417. 5 Must-Have Law Firm Tools
Saison 2 · Épisode 417
vendredi 27 septembre 2024 • Durée 20:37
In this episode, Sam and Neil dive into five essential tools you need to streamline your law firm’s operations and boost efficiency.
Tools like Loom, Slack, Google Docs, and OnePassword can transform communication, task management, and security, helping you optimize workflows and protect sensitive information.
They share actionable insights to help you delegate tasks effectively, secure your digital assets, and free yourself from the inefficiencies of email.
Key Takeaways from Sam and Neil:
1. Loom: Best Video Communication and Training Tool
Loom revolutionizes law firm training by enabling quick video recordings for onboarding, eliminating the need for in-person meetings.
This essential tool allows lawyers to create easily followed SOPs, saving time and enhancing client communication through personalized updates—all for just $8 a month.
2. Slack: The Central Hub for Team Communication
Slack organizes communication into channels for teams and cases, effectively reducing email clutter.
Its integration with tools like Google Drive and CRMs streamlines operations.
Additionally, two-factor authentication ensures the secure management of sensitive legal information.
3. Google Sheets: The Ultimate Tool for Data Management
Google Sheets is vital for tracking client data and case progress, offering quick analysis through features like pivot tables.
Its integration with Zapier and Google Apps Script enables automation, while dashboards support financial tracking and task management to keep teams aligned.
4. Todoist and Google Calendar: Mastering Task and Time Management
Todoist helps manage daily tasks, while Google Calendar facilitates scheduling, ensuring tasks are linked to specific time slots.
Their integration minimizes missed deadlines and simplifies delegation, enhancing overall team efficiency.
5. 1Password: Securing Sensitive Information
1Password provides secure password storage and sharing without revealing information to staff.
With two-factor authentication for added protection, it’s essential for managing sensitive data.
Additionally, it plays a crucial role in succession planning, ensuring that important information remains accessible during emergencies.
"Once you start using it, find out everything that tool can do. Don't be satisfied with using it for 10 percent of what it's capable of doing." — Neil Tyra
"Every tool is worth it if you use it. If you don't use it, it's not worth it." — Sam Mollaei

416. Bitcoin & The Future of Money
Saison 2 · Épisode 416
vendredi 20 septembre 2024 • Durée 34:04
Join Sam and Neil as they dive deep into Bitcoin, with Sam’s seven years of experience bringing valuable insights and practical takeaways for entrepreneurs and forward-thinking individuals.
Sam breaks down key concepts, while Neil asks the critical questions, making this essential listening for anyone curious about Bitcoin’s role in the future of finance
Key Takeaways from Sam and Neil:
1. Bitcoin is The Ultimate Savings Account
Bitcoin's decentralized system allows global transactions without banks, offering financial access and cost savings.
With a capped supply of 21 million coins, it acts as an inflation hedge, providing transparency, security, and financial independence amid rising national debts.
2. Bitcoin is the Ultimate Asset. Avoid Altcoins
Altcoins are volatile and risky, better for speculation than long-term investment.
Bitcoin’s proven halving cycle makes it the safest asset with consistent long-term growth.
Prioritize holding Bitcoin over investing in unpredictable altcoins.
3. The New Investment Strategy: Moving from Real Estate to Bitcoin
Bitcoin offers real estate benefits without taxes, maintenance, or seizure risks.
Wealthy individuals are shifting to Bitcoin, which has shown consistent profitability and is a superior inflation hedge.
4. Timing the Market vs. Time in the Market: The Long-Term Strategy
Despite its volatility, Bitcoin’s long-term trend is upward due to its limited supply and increasing demand.
Adopting a "Hold On for Dear Life" approach and practicing Dollar-Cost Averaging can maximize returns by emphasizing long-term growth over market timing.
5. Navigating the Risks and Opportunities of Bitcoin
Be aware of emotional triggers like Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and stay informed about regulations to manage risks.
With only 21 million Bitcoins available, holding some is crucial for future security, as the risk of holding none outweighs Bitcoin's volatility.
6. Best Sources
To avoid misinformation and scams, rely on reputable sources like InvestAnswers on YouTube and Patreon, and Fred Krueger on X.
Many platforms promote risky alternative cryptocurrencies or scams, so prioritize well-researched Bitcoin information.
"This has to be money that you intend to invest, and that you're not going to be looking to extract to pay next week's or next month's rent." — Neil Tyra
"When the government is spending more and more money and inflation is growing, you don't want to be holding on to dollars; you want to have hard assets like Bitcoin, real estate, and stocks." — Sam Mollaei

407. 5 Biggest Time Wasters Every Lawyer Must Avoid
Saison 2 · Épisode 407
vendredi 19 juillet 2024 • Durée 36:49
In this episode, Sam and Neil delve into transformative strategies for law firm owners, highlighting how to streamline client intake, enhance productivity, and manage client interactions more effectively.
You'll gain insights into optimizing client consultations, leveraging virtual assistants, and using tools to manage emails efficiently—all aimed at reducing burnout and boosting your firm's growth.
Tune in to learn proven strategies designed to make your practice more efficient and client-centric, ensuring sustainable growth and success.
Key Takeaways from Sam and Neil:
1. Signing Up Clients Yourself
Manually handling client sign-ups is inefficient and hampers scalability. As your client base grows, this process can become a bottleneck.
Delegating to virtual intake specialists streamlines it, allowing lawyers to focus on critical tasks and prevent burnout.
2. Constant Emailing
Constantly checking emails is distracting and stressful.
Use tools like Mixmax for email automation and set specific times to check emails to reduce this time trap and enable lawyers to focus on high-value activities.
3. That Meeting Could’ve Been an Email
Unstructured meetings waste time. Schedule them on specific days, limit to 30 minutes, and always have a clear agenda.
Selective invitations help control your schedule and maximize productivity.
4. Social Media Overusage
Excessive social media use distracts from productive work and reduces focus.
Unless used strategically for business, it detracts from productivity and well-being.
Limiting social media use is essential for maintaining focus.
5. Not Using Zapier for Repetitive Tasks
Not automating repetitive tasks wastes time.
Tools like Zapier can handle many tasks, boosting productivity and allowing lawyers to concentrate on critical work.
Embracing automation improves practice efficiency.
Other Ideas
Spending too much time on low-impact tasks is a major time waster. This includes perfectionism, manual document management, and micromanaging. Focusing on key tasks and delegating others boosts productivity.
"Multitasking is not a way to manage your time; it's actually more of a time suck than an enhancement to your efficiency." — Neil Tyra
"Sometimes it's good to be cutthroat with your own rules. If not, other people will make rules for you." — Sam Mollaei

317. Cracking the Code to Attracting Talent with Jonathan Merel
Épisode 317
lundi 16 mai 2022 • Durée 29:59
Today, my guest is Jonathan Merel. Jonathan owns a family law practice in the Chicago area that has experienced some pretty phenomenal growth as of late, now reaching 17 attorneys and support staff that are associated with those attorneys having started as a solo practitioner, and really grew as a law firm pretty quickly. One of the things we're going to spend a fair amount of time talking about is how to attract talent to your law firm, because one of the things that most people are complaining about these days is their inability to find qualified candidates for the jobs that they do have open. Jonathan seems to crack that code a little bit. I think there's something to be learned from this interview, and I hope you get something out of it.
In this episode, Neil and Jonathan discuss:
- Growing Jonathan’s firm from a solo firm to a firm of 17 attorneys.
- How to attract talent to your law firm.
- Creating a culture where people want to be.
- The onboarding and transition process.
Key Takeaways:
- Build your book of business from the beginning. You never know if you’re going to want to go on your own or how it can further help in your career even if you stay in big law.
- As you are learning how to be a lawyer, take note of what you do and don’t want your own practice to be like.
- A personal one-on-one in an interview is important. You wouldn’t invite them to interview if they weren’t a good attorney, you’re looking to see if they are a good fit for your firm’s culture.
- You need to take the time to focus on the business, not just in the business. That is how you are going to grow your firm and attract and retain the best talent.
"Marketing is not just about targeting clients, it's about targeting talent as well. I believe that by creating a good brand and a culture and an image, that will ultimately attract good talent." — Jonathan Merel

316. Investing Across Borders with Lauren Cohen
Épisode 316
lundi 9 mai 2022 • Durée 32:37
Today, my guest is Lauren Cohen. Lauren is an attorney originally from Canada, who now is located in South Florida, and licensed to practice law in two countries, which I think is pretty cool. She is the founder of a number of different businesses, all focusing around her primary mission - investing across borders. Her practice areas deal with all the different issues that people who are conducting business across borders have to deal with, whether it be immigration, finance, law, relocation services, business, commercial transactions, and more. Anything having to do or touching upon the transaction of business across international borders is something that Lauren and her team spent a lot of time helping their clients with. It's a niche practice area that is very broad. Seems to be a contradiction of terms, but I think that summarizes it pretty well.
In this episode, Neil and Lauren discuss:
- How Lauren fell into immigration law and created her full service company for immigrating to the US or Canada.
- The business of practicing law.
- Being a lawyer running a business versus being an entrepreneur who is not a lawyer.
- Removing yourself from the day to day running of the firm to build stronger procedures.
Key Takeaways:
- Unless you're working as a lawyer in a firm, where everything is handled for you, you’re going to have to learn to run a business.
- Through failure you find success. You don’t know what you don’t know and what you do know is less than you think.
- Collaboration and business relationships can change the game for your law firm.
- Being in touch and being available can be both a blessing and a curse in your firm.
"It's always about collaborating and building trusted relationships and knowing that you don't know everything. You need to be able to say and acknowledge that and bring in team members that complement what you do and can help you to build a stronger, scalable business." — Lauren Cohen

315. Keys to Productivity with Demir Bentley
Épisode 315
lundi 2 mai 2022 • Durée 44:02
Today, my guest is Demir Bentley, a productivity coach! Now, I am the poster child for someone who needs help in becoming more productive. I like to think of myself as productive, but my Achilles’ heel is planning. I am not a good planner. And that is where Demir really shines. This interview to me was personal and mind blowing. He has some really great ideas on how to take that giant leap, just one step at a time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
In this episode, Neil and Demir discuss:
- Demir’s journey from a background of burnout and overwhelm to being a productivity coach.
- Unique challenges the law industry has in regards to productivity.
- The necessary customizations of solutions and willingness to change.
- Planning your week to win your week and structuring it as a reward.
Key Takeaways:
- The biggest hangups in the legal community to becoming more productive are the billable hour and the this-is-how-it-is-isms.
- Leave everything you touch 1% better for just 3 months. And you will be better than you have been in years without realizing it.
- Making changes will take less time than you think it will - you just need to start.
- The smallest thing you can do to maximize your productivity is to plan your week every single week.
"If you keep working on the things that you're willing to work on, it's just a matter of time before you get the willingness to work on the things you weren't willing to work on." — Demir Bentley

314. Growing and Marketing Your Firm with Video with Dara Rosenbaum
Épisode 314
lundi 25 avril 2022 • Durée 37:28
Today, my guest is Dara Rosenbaum. Dara is one of the founding partners of a firm out of New York called Rosenbaum and Taylor, and they represent individuals and businesses on a variety of legal issues, including contract negotiations and business disputes and all kinds of things having to do with business owners and entrepreneurs and solopreneurs. She counsels and advises them on transactional matters as well, and represents them in litigation and lawsuits. Dara and I met on a video socials website, which is a platform run by a gentleman who was on earlier podcast ours, and she has her own video podcast that she has launched. I wanted to have her on today, and we discuss her journey through the practice of law, the legal space, and how she's become a business owner and a video marketing entrepreneur.
In this episode, Neil and Dara discuss:
- Dara’s evolution from law school to being a business law attorney.
- The early days of going out with a partner from a larger firm.
- Preparing to move from a large firm to your own practice.
- Growing your marketing and branding.
Key Takeaways:
- When going out on your own, there are resources out there to take some of the burden from you as a new owner.
- Utilizing a PEO service (such as NexFirm) can give you a good grounding as you are learning to go out on your own.
- As your firm grows and evolves, you will likely need to adjust how the firm is run and the resources you are using to run that firm.
- Step out of your comfort zone. You never know what you will come to love and how it will grow your business.
"We realized, probably much later than many other people, that you need to have an online presence, not just a website. People have to be able to see what you're doing, learn who you are, and find you in places that aren’t necessarily getting to your website somehow." — Dara Rosenbaum

313. Becoming Superbold with Fred Joyal
Épisode 313
lundi 18 avril 2022 • Durée 43:16
Today, my guest is Fred Joyal. Fred is a fascinating individual. His latest book Superbold: From Under Confident to Charismatic in 90 Days, teaches us a systemic way for anyone to radically increase their boldness and confidence to a remarkable level in a very short period of time. You're going to hear how he started out as a very shy person but pushed himself to become bolder. And, as a result, met some amazing people, started successful businesses, and has graduated to the point where he can speak to audiences of 5000 or more with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He's written two books on marketing and dabbled as a stand up and improv comedian. By his own account, he acted in a few bad movies and some excellent TV commercials and visited over 44 countries around the world. I'm sure you're gonna find this interview pretty interesting, particularly for those of us who might identify as introverts or are shy individuals in the legal practice and maybe want to make some adjustments or some changes there.
In this episode, Neil and Fred discuss:
- What it means to be Superbold (and how anybody can become Superbold regardless of their personality type).
- Fred’s transformation from wallflower to performer.
- Fred’s PRIDE method to becoming Superbold.
- Moving past perfection and into action with intent.
Key Takeaways:
- Shyness is a behavior, not a genetic thing. Stop telling yourself that you are shy.
- Start asking open ended questions, then don’t go into a long monologue when it is your turn to talk.
- Be interested, not interesting. Actively listen to everyone that you are communicating with.
- It is a choice to be embarrassed, it is a choice to be humiliated. 99% of the time bad things only happen because you think it was bad.
"It is also very important to understand something that bold people understand is that most people are not thinking about you anywhere near as much as you think. They are thinking about themselves. They go back to themselves very quickly." — Fred Joyal

312. Negotiating Your Own Professional Prenuptial Agreement with Jotham Stein
Épisode 312
lundi 11 avril 2022 • Durée 36:31
Today, my guest is Jotham Stein. Jotham is a principal of the Law Offices of Jotham Stein, located in California, and he has more than a couple of decades of experience representing entrepreneurs and C-Suite executives in a whole bunch of different types of companies. He also represents board members and investment bankers as well as less senior employees of all different sized companies. He has written a book called Negotiate Like a CEO, and it looks at how all employees can protect themselves with the lessons that he's learned from representing top entrepreneurs and executives, and how you can profit from it as well. I think it's particularly enlightening in terms of the legal space these days, with people hiring and firing and merging and acquiring. So I think it's something that we could all benefit from.
In this episode, Neil and Jotham discuss:
- Why Jotham wrote Negotiate Like a CEO and how it can help all lawyers.
- The purpose of a PIP (performance improvement plan) and how they are often used.
- What to look for in an offer letter or in a separation agreement.
- The importance of leverage in negotiation.
Key Takeaways:
- As the entrepreneurial space has grown and evolved, so too have the legal needs of those in the entrepreneurial space.
- The most important thing you should look for is how to protect yourself in employment in your offer letter. That includes having a severance agreement argued on day 1 if you do have room to negotiate.
- There may be a red flag (depending on context) if you get push back when you try to negotiate on your offer letter.
- Negotiating is the same regardless of what you are negotiating, whether it is a product or yourself as a person.
"It’s the concept to protect yourself, to read everything or get a good adviser to read everything, to negotiate with leverage, just like a CEO would negotiate with leverage." — Jotham Stein

311. Law Firm Lessons from Kobe Bryant with Henry Gereis
Épisode 311
lundi 4 avril 2022 • Durée 31:16
Today, my guest is Henry Gereis, and Henry is a criminal defense attorney near Bakersfield, CA who has an interesting journey, having transitioned from family law, ultimately into doing criminal defense work. It's an interesting story about how he attributes a lot of the success that he's had to the fact that he's a huge fan of Kobe Bryant's and learned a lot from Kobe and how Kobe approached his life in terms of being prepared and understanding all the nuances of what he was facing. Henry has taken that approach and applied it to his practice of law. It's a terrific homage to somebody who meant a lot to him and I think you can see it in what he does for his community.
In this episode, Neil and Henry discuss:
- Henry’s transition from being a family law attorney to being a criminal defense attorney.
- How Kobe Bryant affected Henry’s career path and life.
- Challenges of being a solo or small-firm practitioner.
- Helpful tools utilized in Henry’s law practice.
Key Takeaways:
- Every person deserves to be treated with respect and decorum, regardless of where they are from and their walk of life.
- If you are prepared to the best of your ability, there is no need to be nervous.
- You do not have to be great at everything. There are many other professionals that are out there to help you run your firm.
- With everything, break it down into its smallest components and take it one piece at a time.
"I like to think of branding as what we represent. I think that empathy, especially in a criminal defense setting, is the missing ingredient in the legal profession. And so we have a slogan, and registered it, it's Client-Centered Caring Council™. And that's what we stand for. That's what we do every day." — Henry Gereis
