Practical Tools To Stay Calm During Stressful Family Gatherings16 Dec 202500:20:39

Holiday cheer gets all the headlines, but the real story often includes tension, old patterns, and big expectations. We get honest about the pressure to make everything magical and offer a simple, usable plan to stay grounded when emotions spike. Our five-step PEACE framework—Pause, Examine, Adjust, Choose, Exit or Engage—turns reactive moments into chances for clarity and connection.

We start with the body: how a brief pause settles the nervous system and opens space for choice. Then we name what’s real. Beyond happy, sad, and mad, the holidays can stir guilt, resentment, grief, envy, and fatigue. By labeling emotions accurately, we stop fighting ghosts and address the true issue. From there, we examine the stories we carry about tradition, timing, and roles. If your family’s script was written decades ago, it might be time for an edit that honors meaning without clinging to methods that no longer fit.

Next, we practice choosing centered responses that align words, tone, and body language. That might look like a gentle boundary, a topic shift, a curious question, or purposeful silence. Finally, we decide when to exit to protect calm or engage to build trust—both valid when chosen with intention. Along the way, we share prompts to identify triggers, plan responses, and give yourself grace when you slip. You can’t control every dynamic, but you can control how you show up, and that choice often shifts the entire room.

If you’re ready to trade perfection for presence and turn conflict into clarity, this conversation is your guide. Listen, pick one tool to try at your next gathering, and notice what changes. If it helps, share the episode with someone who needs a little more peace this season, and subscribe or leave a review so we can bring more calm, practical tools to your feed.

When “Tough Love” Is Control: The Hidden Cost of Fear-Based Leadership09 Dec 202500:51:06

Ever worked for someone who made you feel small on purpose? We unpack the rise of fear-based leadership—why it’s suddenly everywhere, how it disguises itself as “tough love” or mission-driven care, and what it costs teams in creativity, trust, and retention. With coach and author Kate Lori, we translate the playbook of control into plain language and offer a counterplay that preserves your energy, agency, and integrity.

We start by defining fear-based leadership through real-world patterns: shaming, rigidity, moving goalposts, and the velvet-glove approach that cloaks dominance in benevolence. Then we connect the cultural dots—media narratives and high-profile executives that have normalized a harsher style—and explore why stressed leaders default to fight, freeze, or fawn. You’ll learn how chronic threat hijacks the brain, why innovation collapses under fear, and how to spot subtext when words don’t match motives.

From there, we get practical. Kate shares resilience moves that actually work: using humor as strategic resistance, protecting information that could be weaponized, and treating attention and availability as levers. We dig into the ethical difference between manipulation and influence, showing how to nudge outcomes without losing your values. For leaders who see fearful patterns in themselves, we offer hopeful steps—expanding the window of tolerance, rebuilding self-trust with daily reps, and embracing the “kindergarten lessons” of apologies, friendship, and trust-building.

We close by charting a better path: strengths-based leadership. Unblock your team, amplify their talents, and share power so performance follows. If you’ve felt stuck in a fear-driven culture, you’ll leave with a clearer map, sturdier boundaries, and a renewed belief that you can be powerful without becoming hard. If this resonated, subscribe, share with a friend who needs it, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway—what’s one lever you’ll pull first?

Breaking the Urgency Addiction and Prioritizing What Truly Matters05 Apr 202200:18:27

In this episode, we delve into the principles of effective time management, drawing inspiration from Stephen Covey's seminal works, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and "First Things First." Covey emphasizes the importance of consciously committing to what truly matters, warning that neglecting this leads to an unconscious focus on the trivial.

A key tool discussed is the Eisenhower Matrix, a framework that helps prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. This matrix, popularized by Covey and rooted in insights from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, categorizes tasks into four quadrants:

  1. Important and Urgent: Tasks that require immediate attention.
  2. Important but Not Urgent: Tasks that are essential but can be scheduled for later.
  3. Urgent but Not Important: Tasks that demand immediate attention but may not contribute significantly to long-term goals.
  4. Not Urgent and Not Important: Tasks that offer minimal value and can often be eliminated.

By understanding and applying this matrix, individuals can better manage themselves, ensuring that their time aligns with their goals, priorities, and values.

Strategies for Effective Time Management:

  1. Track Your Time: Monitor your daily activities to identify patterns and areas for improvement.
  2. Identify Quadrant 2 Activities: Focus on tasks that are important but not urgent, such as personal development and strategic planning.
  3. Coach Others Out of Quadrant 3: Encourage team members to develop autonomy and problem-solving skills, reducing dependence on urgent but less important tasks.
  4. Be Mindful of Quadrant 4: Limit time spent on activities that are neither urgent nor important to maximize productivity.

By implementing these strategies, you can overcome the "urgency addiction" and make meaningful progress toward your long-term objectives.

Effective Leadership: Overcoming Power Confusion, Communication Gaps, and Delegation Issues01 Mar 202200:17:23

In transitioning from an individual contributor to a managerial role presents several challenges. Common pitfalls for new managers include:

  1. Power Confusion: Over-reliance on formal authority can lead to a "do what I say" approach, which may alienate team members. Balancing different types of power—legitimate, reward, coercive, expert, and referent—is crucial for effective leadership.
  2. Ineffective Communication: Failing to set clear expectations and provide constructive feedback can result in misunderstandings and decreased performance. Open, transparent communication fosters trust and clarity within the team.
  3. Doing Instead of Delegating: New managers often struggle with delegation, leading to personal burnout and depriving team members of growth opportunities. Effective delegation enhances team efficiency and development.

By recognizing and addressing these pitfalls, new managers can foster a more productive and positive team environment.

Master Resilience in Times of Uncertainty21 May 202500:51:25

Speed without direction is just wasted energy. That's the powerful truth at the heart of my conversation with Simon Severino, founder of Strategy Sprints and a master at helping leaders master resilience in times of uncertainty by navigating complexity with confidence and intention.

From his home base in Vienna, Simon brings a refreshingly practical approach to leadership that blends endurance athlete discipline with entrepreneurial agility. He cuts through the noise about strategy with striking clarity: "You can be the fastest person in a marathon, but if you're running in the wrong direction, that's not helpful." What leaders truly need is velocity—speed with the right direction.

The Strategy Sprints method he's developed tackles this challenge head-on. Every Monday, team members identify their most crucial task. By Friday, they report what they've accomplished and—perhaps most importantly—what they've learned from their mistakes. This creates what Simon calls "positive loops" that generate energy rather than depleting it, a concept he's successfully implemented across twenty different industries.

What makes Simon's approach particularly valuable in today's environment is his emphasis on decision-making under uncertainty. He challenges the traditional leadership model of exhaustive planning and analysis, arguing instead for experiential learning and quick adaptation. Leaders today face a radically compressed timeline, often making twenty decisions per hour with incomplete information. To navigate this reality, Simon recommends tracking decisions with probability assessments and developing an emotional reset capacity that allows you to move forward without carrying baggage from previous decisions.

The framework is elegantly simple: maintain only a rough three-year vision and laser focus on weekly execution. Everything in between is deliberately eliminated. This creates the space for both strategic direction and tactical agility—exactly what today's unpredictable business environment demands.

Ready to transform how you lead through uncertainty? Explore Simon's approach through his book "Strategy Sprints" or visit his website where you can experience his methodology firsthand with a seven-day free trial. Your team's resilience, clarity, and impact may depend on it.

How to Strengthen Empathy and Build Trust as a Leader18 Jan 202200:13:39

In today's fast-paced work environment, empathy is more crucial than ever. It enhances communication, builds trust, and fosters effective collaboration. However, many of us feel emotionally drained, making it challenging to connect with others. Empathy isn't about agreeing or sympathizing; it's about understanding and valuing another's experience without judgment.

Tips to Strengthen Your Empathy:

  1. Be Mindful of Cues: Maintain eye contact to observe subtle facial expressions and body language, which can provide insights into others' emotions.
  2. Keep Opinions in Check: Focus on the other person's experience without inserting your own stories or judgments.
  3. Identify and Reflect Feelings: Communicate back what you believe the other person is feeling to validate their emotions and show understanding. By practicing these steps, you can enhance your empathetic abilities, leading to more meaningful interactions and stronger relationships both professionally and personally.

Leadership Lessons Learned from 52 Weeks of Embracing Discomfort11 Jan 202200:09:44

Embracing discomfort is a powerful catalyst for personal and professional growth. By stepping out of our comfort zones, we open ourselves to new experiences, skills, and opportunities that can lead to significant development. Research indicates that leaning into uncomfortable situations can enhance motivation and progress toward our goals.

In the realm of leadership, this principle is particularly pertinent. Studies show that nearly half of new managers fail within their first 18 months, often due to a lack of preparedness for the challenges of leadership.

By embracing discomfort, aspiring leaders can better navigate the uncertainties of their roles, build resilience, and foster the adaptability necessary for success.

Choosing discomfort means opting for action over stagnation, demonstrating courage over safety, and serving as a visible role model for growth and development. It involves acknowledging vulnerability, which can increase trust and deepen connections with others.

Reflect on a moment when you deliberately chose discomfort. Perhaps it was initiating a challenging conversation, taking on a new responsibility, or learning a new skill. These experiences, while initially daunting, often lead to significant personal and professional growth.

As you consider your goals for the coming year, think about the areas where stepping out of your comfort zone could lead to meaningful progress. Embrace the discomfort that comes with pursuing your aspirations, and recognize it as a sign of growth and forward momentum. Remember, discomfort is the price of your dreams.

The Leadership Truth: Hard Moments Are Where Growth Happens03 Jan 202200:06:19

This episode explores the frustration that arises when we expect something to be easy, only to find it difficult—whether in leadership, managing people, or life’s personal challenges. Often, we assume that if something is hard, we must be doing it wrong, or that we’re inadequate. But what if difficulty is not a problem to be fixed, but a natural and necessary part of growth?

Drawing from personal experiences—including a conversation with a restaurant owner who thrives on problem-solving and the emotional challenges of a first holiday season without a loved one—the episode challenges listeners to rethink their expectations. Instead of resisting hardship, what if we accepted that some experiences are meant to be tough?

In leadership, struggles such as handling difficult stakeholders, leading change, or managing conflict aren’t signs of failure; they are opportunities to prove resilience and capability. Similarly, in life, grief and sadness don’t always need to be “fixed”—sometimes, they simply need to be honored.

By shifting our mindset, we can embrace challenges not as personal shortcomings but as stepping stones to growth. Because sometimes, life is supposed to be hard—and that’s okay.

Mastering Leadership Through Self-Awareness, Emotional Intelligence, and Learning28 Dec 202100:14:50

In a recent discussion with a company president, I was asked why I believed he held his leadership position. Despite his tenure predating our collaboration, I offered an informed perspective:

His commitment to continuous learning, self-awareness, and vulnerability in examining his mindset and behaviors stood out. He consistently seeks feedback on his effectiveness, not from a place of self-doubt, but from a desire for clarity and impact. These traits are admirable and, in my view, essential for effective leadership.

For current and aspiring leaders, prioritizing self-awareness is crucial. This involves a continuous monitoring of one's internal thoughts and external environment. Understanding what's happening in your mind and around you is foundational to personal and interpersonal effectiveness.

Ironically, developing self-awareness can be challenging, especially for those who may not initially recognize its importance. In leadership training and coaching, helping individuals understand both their strengths and areas for development is vital. Self-awareness isn't just about identifying areas for improvement; it's also about acknowledging and intentionally leveraging what you do well.

“If your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can’t have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far.” – Daniel Goleman

Coaching Not Delivering Results? Here’s How to Turn It Around (Part 4)21 Dec 202100:15:54

In this episode, we delve into the intricacies of coaching, exploring its definition, effective strategies, and common pitfalls. Despite your dedication and structured approach, you might find that your coaching efforts aren't yielding the desired results. This discussion aims to uncover potential reasons behind such challenges, focusing on both the coach's and the coachee's perspectives.

Self-Assessment for Coaches:

  • Mindset Evaluation:
    • Are your intentions clear and focused?
    • Do you exhibit patience and encouragement?
    • Are you investing the necessary time?
    • Is your approach rooted in genuine helpfulness?
  • Behavioral Analysis:
    • Do you clarify your intentions, emphasizing the value and benefits to the coachee?
    • Are you employing appropriate coaching methodologies?
    • Do you ask insightful questions and listen attentively?
    • Are you engaging, supportive, and ensuring follow-through on commitments?

Evaluating the Coachee: Consider the coachee's motivation and competency levels, examining both their willingness and ability to perform. The Six Sources of Influence model can provide a comprehensive framework (which are explained in this episode!).

By conducting a thorough analysis of both your coaching approach and the factors influencing your coachee, you can identify obstacles and implement strategies to enhance the effectiveness of your coaching sessions.

Tune in to gain deeper insights into refining your coaching techniques and fostering meaningful progress with your coachees.

The six sources of influence are based on the book, Influencer: The Power to Change Anything, by  Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler.

Empower Your Team to Master the Complex Skill of Problem Solving23 Apr 202500:12:32

Problem solving might be the most underrated leadership skill – one we use daily but rarely examine critically. How much time do you spend tackling problems each week? And more importantly, how many of those "problems" are actually legitimate issues versus complaints, venting, or whining?

This episode challenges leaders to distinguish between genuine problems (those with measurable gaps and consequences) and vague complaints that lack substance. A real problem sounds like "Our turnover is 20% above industry standard" rather than "Our morale sucks." Without this crucial distinction, we waste valuable time and energy on issues that can't be meaningfully addressed.

The 1-3-1 model offers a streamlined approach to problem solving: identify the specific problem, generate creative solutions that break from conventional thinking, and implement effectively. But the most surprising insight might be how our brains form problem-solving patterns early in our careers that become automatic – meaning we solve problems the same way for decades without evaluating whether our approach still works. Even worse, by positioning yourself as the ultimate problem-solver, you might unwittingly create "learned helplessness" in your team, undermining their growth while overwhelming yourself.

Critical thinking emerges as the foundation of effective problem solving – focusing on logic rather than emotion, eliminating biases, and recognizing that decision-making is its own discipline with various approaches suited to different situations. Are you using the right decision-making style for each challenge? Ready to transform your approach?

Great Coaches Do This Differently:

🎯 They set clear intentions—Coaching is a deliberate act, not just a conversation.
🛠 They guide through powerful questions—Helping others find their own best answers.
📊 They align coaching with bigger goals—Personal and organizational success go hand in hand.

How to Strengthen Your Decision-Making Skills and Lead with Confidence17 Nov 202100:14:27

Being a strong, confident decision-maker is essential to effective leadership. But decision-making isn’t just an action—it’s a process. And without discipline and structure, we risk biases, inefficiencies, and poor outcomes.

Why Decision-Making Matters in Leadership:

✅ Better decisions lead to stronger business outcomes.
✅ Teams become more engaged and committed when involved in decision-making.
✅ Leaders who make clear, confident choices inspire trust and credibility.

5 Common Decision-Making Pitfalls:

🚨 Avoidance: Indecision leads to lost opportunities and stagnation.
🚨 Lack of Clarity: Not clearly identifying the real problem or goal.
🚨 Trying to Please Everyone: Seeking consensus at the cost of strong direction.
🚨 Limited Options: Not exploring enough alternatives before deciding.
🚨 Relying on Opinions, Not Facts: Making choices based on biases rather than evidence.

The Role of Bias in Decision-Making:

Our brains are wired for efficiency, but this can lead to automatic, flawed thinking. Leaders must recognize these common biases:
🔹 Similarity Bias – Preferring people who are like us.
🔹 Confirmation Bias – Valuing information that supports our existing beliefs.
🔹 Expedience Bias – Seeking quick solutions rather than gathering facts.
🔹 Safety Bias – Avoiding risks due to a fear of loss.

How to Strengthen Decision-Making (For You & Your Team):

🛠 Use structured tools like a Decision Matrix or Pro/Con Analysis to instill discipline.
🔍 Examine past decisions to identify patterns and improve future choices.
🎯 Encourage diverse perspectives—challenge assumptions and biases.
🧠 Consider decision-making a skill that requires reflection, strategy, and growth.

The Bottom Line:

Great leaders don’t just make decisions—they make better decisions. This episode will help you avoid common pitfalls, strengthen your process, and lead with confidence.

Accountability in Leadership: 3 Steps to Empower Your Team’s Success02 Nov 202100:11:11

In the last episode, we defined accountability and debunked the myth that it’s about blame or fear. Now, let’s take it a step further—how do we create true accountability in our teams and ourselves?

What If Accountability Wasn’t About “More” or “Less”?

✅ We often assume the person in charge (like a project manager or leader) is the most accountable.
✅ But true accountability isn’t about hierarchy—it’s about ownership.
✅ Everyone can be 100% accountable—simultaneously.

Think about a surgical team. Would you want only the surgeon to be accountable while the anesthesiologist and nurses were less so? Of course not! Every person has a vital role and must take full ownership of their part.

How to Build True Accountability:

1️⃣ Clarify Responsibility – Ensure everyone understands and commits to their role, task, or project. Shared responsibility works only when roles are clearly defined.
2️⃣ Give Ownership – Empower people to take risks, make mistakes, and innovate. True ownership cannot be shared—it must be taken.
3️⃣ Practice Accountability – Develop the discipline to assess actions, ask hard questions, and celebrate accomplishments.

Mindset Shift: Accountability Is Not a Burden—It’s a Practice

🚀 Want more accountability? Start with YOU. Be clear about your expectations, give ownership freely, and model accountability in your daily actions.

💡 Accountability is a process, not a punishment. The more you embrace it, the more empowered and successful your team will be.

Why Accountability is More Complex Than You Think in Leadership28 Oct 202100:12:07

At first glance, the answer seems obvious—of course we want accountability! But when we dig deeper, the question becomes more complex. What does accountability actually mean, and how do we create more of it?

Why Accountability Matters:

✅ True accountability means owning our actions, decisions, and outcomes—good or bad.
✅ It’s not just about blame—it’s about recognizing both successes and failures.
✅ A culture of accountability reduces micromanagement and difficult conversations.

The Hard Truth About Accountability:

🔹 We want others to be accountable, so we don’t have to hold them accountable.
🔹 When accountability is lacking, leaders must step in—leading to stressful conversations many would rather avoid.
🔹 Fear of blame keeps many organizations from fostering a healthy culture of accountability.

How to Strengthen Accountability in Your Organization:

1️⃣ Start with YOU. Be a role model for accountability in your words and actions.
2️⃣ Build a culture of ownership. Support autonomy, clear expectations, and shared power.
3️⃣ Recognize successes as much as failures. Accountability isn’t just about what went wrong—it’s about celebrating what went right.
4️⃣ Ensure clear expectations. Without clarity, accountability falls apart.

💡 The more accountability in your culture, the less you have to chase it. Want to create a team that owns their results and takes initiative?

🚀 Learn how to set goals AND build a culture of accountability! The Confident Leader will show you how.

How I Came to Appreciate Servant Leadership19 Oct 202100:13:55

✅ Strengthens engagement, motivation, and team performance.
✅ Develops leaders at every level—not just at the top.
✅ Shifts leadership from control to influence.

The 10 Principles of Servant Leadership (And Where to Learn More!):

How Cognitive Biases Impact Your Leadership Decisions (Part 2)13 Oct 202100:13:44

Last week, we met Fred. Loud, aggressive, and downright obnoxious. He embarrassed us in a meeting, and we left feeling frustrated and angry. But was Fred really the problem? Or was our brain tricking us?

This Episode: How to Stop Negative Thought Patterns from Controlling You

✅ Recognize new cognitive distortions—like jumping to conclusions, blaming, and emotional reasoning.
✅ Learn why we expect others to change (and why that’s a losing strategy).
✅ Break free from black-and-white thinking that limits our effectiveness.
✅ Take control of your emotions instead of letting people like Fred dictate them.

Key Takeaways: How to Lead Your Brain (Instead of Letting It Lead You)

1️⃣ Be self-aware – Notice when negative emotions take over.
2️⃣ Uncover your automatic thoughts – What story is your brain telling you?
3️⃣ Find the facts – Challenge assumptions, opinions, and speculations.
4️⃣ Shift perspectives – Consider the other person’s motivations and your role in the situation.
5️⃣ Reframe your thoughts – If they’re irrational, challenge them. If they’re valid, process them without letting them control you.

💡 Your thoughts are powerful, but they don’t have to control you. This episode will help you recognize and rewrite unhelpful thinking patterns—so you can lead with confidence, clarity, and resilience.

Cultivate a Culture of Connection with Jill Huizenga08 Apr 202500:39:15

In this thought-provoking conversation, Jill, a 14-year entrepreneurship faculty member at Madison College, reveals how traits like resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving create exceptional leaders regardless of their role.

With employee disengagement at record highs and workplace stress permeating organizations, Jill's approach offers a refreshing alternative. Through her newly-launched consulting company Sync, she's addressing the critical gap between what organizations say they value and what they actually practice through systems and processes. The conversation delves into why emotional intelligence ranks as the projected #1 skill employers will seek by 2025, and why most leaders believe they're more self-aware than they actually are.

"Words matter, but words are only words. We have to take action," Jill explains, highlighting the disconnect in organizations that claim to prioritize well-being but lack meaningful systems to support it. She shares wisdom gained from years teaching students to develop entrepreneurial thinking, and how these same principles create cultures where people genuinely thrive rather than merely survive.

The discussion explores vulnerability as a leadership strength, the importance of aligning words with actions, and practical approaches to measuring cultural transformation. For leaders feeling stuck in bureaucracy or teams struggling with connection, this conversation offers both inspiration and tactical insights for creating purpose-driven environments where emotional intelligence drives success.

Whether you're leading a team, building a business, or simply looking to develop greater agency in your career, you'll gain valuable perspectives on cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset as your competitive advantage in today's complex workplace.

The Pitfalls of Overusing Your Strengths in Leadership28 Sep 202100:12:31

Your greatest strengths can also become your biggest challenges—if overplayed. Just like eating an entire sleeve of Thin Mints, more isn’t always better.

Why Strengths Alone Aren’t Enough:

✅ Strengths should be used strategically, not excessively.
✅ Overuse can lead to stress, exhaustion, and misperceptions.
✅ Situational awareness is key—knowing when and how much to use a strength.

Signs Your Strengths Might Be Holding You Back:

❌ Feedback Misalignment – Others perceive your strength differently than you intend (e.g., teamwork feels like dependence, honesty turns into righteousness).
❌ Energy Drain – What once felt energizing now feels exhausting.

How to Optimize Your Strengths for Maximum Impact:

1️⃣ Know your strengths – Identify what you naturally do best.
2️⃣ Be self-aware – Pay attention to how others react to your strengths.
3️⃣ Find new ways to apply them – Use them with intention and balance.
4️⃣ Ask for feedback – Gain perspective on how your strengths are perceived.

💡 Strengths should serve you—not overwhelm you. Knowing when and how to use them is the key to powerful leadership.

Your Past Doesn’t Define You: How to Shift Your Story and Boost Confidence21 Sep 202100:11:48

Did you know that the past only exists in your mind? The events are over, but the way you remember them is entirely up to you. And how you define yourself today—your confidence, self-worth, and leadership ability—is shaped by the story you tell yourself about your past.

The Truth About Your Past:

✅ The past does not define you—your thoughts about it do.
✅ You control the narrative. Are you the victim, the villain, or the hero?
✅ Negative emotions stem from negative thoughts—but you can rewrite your story.

How to Take Back Your Power:

🔹 Identify a negative work memory and reflect on how you describe it.
🔹 Notice the emotions it evokes—are they helping or hurting you?
🔹 Challenge your perspective—what if your story is wrong?
🔹 Choose a new narrative—one that empowers you, not diminishes you.

💡 Your past doesn’t hold power over you—unless you let it. You can decide, right now, to see yourself as strong, resilient, and capable.

🚀 Want to build a strong future with unshakable confidence? The Confident Leader will show you how.

Mastering Active Listening to Improve Your Leadership and Relationships14 Sep 202100:12:14

You have something important to say. Or maybe you just need someone to really listen. But how often do we experience deep, meaningful listening—where we feel valued, understood, and respected?

We all know that great listening strengthens relationships at work and home, yet we struggle to practice it consistently. Why? Because our brains work against us. Distractions, biases, and even technology make it difficult to hold space for others.

The Science of Listening:

🔹 We speak at 125-150 words per minute.
🔹 We listen at 300-400 words per minute—leaving our brains time to wander.
🔹 60% of misunderstandings come from poor listening, only 1% from written communication.

How to Become a Better Listener & Build Stronger Connections:

✅ Hold the space – Give your full, undivided attention.
✅ Eliminate distractions – Yes, that means putting down your phone!
✅ Listen beyond words – Pay attention to tone, body language, and emotions.
✅ Resist the urge to interrupt – Your brain can process faster, but true listening requires patience.
✅ Paraphrase and validate – Summarizing what you hear builds trust and clarity.
✅ Be non-judgmental – The more open and accepting you are, the deeper the connection.

💡 Listening is a leadership superpower. The question is—who do you need to listen to more intentionally?

🚀 Want to reach your leadership goals in just 12 weeks? The Confident Leader will help you lead with impact and connection.

Why Leading by Example Isn't Enough and What to Do Instead07 Sep 202100:08:13

“Great leaders lead by example.” It’s a common belief—but what does it really mean?

Early in my career, I thought leading by example meant working tirelessly, taking on every challenge, and pushing myself to the limit. I was modeling hard work—but was I modeling balance, empowerment, and delegation?

The Reality of Leading by Example:

✅ Align your words and actions—but know that others may not automatically follow.
✅ Be intentional about what you’re modeling—are you reinforcing positive behaviors or unproductive habits?
✅ Your example includes everything—the good and the bad. Are you modeling patience, accountability, and communication—or burnout, avoidance, and inconsistency?

Key Takeaways from This Episode:

🔹 Leading by example is powerful—but not enough. You must still set clear expectations.
🔹 People won’t automatically model your behaviors—they must see the value in them.
🔹 Own your mistakes—when you set a poor example, acknowledge it and grow from it.
🔹 Be clear on what you want to be known for. What behaviors do you want to be the standard for your team?

💡 Leadership is about more than being a role model—it’s about leading with purpose and clarity.

Overthinking vs. Critical Thinking in Leadership - Know the Difference31 Aug 202100:14:40

How often do you say, “Let me think about it”—only to think and think without actually making progress? We assume more thinking leads to better decisions, but what if our thinking is flawed to begin with?

This episode explores critical thinking—what it is, what it isn’t, and how to avoid common thinking traps that derail sound decision-making.

What Critical Thinking IS NOT:

❌ Being critical or judgmental
❌ Thinking more without evaluating biases
❌ Reacting emotionally instead of logically

3 Thinking Pitfalls That Hold You Back:

1️⃣ Rationalization – Starting with a conclusion and searching for evidence to justify it (instead of letting evidence guide your conclusion).
2️⃣ Emotional Thinking – Reacting based on feelings rather than facts, leading to judgments, attributions, and assumptions.
3️⃣ Cognitive Biases – Hidden errors in thinking that affect our judgment and decision-making (there are over 200 biases!).

4 Key Traits to Strengthen Critical Thinking:

✅ Curiosity – Ask better questions.
✅ Awareness – Recognize flawed thinking patterns.
✅ Flexibility – Challenge assumptions and be open to change.
✅ Common Sense – Base conclusions on logic, not just emotions.

💡 The best leaders don’t just think more—they think better. Sharpen your decision-making and leadership skills by mastering critical thinking.

Leadership Mindset: When a Problem Is Just a Perception24 Aug 202100:14:38

roblems are everywhere, and as leaders, we love to talk about them. But are all of them actual problems? Or are some just negative thoughts our brains offer us?

Shift Your Mindset on Problem-Solving:

✅ Not every negative thought is a real problem.
✅ Identify the real gap. Is it a performance issue or just a personal frustration?
✅ Focus on what you can control. Is this your problem to solve—or just wasted mental energy?
✅ Frame problems productively. Avoid black-and-white thinking to uncover solutions.

Your brain will always find things to fix—but not everything needs fixing. The key to great leadership is knowing what truly matters and where to focus your energy.

🚀 Want to sharpen your problem-solving skills and reduce stress? The Confident Leader will help you focus on what really drives success.

Self-Coaching for Stronger Leadership and Greater Impact17 Aug 202100:08:46

What if the biggest barrier to your confidence and success isn’t your skills, experience, or workload—but your thoughts?

💡 90% of the thoughts you had yesterday will be the same thoughts you have today. Unless you deliberately change them.

The Power of Self-Coaching:

✅ Identify negative thoughts that don’t serve you.
✅ Shift from self-criticism to constructive action.
✅ Ask better questions—ones that lead to solutions, not self-doubt.

Why Questions Keep You Stuck—And What to Ask Instead:

❌ Why am I so disorganized? → Reinforces negativity.
✅ What’s one small action I can take to feel more organized? → Engages problem-solving.

Great leaders don’t just coach others—they coach themselves first. By changing your internal dialogue, you transform not just your mindset, but your leadership.

Why Leaders Must Prioritize Mental Health03 Aug 202100:12:18

Strength, perseverance, and endurance are often seen as virtues. But what happens when we need a break—before we break?

Mental health isn’t just about surviving—it’s about thriving. As leaders, we must recognize when stress, anxiety, and pressure are taking a toll on ourselves and those around us. Yet, so often, we push through, afraid of how we’ll be judged or too caught up in momentum to pause.

Rethinking Strength in Leadership:

✅ Recognize the signs – Be aware of stress and anxiety before they escalate.
✅ Pause & reflect – Take a breath, bring the issue to the surface, and process it.
✅ Seek support – Asking for help is an act of courage, not weakness.
✅ Find perspective – Reset through self-care, reflection, and humor.
✅ Invest in your mental well-being – It’s essential for you and those you lead.

💡 As leaders, we must model not just productivity—but balance, resilience, and self-care.

Manage Your Time, Maximize Your Life: A Guide to Mindful Time Usage24 Mar 202500:19:00

DOWNLOAD FREE GUIDE: https://www.intentionaleaders.com/manage-time-maximize-life

The quest for perfect time management has led many of us down endless paths searching for the ideal system or tool that will magically organize our chaotic lives. But what if we've been approaching the problem entirely wrong? What if time management isn't about managing time at all, but rather about managing our brains?

Time itself is merely a social construct—a way to organize our existence on this planet. The real challenge lies in how we think about time and the choices we make regarding its use. Oliver Burkeman's perspective in "4,000 Weeks" (the approximate lifespan of someone who lives to 80) offers a sobering reminder that our time is finite, forcing us to consider whether we're spending our limited weeks on what truly matters.

The Eisenhower Time Matrix provides a practical framework for evaluating our activities through two crucial lenses: urgency and importance. While many of us excel at handling urgent and important matters (Quadrant 1), we often neglect important but not urgent activities (Quadrant 2) like strategic planning, relationship building, and health maintenance—until they become crises. Meanwhile, we waste countless hours on activities that are neither important nor urgent (Quadrant 4), or become addicted to other people's urgencies (Quadrant 3), mistaking busyness for productivity and importance.

Perhaps most destructive is our tendency to multitask. Despite what many believe about their abilities, research consistently shows that multitasking damages our cognitive capital both short and long term. Instead, single-tasking with full presence—whether in work or with loved ones—proves far more effective. Techniques like the Pomodoro method can help train our brains to focus intently for short periods before taking earned breaks, dramatically improving both productivity and presence.

The path forward involves small, consistent habit changes that gradually transform our relationship with time. By becoming more intentional about our attention, establishing healthy boundaries around urgency, and aligning our daily actions with our core values, we can reclaim control over our 4,000 weeks and live with greater purpose and less stress. Share this episode with someone who needs to hear this message, and remember: you have complete control over your most valuable resource—your attention.

Understanding Imposter Syndrome and How to Overcome It28 Jul 202100:10:41

Do you ever feel like you don’t truly deserve your achievements? That someday, people will “find out” you’re not as competent as they think? You’re not alone.

🔹 70% of adults experience imposter syndrome at some point.
🔹 30% of high achievers battle self-doubt regularly.
🔹 These limiting thoughts hold us back—keeping us from opportunities, challenges, and personal growth.

✅ Recognize the false narratives your brain is telling you.
✅ Challenge self-doubt by adopting a growth mindset.
✅ Accept praise and recognition without minimizing your success.
✅ Be transparent—vulnerability builds confidence, not weakness.

How to Lead When People Resist Change20 Jul 202100:14:07

ne of the biggest challenges leaders face is change resistance—but what if, instead of avoiding it, we embraced it? What if we understood that resistance is natural, expected, and manageable?

Our brains are wired to protect us, scanning for threats and reacting with fear, complacency, or overwhelm. But as leaders, our job is to guide ourselves and others through change with clarity and confidence.

Why People Resist Change:

❌ Fear of the unknown – Change triggers uncertainty and discomfort.
❌ Complacency – It’s easier to stay put than to adapt.
❌ Overwhelm – Too much stress leads to shutdown and inaction.
❌ Loss of status – Change can challenge confidence and credibility.
❌ Threat to independence – No one likes being forced to comply.

5 Strategies to Overcome Resistance:

✅ Communicate the WHY – Be clear, consistent, and urgent.
✅ Stay informed – Understand industry and organizational drivers.
✅ Engage your team – Address emotions before they become roadblocks.
✅ Foster a culture of growth – Normalize learning and evolution.
✅ Acknowledge consequences – Not everyone will move forward—but everyone has a choice.

💡 Change doesn’t have to be a battle. Resistance is just your brain doing its job. As a leader, your job is to give it peace.

🚀 Help your team navigate change with confidence! The Confident Leader will show you how.

How to Navigate Leadership Challenges When Standard Solutions Fail13 Jul 202100:09:20

We all have a “manual” for how others should behave. We expect peers to run effective meetings, bosses to delegate fairly, and employees to function as a team. But here’s the problem—people don’t follow our manual. They do what they are motivated to do, not what we want them to do. And that can be frustrating—unless we learn to let go.

Why This Episode Matters:

✅ Understand why “should” statements create stress and frustration
✅ Learn to accept that people make their own choices—whether we like them or not
✅ Discover when to set expectations vs. when to release control
✅ Shift your mindset to reduce frustration and focus on what you CAN influence

The Leadership Lesson:

We can influence, guide, and communicate expectations—but we cannot control others’ behavior. Holding onto rigid expectations of how others should act only leads to frustration. True leadership (and peace of mind) comes from focusing on our own actions, responses, and decisions.

💡 What if you let go of “The Manual” and led with clarity and acceptance instead?

🚀 Become a more effective, less frustrated leader! The Confident Leader will show you how.
