Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga29 May 202401:13:19
Red State22 Mar 202301:34:25
We circle back in this bonus episode to more apocalyptic or apocalypse-adjacent content given the success of Knock at the Cabin and The Last of Us with a film that is unlike any other from its director: Red State. Wake Up Heavy's Mark Begley is subjected once again to a film that may define conventional genre labels but works in spite of that.

Starring Michael Parks as a Fred Phelps-type pastor, it follows his family as they wreck havoc on the small Midwestern town they occupy, culiminating in a Waco-like assault on their compound. John Goodman and Melissa Leo are along for the ride in a film that doesn't feel like Kevin Smith directed it, but we're glad he did.

Yellowbeard17 Mar 202301:24:12
We continue Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with another film whose reputation not only precedes it, but also is rightfully earned: Yellowbeard. Mondo Heather's Heather Drain and Dark Destination's Father Malone join the proceedings to determine how a movie with this many comedians can be this bracingly unfunny.

Starring a veritable who's who of '70s and '80s comedians, both American and British, it follows the titular Yellowbeard (Graham Chapman) who must use the treasure map tattooed on his son's head to find his lost treasure. It's a film where there isn't enough of the good parts, which is any time Graham Chapman is on-screen; weird the film is titled Yellowbeard eh?

KCxWUH: Knock at the Cabin (2023)17 Mar 202301:29:24
We take a trip to the old multiplex in this bonus episode with a look at M. Night Shyamalan's latest joint: a film adaptation of Paul Tremblay's Knock at the Cabin. Wake Up Heavy's Mark Begley programs the film and edits the episode on this very topical crossover that may send us down a rabbit hole or two...

Starring an ensemble cast, it follows a gay couple and their daughter who go on a retreat to a cabin in the woods only to have their peaceful retreat interrupted by Dave Bautista and his very intense group of followers who have a proposition: sacrifice one of yourselves willingly and save the world. Hilarity ensues!

Roman Polanski's Pirates08 Mar 202301:13:22
We kick off Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with a film so reviled, so totally unworthy of your time, it's kinda shocking that we talked for over an hour about it: Roman Polanski's Pirates. Film professor Spencer Parsons and Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard stop by to talk about possibly the worst film this humble movie podcast has ever covered.

Starring Walter Matthau, this bizarre little film is a take on the pirate adventure films of old with very little else in the way of plot, character development, or interesting diaglogue. As least its nice to look at., sort of.

Bonfire of the Vanities03 Mar 202301:01:06
We end Tom Hanks-uary with an adaptation of Tom Wolfe's seminal '80s classic that ended up being one of the biggest bombs of all time: Bonfire of the Vanities. Movie critic Dustin Rutledge stops by to talk all about Hanks, the bizarre Bruce Willis performance, and that opening shot.

Starring Hanks, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith, it follows Hanks as Sherman McCoy, a man at the center of a controversy that's as '80s as it gets. It's one of movies that is such an immense failure, it needs to be seen to be understood.

Forrest Gump03 Mar 202301:33:37
We near the end of Tom Hanks-uary with the film that features what will be shown at Tom Hanks' "In Memoriam": Forrest Gump. Wolf & Raisin's HP stops by to talk all about Hanks, his performance for the ages, and what it means that Bubba Gump Co is still open today.

Starring Hanks in a role for the ages, he plays the slow Forrest Gump, a man who is every American of a certain generation's wet dream, who finds himself at the epicenter of many of the 20th century's biggest American moments.

Volunteers01 Mar 202301:11:36
We continue Tom Hanks-uary with a film that features Hanks playing someone who's immensely unlikable: Volunteers. The Hollywood Outsider's Aaron Peterson stops by to talk all about Hanks, Candy, and everything else wrong with this strange little comedy.

Starring Hanks, John Candy, and Rita Wilson, the three join the Peace Corps and head to Thailand for fun, fellowship, and some light heroin smuggling. It's a weird premise and an even stranger film in execution.

Mazes & Monsters01 Mar 202301:22:54
We continue Tom Hanks-uary with an early entry into the Hanks filmography: Mazes & Monsters. Dark Destination's Father Malone picks the film and stops by to talk all including some choice line delivery from Hanks himself.

Starring Hanks, Chris Makepeace, and Wendy Crewson, the three play college students who are obsessed with a Dungeons & Dragons-esque game that soon takes over their entire lives. It sounds way more interesting than it is outside of Hanks having blood on his hands!

Big20 Feb 202301:24:24
We continue Tom Hanks-uary with an early entry into the actor's growing list of serious-leaning roles that show is ability to balance comedy and drama: Big. DC Titan's Richard Hatem picks the film and stops by to talk all about it including why it may be an entry into the "perfect film club".

Starring Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, John Heard, and Robert Loggia, it follows Hanks as a thirteen year old boy who wishes to be big, and gets his wish. Little does he realize what that will mean for him, his family, and the man he has become.

The 'Burbs08 Feb 202301:38:48
We kick off Tom Hanks-uary with an early entry into the beloved actor's career when he was known more for comedy and less for baiting all those Academy Award nominations playing real people: The 'Burbs. Mondo Heather's Heather Drain and Dark Destination's Father Malone stop by to talk all about what may be both of their favorite films in Hanks' expansive filmography.

Starring Hanks, Rick Ducommon, and Bruce Dern, the film follows the three suburban neighbors who live on cul-de-sac and are convinced their newest move-ins are up to no good and may have even murdered a fellow neighbor. It's a film that overcomes it's disappointingly upbeat ending to offer a truly interesting take on the idea of the suburban hellscape.

Mad Max Fury Road24 May 202401:12:59
We take a break from Mike White May with the fourth in a series of bonus episodes leading up to the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with a look at the latest entry in the series and a perfect film: Mad Max Fury Road. Midnight Viewing's Father Malone joins the episode to talk Immortan Joe, Charlize Theron, and the recasting of Mad Max.

Directed once again by George Miller and starring a recast Tom Hardy as Max, it's a high octane thrill-ride across the savaged wasteland of dystopian Austrailia. It's one of the most stunning pieces of practical filmmaking ever put to screen and a worthy entry into the "Perfect Film Club".

Pushpaka Vimana25 Jan 202301:03:44
We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with an Indian cinema film that doesn't require any translation whatsoever, the critically acclaimed silent film Pushpaka Vimana. DC Titan's Richard Hatem joins Chris to talk all about the film that doesn't do nearly as much with its niche premise as it could.

Starring Kamal Hassan once again, he plays a down on his luck graduate student, shades of Moondram Pirai, as he switches places with a businessman who happens to be staying a luxury hotel. This leads to series of unfortuntate events in the vein of After Hours or other "man about town" films that lead to our hero bumbling from one wild mishap to another.

Moondram Pirai18 Jan 202300:48:03
We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with a Tamil-language film that begs the question: if a man is interested in a woman with amnesia who thinks, talks, and sounds like a child, is he a creep? The Projection Booth's Mike White stops by to help answer that question and more with a look at 1982's Moondram Pirai.

Starring Kamal Hassan as the aforementioned man and Sridevi as the aforementioned woman, it's an interesting take on the romantic drama that pulls no punches and gives the characters exactly what they deserve, and then some. The film was remade the next year with mostly the same actors in Hindi but suffers subtitle issues on Prime Video version; we don't get it either.

The Menu13 Jan 202301:14:52
We take another break from Indian Cinema Month to check out a black comedy horror takedown of the haute-cuisine world of Alinea and Noma: The Menu. Taking place at Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant on an island, the film follows the staff and guests through a tasting menu unlike anything they've ever experienced. Know as little as possible going in and, if you're a fan of Chef's Table, your culinary itch is guaranteed to be scratched.

DC Titan's Richard Hatem and '80s TV Ladies Susan Lambert Hatem join Chris to talk about the film, the biting satire, and whether the film goes far enough with the concept.

PK12 Jan 202301:03:28
We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with a film that features Aamir Khan doing his best E.T. impersonation: PK. Starring the aforementioned Khan, he plays the titular PK who lands on Earth only to have the remote control that calls his spaceship stolen off his naked body. This sends PK on a journey to get home but also discover the true meaning of religion and what it means to be human.

Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard join Chris to talk about Aamir Khan, his childlike wonderment, and the naive take on religion the film ascribes to.

Skinamarink12 Jan 202301:06:18
We take a break from Indian Cinema Month to take a look at a lo-fi horror film that took 2022 social media by storm: Skinamarink. Focused on two children whose dad disappears on the same evening the doors and windows in their house suddenly vanish as well. It's one of the most exciting, unsettling, bizarre, obtuse, and atmospheric horror films of the last decade; the less you know going in, the better!

Critic Dustin Rutledge joins Chris to talk about the film, the '90s vibes, and some of the overt symbolism throughout.

Muthu06 Jan 202301:19:43
We kick off Indian Cinema Month this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with a look at a Tamil classic: Muthu. Starring superstar Rajnikanth as the titular Muthu, it follows him as he is tasked with babysitting his boss' fiancee which causes him to learn the truth about his entire life. It's a story that's Shakespearean in scope but also happens to feature Hong Kong-style action, musical numbers, and a chariot chase for the ages.

The Projection Booth's Mike White and Mondo Heather's Heather Drain join Chris to talk about Rajnikanth, his expansive career, and that wild chariot chase scene.

The Awakening05 Jan 202301:07:16
We end Universal Monsters Abroad, a month where we look at movies featuring the classic monsters that aren't made by Universal, with one of the most disappointing films ever watched for this podcast: The Awakening. Starring Charlton Heston as an obsessed Egyptologist who finds the tomb of a cursed ancient Egyptian queen that may be trying to come back to life. It sounds way more entertaining than it ends up being; it is genuinely one of the most infuriating, confusing films we've come across.

Flick Attack's Rod Lott joins Chris to talk all about the film, Charlton Heston's performance, and its connection to Remington Steele.

We near the end of Universal Monsters Abroad, a month where we look at movies featuring the classic monsters that aren't made by Universal, with a vampire film as offensive as it is unfunny, Love at First Bite. Starring George Hamilton as Dracula, he leaves Transylvania for the shores of New York City to find love, blood, and so much more. The laughs barely come if they come

Frankenstein Unbound15 Dec 202201:14:17
We continue Universal Monsters Abroad, a month where we look at movies featuring the classic monsters that aren't made by Universal, with an adaptation of Frankenstein that tries to do something different, to varying degrees of success: Frankenstein Unbound. Starring John Hurt and Raul Julia, it follows Hurt as a doctor sent back in time by accident to the time of Frankenstein and his monster who must stop the mad doctor and his creation before it's too late. Mary Shelley is also there in a meta-take on the classic story that sounds more interesting than it actually is.

Filmmaker Spencer Parsons and Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard join the show to talk all about the film, Frankenstein stories, and Raul Julia.

Silver Bullet09 Dec 202201:09:44
We kick off Universal Monsters Abroad, a month where we look at movies featuring the classic monsters that aren't made by Universal, with a look at a film that is based on a Stephen King calendar turned novella, Silver Bullet. Starring Gary Busey and Corey Haim, the film follows young Marty Coslaw as he attempts to convince his family and friends that a killer werewolf has taken up residence in their town of Tarker's Mill. It's classic King in all the right, and possibly wrong, ways.

Talk Without Rhythm's El Goro and Dark Destination's Father Malone join the show to talk all about the film, werewolf movies in general and King adaptations.

La Chèvre / Pure Luck24 May 202401:10:11
We near the end of Mike White May, this year all about Francis Veber films and their remakes, with the first pairing of a duo that would become famous for their works together in La Chevre. The Projection Booth's Mike White and Film Foundation's Ryan Verrill join the episode to talk
Martin Short, Pierre Richard, and why the remake doesn't work.

The two films follow a private investigator tasked with finding a wealthy client's supremely unlucky daughter by forcing him to work with an equally unlucky man from the wealthy client's business. It's high concept that struggles to be as funny as the intial setup seems to think it is.

Bob Roberts23 Nov 202201:07:58
We near the end of Grab Bag Month with a film that is much more topical than it has any right to be, unfortunately, especially regarding American politics: Bob Roberts. Written, directed, and starring Tim Robbins, it is shot cinema-verite style as it follows the titular Roberts, a businessman turned folk singer, who is attempting to run for Pennslyvania senator. It's a horrifying and sobering look at dirty tricks in politics and how the masses can be controlled by even the most seemingly innocuous of messages.

Film critic Dustin Rutledge joins Chris to talk all about the film, the real-life implications, and why the film still holds up.

White Mischief17 Nov 202201:16:36
We continue Grab Bag month with a film whose cast, poster, and true story are more interesting than anything we got on screen, White Mischief. Starring Charles Dance and Greta Scacchi, they play two expatriates in Kenya who get into some of the titular white mischiefs which ends in tragedy. It sounds much more interesting than it actually is, but hey, it has John Hurt, so there's that.

Mondo Heather's Heather Drain joins Chris to talk all about the film, the performances, and why the film is so darn boring.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer14 Nov 202201:02:40
We continue Grab Bag month with a film that Chris said he would never watch again for some painfully obvious reasons, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Starring Michael Rooker as the titular character, it follows his exploits as he and his accomplice Otis go on a killing spree in Chicago. It's cinema verite at its finest with a heaping helping of some truly shocking imagery.

Dark Destination's Father Malone and 'Night Mr. Walters' Harris Porter join Chris to talk all about the performances, serial killer cinema at large, and that lovely man, Michael Rooker.

Deciever11 Nov 202201:05:35
We continue Grab Bag month with a film that has two titles, three leading men, and zero chances of being as good as the sum of its parts: Deceiver. Starring Chris Penn, Michael Rooker, and Tim Roth, the three men find themselves at the heart of a murder mystery involving Renee Zellweger cut in half and dumped around NYC. It sounds exciting but it falters under the weight of its own twists and turns.

Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard join Chris to talk all about the performances, where this movie went after it was released, and that totally strange epilogue.

"Harry and Tonto"03 Nov 202201:39:36
We kick off a month without a theme, a first for us here at the Kulturecast, with a film that features Art Carney going west with his faithful cat Tonto, "Harry and Tonto". Along with Art Carney, there is a veritable whos-who of '70s stars who he encounters along his journey from New York to the sunny beaches of LA. It's a road movie with a lot of heart and a truly stand-out performance from Carney at its core.

Movie Geeks United's home entertainment correspondent Adam Long and author of "Barney Miller and the Files of the Ol' One-Two" Otto Bruno join Chris to talk all about the performances, a certain Mouse House's mistreatment of their backlog, and Art Carney's career.

Directed once again by George Miller and starring Gibson once again, the film follows the titular Max as must contend with wasteland politics and resource scarity in Bartertown, a town run by Tina Turner's pitch perfect Aunty Entity. The Woman in the Window13 Oct 202201:11:45
We continue Horrortober 8: The Horrors of Netflix with a thriller whose cast doesn't deserve to be in something this genuinely bizarre, The Woman in the Window. Starring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and a whole bunch of rather talented A-listers, it follows Adams an agoraphobe who thinks her across-the-way neighbor has been murdered. If it sounds like a better movie made by a director named Hitchcock, that's because it is but boy, it's really something else entirely.

The Projection Booth's Mike White joins Chris to talk all about the film, the A-list cast, and all of that totally normal-sounding dialogue.

Confess, Fletch07 Oct 202201:39:05
We take a break from Horrortober to look at a film reboot that's been twenty-plus years in the making, and it also just happens to be a follow-up to one of Chris' favorite films, Confess, Fletch. Starring Jon Hamm as the titular Fletch, he finds himself at the center of a murder mystery that involves stolen paintings, a dead woman in his Airbnb, and a dead Italian millionaire. It's much better than it has any right to be, and sets the stage for, hopefully, more sequels.

Dark Destination's Father Malone joins Chris to talk about not just Confess, Fletch but also the two original films along with where the series could go from here.

Wake Up Heavy's Mark Begley joins Chris to talk about the films, Peele's direction throughout, and where he goes from here.

Hocus Pocus 206 Oct 202201:30:24
We continue Horrortober with a bonus episode on a film that's been in development hell for over 20 years but it's finally here Hocus Pocus 2. Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, the trio return as the Sanderson Sisters to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting Salem, Massachusetts. This time, another group of teens is tasked with stopping them, or ya know, trying to redeem child murders, whichever makes less sense.

Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard joins Chris to talk all about the film, the fact that it exists, and it being complete tone deaf to the original film.

DC Titan's Richard Hatem joins Chris to talk all about the film, the lead's performances, and what kind of horror movies Richard personally digs.

If....13 Sep 202200:55:26
