#359 What is the Best Way to Learn English?14 Jan 202600:52:13

The question I get asked most often these days is "How can I learn English?" and "What's the best way to learn?"

It's clearly a topic that people want to hear about, so my goal today is to finally answer that big question once and for all.

I'll be giving advice to people who know some English, but don't know how to make it a daily practice. And also advice for learners who have been studying for a while, but feel like they don't have a clear aim and are not seeing fast improvements.

I'll talk about questions to ask yourself before getting started, steps you need to take to see improvements in your English learning, and finally, 11 questions to ask if you are studying but not improving as fast as you'd like.

#358 How to Make Your Trip a Disaster07 Jan 202600:28:23

I'm talking to you from the beaches of Okinawa, Japan, and bringing you an outside episode today. Click the link below if you'd like to watch the video version on YouTube.

It's a bit of a chatty episode, but my main topic is Travel Hot Takes. A hot take is a controversial opinion that many people will disagree with, and today I list some of my biggest ones. I'm sure I'm going to anger a few people with these today.

#349 Cycling the Shimanami Kaido (Casual English Chat)05 Nov 202500:52:37

I just came back from a trip to Japan where I cycled the 80km Shimanami Kaido trail that connects two of the main islands by a group of small islands and bridges. It was a beautiful experience, and in this episode I share an overview of the trip.

You'll hear some funny stories and mistakes, as well as some reflections on language learning and using it in the country while travelling.

It's more of a casual episode, but I hope you like this style.

#259 Fixing Your Relationship Problems14 Feb 202400:30:25

Since this episode falls on Valentine's Day, let's discuss the topic of Love and Relationships.

I'll be basing this episode around a group class I taught before where we discuss some questions related to relationships, such as having a long and happy marriage, and how to break up with someone.

I also have the help of Chat GPT who gives some brilliant advice for all relationships out there. There will also be a few phrases you can use to talk about relationships . I'm sure at least one will be new for you.

#258 I Made Very Big Mistakes07 Feb 202400:38:01

Just a few days into 2024, I already made 2 very big and expensive mistakes.

In this episode, I share what happened and exactly why I made these mistakes, and then I talk about some possible lessons that I should learn from these mistakes.

I also spend a bit more time discussing the importance of making mistakes and the right mindset to have when it comes to mistakes in life and in language learning too.

#257 How to Live a Long Life (Blue Zones)31 Jan 202400:36:00

In this episode, we're taking a deep dive into Blue Zones - 5 areas around the world where people live a long time with great health.

I'll be sharing my uneducated views on why this might be, but also looking at the Power 9 - 9 reasons why researchers believe life expectancy is so long in these places.

For those of you who want to learn some new English along the way, I'll also be trying my best to include some dependant prepositions and their phrases too. I'll explain more about this in the episode.

Don't forget to join in the conversation on the show notes page below.

#256 Spending 10 Days in Silence - Stories with Bree Aesie24 Jan 202400:50:08

Bree Aesie from Into The Stories Podcast joins us today for a conversation about meditation and stories. This was one of my favourite conversations yet, packed with lots of life lessons as well as English learning tips and motivation.

Since Bree's podcast is all about looking at stories, we start by turning the tables on Bree and I ask her to share a meaningful story for her. We talk about her 10-day silent meditation retreat in Thailand and some of the difficulties and lessons from that experience.

We delve into topics around meditation and mindfulness, and also why learning a language through stories is such a powerful and effective method.

By the way, I also appeared on Bree's podcast! You can listen to our episode here where I talk about a challenging and personal experience in my 20s.

#255 The Secret to Natural British English (Linking!)17 Jan 202400:27:59

Textbook English is different from spoken English, and a big part of this comes down to pronunciation and how things are said in real conversations.

You may understand English learner material easily, but then really struggle when it comes to watching TV or movies. What I discuss in this episode may be the reason why.

This is the first part of a series I’m going to do on pronunciation, and this episode will be about something called Linking.

Linking is when a consonant sound connects from the end of one word to the beginning of the next word. Listen to find out more!

I answer listener questions on all sorts of topics - ranging from British culture to the fairness of life! And of course, English language questions too.

It was a fun episode and you all gave great questions.  I always enjoy these episodes because they feel a bit more casual and laid-back compared to the usual ones.

#253 Use Conjunctions to Debate in English03 Jan 202400:23:54

Let's look at some conjunctions (also known as connectives) to help improve your conversation and debating skills in English.

Conjunctions are an effective way to make your sentences more complex and sound much more natural - rather than simply using a string of short, simple sentences. We'll also be looking at more phrases, such as adverbs.

In this episode, I share them in a natural way while sharing my own opinions on some controversial and interesting debate topics. Can you share your own views on the topics using these conjunctions in the comments on the show notes page below?

#252 Reflecting on 2023, Planning for 202427 Dec 202300:45:25

Welcome back to one of my favourite episodes of the year - one filled with reflections and goal-setting at the end of the year.

I love this time of year because it's a natural rest point for thinking about how the previous year has gone, and what we'd like to change going forward.

It's a great time to think about your goals and progress with your English learning, but also other areas too and consider what you want to get out of the next year, and your life!

Join me in a slightly longer episode as we explore the topics of Successes and Struggles from the previous year, as well as different goals and plans for the next year.

Gregory Diehl is an English teacher and author of the new book: Our Global Lingua Franca: An Educator’s Guide to Spreading English Where EFL Doesn’t Work.

It's a fascinating book looking at Gregory's experience teaching in many countries all around the world from Thailand to Iran, and we talk about this extensively in this episode.

We talk about why English is so important to learn, Gregory's bad teaching experiences,  the problems with school and teaching English, getting immersion, video games, and how to develop an accent.

#250 Answer These Mixed Conditional Questions13 Dec 202300:24:56

Let's learn to use hypothetical situations with confidence in this episode on Mixed Conditionals. It's been a long-time suggestion from listeners, and I've finally decided to get to it.

I cover some different types of conditional structures in a casual way, and ask you questions to think about making your own sentences.

I hope you find this episode useful, and perhaps more importantly, fun!

#348 Sharing My Shower Thoughts29 Oct 202500:45:45

Shower thoughts are basically deep thoughts that tend to come to us when we're in the shower, or at other times in the day free from distractions.

In this episode, I go through a few funny thoughts, and a few deep and philosophical ones I've gathered and find interesting to think about. Hopefully you'll enjoy hearing them too!

Make sure to listen carefully to the vocabulary I mention throughout the episode. The full list of new words will be available on the website for members.

#248 I Tracked My Language Learning for 2 Months29 Nov 202300:36:48

Over the past few months, I've been meticulously tracking my language learning process for Japanese, Thai, and Chinese Mandarin on a Google Sheets doc.

In this episode, I discuss the results of this data and we look together at the graphs that represent my study time. There are some really interesting patterns and trends that I can learn from, and I have several conclusions that shocked me.

I had no idea what mistakes I was making before tracking my time!

I am also sharing the template for you to use too! Click the link below to get this Google Sheet for yourself.

#246 Easy Stories in English (Ariel Goodbody)15 Nov 202300:24:42

I am a big fan of reading for the purpose of learning a language as well, of course as listening, which is why I make podcasts. If you want to improve both of your listening and reading as well as your vocabulary, then this should be a good resource for you today.

In today’s episode, Ariel Goodbody will tell you a story, but pre-teach some of the harder vocabulary first. This is a crosspost episode where Ariel shared one of my episodes on their podcast, and I am sharing a story I enjoyed from Ariel's podcast.

It's something a little different, so I hope you enjoy it! Connect with Ariel or me below.

#245 The Ultimate Guide to IELTS Speaking08 Nov 202300:39:10

In this episode, I will be talking about the IELTS Speaking exam.

I know the IELTS exam isn't going to be relevant for everyone, although I always like to mention that preparing for the exam can also be great practice for English in a general sense. I'm sure those who have taken the exam before will agree that their English improved during the process. So even if you're not taking the exam, I really hope this episode will be useful for you in some way.

Since the beginning of this podcast, one of my main reasons, for making content was based on listener questions. I realised I would get the same questions again and again, and rather than trying to write out messages to reply to each one. I thought it would be much better for both me and the person asking the question if I could put all of my advice into one episode.

So the goal of this episode is to make the ultimate guide to IELTS speaking.

#244 The Link Between Exercise and Language Learning01 Nov 202300:24:44

Over the years doing this podcast, the topic of exercise seems to have come up a lot when making comparisons to language learning, so I thought it was about time I made an episode where I talk all about it.

In this episode, I talk about exercise and some of the benefits, teach you some useful expressions, and make some links on how exercise and language learning are similar and benefit you in the same ways.

#243 Should You Learn from Non-Native Speakers?25 Oct 202300:28:21

I get comments occasionally from people who say “I want to be like a native speaker” and “I don’t want to learn from non-native speakers.

In this episode, I'll argue the benefits of learning from non-native speakers as well as natives, and not closing yourself off from learning. The main thesis here is to stay open-minded in language learning and I explore some reasons why.

I cover some ways in which non-native speakers might be preferable to native speakers, and even when they're not, the things you can learn from them.

I hope you find this episode valuable. As always, you can share your thoughts on the show notes page below.

In this episode, I have a great and casual chat with Zhifei from Xiaogua Chinese about language learning, using flashcards, the best mindset for learners, getting a good English accent, and much more!

We also talk about my own Chinese learning methods and share ideas on the best way to learn two languages at once.

There's a lot of useful information in this long episode, and I hope you find it useful listening practice for your English too.

#240 Biggest Lessons from Moving Abroad04 Oct 202300:40:12

I’ve been living in Bangkok, Thailand since the beginning of August, so it’s been over 2 months now. This is the longest I’ve spent in one place outside of my home country before. One of our group class students requested an episode sharing my thoughts and experiences after moving here, and I decided to give it a go.

In this episode, I’ll be talking about what’s changed here and some big differences I’ve noticed between the UK and Thailand. I’ll be sharing the good and the bad, things I miss and things I prefer here. I’ll also be talking about moving abroad and relocating more generally and will mention some useful vocabulary related to this topic.

Memory is something we've covered a few times on the podcast before, but it's always worth coming back to with more ideas and tips.

In this episode, I share advice on how you can stop forgetting English vocabulary, 2 methods of learning new vocabulary that suit all types of learners and personality types, expressions related to memory and forgetting, and at the end I give some advice on general memory and forgetfulness.

I think there's a lot of value packed into this episode so listen carefully and I'm sure you'll take away something valuable.

Cara Leopold (Leo Listening) joins me once again on the podcast to discuss the benefits of learning English in groups with her experience teaching group classes based around movies, as well as some good movies and TV series she likes to use to practice and teach English.

If you've caught this episode in 2023, Cara is relaunching her Movie Club course. You can try it out for one week in September to see if you like it. We talk more about this in the episode too

Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast237

#236 Adding 'Up' to Verbs (Part 2)06 Sep 202300:28:06

In this episode, we'll be talking about some patterns you can remember when adding UP to verbs.

Here are some examples: cloud up, clear up, finish up, drink up, break up

One of the Level Up Members recently asked about the difficult part of phrasal verbs where we add ‘up’ to a verb and why we do this. I decided to make an entire episode about it because it’s not an easy thing to get your head around. Part 1 was Episode 224.

I decided to stop the episode halfway because 1 hour of listing phrasal verbs might be a tad boring. So let's finish up the patterns in today's episode.

I will add a complete lesson on Level Up English with a quiz and subtitles to help you understand. If you want to access this as well as join a global learner community to get access to all transcripts, group lessons, and many more courses.

#235 Learn English Fast with Comprehensible Input30 Aug 202300:32:02

I had a great audio question sent in today about learning with comprehensible input. So in this episode, I cover some of the ideas behind the comprehensible input method, and then explore the input hypothesis from Stephen Krashen and how these ideas might benefit your language learning methods.

As always, keep in mind we are all different and learn in different ways, but I think a lot of these points will be relevant to most of you. Perhaps you can take something away today that you can implement (add) into your own study routine.

#233 Don't Take Yourself So Seriously16 Aug 202300:30:22

On the private podcast last week, I chatted a bit about my experience in China and then ended on the idea of the benefit of being silly in your language learning. I thought it was a really interesting and potentially useful topic for people to hear, so I decided to turn it into a public podcast episode too.

In this episode, I’ll be talking about reasons why you shouldn’t take yourself too seriously, and how inserting more silliness into your life can benefit you - both generally and to help your English learning.

#231 Don't Call Me 'Dear'02 Aug 202300:20:41

I'll cover the ways in which we use this word and why you might not want to say it to strangers.

This is a re-share of a video I posted on the English with Michael YouTube channel, so thanks for your patience with me during this busy time!

#346 Learn English with Proverbs15 Oct 202500:40:39

"The more you know, the more you realise you don't know"

This is an example of a well-known proverb (that is so true for language learning too, by the way) and in this episode, we'll be looking at several proverbs, quotes, maxims, and aphorisms that contain some wisdom or rule for living a better life.

We'll be learning a few key terms and also exploring the vocabulary within each proverb, while exploring the meaning and wisdom behind each one.

#229 The History of English with Kevin Stroud19 Jul 202300:45:30
Kevin Stroud from the History of English Podcast joins me for a fascinating discussion and dive into... well, the history of English!

In this episode, we talk about a variety of things, including:

  • Why TH doesn't have its own letter
  • In what part of England the language was standardised?
  • When did the first dictionaries come
  • Why there are so many French words in English
  • Why we have so many silent letters
  • Why we have different words for animals and meat (pig, pork)
  • Where English surnames come from
  • And more!
Don't miss this one! If you have any trouble understanding some of the difficult terms in this episode, the YouTube video version will have some definitions on screen. The Member's Transcript will help even more.

#228 English Vocabulary for Getting Sick12 Jul 202300:31:12

This week I’m beginning to come down with a cold. I can feel my throat getting hoarse and it hurts to swallow, and I probably don’t have much time before I’ll be unable to record a podcast episode, so let’s get this done quickly!

Getting sick is something we all have to deal with at some point, so although it’s not the cheeriest of topics, it’s an important one to cover since there are so many great expressions we can use to talk about this. I’ll be covering a lot of those today as well as tips on how to treat a cold.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Avoiding getting sick
  • Symptoms of illness
  • Treating an illness
  • And my anger at the person who made me sick!

#227 Do Phrasal Verbs Need Prepositions?05 Jul 202300:28:26

I had a listener question about Phrasal Verbs and why some of them use prepositions even though the meaning seems to be the same without them.

Can we say "Check it" and "Check it out"? What's the difference?

I break down this question in detail and also talk about the difference between literal and idiomatic phrasal verbs.

I hope you learn a lot today in this useful and information-packed episode.

#224 Eat or Eat Up? (Why We Always Say 'UP')14 Jun 202300:39:06

I got a question about adding "UP" to certain verbs and this learner wanted to know more. As I did more research, I was plunged into a rabbit hole of research and it turned out to be much more complicated than I first realised! I decided to try to tackle this topic in a podcast episode.

Because there's a lot to talk about, this is just part 1. If you like this episode, let me know! If this one goes well, I'll do my best to make a part 2.

In this episode, I talk about what a phrasal verb is, how 'up' can change the meaning of verbs, and 4 different grammar patterns you can learn to help you understand these words.

#223 How to Get Natural English with Parallelism07 Jun 202300:33:47

I see a lot of writing mistakes with learners struggling with parallel structures, or parallelism. This is where features in a sentence have to follow the same grammatical patterns to sound natural.

It may sound a bit confusing, but honestly, it's fairly simple once you understand the main idea.

In this episode, I go through 7 examples of how to sound more natural with this grammar rule as I talk about some of my favourite travel memories. I encourage you to respond and do the same!

#222 What do British People Think of the Monarchy?31 May 202300:25:08

With the recent coronation of King Charles in the UK, people might be wondering why I haven't posted any content related to the royal family.

Well, in this episode I'm going to be exploring the British opinion on the monarchy (based on Reddit posts) and sharing my own opinion at the end too.

We explore a lot of vocabulary and I try my best to cover both sides of the argument, from those who think the monarchy is important to our culture, to those who want to see it abolished.

What do you think? Join the conversation by tapping below.

Are you well-rested and ready to begin today's episode?

Sleep is a vital part of human health and I explore this a bit in today's episode. I talk about the importance of sleep and how it related to learning and the mind. I explore the idea of comparing sleep to study time. Is it better to study more or sleep more?

I share my thoughts and provide some statistics in today's episode, and as always, I'd love to hear your thoughts too! Leave your comments in the show notes below.

#345 How to Make Your English Sentences Longer08 Oct 202500:33:42

Sentences that are too short and simple is an issue that all language learners face. We can say what we want, but we don't sound natural because all of our sentences sound like children.

In this episode, we're going to practise extending sentences and making more natural phrases using Relative Clauses. I spend just 5 minutes reviewing the grammar, and then delve into a casual chat where I share my answers to a few questions using these patterns, and I invite you to do the same.
