Every recruiter who has been a guest on this podcast de-bunks this myth that it’s better to be a generalist than an expert. Every single one of them has encouraged you, listeners, to find your expertise and flaunt it.

The One Thing Every Successful Executive Has in Common (Ep 140)27 Jun 202200:16:37

Coaching is an excellent investment, but it will only work if you incorporate it into your life. With coaching comes also a new routine to a) sustain your career, b) ensure you progress towards your goals, and c) keep the opportunities coming to you in the long term.

On the other hand, career coaching helps professionals understand how to optimize their time. There's more focus on the tasks needed to be done to enable your career plans.  Because job hunting on your own can be really exhausting!

If you don't have a career coach (yet!), fear not! In this episode, I provide four tips so you can find the time, use it well, and incorporate career planning into your routine.

How to Work Online, Remain Productive, and Connect with People (Ep 138)13 Jun 202200:24:57

I am always giving my clients tips on how to work online. Here are the key complaints I hear from clients and friends:

  • It's hard to connect with people
  • It's hard to keep productive
  • It's lonely, and
  • There's a tendency to work too much

But, working online is now the main aspect of white-collar working life. Many office workers who, pre-pandemic, had to commute to work now can work remotely. Even if they go back to the office, you may find it empty, and most of the work you do is still in front of the computer anyway. So for transitional office-based companies, virtual companies, working for yourself, or job hunting, I hope you will find these tips helpful.

Working for Yourself vs Working for a Company: My Personal Experience and Recommendations (Ep 137)06 Jun 202200:47:18

I get asked a lot by my clients what it's like to work for myself. We also discuss this option when working on the client's future goals and career plans. So, in this episode, I wanted to share with you my experience working for myself since 2019, compared with my previous experience being an employee from 2002 until the end of 2018.

Before 2002, I also had my own business from 1993 until 2000 and took a year to study in 2001. You can learn more about my career story by watching or listening to episode number 62 of the Job Hunting Podcast. I have also recorded an episode on how to transition from a corporate job to being a business owner. But this episode is different: it's a comparison of the two different work types and lifestyles. Also important to note as you listen to this episode is that I am in Australia. So wherever you are in the world, you may need to translate some of these concepts to your local terminology, especially if it has to do with tax benefits.

When Coaching Doesn't Work (Ep 132)02 May 202200:23:21

Engaging a career coach is considered by many professionals a difficult to make. They can't be sure of the results, and the investment is substantial, especially if you're between jobs and not earning a paycheck. It seems counterintuitive to spend money at the precise time when you need to be saving it.

For me, working with a coach was always a no-brainer. I knew what I didn't know, and I was hungry to advance faster in my career. At every opportunity, I signed up, enrolled, and paid for either professional development or career development throughout my corporate career.

Now, I am a coach. I've developed services and coaching programs that I believe are within reach of my target audience: professionals working in the corporate, public, or nonprofit sectors who want to advance in their careers with confidence and knowledge of how promotion and job hunting work.

How to Plan for a Sabbatical, Enjoy It, and Make a Successful Comeback (Ep 131)25 Apr 202200:40:36

I’ve been thinking of doing an episode about sabbatical for a long time. I tried inviting guests, but no one felt comfortable coming out publicly to talk about their experience. This made me even more interested in the whole concept of what these professionals were calling a sabbatical, what it actually was, and why it's still a taboo to take time off from a long career to do whatever else one wants to do or just recover from being laid off and burned out.

Then, last month LinkedIn changed its profile settings recently to allow professionals to identify a career break during their work experience. And in the past couple of weeks, a few prominent Australians quit their jobs. They informed that they were resigning and planning to go on a career break: The Premier of Tasmania, the CEO of the Australian Football League. And last week, a former guest of The Job Hunting Podcast and the CEO of Koko Black, Nicolas Georges. In his announcement, Peter Gutwein, former Premier of Tasmania, said that there was "nothing left in the tank."

Their message was clear: The past couple of years have taken a toll. Undoubtedly, more professionals are feeling burned out and dreaming about taking a break. So, how can we plan and enjoy a proper sabbatical and still make a triumphant return to work?

Stop Praising Hard Work: 5 Strategies to Get You Out of the “Rat-Race” (Ep 125)14 Mar 202200:15:09

It is now easier than ever before to work harder, for longer hours, every day, from anywhere, and at any time. We check our phones constantly. We answer calls when we are driving, walking, cooking. Keeping up with work is a “rat race” and a real trap. We work so hard, and yet we lose focus of our dreams and our values.

It’s too easy to stay locked into hard work mode. Hard work is praised in almost every culture. It is also how we introduce ourselves to others. "How have you been?". "Super busy, working a lot, but fine!" It’s how we start conversations and know we believe that we add value to the world. It’s through hard work.

But is it a solution to your career problems? I don't think it is.

Listen to this episode of The Job Hunting podcast and find out a few of my strategies to get you out of the "rat race" and moving forward in your career.

Overcoming Career Setbacks - with Sacha Koffman (Ep 122)21 Feb 202200:56:04

I have always been fascinated by professionals that recover from career setbacks and achieve great things. Not just executives but also athletes, artists, politicians, etc. There is a great deal of effort into their recovery, from working on their mental health, remaining on course towards their goals, and ensuring they have the best team to provide the proper support and advice. I often wonder how they found the strength and wisdom to turn things around.

About Sacha Koffman:

Sacha Koffman is an executive with over twenty-five years of commercial experience. He's worked at some of the best-known global consulting firms and corporate brands, always in learning and leadership development roles. Impostor Syndrome and Fear of Success - with Michelle Redfern (Ep 121)14 Feb 202200:50:02

Today we have a very different episode on The Job Hunting Podcast, where I have swapped chairs with a past guest, Michelle Redfern, from episode 37, and she is the one interviewing me.

Michelle has recently launched her podcast with her business partner Mel Butcher, The Lead to Soar Podcast, and they are killing it. Sticking to their strength in supporting women in leadership, they have lined up a great guest list, so I recommend that you check it out, follow, subscribe, and leave them your support in the form of a 5-star ranking and a great review, because nothing makes a podcast host happier and receiving feedback believe me.

When Job Hunting Hurts: What to Do About It and How to Avoid Setbacks (Ep 120)07 Feb 202200:15:34

I have seen many amazing professionals give up on their job search for months or even years, because of what they perceived was a rejection, be it a lackluster reception of their interest in being promoted, or a job they applied for and didn't get. I spoke recently to someone who took two years to recover from a rejection from a job she applied for and believed it was a dream job for her. In fact, she was indeed a great fit for the role and went all the way to the final interview stage. But at best her chance was 50%, assuming there was another excellent candidate competing for the position.

There is no reason to feel bad about missing out on a job opportunity. Taking too long to try again takes a toll on your career. That’s what I address in this episode, and offer ways to overcome the negative feelings so you can move on with your career.

Am I a Generalist or a Specialist? (Ep 118)31 Jan 202200:18:45

Do you know if you are a generalist or a specialist? If you believe you are a generalist, you probably think of yourself as a jack of all trades. That is, someone who can step in and lead or do the job, regardless of sector or industry. You may be surprised to learn that you may not be exactly a generalist. On the other hand, if you are worried that you’re a specialist, your niche is too narrow, and you may not be able to advance in your career, guess what? You may also be mistaken!

People think of generalists are jacks of all trades, and specialists are experts. But this may be a very narrow and limited view of the two labels. It all depends on the context, and this is where I see the mistake being made by professionals who try to explain themselves as generalists or specialists to recruiters and employers. Most define themselves as one of the other, and believe that whatever they think they are is the wrong thing to be!

Listen to this episode to find out more about these two labels, how and when to use them, and when it's best to avoid them altogether!

Job Hunting as a Senior Executive - with Amber Knight (Ep 117)17 Jan 202200:49:54

If you are a senior executive listening to this show, or you one day want to advance in your career to become a senior executive, Amber Knight's experience job hunting as a senior executive is an important one for you to listen to. In this episode, we revisit my conversation with Amber, a senior communications executive, who has worked for the BBC and The Walt Disney Company

In March 2019, Disney purchased the film and TV assets held by 21st Century Fox for $71.3 billion. This was an enormous deal, and it reverberated down the company structure. It's expected that mergers and acquisitions will result in restructures, aka, redundancies. Amber and her team left Disney towards the end of 2019, and the pandemic prolonged her unemployment. This is a topic we discussed a few times during the last episodes of 2021, so if you are interested in learning more about long-term unemployment and how to handle it and avoid it, please listen to episodes 108 and 109.

The first 90 days into a new job are crucial, especially if you are a professional working in the corporate, nonprofit, or public sectors. The extensive research shows that the way you start sets the tone for the rest of your tenure in an organization. Changing perceptions later can be done, of course, but it’s more challenging. So why not plan ahead and be strategic about the initial onboarding. I am rebroadcasting some of the best episodes of 2020, while I take a break from my weekly podcast to recharge during the Australian summer. In this episode from February 2020, Consultant, Coach, and coach trainer Sue Zablud joined me to discuss one of our favorite topics. Sue also delivers an important masterclass inside my group coaching program, Job Hunting Made Simple. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Sue, which we recorded just prior to the launch of the Job Hunting Made Simple Program in February 2020.

About Sue Zablud

Sue is an experienced non-executive director, human resources professional, internationally accredited executive coach, mentor, and facilitator.  Sue currently leads the Human Asset Development Group (HADG), a consultancy focused on the design and delivery of leadership development/executive education, board governance/strategy, mentoring, coaching and career management solutions. Did you know that during January, job search spikes to a year high? And that many people use the holiday break to update their LinkedIn profiles?

So in this episode, I share:

- my journey and evolution using LinkedIn,

- how I updated my profile and activity over time in line with my career plans,

- the results I got and how they helped my career advancement, and...

- I also share how I use these same tips and ideas to help my private coaching clients and to do my LinkedIn Audits.

To help you further:

  1. You can download a free resource: my Linkedin Check-list. This will help get your LinkedIn review started and ensure you're ticking all the boxes on Linkedin to get your profile and activity noticed in such a way that helps your career progression.
  2. You can book a LinkedIn Audit: Click here to learn more and book. The audit is very comprehensive, I analyse your profile top to bottom providing you with feedback, I analyze your activity and give you ideas and recommendations on how to best spend your time on Linkedin.
