seeking to take control of their financial future.

Justin Moore is a Sponsorship Coach & the founder of @CreatorWizard, a school & community that teaches you how to find & negotiate your dream brand deals so that you stop leaving thousands on the table.

He has been a full-time creator for over eight years, along with his wife, April, and has personally made over $4M working with brands. He also ran an influencer marketing agency for over seven years that has helped other creators earn an additional $3M.

Justin brings a unique perspective because not only has he been a creator in the trenches doing sponsorships for years, but by running an agency, he has insider knowledge of how big brands choose which influencers to partner with and why they pass on others. Justin's mission is to enable creators big and small to land 1 million paid brand partnerships by 2032.

This marked the start of her new career as an interior designer.

Understanding the dynamics of relationships plays a crucial role in Anita's approach to interior design. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, she prioritizes the relationships that exist within the space. This approach, rooted in her therapy work, allows her to create spaces that not only look good but also serve the people who inhabit them.

Finally, Anita's story underscores the importance of creativity and aesthetics in enhancing our spaces and relationships. Her creative upbringing, combined with her understanding of interpersonal dynamics, enables her to design spaces that nurture relationships. She believes that the spaces we inhabit and the relationships we form within them are deeply intertwined, and her work beautifully reflects this belief.

Anita Yokota is a therapist turned interior designer and author of the bestselling book, Home Therapy. With a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT), Anita spent 20 years and thousands of hours in the field counseling patients before realizing she craved a more creative path. "As a working mom, my emotional plate was full. I felt depleted and decided it was time for a change."

With an architect for a father and a real-estate mother, Anita knew interior design was her next calling. What started in her own home quickly expanded to design clients throughout Southern California and grew to include a contracting business with her husband.

The pair live in Southern California with their three daughters.

Empowering Change: From Rebel to Activist Leader | Nisha Anand14 Nov 202301:06:26

In this episode of The Life Shift Podcast, Nisha Anand, the CEO of Dream.org, takes us through her incredible journey from being a rebellious activist to a strategic activist. Her story is a testament to the power of empathy, strategic action, and being a misfit in creating significant social change.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Embrace being a misfit as your superpower
  2. The importance of considering the impact of your actions
  3. The power of empathy and strategic action in creating meaningful change

Nisha grew up as a misfit, bridging two cultures – her immigrant parents' Indian roots and her American upbringing. Instead of feeling alienated, Nisha embraced this uniqueness as her superpower. She notes that being a misfit allowed her to fit everywhere and become a bridge between different worlds, a trait that has significantly shaped her approach to social justice.

Nisha shared an impactful incident from college when she staged a protest against animal abuse at a circus. Despite the good intentions behind the protest, the disappointment among the children who were merely there to enjoy the spectacle led her to a profound realization. Nisha learned that being morally right isn't enough; one must also consider the impact of their actions on others.

The conversation highlighted the power of empathy and strategic action in creating meaningful change. Nisha's experiences, particularly her confrontation with the military dictatorship in Burma, have underscored the need for empathetic and strategic activism. Through her work at Dream.org, she continues to utilize these lessons to address social justice issues and inspire others to do the same.

Nisha Anand is an Indian-American activist, mom of two teenagers, and a boundary-busting national leader for social and racial justice. Once a grassroots activist arrested in Burma for pro-democracy demonstrations, Nisha is known today as a leader in cultivating unlikely and unconventional partnerships to create change. As Dream.Org's CEO, Nisha guides a team of storytellers, organizers, and policy experts working on some of society's toughest problems to create a better future for all.
