Foraging and Herbal Medicine in Edinburgh and Glasgow - Inside Story Teacast - Ep.1319 Oct 202601:04:24

Put the kettle on and come foraging with us in Edinburgh. Lucy talks to Catriona and Soraya of Grass Roots Remedies, a worker's co-operative in Edinburgh and Glasgow who believe herbal medicine is the medicine of the people and should be open to everyone.
We talk about the wild plants growing all around us in Scotland, even in the city, and how to gather them gently and well. From nettles and hawthorn to the remedies, teas and infused vinegars you can make in your own kitchen, this is a lovely, practical way into foraging and
plant lore, whether you are a complete beginner or already have a basket on your arm.

In this episode:
• How Catriona and Soraya came to herbalism and foraging
• Low impact, ecological foraging and how to forage responsibly in Britain
• Common wild plants in Scotland and their food and medicinal uses
• Simple home remedies, herbal teas and seasonal recipes
• Community herbalism and the Wester Hailes Community Herbal Medicine Clinic
• Tips for visitors who want to try foraging on a trip to Scotland

Grass Roots Remedies is a worker's co-operative based in Edinburgh and Glasgow. They run practical herbal medicine and foraging courses online and in person, run the Wester Hailes Community Herbal Medicine Clinic, grow herbs in their medicine garden at the Lauriston Agroecology Farm in North Edinburgh, and make simple resources so people can
practise herbalism at home.

• Foraging and herbal walks: seasonal walks in and around Edinburgh, including community orchards and their herb garden at Lauriston Farm. Gentle, slow walks with a herbal tea along the way.
• Wild Things foraging course: a course in wild food and medicine. Join in person in Edinburgh (at Lauriston Farm) or Glasgow (at their allotment in Pollok Park) or take it fully online from anywhere in the world.
• Grass Roots Herbal Foundations: a longer course for anyone who wants to become a home or community herbalist, online or blended with time at the herb farm.
• Workshops: seasonal remedy making and plant sessions through the year.
• Pricing: courses are offered on a sliding scale.

Sea Shanties from Bude with the Barrel Seagals - Inside Story Teacast Ep.1216 Oct 202600:38:23

Grab a mug and come down to the harbour. Lucy talks to the Barrel Seagals, an all-female shanty crew from Bude on the North Cornwall coast, who take the old sea shanties sung by sailors and fishermen and rework them from a woman's point of view.

We hear how the crew came together, the songs of the Cornish coast, what it means to sing the sea in the place it belongs, and why a shanty still makes everyone join in. And yes, there is singing.

About the Barrel Seagals
The Barrel Seagals are an all-female shanty crew from Bude in Cornwall, known for rich harmonies, lively sea songs and a playful, modern twist on the tradition. They sing at festivals, harbours and community events across Cornwall and Devon, including Plymouth Pirates Weekend and the Bude Sea Shanty Festival, which raises money for the RNLI.

Sing with the Barrel Seagals in Cornwall
Sea, Song and Sanctuary, North Cornwall, 9 to 16 September 2028

Sea, Song and Sanctuary is a womens only, eco spiritual retreat on the North Cornwall coast for fifteen guests, based at Atlanta on Trevone Bay. Led by Mary DeJong of Waymarkers, the week follows sacred sites, holy wells and Arthurian legend at Tintagel, St Nectan's Glen, Boscastle and Bodmin Moor, with wild swimming, beach fire feasts, Cornish folk tales and a linocut workshop.

On the last day the Barrel Seagals join us on the harbour to sing, and to help the group write a shanty chorus of our own.
