9 Ways to Grow Your Volunteer Program with Technology16 May 202300:18:17

In this episode, we're continuing a special series during which we're exploring how to use technology to help you grow things that are NOT membership.

In the work that I do with clients, I'm most often talking about membership growth, but in the quest for that, organizations often find themselves needing more people power. Questions begin to bubble up about who will help with outreach and follow-up.

So listen in as I share 9 specific ways that technology can make it easier to grow your volunteer base.

Why Won't Members Join?17 Jan 202300:17:06

Raise your hand if you’ve ever wondered why the heck people think that what your organization does is brilliant, but they still don’t become a member.

Go ahead, raise those hands. I’ll wait.

If your hand is now raised, you are in good company. In fact, getting interested people to decide “yes” is something that challenges a lot of membership-based organizations. There may be hundreds of potential members who sit on a mailing list, attend an organization’s hosted events, and keep an eye on what’s happening without ever officially becoming a member.

In this episode, I share 7 reasons why your prospective members might not be joining. Take a listen and see which ones might apply to your organization.

Helpful with Speedy Marketing: Elizabeth Pampalone03 Dec 202000:23:08

This week’s guest is Elizabeth Pampalone from Absolute Marketing. Elizabeth is known as an international speaker, successful entrepreneur, and expert marketer with over 20 years of experience.  In the time that I’ve personally been working with associations, trade groups, and membership-based nonprofits, I’ve met a lot of marketing consultants and, to be completely honest, most of them sound exactly the same… which is ironic considering that typically they are telling clients that they need to be identifiably different, isn’t it?

Well, Elizabeth’s approach is actually different. She has boiled down the process of creating major components of marketing into a series of single-day events.  It’s an approach that’s similar to the Facilitated Focus Days that I do on the consulting side of my business. I know that the approach can actually be very effective, so I invited her on the show to talk about how an expedited process can actually help you get your own marketing and nurture pieces out to your members more quickly.

ABOUT YOUR HOST

Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership.

Founder & CEO Joy Duling has been working with leaders of associations, trade groups and nonprofits since 2005.

She has also walked the same journey, serving for nearly 10 years as the Executive Director of a membership-based nonprofit which she helped launch from scratch and led to annual revenues of more than $1M exclusively from membership contributions.

Joy has been widely recognized as a speaker, an online educator and a trusted advisor, twice winning the “Unsung Hero Award” from the National Association of Women Business Owners' Central Illinois Chapter. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Social Work with Specialization in Policy, Planning and Administration. She has extensive experience in strategic planning, team facilitation, change management, and association operations.

But beyond industry experience and education…

Joy Duling is the calm voice you want to have in the room when you, your team, or your board is overwhelmed by ideas and options.

She's a trusted resource at the other end of an email or phone call who knows the answer, or can find the answer, when it's not clear what to do next in your approach.

She's a planner of systems and driver of progress that helps your organization achieve stretch goals.

She's a gifted facilitator of conversation, collaboration and constructive growth.

And she's approachable and results-oriented,  which makes it easy to shake loose of the old and start fresh on the new.

Helpful with Sub-Communities: Amy Hager25 Nov 202000:24:18

This week’s guest is Amy Hager, a consultant who provides strategy and support for community-centric organizations. Amy’s inspiration and foundation for starting her own company is built from her in-depth experiences in the broadcasting, publishing, non-profit, technology, and consulting industries.

In our interview, you’ll hear her talk about what joy she finds in community building and providing guidance to a variety of organizations, helping them improve their internal strategies and external voice.

Like many in the Association Industry, Amy didn't start her career in the space and instead says she kind of fell into it.  When I did her interview, I didn’t realize that she was at one time both a racecar driver and a radio DJ, so I’m going to have to do a follow-up conversation with her sometime to learn more about that. What’s important for today is to know that Amy has found a common thread in all she has done over the years, and that is building a community.

Helpful in Rome: Jennifer Landini and Kate McElwee19 Nov 202000:26:22

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought of this episode’s featured organization often. Not only are they headquartered in Italy where the virus hit hard, but they also serve American women who live and work in Rome - women who were likely concerned for the situation in Italy, concerned for the situation back in the US, subject to travel restrictions, and trying to make sense of all of this, just as the entire rest of the world grappled with the changes, as well.

I’m speaking, of course, about the American Women’s Association of Rome The good news is that AWAR had just gone through the process of upgrading their website and converting many of their outdated systems to be handled by the new site. That really worked out to be fortunate timing for them.

In this conversation, I talk with AWAR’s president, Jennifer Landini, and their First Vice President Kate McElwee, about how AWAR has been serving members and creating value in such unusual circumstances.

Helpful with Crowdsourcing Design: Ross Kimbarovsky12 Nov 202000:25:41

In this week's episode, we're exploring the question of whether a member's perception of value can actually be influenced by the look of the materials you give them. In other words, does brand really matter? Ross Kimbarovsky is the founder and CEO of Crowdspring, a company where you can connect with more than 220,000 freelancers to get custom logo design, web design, graphic design, product design, and more. Basically, if you need something designed, you can probably find more than enough people over at Crowdspring who can do it. Crowdspring has some significant reach, working with big companies like Amazon, LG, Starbucks, Microsoft, Barilla, Phillips, but also tens of thousands of smaller organizations like non-profits, entrepreneurs, and startups. Before founding Crowdspring, Ross practiced law for 13 years as a successful trial attorney. But before you start thinking that he's all "no-nonsense attorney guy," some believe that Ross left law back in 2007 to start Crowdspring just so that he could wae shorts to work. Ross says that rumor is completely true.

Helpful by Fostering Community: Association of Development Officers05 Nov 202000:19:51

Recently, I've had the opportunity to work closely with this week's podcast guest as we've collaborated on a client project. When I needed a fundraising specialist to help with the project, she was the first thing that jumped to mind. Julie Sootin is not only a consultant who specializes in fundraising, but she's also the Executive Director for the Association of Development Officers, a membership organization that is comprised of members who are all keenly focused on increasing donor engagement, raising more money, and communicating impact more effectively. I talked with Julie about how her organization continued to foster a sense of community, even during a time when in-person meetings were not an option, and how getting back to a core focus on her organization's purpose was really useful. I hope you enjoy this week's conversation with Julie Sootin.

Helpful through Certification: Register of Professional Archaeologists29 Oct 202000:20:17

Dr. Deb Rotman has been an active teacher, scholar, and practitioner of archaeology for more than 25 years and has a broad knowledge of both academic archaeology and CRM. When she joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame in 2006, Deb wanted to understand how a university with a French name became the Fighting Irish. Answering this question became the focus of her research on Irish immigration in both the US and Ireland. In 2015-2016, Deb was a Fulbright US Scholar to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Castlebar, County Mayo, where she lectured and researched the lifeways and cultural practices of rural Irish-Catholics before they emigrated to the US. Recently, Deb became the Executive Director of the Register of Professional Archaeologists where she facilitates the certification and professional development of practicing archaeologists in the US and internationally.

Helpful Beyond Retirement: Richard Haiduck22 Oct 202000:27:06

The podcast this week features an interview with Dick Haiduck, author of Shifting Gears. Dick is a former of life sciences executive and mentor who has been committed to maintaining an active retirement, and he knew that he was not alone in doing that. The interviews that he has conducted with fellow retirees about their desires to make meaningful contributions are the basis for his book.

I was curious to speak with Dick about his book because I often hear from membership leaders about the difficult time that they have attracting younger members: Millenials and now even Generation Z. This conversation was a nice reminder to keep looking at the other end of the age spectrum as well.

Helpful with System Changes: Reeshemah Davis15 Oct 202000:23:01

Part of the role of being a leader in a membership-based organization is ensuring that members experience a culture of acceptance and respect when engaging with us. Most of us want to be inclusive. We want to remove barriers that would make anyone feel unsafe or unheard. Yet, we know that our organizations exist within many systems where there can be problematic elements. Sometimes, we may even be blind to those problems ourselves. Reeshemah Davis is the founder and principal consultant of EMBOLDEN Action. Systems change is her area of expertise.

Reeshemah spent a few minutes with me in this episode sharing her thoughts on this very complex topic. I was particularly encouraged by her perspective on how each of us, as leaders, can begin having an impact...even if we feel that the overall issues are too large to get our arms around or will have a significant amount of change. I hope you'll be encouraged by her perspective as well.

Helpful with Virtual Training: Heather Burright08 Oct 202000:21:53

My guest for this week’s episode is Heather Burright, Founder and CEO of Skill Masters Market. While Heather does consulting with organizations around instructional design and change management now, she came into that work from a large membership-based nonprofit. In our conversation, we specifically focused on the shift that is happening right now where more training is needing to happen in a virtual manner. If you’re like most organizations that are in this position, offering Continuing Education or other professional development, you’re probably concerned about making sure that the training is still effective even in a virtual format. Heather gave some great tips that I think you’re going to find super helpful. Now, here’s my conversation with Heather Burright.

Helpful with Trade Shows: Marlys Arnold01 Oct 202000:19:17

When I think of industries that were perhaps hardest hit by the COVID-19 global pandemic, the event and trade show industry is pretty high on my list. This week’s guest, Marlys Arnold, saw the impact coming and knew it was going to be big. In addition to her role as an exhibit marketing strategist, Marlys has served as the organizer of several expos and events herself. She has led exhibitor workshops in a variety of industries, ranging from local consumer expos to some of the largest trade shows in the U.S. She hosts the Trade Show Insights blog and podcast and she’s the author of “Build a Better Trade Show Image” and “Exhibit Design That Works”. And she’s the founder of the Exhibit Marketers Cafe and Exhibit Marketers Academy, an online education community.

Professionally, Marlys knows what she’s talking about and she’s one of the best resources I know on the topic of virtual events.  Personally, she’s the kind of person who always comes through for me anytime I have a question or need a connecting point for a client.

Please spend the next few minutes with me, getting to know Marlys Arnold.

What Will Be Different in 2023?20 Dec 202200:09:58

For many organizations, this time of year is when things get "real". You can see whether revenue went up or down. You can see whether you have more members or less.

This means that this is the time of year when it makes sense to consider if these are the same results that you want next year.  In this episode, I share 3 questions that organizations should be asking as one year winds down and the new one begins.

Helpful with Sacred Cows: Dr. Stephan Meyer24 Sep 202000:19:16

Have you ever heard the phrase “sacred cow”?  In a business context, a sacred cow refers to an idea, custom, or belief that an organization resists questioning or criticizing. Sometimes holding onto such ideas without questioning them can hold an organization back from being able to create change that is necessary to survival.

Today’s guest is Dr. Stephan Meyer who received his PhD last November for his research into sacred cows and organizations, but he’s actually been working on change-related projects in his career for more than 25 years. In a world now where every organization is trying to find a new path forward, it seemed like the perfect time for this conversation with Stephan. I hope you enjoy listening in.

My next guest and I had a good laugh after we closed out our interview because she was totally singing my tune and we hadn’t even practiced!  Anita Prather Harvell calls herself both an IT geek and an artist.  Her artistic resume is extensive… playing woodwinds and percussion in local pit orchestras, singing with a chorus, performing theatrically on stage, and, teaching marching band and color guard across the country. She’s even married to a musician spouse. A love for the arts is in her blood.

Today, Anita is President of the North Country Arts Council.  She is on the board of the local chamber of commerce and she works as an IT Specialist for Family Morale, Welfare, and Recreation on Fort  Drum.  She is also a website manager and does the social media and PR for a wide variety of nonprofit organizations.

For a few moments, she put all that on pause to talk with us about her work with the Arts Council.  Here’s our conversation...

Helpful with a Voice: American National CattleWomen10 Sep 202000:19:38

I think it is fair to say that this week’s guest is the perfect example of an association leader whose work reflects a lifelong passion.  Evelyn Green grew up on a farm in Alabama.  Her family’s beef operation was in the largest beef-producing county for that state. Since 1982, she has been involved in the support and management of her family farm. She is married to a professor of Animal Sciences with a specialization in Beef Cattle Nutrition. She has served in every possible role for the Alabama Cattlewomen’s Association and today, she is President Elect for the American National Cattlewomen’s Association.

She - and really every person that I’ve interacted with at ANCW - are incredibly passionate about the work, so I invited her here today to talk about how ANCW is being helpful to members and bring value to their industry.

Helpful by the Numbers: JJ Reynolds, Mediauthentic03 Sep 202000:16:34

This week, I’d like to introduce you to JJ Reynolds from Mediauthentic. JJ originally started working in the field of marketing as a videographer who would create marketing videos and other assets, but he quickly learned that organizations didn’t really know what to do with these things once they had them.

That led him to dig into measurement, which he says is really what’s necessary to answer the question, “Is this actually working?”  When you know what is and isn’t working (WITH REAL NUMBERS in front of you), it’s easier to take action in the right direction.

Today, that’s what JJ focuses on - using metrics to help organizations guide their growth and value delivery.

Matt George and I live in the same town, but we hadn’t met until we recorded today’s interview. Oh sure… I had heard of Matt.  After all, he is the CEO of Children’s Home Association of Illinois.  I knew of the work that he did. I also knew that he had a book out for nonprofits.

But I did not fully realize how innovative Matt’s approach was until I started looking more closely.

In fact, Kevin Harrington who is known as the “inventor of the infomercial” and was the original Shark on Shark Tank says Matt George’s new book “Nonprofit Game Plan” is a game changer and he called Matt the “nonprofit CEO of our time.”

So, obviously, I had to talk to Matt… and let you listen in on that conversation.

Helpful Through Family Ties: GU272 Descendants Association18 Aug 202000:16:09

One of my personal goals as I created this podcast format was to bring forward stories of value being created by mission-driven organizations covering a diverse array of topic areas, membership sizes and types, geographic location, and length of service.  As part of this podcast, you’ll hear from organizations that have been working toward their mission for decades, but you’ll also hear from some that are very new.

That’s the situation today. The GU272 Descendants Association is very new as a formal association, but their mission and the impact of their work?  …. Well, that spans generations.

Join me for this conversation with Rochell Sanders Prater, the association’s Vice President of Membership.

NFDA is a nonprofit organization, formed in 2019 to help Danish American organizations network, coordinate, share and collaborate all in an effort to preserve and promote the Danish culture and heritage in America.

As the Foundation’s President, Bruce recently asked “how can we be helpful?” and he came up with a rather unusual answer.  That’s what he’s here today to talk about.

Welcome to The Joy of Membership Podcast06 Aug 202000:01:10

Most membership organizations -want- to be using best practices for membership growth and member care... but best practices are often easier said than done.

There are practical realities that get in the way… too little time, not enough staff, a board that doesn't "get it", or even chapter leaders that go rogue.

There’s no shortage of advice out there on best practices in membership. What WE need to talk about is how to actually make those things possible in the real world… how to be absolutely sure that growth practices are going to stick… how to make those things easier, more consistent, and even done automatically in many cases.

So that’s what we talk about here, not just WHAT to do to grow membership, but HOW to actually make it all possible.

If that sounds of interest, I'll be here most Tuesday mornings and I welcome you to join us.

Want Membership Growth? Marketing Is Not the Answer14 Sep 202200:09:03

As Fall approaches (here in the US), it's the time of year that many organizations turn their focus to member recruitment. Whether it's an annual membership drive, a member-to-member referral campaign, or a growth effort conducted alongside conference registration, it's typically all-hands on-deck to work toward growing the organization's membership for the new calendar year.

When growth is the goal, the natural inclination is to lean into marketing. Where can we get the word out? What channels can we use to reach new people? Do we need to re-tune our messaging to attract new attention?

Yet, the truth is that marketing, in the vast majority of cases, isn't actually what grows an organization.

If you've been listening to this podcast for any length of time at all, you know that we talk about membership growth a lot, but there are actually LOTS of other things that membership organizations want to grow, too:  donations, sponsorships, volunteers, event attendees, certification holders, non-dues revenue, and more.

With this episode, we're kicking off a special series during which we'll explore how to use technology to help you grow things that are NOT membership.

We're starting this week with growing your donor program - attracting, engaging, and retaining more donors.

I'll be curious to hear what you think.

How Many New Prospects Did You Attract in Q1?11 Apr 202300:09:50

We're solidly into the 4th month of the year, which means there's an entire first quarter of progress in the rearview mirror. Often, the metrics that organizations look at most closely throughout the year is the number of members who have signed on or renewed. After all, these are the numbers that seem most directly connected to revenue.

Today, we're talking about a different number. How many PROSPECTS did you gain this quarter?

In this episode, we'll cover a few reasons why your organization should keep an eye on this metric.

I'll be curious to hear what you think.
