| 106 - How This Law Firm Partner Went from Exhausted Technician to Thriving Business Owner | 11 Feb 2025 | 00:35:31 | |
Rob started his first firm shortly after he qualified when he was 28 and, as one of his then partners commented, they “had all the confidence of ignorance”. In 2006, Rob set up the first iteration of the Atkins Dellow business with Graham Atkins, his very good friend from law school. They operated under the umbrella of Atkins, with Graham offering boutique media and libel services and Rob focusing on company, commercial and property. That business has evolved into Atkins Dellow LLP, now a fairly ‘full service’ firm with 78 team members, five offices across Suffolk and one in South Kensington. The firm has nearly quadrupled in size in the last four years. In this episode, we speak about how Robert had got to a point where, in his fifties, he was a successful but exhausted partner of his firm and how he finally removed himself from most operations and now enjoys significant profits while having a life at the same time! Rob read many books about business management and personal development. He understood many theories but finds it frustrating that it’s taken him to this point as a law firm partner to implement some of the crucial tenets of being a business owner. He made the classic mistake of creating a job for himself, working in the business, with many clients as his bosses. He advises finding someone else to manage the business for you, as it should be managed. Also, to gain clarity of purpose and goals, differentiation, being adequately funded, and understanding management and delegation is crucial. He also advises getting the external perspective of a coach or mentor and being prepared to be held accountable. | 107 - The 3 Mistakes Law Firms Make that Can Destroy Their Business & How to Avoid Them | 18 Feb 2025 | 00:36:30 | |
In this episode Karen takes us through the 3 mistakes that law firms make that can destroy their business, and cause them to lose fees, or cost them income and how to avoid them. Karen has over 30 years’ experience of defending claims against professionals, primarily solicitors, accountants and tax advisors. She became frustrated by the fact that professional negligence claims caused significant devastation and harm to the 3 ‘stakeholders’- the firm, the staff and the firm’s clients, and that her role as a defence lawyer gave her an insight into the root cause of those claims, but did not enable her to prevent them recurring. In 2020 (but pre-covid) she set up Karen Eckstein Ltd, to focus on the prevention of claims, to use her expertise and experience to help firms have healthier, happier and long lived relationships with their clients, and be more profitable as a result. Karen Eckstein Ltd has grown, with the recruitment of long time mentee Polly Coram (both Karen and Polly are Cert IRM as well as solicitors) and recently was recognised for its work in this arena at the Yorkshire legal awards. You can contact Karen to find out about her Risk Insight. A simple and cost effective way of reviewing your firm’s risk – which looks at 10 key risks that could derail your business- and provides you with a one page report with key prioritised recommendations – it only takes 90 minutes of your time. My guest on this episode is Natalie Foster, Founder and CEO of Inspire Legal Group, which is an ABS structure law firm leading the way on building their own tech stack to improve day-to-day access to justice for clients, taking the pain out of property transactions and supporting disabled clients with bespoke solutions to facilitate just outcomes. Inspire Legal was born in lockdown 5 years ago in a bedroom on a laptop, and the question was, "If the world never opens up again, how are we going to practice law?" and to this day, this is the question Natalie and her team keep answering to make access and convenience to law their focus. With 400% growth in work this year alone, it's clear this is a priority for clients too. Natalie is also the founder of Legally Fond, a consultancy that supports other legal leaders in the change space, where she practically supports them in leading change management whilst minimising business interruption. Today, what we're covering is whether a certificate or resilience matters most.
