Codependency: The Day She Stopped Saving Everyone Else13 Jan 202601:02:56

In this episode of The Life Shift, we explore a pivotal life shift and the before and after moments that shaped Katie Grimes’ journey toward self-awareness, healing old patterns, and learning to trust herself again.

There are moments in life when you look around and realize you have been carrying the weight of everyone else’s expectations. Maybe you know that feeling. The quiet pressure to keep it all together. The fear that if you slow down even for a second, everything you have been outrunning will finally catch up.

Katie Grimes knows that place well. She grew up trying to earn belonging, trying to stay safe in a home shaped by addiction, fear, and silence. For years, she filled her life with noise and motion and relationships that echoed her earliest wounds. But somewhere inside the chaos, something steady began to rise. A small voice that said it was time to stop pretending and start healing. That voice became her line in the sand moment.

This conversation holds all of that tenderness. The grief she carried. The patterns she had to unlearn. The deep self-awareness she fought for. And the peace she has found in finally listening to herself. I hope that as you hear Katie’s story, you feel a soft reminder that you are not alone in the places that feel messy or unfinished.

What You’ll Hear
  1. The loneliness that follows a childhood shaped by addiction and fear
  2. How early abandonment patterns echo in adult relationships
  3. The breaking point that forced Katie to face her own truth
  4. The long, slow climb into recovery and self-awareness
  5. How faith, stillness, and support helped her rebuild
  6. The quiet strength she carries now as she chooses a different life

Learning to Trust Yourself Again | Bonus11 Jan 202600:05:03

This episode is part of The Things We Carry, a solo series shaped by the themes that keep showing up after more than two hundred conversations on The Life Shift.

Today I am talking about self trust and what it means to rebuild it after years of doubt, shame, or fear. Trusting yourself is not a single moment. It grows slowly through messy progress, small choices, and the courage to keep showing up even when you feel uncertain.

In this reflection, I talk about the back-and-forth nature of healing, the quiet bravery it takes to listen to your own voice, and the way small wins can slowly rewrite the stories you once believed about yourself. Self trust is not perfect confidence. It is the willingness to face your own feelings, try something new, set a boundary, or simply stay with yourself when things feel hard.

If you are in a season where trusting yourself feels out of reach, I hope this episode gives you some gentleness. You do not have to be fully healed to begin. You do not have to silence every doubt. You can start small. You can take one step. You can remember that the younger version of you deserved care, and the current version of you does too. You have always been enough.

Learning to Be Softer With Yourself | Bonus14 Dec 202500:04:51

This episode is part of The Things We Carry, a solo series shaped by the themes that stay with me after the conversations on The Life Shift.

Today I am talking about how hard we can be on ourselves and what it means to slowly learn gentleness. So many of us move through life with old shame, perfectionism, or fear tucked inside. We push ourselves to be better, to get everything right, or to carry more than we were ever meant to hold.

In this reflection, I talk about the critical voice we learn as kids, the pressure to be perfect, and the way self-compassion feels like a muscle we have to practice again and again. Healing is not a straight line. Some days you feel softer. Some days you slip back into old patterns. The important part is noticing the shift and remembering that you deserve the same care you give to everyone else.

If you have been carrying shame, harshness, or impossible expectations, I hope this episode helps you take one gentler breath. You do not have to earn kindness. You are allowed to give it to yourself, right here, exactly as you are.

An Episode a Day Keeps the [fill in the blank] Away? – Bonus with Angela Hollowell17 Mar 202501:09:07

In this bonus episode of The Life Shift Podcast, I sit down with Angela Hollowell for an honest and inspiring conversation about the challenges and growth that come with creative endeavors. Angela and I reflect on our experiences tackling a 30-day daily podcasting challenge, sharing lessons on vulnerability and authenticity, and redefining success in the creator economy. We also dive into the emotional impact of pushing creative boundaries and balancing personal storytelling with professional goals. This episode is a candid exploration of what it means to embrace the creative process fully, and I can’t wait for you to hear it.

Takeaways:

  1. Creative Challenges Push Us to Grow: Taking on a daily podcasting challenge helped both Angela and me step outside our comfort zones, embrace imperfection, and experiment with new formats.
  2. Authenticity and Vulnerability Build Deeper Connections: We explore how being open and intentional creates meaningful bonds with audiences and personal fulfillment as creators.
  3. Success Is Personal and Not Defined by Numbers: Angela and I reflect on how true success comes from aligning creative work with individual goals, not industry metrics.

Creative Challenges Push Us to Grow

Angela and I took on a 30-day daily podcasting challenge, which was as daunting as it sounds. For Angela, it was a chance to experiment with new formats and bridge the gap between her podcast and newsletter. It was an opportunity to share more of myself and push through the discomfort of imperfection. The challenge reminded us that growth often happens when we step outside our comfort zones, even if the process sometimes feels overwhelming. By the end, we both gained a deeper understanding of our creative potential and how to navigate intense commitments.

Authenticity and Vulnerability Build Deeper Connections

Throughout our conversation, Angela and I emphasized the importance of showing up authentically and being vulnerable. Angela shared how podcasting has allowed her to connect with her audience in new and meaningful ways. Similarly, I reflected on how my podcast creates a space for guests to open up and share personal stories. We both agreed that intentionality and authenticity are key to building genuine connections with listeners and finding joy and purpose in our creative work.

Success Is Personal and Not Defined by Numbers

One of the most valuable lessons we unpacked was that success in podcasting—or any creative endeavor – is deeply personal. Angela and I discussed how the pressure to meet external metrics, like downloads or sponsorships, can overshadow the real purpose of creating. Instead, we’ve both focused on defining success in ways that align with our values. For Angela, that’s about balancing personal storytelling with professional goals. It’s about creating a space where human stories can inspire connection and understanding.

About Angela Hollowell

Angela Hollowell is a creator, podcaster, and advocate for authenticity in the creator economy. Her thoughtful approach to bridging storytelling platforms and experimenting with creative formats has resonated with audiences and creators alike. Angela’s work exemplifies the beauty of vulnerability, intentionality, and creative exploration.

Identity: Walking Away From the Life You Dreamed Of09 Dec 202500:54:21

What happens when the spotlight fades, and you’re left with silence?

Seth Stewart spent years performing on the world’s biggest stages — from Hamilton and In the Heights to touring with Madonna. But at the height of success, something inside him started calling for more. That quiet pull led him away from bright lights and applause, and into the wilderness where he began listening to his own spirit for the first time.

In this conversation, Seth opens up about what it takes to walk away from a dream, why stillness can be louder than any stage, and how rediscovering our connection to nature can help us find our way back to ourselves.

You’ll hear about:

  1. How leaving Broadway became Seth’s most honest act of creation
  2. What living off-grid taught him about trust, unity, and peace
  3. Why listening to your inner voice might be the bravest thing you ever do

If you’ve ever felt called to change direction, this episode is a reminder that there’s life beyond what others expect — and that following your vision is a form of truth.

Learning to Live With Grief | Bonus07 Dec 202500:04:25

This episode is part of The Things We Carry, a solo series built around the themes that stay with me after the conversations on The Life Shift.

Today, I am talking about grief and the way it takes shape inside a life. Grief is not something you finish. It is something living and moving, something that changes as you change. Losing my mom, my grandmother, and Mikey shaped the way I understand grief long before I ever sat with a guest and heard their story.

In this reflection, I talk about how grief shifts from sharp to distant, how it can still surprise you years later, and how it never follows a straight line. Grief is not linear or predictable. It moves like waves, shadows, seasons. Sometimes it takes up the whole room. Sometimes it sits quietly in the corner. It is still a part of you either way.

If you are carrying a loss, I hope this episode gives you a softer place to land. You do not need to rush your way through it or pretend you are fine. Grief is not a problem to fix. It is part of who you are and part of being human. You are allowed to feel it, honor it, and keep moving with one small step at a time.

Addiction and Grief: The Long Way Back to Feeling02 Dec 202500:57:25

Sometimes grief arrives before we are old enough to understand it. It lands in the middle of everything familiar and quietly rewrites the map of who we become. Years can pass before we realize how much of ourselves is still standing in that same frozen place.

In this conversation, Kristina Amelong shares what it means to finally face what she could not name as a teenager. After losing her younger brother in a sudden accident, she spent decades searching for ways to numb the ache. What began as survival slowly became a lifelong practice of returning to herself — through healing, sobriety, and the simple act of telling the truth.

This is a story about finding connection after silence. About discovering that grief can open doors as easily as it closes them. And about the power of one question to bring the past back into the light.

What You’ll Hear:

  1. The day everything changed and the silence that followed
  2. How addiction became both a shield and a signal for help
  3. The stranger’s question that opened the path to healing
  4. What it means to reconnect with people frozen in the same grief
  5. The sacredness of tears and the wisdom they hold
  6. Finding peace through storytelling and self-acceptance

Day 23: Answering Random Questions – 30 days, 30 episodes24 Nov 202400:09:11

Today, I dive into a fun and spontaneous format by using random question generators to spark some interesting responses (or not).

It’s a lighthearted exploration that reveals a bit about my personality, including my aversion to board games and my thoughts on potential witness protection names.

I also reflect on my recent experience as a guest on another podcast, which inspired this episode's playful approach.

Day 22: Wicked: Worth the Hype – 30 days, 30 episodes23 Nov 202400:07:44

Today, I discuss the much-anticipated movie adaptation of Wicked, which has finally arrived after years of development. As a long-time fan of the Broadway show, I am excited about the performances, particularly those of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who truly brought their characters to life.

The movie runs for 2 hours and 45 minutes, and I found myself completely engaged throughout, not once feeling the urge to check out (or run to the restroom). Visually stunning and rich in storytelling, it captures the original work's essence while introducing new elements that enhance the narrative.

Go see it and let me know what you think!

Day 21: Finding Light in Holiday Memories – 30 days, 30 episodes22 Nov 202400:10:50

Today, I dive into the topic of holidays and the various traditions that shape our experiences. As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, I reflect on how my relationship with these celebrations has evolved over the years, especially in light of personal losses and changes. I share memories of cherished moments spent with my grandmother and the unique traditions we created together, from late-night gift unwrapping to family dinners at Olive Garden. However, I also acknowledge how the absence of loved ones can alter the feeling of these festive times. Ultimately, I encourage everyone to embrace what brings them joy during the holidays, whether that's continuing old traditions or creating new ones, and to remember that it's okay to feel a mix of emotions during this season.

Takeaways:

  1. Holidays can evoke mixed feelings, reminding us of both joy and loss in life.
  2. Creating new traditions can help us adapt and find joy in holiday celebrations.
  3. The importance of chosen family can be as significant as blood relatives during holidays.
  4. Everyone has different attachments to holidays, shaped by personal experiences and memories.
  5. Grief can change how we perceive and celebrate holidays, often leading to new customs.
  6. Reflecting on past memories helps us appreciate present experiences, especially during festive times.

When Burnout Starts to Break You Open | Bonus30 Nov 202500:04:45

This episode is part of The Things We Carry, a short solo series shaped by the themes that stay with me after the conversations on The Life Shift.

Today I am talking about burnout and the deeper exhaustion that grows slowly over time. The kind that shows up when you have spent years pushing through life, trying to be enough, and holding more than you were ever meant to carry alone.

In this reflection, I explore what burnout really feels like, why so many of us miss the early signs, and how your body eventually tells the truth, no matter how hard you try to keep going. Burnout is not a personal failure. It is a signal. A quiet invitation to look closely at your life, your pace, and the patterns you have been living inside without even noticing.

If you are overwhelmed, drained, or moving through a season where rest feels impossible, this episode offers a softer place to land. You do not need to have it all figured out. You only need to notice what is shifting inside you and take one small step toward something gentler.

That can be enough for today.

Day 17: My First Ambulance Ride – 30 days, 30 episodes18 Nov 202400:11:35

Day 17 offers a reflection on the personal health challenges I've encountered, highlighting the importance of staying hydrated and the unexpected situations that can arise from routine health checks.

I've had a couple of visits to the emergency room and urgent care, including one memorable incident during a blood draw that resulted in me fainting and needing an ambulance. While those moments were certainly uncomfortable, I’m thankful that I’ve avoided serious injuries as an adult.

Today, I want to explore something I'm not very good at but wish I could excel in: singing. Day 15: What Are You Afraid Of? - 30 days, 30 episodes16 Nov 202400:10:17

Today, I want to share some of my silly fears - from a tiny snake that startled me in my backyard to my irrational fear of heights.

While I know these fears may seem trivial, they hold a certain power over me that I can’t quite shake off. I also touch on the strange discomfort I feel when faced with annoying noises, a fear that’s fear-adjacent.

What are some of your silly fears?
